4 out of 5 stars decent cheap camera.......2002-12-11

640x480 can do alot. Wish I could add memory. Wish it worked on Linux or Macintosh. Closeups work well. It's also fast. You can take about 1-2 pictures a second for capturing some action. 640x480, gotta be close. Also small enough to carry everywhere.

4 out of 5 stars Good Animation Cam.......2002-09-27

I wanted to do a claymation video, and on TV anything more than 640x480 is wasted. This camera has a feature that no other one in its class can match: a macro setting for extreme close ups. It has a standard tripod screw mount on the bottom.

The only drawback is the interface. You address this little beast as a TWAIN device, like a scanner. That limits the software than can read from it, and the included software is only OK.

4 out of 5 stars Good value for money........2002-09-22

I wanted a digital camera, but I wasn't in a position to fork over several hundred dollars. I compromised and bought the StyleCam so I could learn more about digital photography and editing. It doubles as a webcam, and can also shoot AVI movies 60 seconds in length at 3 frames per second.

The camera is a little smaller than a deck of playing cards. It comes with a black pouch that you can attach to your belt, stand, USB cable, Maxell batteries, software CD, instruction booklet, and a small wrist strap. Even if you can't get the strap around your wrist, it's good to wrap around a couple of fingers when you're operating the camera one-handed so you don't drop it. It just barely goes over my hand and my glove size is mens medium.

Picture quality is fair, but you can use the software to make adjustments and improve the pic. Indoor photography was better than I expected even with no flash. I got some very crisp pictures inside a shopping mall, and some okay pics inside my apartment which was only lit by one 60 watt bulb directed at the subject. Daytime outdoor shots are pretty good, but you have to be facing away from the sun or you will get glare. At night, you've got to be in a somewhat well lit area to get a pic, like on a street with lots of street lamps.

The camera has only two buttons, so it's pretty easy to use. It beeps every time you take a picture (even when shooting an AVI) which can get annoying, especially if you're trying to take someone's picture without them noticing you. It has a delay-timer function so you can set it and get in the shot. The software has some neat tools for manipulating and enhancing photos that I've seen on much more expensive programs. They seem to have thought out the package really well. There is even a PDF version of the manual on the CD in case you lose the instruction booklet.

Unlike most digicams, this one isn't a battery hog. That's because there is no LCD screen and no flash. When hooked to your computer, the camera draws power directly from the USB port. It can hold about 60 VGA or 180 CIF pictures before the memory is full. There is no removable memory, and you continue to use battery power while the camera is storing photos, even if the camera is off. If the batteries run out you'll lose your pictures, but the camera will hold your pictures for a few seconds while you are changing batteries. I tested it by taking out the batteries for 30 seconds. My pics were still there.

0.3 megapixels is VGA quality or about 1/10th the size of a picture taken by a "good" camera. With only 0.3 megapixels you're not going to get print-quality pictures. But at less than 1/10th the cost of a "good" camera, this is a great first camera if you just want to post some pics on your website or ebay or just play around. I think it will do nicely until I can get the camera I really want next year.

4 out of 5 stars It gets the job done........2002-07-27

I recently purchased the StyleCam. It was my first digital camera purchase, and I bought it to post pictures I take on the web. The camera itself it very small (hard to tell by the pictures of it!). Image quality isn't the best, but it's not the worst either. For the price the camera is a pretty good deal. For my uses, it gets the job done. You do get what you pay for- an easy to use digital camera that will take okay pictures. The included software with the camera is better than I thought it would be. Image editing functions are cool to mess around with, but I generally stick with Photoshop for my needs.

If you're looking for a very easy to use, no fuss digital camera for your basic picture needs, the StyleCam will most likely suit you.

1 out of 5 stars GARBAGE!.......2006-05-05

This camera is ridiculus, i got it for christmas. By 1 year everything was almos broken on it, even thogh it still worked. But now the battery chamber made the battery leak! ridiculus! doesn't even start up or turn on now.

Garbage!

