Junk camera.......2006-08-03

Ask anyone who has used the CDS6300 much, and you'll get (at least) the following complaints:
* Battery door is poorly made and breaks, and it's really hard to tape it back shut because the battery springs are really tough. When the doors break off, the camera won't let you shoot any pictures until you close them up again, so you're pretty much stuck at this point.

* Drivers for Windows XP aren't available. I keep the driver package around for when they randomly stop working on my PC, and then I do a re-install - seems to fix the problem for at least a short while.

* Randomly breaks. With this camera, you're pretty much guaranteed that it will disintegrate while you use it - it's just a matter of when. The flash on my camera stopped working two days ago after some light use taking photos on eBay, and it hasn't come back yet. Some people experience total camera death, some limp along with a temperamental camera until it totally dies, etc.

* Tech Support is awful. RCA / Thompson have basically disowned this camera.

Additionally, my camera suffers from a bad sensor where I get marching patters of faint pink, green, and light blue waves across the screen. Gah.

At 2.3 megapixels, tiny (and battery-hungry) LCD screen, and very slow response time, you're better off buying pretty much any camera on the market.

Windows XP Tip.......2005-12-10

This is not as much a review as a Windows XP tip for loading the CDS6300 driver. I could not get the current RCA driver to run until I first removed the driver. Below are the steps I think you will need to get the CDS6300 driver to work on Windows XP. I know that removing a driver before loading a new one is good practice but after reading the reviews I assumed the driver did not work on Windows XP and spent my time trying to contact RCA to see if they had a driver.

Remove existing driver by going to the Control Panel and using the Add or Remove Programs module. (Don't skip this)

Click on the downloaded driver zip file and run the driver install.

I will also leave a review of RCA in general. I have had frustration with RCA products and even more frustration with their service department (Thomson). This is based on owning two RCA products (a CD clock radio and this camera). Both products have stolen many hours of my life. I can't think of any other products I have owned that have caused me so much pain. I have made a mental note to only buy RCA products after carefully checking the reviews. The tip for installing this driver is not out of love for RCA but out of sympathy for its customers.

HORRIBLE PRODUCT QUALITY. BATTERY DOOR THEN DEAD! .......2005-05-24

I acquired this unit in a "special counter" of used goods locally. It came with a paltry but adequate 8MB CompactFlash card. The battery door was already broken (since confirmed to be THE most recurring defect) due to inadequate engineering and shoddy materials. I rigged up a velcro tape solution that worked ok and was moderately impressed with the image quality (and drain of batterys). Then, it happened. No power on, no indication of any kind of impending problem. I have since researched this unit and my experience has been reflected MANY times - broken door and then one day you too will have a dead unit with no recourse.

Great for the price.......2004-05-12

Great start-up digital camera. Performant for the price. The camera itself and the software are REALLY easy to use. Both the physical and digital zoom are very performant. The battery consumption is actually not that bad. I usually use rechargeable batteries that last longer. I bought kodak digital camera batteries on a trip 2 months ago, took over 50 pictures and viewed them and still haven't had to change them.

I was stupid enough to buy two of these cameras........2004-04-26

I purchased two of the RCA digital cameras 11/02, one as a gift for my son. They took very nice photos. Exactly one year after purchase, my battery compartment cover cracked and the camera became useless. The same thing happened to my son's camera at almost the same time. As the covers were attached only by two small screws, I assumed (my first mistake)I would be able to order replacement parts and have two working cameras. I got nothing but the run-around from RCA customer "service," and the generous "offer" of allowing me to buy two replacement cameras for a couple hundred dollars. They refused to allow me just to buy the parts. I will never buy another RCA product and will make sure as many poeple know it as possible.
