Design
With a total weight of 5.1 ounces and slim measurements of 3.87 x 2.91 x 0.87 inches (WxHxD), the nüvi 350 is just right for the pocket or purse. A bright, 64,000-color display dominates the front of the device and a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels means that there's plenty of room for displaying map data and other elements of the device's interface. An SD memory card slot is provided for expansion software, such as a points of interest database, media files and electronic guides (see below). The flip-up antenna includes an MCX-type connector for connecting the unit to an external GPS antenna. Meanwhile, a powerful built-in speaker resides on the back of device. A built-in lithium ion battery will give you for to eight hours of battery life, depending on use. In addition to an AC charger, the unit also ships with a 12-volt power adapter for vehicle charging, as well as a windshield suction cup mount.

Fortunately, Garmin has made it easy to interface with the nüvi 350's 700 megabytes of onboard memory, thanks to "plug-and-play" USB mass storage support. Just plug the device into your computer's USB port and you've got instantaneous access to all the audio books, music, photos, supplemental maps and other data on the nüvi 350's internal and SD card memory.

Navigation
The nüvi 350 is first and foremost a personal GPS device. Wherever you go -- in your car or on foot-- the device offers extremely accurate position data, thanks to a high-sensitivity integrated GPS receiver by SiRF and WAAS-enabled, 12-satellite reception. Combined with detailed maps of the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico the nüvi 350 provides automatic routing, turn-by-turn voice directions, and touchscreen control-- making it easy to find your way anywhere. Plus, the unique "text-to-speech" feature calls out turns by street name, and you can choose from either 2D or 3D mapping perspectives when you're viewing your route on the display. Additionally, the nüvi 350 is compatible with Garmin's GTM 10 FM TMC traffic receiver*, which allows users to avoid traffic tie-ups by simply pushing a button that will calculate a new route.

As mentioned, the nüvi 350 comes packed with mapping data for North America, but you can can also load up your custom points of interest. Set up proximity alerts for school zones, safety cameras, and more using Garmin's free POI (points of interest) loader program (available from garmin.com).

The device automatically calculates the fastest route and provides voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions along the way.

Tools for the Journey
Navigation is just part of the journey, and the nüvi 350 is one of the first devices to recognize that. The built-in "Travel Kit" offers an MP3 player, an audio book player from Audible.com, a jpeg-format picture viewer, a world travel clock with time zones, a currency converter, a measurement converter, and a calculator.

In addition to the included travel tools, additional software add-ons are available, such as the Garmin Language Guide, with data provided by Oxford University Press. This software suite contains a multilingual word bank, phrase bank, and five bilingual dictionaries. The multilingual word bank and phrase bank supports nine languages and dialects, including American English, British English, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, European Portuguese, European Spanish, and Latin American Spanish. Now you can look up and translate more than 17,000 words or 20,000 phrases per language -- right in the palm of your hand. Through the unit's text-to-speech interface, users can get a spoken pronunciation of each entry in the word bank, along with gender and part of speech information.

Another useful add-on software package, the Garmin Travel Guide, is loaded with information provided by Marco Polo. These guides put in-depth travel information such as reviews and recommendations for restaurants, tourist attractions, and more at your fingertips. The software allows you to navigate to an address or search points of interest-- places like hotels, restaurants, shopping, and tourist attractions. The nüvi 350 automatically calculates the fastest route and provides voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions along the way. The unit also audibly announces the name of upcoming streets-- letting you keep your eyes on the road while navigating through busy traffic and tricky roadways. And if you stray off course, the nüvi 350 automatically calculates the quickest way to get back on track.

A true story.......2007-07-03

Let me tell you a true story: A couple weeks ago, we went to San Antonio, TX to visit a friend, who is a local guy. From his house, we used 2 separate cars to go to River Walk, the main attraction in town. It happened that the San Antonio Spurs organized a victory parade that night. The streets were crowded, but we got to the parking garage with no problem. We spent several hours walking around, watching the parade, and enjoying local foods.