4 out of 5 stars Maybe I'm lucky.......2004-04-29

This camera is defenitly not as bad as people make it out to be I got it today and have been using it with and with out flash and on all three quality settings just to get a feel for it and the batteries are fine and it hasn't shut off unespectantly

There are some problems with it first off is the flash is very bright and not good for close shots and without the flash (in my kinda dark house) you loose alot of detail but for the most part pictures are fine and with the software you can sharpen them and get better quality. Another problem is the lack of a zoom because zoom is always nice

The goods are many too such as the price (I got mine for 40 after shipping), the fact you can record video and audio, you get 16mb instead of 8mb like on most cams in this price range it is very easy to use and you can use it as a web cam too.

For the most part I think you get more than what you pay for when it comes to feature but when it comes to constant quality of your pitures it all depends on the lighting.

1 out of 5 stars SiPix Style Cam Deluxe...Garbage.......2004-02-12

Pure garbage, pictures would not come out if you used the fash,
only day light pics worked good, one day the camera just died,
put in new batteries...nothing, to late to return they only gave me 60 days, thanks for nothing.

1 out of 5 stars Sipix Style Cam Rubbish!!!.......2004-01-19

I took this out New Years Eve and every single picture was ruined! Everyone had no face as the flash was too bright. You can't even adjust the picture in a package as there is no detail in the faces. So take the pictures with the person standing 5 metres away! A bit of masking tape over the flash solves that but when I took some pictures of my baby neice who I see once a year I went to download them and the camera locked up. I lost all the pictures. Few weeks later I went out for someones birthday and took loads of pics. Next day the software crashes after downloading the 3rd picture (which takes between 5 - 15 mins) so I lost all those priceless pics too!! This camera is a joke! Other than those problems it could of been a decent camera, as the one or two pictures I actually managed to download didn't look too bad (outside shots only). If you risk losing the pictures you take whats the point in having a camera! I,m in the process of getting my money back. I,m going to put a bit more dosh in and get something that actually takes pictures.

1 out of 5 stars Very erratic performance.......2003-09-08

I picked up the SiPix on impulse due to its low price, figuring it would be a fun intro to digital photography and a great way of recording nights out / events at school. The camera is small and lightweight and therefore very good for that. However, it has several severe drawbacks:

- By default, the flash is turned off; therefore, photographs are often taken without flash and are unusable
- The camera's connection to the computer is erratic - for example, the camera has refused to connect for the past day and required a hard reset (losing all photos!) before it would connect again
- Picture quality is often poor, due to lack of focusing mechanism

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Depends on expectations.......2003-05-20

I bought two of these little cameras, in part because they were cheap (I paid around $$ each) but mainly because they were so small and light I could send one in a bubble-pack envelope to a pen pal in India (smuggled, in other words) and we could exchange pictures via the Internet.

When reading reviews here and elsewhere, it almost sounds as if there are two cameras in question. The biggest problem seems to be battery life, but everyone is vague about this. I tested mine in the following manner: I put in a fresh alkaline AAA battery and took 24 shots in "high" resolution (640x480) at 8am. I then checked hourly until 11pm to see if the pictures were still in the camera. After 28 hours, I plugged the camera into my PC and saved the pictures to a file successfully.

While the software says "copy," it apparently means "move." The pictures were no longer in the camera following downloading to a file. So I immediately took 24 more. Same battery in the camera. After this, I no longer checked by turning on the camera. I hooked up at 75 hours and was able to view the pictures as a slide show, which didn't remove them from the camera. Same story at 110 hours. That satisfied my needs, so I checked no more.

This is in stark contrast to other people's experience, so I assume they either left the power on, or have defective cameras. Since current drain would be a design function, I suspect the former.

As for picture quality, it's okay for snapshots where you just want a record. Not unlike a very cheap film camera. I did notice some blurry areas that don't look like lens problems. Maybe the surface the image is focused on isn't flat. I was able to get decent pictures without much attention to holding the camera in a special way, but I know how to depress the shutter without jerking, which is the key. I was even able to take successful one-handed "palm shots" when I didn't want to be seen taking a picture.

So if you have the option of returning a defective camera, and don't expect salon quality (I could enlarge to almost 5x7 in my computer), it's a neat little cheapie camera.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't work.......2003-03-05

I agree with the previous reviewer's comments. The Stylecam Snap didn't retain the shots I took despite a brand new battery. I returned the product for a refund.

