great camera.......2007-03-10

The E-1 first appeared in 2003, and is a couple generations old now. But, even though it lacks some of the latest features that digital photography has to offer, it's still a fine camera. When I decided to go digital, I wanted a body that could stand up to outdoor use and not worry about it. Also, and more importantly, I wanted lenses that had better resolution than the sensor. Also weight is a consideration since my back surgery. The E-1 seems to be deeply discounted now in anticipation of its successor later this year. Here are my impressions of the E-1 after 6 months:

Well made weather -resistant body
Feels great in my hand.
Bright viewfinder.
The highly rated Zuiko 14-54 and 50-200 zooms are very sharp edge to edge - with nice color rendition and contrast.
Auto sensor cleaning on start-up.
Often-used funtions have dedicated buttons - less scrolling through menus
Lighter weight than comparable systems from nikon and Canon.
A bit noisy at high ISO
Auto-focus not as sensitive as newer designs.
Very quiet shutter.
Because of its 2x magnification factor, its harder to render backgrounds out of focus. In other words, the depth of focus is deeper than other Dslr's with the more common 1.5 mag factor.
Not as many aftermarket lenses and accessories as other brands.
No image stabilization.
Smaller LCD screen than newer designs.

Even with its shortcomings, I feel that for the money The E-1 is hard to beat.

Terrible Product -Terrible Customer Service.......2007-01-31

I apologize because this is longwinded. But I ask that you please read this. Because, from what I have heard, this is not an isolated incident. Thanks!

I owned this camera for less than three months before all of the pictures started coming out blurry. At first I thought it was from not using the tripod, so I used one at all times. The problem continued. I used multiple lenses, various depths of field... Every picture came out blurry. After a while of trial-and-error, I gave up, knowing it wasn't me and called technical support. I updated the firmware, changed every setting with them on the phone... No use. It was a dead stick. Four days, and half a dozen technicians to diagnose it later, I finally hear (after sending Olympus sample pictures...) "Yes it's a problem with the camera." They needed me to ship it to their repair facility, and refused to lend me a loaner because I didn't make 80% of my income via photography. I spent almost $40.00 to have it overnighted to their facility for repair and a week later received it back with cracks in the plastic. The report I was given said: "Reset to factory settings. If problem continues, send with lens." I checked the settings - SUPRISE! None of the settings were changed. All of my custom settings were still in place. I was furious. I had told them countless times it was a multiple lens problem, and they told me they knew it was a camera problem with nothing to do with the lenses. They advised me to spend more money to ship it back to them for them to "repair" it again. I refused and said I wanted a replacement. They did nothing. And when I say nothing I mean even to the point that they never even so much as apologized for sending my camera back in worse condition. It was literally a constant barrage of excuses. They wouldn't even pay for me to ship it back. I called Olympus corporate only to be given the same treatment there. I got rid of the camera, and every other Olympus product I owned, and went with Nikon.

One star is too much. Zero.
