The Olympus D-340L is the latest top-of-the-line camera to emerge from Olympus America. Although the unit is adept at capturing excellent images, the D-340L ($700 street) is marred by a tendency to overexpose images shot in sunlight.The black-and-gray camera body and tripod socket are made of plastic. There's no rubberized hand grip or special niche for fingers and thumb, although the indent on the back and slightly tapered front allow the camera to be shot one-handed. The lens and optical viewfinder are protected by a sliding flap, which doubles as the camera's on/off switch. There are black frame marks, cornered crosshairs for centering the picture, and small cornered frames for shooting with the 2X digital zoom to guide you as you frame your shot. The camera is fairly easy to set up and use. The control buttons all have icons describing the actions they represent. Pressing the star button brings up various functions, including telephoto and wide angle.