1 out of 5 stars Barely a camera.......2003-02-18

This thing is so small and cool I had to order it.
Pros:small, cool, cheap, downloads to PC fast and easy.
Cons:
1)Twice I lost all the photos I'd taken, even though battery was good and even with this new improved model that has a capacitor to keep this from happening.
2)Uses quite a few batteries, but still acceptable.
3)You MUST hold the camera VERY still.
4)It always defaults to indoor photo setting. Each time you want to take an outdoor photo you must go thru the menu again to outdoor(6 steps).
5)This camera never really takes a 'good' indoor or outdoor shot. Always too bright or dark or grainy or white.....
6)I got it mostly for my kids but they just can't hold it still enough. Then I decided it would be for me. 1 in 10 photos would be OK. I didn't keep a single photo I took.
I returned it in the end. Too bad cuz it was so nice to carry the thing around in my pocket. It really is the size of a cracker.

3 out of 5 stars good for a first.......2004-07-15

I liked how that I dropped this camera on the floor to concrete like 5 or 6 times, and it has been hit by a basket ball and still it works!! The video's on this camera are pretty pixelized, they are not choppy though. And the fact that rechargable batteries dont work on it. YOU BETTER GET ENOUGH LIGHT THIS IS AN OUTDOOR CAMERA! And unless you have a VERY bright home, go outside with this, I must say you get a little more than what you pay for. GOOD CAMERA IF IT IS YOUR FIRST ONE!

4 out of 5 stars Muy buena camara!!

2 out of 5 stars SiPix StyleCam Deluxe.......2003-10-29

This SiPix StyleCam Deluxe was the first digital camera I ever purchased, although I have used a high-end Sony at work. I needed something really quickly and cheaply for an insurance claim and this camera seemed to fit the bill.

The picture quality is okay for capturing pictures for my insurance claim in either direct sunlight or in low light conditions with the built-in flash. The picture in low light conditions without the flahs is faded and full of noise. Color rendition is quite poor and focus is very soft. Also don't be confused by the 1.3MP rating. A 1.3MP picture taken by an expensive camera with a large lense will be much sharper than a 1.3 MP taken by this cheap camera.

The biggest gripe I have with this camera is not the resolution, but rather its absolute refusal to accept NiMH rechargeable batteries. It would give me at most 5 flashes before a set of freshly charged NiMH batteries dropped below the voltage cutoff point and the camera would then take no more pictures with the flash on. This camera absolutely DEMANDS fresh throwaway batteries, such as alkalines because it has a high voltage cutoff value.

This camera doesn't use a memory card. Instead it uses a built-in 16MB memory chip. The images will stay in the camera as long as there is sufficient battery power. A couple of times my camera froze and mysteriouly reset itself even when the batteries had plenty of juice left and all the pictures in the built-in 16MB memory were lost.

Installing the driver for the camera was not trivial on Windows XP. After installing the driver and included softwares and booting up as instructed by the manual, I plugged the camera into the USB port but the computer did not recognize the camera. Finally I opened up the two softwares and closed them again and then rebooted. Only then did the computer recognize the camera.

Although I gave it only 2 stars, one must keep in mind that I paid only $45 (shipping included) at J&R. Therefore, relative to the very low price paid, it was a decent camera, but in absolute terms it was a lousy camera. Overall I wish I had spent $100 or more to get a much better camera. But this was an emergency camera and I was not too picky about either its functionality or quality.

2 out of 5 stars Not a good buy.......2003-10-13

On the positive side: I liked the additions that came with the camera (software, cables, etc.) It was also easy to use and set up.
On the negative side: the color was very bad. People's faces looked redder than normal, with blotchy whiteness where the light fell. It made my tan cat look greenish. Also, the pictures were way too sharp, which intensified the color problems. If you want decent pictures, don't get this camera.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay.......2003-09-26

I thought this would be a good choice since it has 1.3 mp. It obviously isn't. The photos rarely come out. I have a white dog who i try to take photos of. With the flash turned off the photo is completely black. With the flash turned on the photo is flushed so white i can't tell what the photo was about. I am trying to return this as i speak. You get what you pay for. Don't let the mp fool you. You'd rather get a lower mp and pay a little more and actually have photos that turn out. The physical body of the camera does look attractive though.