When we left at around 11pm, to our dismay, the police blocked several streets. The local friend, who was with the car in front of me took a detour and we lost him at an intersection. He had probably about 5 minutes of headstart when we finally got to the intersection. We turned on the Nuvi 350, with his address pre-stored in one of the favorites, and followed Jill's instructions. Guess what? We got back to his house and waited another 5 minutes before we saw his car made the corner.

What else can I say? Buy it.

I like my gps.......2007-07-03

This is my second garmin gps and so far I am a satisfied customer. No product is perfect but the most important is it does the job done. I like this better than my pda-gps because of the compact size. With garmin, I have never lost so far.

GPS'd Bigfoot.......2007-07-03

Got to tell you, I'm a Technocrap, anything remotely technological in my hands pretty much turns into a doorstop. But not this, took it out of the box, hit a couple of buttons, and it actually WORKED.

Worked so well I took it with me on a story I did about Bigfoot in the Adirondacks where I followed a guide who said to drive to the end of North Lake Rd, AND THEN KEEP DRIVING for 10 miles, turn left at the big pine tree. Yeah that's pretty much what I thought...but this unit kept right up with it even when we got there and there was no here, there.

Love this thing, now keep it in my briefcase at all times. Don't know if it will help you find monsters or not, but I will get you back and forth to where you want to go.

And by the way I did use it to GPS where Bigfoot was supposed to have been, and the unit said it was at N 43 28.651' W 075 00.633' if you want to look for yourself.

Vacation Use.......2007-07-03

I recently purchased the Garmin Nuvi 350 Pocket Vehicle GPS navigator for my husband for Father's Day. We are both 50+ so he was not exactly sure if he really liked this or not.

Last week, however, we took a trip to Orlando, Florida, rented a car and spent one full week touring around, and DID NOT GET LOST ONE TIME...WHY? The Garmin Nuvi 350 was incredible. My husband was thrilled at the ease of operation and the expert directions, and suggestions for restaurants, sites to see, etc. This is the first time we traveled and did not get lost going anywhere. And, I was able to enjoy the sites, and not have to be looking at a map and plotting out directions. It was great!

We will NEVER travel without it again!!!!! And, we are using it locally as well.

I would definitely recommend this purchase to anyone who travels and anyone who has issues in the directions department!

I bought this gps for my mom, she just got to America and it has helped her a lot!, I have recommended this product for a lot of guys in my office with the same problem they're all buying it. It's really compact it will fit anywhere, and you WILL NOT need to buy neither the car charger nor the friction mount, because it comes with the car charger and a AC wall charger, and it also comes with the wind shield suction mount.

A friend of mine recommended this Canon PowerShot. She has a SD600 and when I found the SD1000 she was impressed. It is everything she said it is. Point and shoot and the quality of the pictures is outstanding.

It is very user friendly. I appreciate that, being 'technically challenged'. I figured out the video feature without the booklet. Now that's easy.

I would recommend it to anyone.

The Perfect Little Camera on the Market!.......2007-07-03

What else is there to say about this camera other than it Rocks!!!! This is my second Cannon Digital Elph Powershot......my prior Elph was 7 years old and I needed to have more pixels, but my old Elph is still in perfect condish. Cannon has it all in one little camera. I would recommend this camera to anyone.

Can it get any better??.......2007-07-02

I'll get straight to point. I am an amateur when it comes to photography. Canon PowerShot SD1000 is my first camera. What I was looking in a camera was good picture quality, lots of great features, ease of handling, not too complicated interface with a computer and light weight. Ladies and gentlemen I am glad to inform you that Canon PowerShot SD1000 has all those and then some more.

