Customer Reviews:
Camera not very good.......2007-01-03
While I wasn't expecting a great camera. This one did not take good pictures of any type. Most of the pictures where either too dark, too light or blurry. Would not recommend VuPoint for anything.
Gluttons Only: Weird, Lomographic Cam.......2006-11-04
This toy camera is a poor choice for the average point and shoot photographer at any price. However, artists, toy camera buffs, lomography fans, and Uncle Fester will want to own it.
Beware! It has no photo display screen, just a blurry optical viewfinder and an LCD picture counter. The picture counter only counts up, so you don't know how many pictures you can take, or how many are left. The weak flash only works at about 3 feet. Anything further away is almost black indoors. For some reason the flash also shoots back out the viewfinder and blinds you in one eye. The unit I own always defaults to low quality mode after you turn off the power. It is really a pain to have to manually beep through eleven obscure button presses to reset to High Quality every time it auto-powers off. The oddball squarish 5:4 picture ratio means a total of over 3/4 of an inch is lopped off the top and bottom of standard 4x6 prints. For closeup portraits turn the camera on its side and aim to one side to get a croppable, centered picture.
Here are some positive features for the toy camera and lomography buffs out there. Best of all, this camera is a Mass Storage device, like a flash drive. This means it does not need drivers to download your photos. Just plug it in to your computer USB port. No need to load drivers or the ULEAD software. If you do not have a picture card you can plug the camera directly into a drugstore photo lab kiosk and your pictures show up immediately. It can hold lots of pictures in its 16 Megabytes of internal memory, up to 210 in VGA mode. You can add second-hand, low-cost small MMC or SD cards since the max 1.3 Megapixel resolution (1280x1024 pixels) takes up so little memory per shot. It runs a LONG time on 2 store-brand alkaline AAA batteries. The battery door is separate from the picture card door. This is a great feature. So many cameras dump their batteries on the floor when you go to take out the picture card. The weak flash does not wash out faces like so many similar small cameras. It has a standard 1/4 inch tripod mount. I use small pocket tripod most of the time anyway; it makes any camera take sharper pictures, but is especially needed on slow exposure cameras like this. There is no horizontal parallax, because the viewfinder is mounted directly above the lens. But watch out, aim high for close-up shots or you will cut off people's heads -- there is still quite a bit of vertical parallax. You can erase the last picture taken, if you can decipher the icon: it is a scissors cutting the letter L in half. You can also erase all the pictures at once using the Format Card command, buried in a dozen confusing button presses. In bright sunlight the colors are very saturated in the true lomographic way. A little overcast or clouds and the colors become muted and you get motion blur. There is no macro mode, but the fixed 9mm, F3.5 lens has a close 1.6 foot minimum focus.
Don't give this as a gift to a beginner. Only buy it if you like the artistic effects of retro-cool lomographic toy cameras with Sudoko style interfaces.