5 out of 5 stars SiPix StyleCam Rave! For the money, it's extremely good........2003-12-09

I went out and bought this camera today [...] I thought it was going to be a peice of junk but in all honesty if you take pictures in decent lighting they aren't horrible. They're grainy in some cases but in others they're fine. Decent lighting helps tons, as it does in all photography. It also doubles as a webcam and can take some video too. I haven't done any video but it works fine as a webcam. With all the uses and the decent quality photos, I'd recommend this. I've only taken indoor photos so far but I plan to try some outdoor ones tomorrow. I'd have to say this is WAY better than the JamCam. Many uses, etc. For the money, its great.

3 out of 5 stars Great little camera for 5 hours at a time.......2007-01-11

Bought this camera for my daughter. She loves it. Great for her taking photos around the house. Easily fits in her pocket and shoots good pictures. Holds lots of photos, 300 pictures at 320x240 or 70 pictures at 640x480. Easily uploads to computer. Very durable too. Only downfall is that it runs off a single AAA battery. It drains quickly in about 5 hours. At that time you have to download your pics or you lose them. Also battery drains even while turned off. Would recommend not putting batteries in until ready to shoot, and soon as finished head to a computer or laptop if on vaction, before they are gone.

1 out of 5 stars Memories lost forever.......2005-05-19

I purchased this camera because it was cheap and digital. All I wanted to do was to take some snapshots of my college and friends before I went home for the summer. Little did I know that even though the camera was off, the battery was draining of power. By the time I came home, the battery had died, so I replaced it. Then I tried to download the software CD, which didn't work (Error 0, apparently, whatever that means). I then read the PDF owner's manual and learned that by replacing the dead battery, that all my pictures were erased.
This is a useless piece of junk! I'm so disappointed that I spent money on this. From now on, I'll just stick to regular film cameras. The risk of dead batteries just isn't worth it when it comes to irreplacable memories.

        1 out of 5 stars Almost useless.......2005-02-11

After purchasing this camera, I noticed that the battery was dying even without images in the camera. I thought my camera defective, until I discovered this comment on p. 8 of the product manual (which can be found on amazon.com):
"Even without images in the camera, the StyleCam Blink II will slowly draw battery power. To conserve battery power, after downloading images, remove the battery from camera.
Caution: The camera will use battery power when a battery is inserted. Remove the battery from the camera after downloading pictures or when not in use."
        Enough said.

        1 out of 5 stars Fatally Flawed.......2004-09-20

I bought this camera for my son's 8th birthday. The picture quality is a bit better than I expected from such a cheap camera (about the same as a camera phone). It is very tiny and can store a lot of pictures. HOWEVER... this camera has flaw that renders it useless: The memory gets cleared at random. You spend a few hours shooting pictures and suddenly, without warning, "poof" all your pictures are gone. This can happen with an old or new battery, after 1 or 30 pictures and with the camera on or off. It is totally random.
I ended up buying my son a Fuji Nexia Q1 APS camera to replace this one.

        3 out of 5 stars Little.......2004-07-04

The camera is smaller in person than what it looks like in the picture. I'm having problems setting up the software on my computer. You can's see the pictures you've taken until you hook it up to your computer. I give it 3 stars because it's so small and can fit it in your pocket.

        Amazon.com Review

There are two things that stand out immediately about the about the StyleCam DV100--size and price. A digital still camera, digital camcorder, and audio recorder in one, the DV100 is about the size of a bar of soap and is priced at a fraction of the cost of next cheapest digital camcorder. Too good to be true? Not at all. The camera is everything it claims to be, is easy enough to be used right out of the box, and overall makes a decent entry-level digital camcorder.