Good for daylight shooting........2007-06-30

I recently purchased the SD 1000 to replace a Nikon Coolpix E5600. The SD 1000 has a very appealing design (depending upon your taste of course but in any case, it doesn't look cheap) and as you can see from pictures posted on this site, it is small and very pocketable. The SD series is all about small form factor and lack of full manual controls (as offered on some of the A series cameras) but good point and shoot capabilities. In this regard, the SD 1000 delivers what the rest of the SD series promises. Fast and accurate focusing, face detection that really works (and I mean good face exposure and not just detection), very fast response with almost unnoticeable shutter lag; surprisingly fast burst mode (even with a slow SD card), accurate color and many other features mentioned by other reviewers. As I said, I wasn't expecting full manual controls as the small size was more important for me (I already own a Digital Rebel). You do get control over the ISO settings and the white balance. The first is particularly important which takes me to the aspect that I don't like about this camera. Being a 7.1 megapixel camera, I expected some noise, but not as much as I got with the Auto ISO setting and no flash (available light) indoors. Believe me when I say that indoor pictures with these settings are VERY noisy. You can avoid this by lowering the ISO setting to 200 or less. But then, the lens is so slow that camera shake becomes an issue, making it almost impossible to take a good picture with available light under low lighting conditions. ISO settings higher than 200 are pretty much worthless because of the high noise levels (even higher than my horrible Coolpix). This is a shame as this camera is very good under good lighting conditions. I guess I will just have to use the flash indoors or carry my D-SLR. I don't recommend this camera as your sole travel companion (you never know when you're going to be in a situation where flash can't be used) or if you expect to shoot a lot indoors with no flash. I still like overall performance and small form factor so I give it four stars.

First, I know not to look for any digital but Canon. I decided on the SD1000 after checking spec's, reviews; all that. But, you know, I just like the look of this digital. No nonsense, no gew-gaw, nothing sticking out too far. The retro minimalist design is clean. Some may say cheap. But, they just don't get the appeal. Some just need the glitter, I guess. The camera?, it works. Very well. Images are incredibly sharp and vibrant. Of course, you're still responsible for what you're framing, but outside of that, it's pretty much handled. I think the camera is a good value for the money, comparing it up and down the field.
I might also suggest to pop for the Sandisk extreme III 2 gig SD card. Wowwee, it's fast.
I'm not too quick to write a review of my purchases but, I'm very impressed with the Canon SD1000.

After researching several models online, I purchased this camera to replace my older model Canon. It is the perfect little camera for almost every need. Lightweight, easy to use, great quality photographs. I recommend ordering a higher capacity memory card at the time of purchase, as you'll be snapping pictures all day long!

great upgrade from SD110.......2007-07-02

I got the Canon PowerShot SD800 as an upgrade to my aging PowerShot SD110.

The screen size, video capability, and speed are a dramatic improvement. I have had this camera about 4 months. I have taken it on vacation and have probably taken well over 1000 photos. The image quality is excellent and the wide angle lens is a very nice feature, especially for taking shots of buildings.

The video quality is impressive... I wasn't sure about this initially, but the image quality of the video and the sound quality is excellent. I am by no means an advanced photographer, I'm just a point and shooter who takes many shots, hoping a good one will fall into the mix. With a decent size memory card (I have a 4gig) you can load up on photos in this well designed, easy to carry package.

I would definitely by a Canon a 3rd time, and this is my camera recommendation until I see something better.

I love this camera !.......2007-07-01

My camera came a couple of days ago from Amazon and I love it. Start up is superfast and writing to my SD card is so much faster than my old camera. I have taken a couple of dozen indoor shots without flash and they came out great. The image stabilization really works. Outdoor shots came out clear and the colors are so vibrant. I didn't need to install any software to transfer the pictures to my desktop (I'm using Windows Vista). The computer detected the camera automatically and gave me options as to which photo program to use to view my pictures. My laptop will be even easier since it has a built in card reader.

The camera feels comfortable in my hands and the controls are easy to access, although my hands are small and it might be a little harder for someone with large hands to use this camera. The mode dial is sometimes a little tricky to turn and I end up pushing it so hard, I turn past the setting I wanted. Best to use your thumb on that dial. I like the lighted power button and the LCD Monitor is large and bright. The one reviewer was correct when they said that the pictures come out clearer than the monitor sometimes displays. I haven't needed to use the viewfinder yet to take a shot, but living in Florida, I know that this feature will be handy on a very bright day. The lens opens and retracts quickly and I am enjoying the wide angle feature. We just remodeled our house and it's great being able to take shots of an entire room to send to family members. I haven't noticed any distortions on the sides yet.

The one complaint that is justified is how flimsy the battery and terminal covers are. I'm really surprised that Canon would use such cheap plastic on such a quality camera. I actually feel like I'm performing delicate surgery when I'm connecting the interface cable to the camera to transfer pictures to my computer. It's not a deal breaker, but I'll be very disappointed if either of these covers break off. I would give this camera 4 1/2 stars if I could just because of this issue. I also think that Canon could do better than a 16 Mg SD card. Cards are cheap now and at least a 512 mg card would give you a chance to get started before you upgraded to a larger card.

That said, this really is a wonderful camera. Please do not compare this to a more expensive SLR camera. This is a point and shoot with some nice features, but it's not what a professional would use. I love that I can easily take this with me anywhere I go and always be ready for that perfect "photo op". A camera won't do me much good sitting home in a camera bag (which is what my Kodak Z7590 does- great camera, but too big and bulky to carry around).

Do your homework before purchasing any camera and be realistic about which features are most important to you. There a quite a few good professional review web sites out there. I think that this camera's best features are the size, image stabilization, and wide angle lens.

I went to a local electronics retailer with a good return policy and bought the best camera form all the major brands. The Canon had the best picture quality by a long shot in this class. Also, the time from turning on the camera to taking a picture was one of the fastest which has allowed me to catch pictures of my son that other cameras would have missed.

I bought this camera 6 weeks back and have used it on 3-4 occassions. So far I haven't seen any issue. It shoots great pictures. I haven't had any problem with red-eye in 300-400 shots I have taken so far indoors, outdoors, during days and nights.

I love it and so does my wife.

This is a great little camera. Very easy to use for the technically challenged and the photos have come out great. I bought it for a trip to the Caribbean and the photos are very crisp. Also great on pet photos where they tend to move on you. The batteries last much longer than my last digital camera.

Excellent Camera!.......2007-06-28

Great product. I got this camera to replace my aged Olympus and I have been impressed thus far. This camera takes razor sharp pictures and eliminates the need for a separate camcorder as it shoots brilliant videos as well. 3 video settings are available, but the default "standard" setting delivers sharp videos. I recommend buying a high capacity SD card if you want to shoot longer than 10 minutes of video. A I GB card gets you a little less than 10 minutes of video so plan appropriately. Slim enough to fit in a pocket and has a big LCD screen. Battery life is quite impressive. Highly recommended!

Canon A550 7.1MP Review.......2007-06-27

I probably would give this 3.5 out of 5 stars.

The first camera I received had a battery cover that stuck so I returned it as I had a similar issue with an earlier model Canon.

The second camera that Amazon sent (great return process btw) works great except for a shutter cover that occassionally sticks. Stills are fantastic quality. I recently took a vacation to Hawaii and the detail from some of the shots is just amazing. Videos seem to have a somewhat blue-tint but I haven't tried to see if this is correctable with video editing software (I am not intending to use this as a video device).

Overall a fairly decent camera wrt optics, just a few issues with some of the packaging/casing as noted.

Great Little Camera.......2007-06-27

I love this camera! Took it on a rafting trip down the Snake River in Wyoming and had no trouble coming up with sharp, clear pictures. I like the way it feels in my hand. Definitely ergonomically correct. The only thing I would suggest to anyone purchasing this little gem is to buy a bigger memory card. The one that comes with the camera gives you only about 6 to 8 pictures.

Canon Powershot A550 -Great camera.......2007-06-27

This camera is very user friendly and takes awesome pictures. It has a large viewing screen and also a view finder. I take a lot of pictures of my daughter and I use the "kids and pets" setting to capture fast moving pictures. I love the ease of transferring the pictures to my computer. The batteries are long lasting and the camera is light and fits nicely in my hands. If you want a camera that takes crisp, nice pictures and is easy to use, this is a great camera for you!