So what's the catch? The big one is that without a memory card (and it does have a slot for either a MMC or SD card), the camera will be maxed out before you've even really started. How many photos and how much video the camera can hold depends on the level of quality you choose. At the lowest resolution (640x480), you can take a respectable 80 still shots, but at a more standard resolution level (1280x1024) that number is less than half, and if you take even two minutes of video, you won't get more than ten or so shots off before the dreaded "Memory Full" message. Purely as a camcorder, it is not very useful without external memory since you won't get much more than about ten minutes of footage. And the fidelity of the video, at 8-15 frames per second, is not exactly HDTV-ready (although we are actually kind of fond of the low-budget indie film look).

Another minor drawback that should be mentioned is that the shutter button is awkwardly positioned just to the right of the viewfinder so your index finger must bend nearly in half in order to reach it. A quick word about the software that comes with in the package, PhotoImpression and VideoImpression: It's not junk (call us cynical, but we've come to expect this). The software's big, friendly graphic interface let you do quickly and easily do all the basics: crop, adjust contrast, re-size, etc. Unlikely to be mistaken for Adobe PhotoShop, but perfectly usable nevertheless.

Sure, this camera has its limitations, but these must be weighed against its combination of price and size, which is nothing less than astonishing. --David Stoesz

5 out of 5 stars Great for its price!.......2005-11-16

I am a very avid filmaker. My parents bought this for me more than a year ago. It's really small and useful. The lighting is really pretty bad, but this is a great camera for a beginner. I have good cameras that I can use for other, more important things, but if you're going out you can just put it in your pocket, and take it with you.

4 out of 5 stars Does good clips for my groups.......2005-03-23

I crossdress and do a lot of flashing and upskirting-I use the video camera to take clips of me and put then in my groups-they have a small file size-I can get about 20-25 second clips in less than 1 meg-I would recomend this camera to anyone who wants to email clips or put them in communities or groups-Also small enough it can be set up and not really be noticed

4 out of 5 stars Bought this for my then 13-year old son........2005-02-23

My son is an avid skater and has been begging for a video camera to film their antics. Got him this last Christmas, for about $100 after rebate, and more than a year later it's still holding up. He hasn't broken any part of it and continues to blaze through the AA batteries. Can't get much better than that. I wouldn't give it to a child younger than about 12 years old because it's not a Fisher Price - it's a little more delicate than that - but 12 and over for sure! The only drawback is that it's only good in bright sunlight. He can't shoot anything in the evening and he would like to.

4 out of 5 stars Great starter camera.......2004-07-23

My 8 year old wanted a digital camera/camcorder and i didn't like her using mine and I wasn't going to spend hundreds of dollars for one for a child. So this was a great and welcome alternative. It works great, she is thrilled to bits. I love the fact that you can hook it straight up to the vcr and playback and record her creations without having to upload to a computer.
She and her siblings played with it all day long. I purchased the 128mb card for ours and it's enough for us. I agree with the other review in that I wish it had a power supply. But I guess rechargeable batteries will be the best way to go. Overall extremely pleased with the product for the price.

4 out of 5 stars Great on the go Camera.......2004-07-11

When I started my family, I bought an 8mm camera. I can probably count the number of times I used it on one hand in the five years I've owned it. It was bulky, needed frequent recharging, and frankly, after a while, I would forget to bring it out. I was looking for something small, digital, and of course inexepensive. I gave the SiPix a shot. I love this little camera. I can take it everywhere and it's very simple to use. The software is also simple, but it doesn't have alot of features. If buying this camera, it is a MUST to purchase a memory stick, at LEAST 256 MB or you can't record video for more than a couple of minutes. Also, there is no flash, so only outside or in lit areas. I was dissapointed that there was no flash or lighting options, and battery life (2 AAs) doesn't last as long as I like (but longer than the 8mm NiMH, how sad). Overall, this camera had performed how I expected it to for the cost. The quality is not the best, but decent, and it works great to record little moments on family trips and the kid's activities. If you are looking for portable, digital, and an inexpensive camera to start with; and can live with "ok" quality, this is the camera to buy. Especially since it's a great starter camera if you're not sure you want to upgrade to digital camcorders because of price. The money you spend on this camera is worth "experimenting" in the digital world, before you upgrade to the "big dogs"
