The world's first integration of retractive lens with folded optics technology allows the zooming to occur horizontally within the camera. This makes it possible to pack a powerful 10x optical zoom (equivalent to a big 35 to 350mm lens on a 35mm camera) into a compact camera. The Extended Optical Zoom function, which magnifies the image with minimal deterioration by using the center part of the high-resolution CCD, boosts the zoom power to a maximum 12.5x2.The Venus Engine III provides a high sensitivity ISO 800 setting that captures images with minimal noise at full resolution. The higher ISO setting lets you use higher shutter speeds to minimize the motion blur that can occur when you're shooting a moving subject, particularly in dim lighting. Even indoors, you can get crisp, clear, beautiful shots of children, pets and other subjects that won't hold still.Choose from several auto focus modes - spot, 1-point (normal or high-speed), 3-point high-speed, and 9-point - to suit the scene you're shooting. The DMC-TZ1 also introduces a new Linear AF system, which has resulted in the achievement of an industry-leading fast auto focusing time. Not only the speed but also the noise of the motor is reduced and even the zooming while recording motion image is possible. Combined with a startup time of merely 0.95 seconds, this fast focusing lets you catch every shooting opportunity. Plus, the AF Assist Lamp helps when focusing in dimly lit places.Thanks to the Venus Engine III, the DMC-TZ1 has a release time lag as low as 0.006 seconds. This is not a bad camera--especially for indoor use--but it lacks an optical viewfinder, and the LCD is useless in sunlight. Certainly one can find a tree to stand under or hold a hat above the camera to put it in shade, etc., but usability is definitely this camera's weak suit.

Also, the cost of the camera is just the beginning: the lithium-ion batteries are expensive. The device also requires an SD card, which is a bit hard to justify from a consumer's point of view since SD protects media companies, not consumers, and the photos you take are your own. When this camera came out, SD was very expensive--more profit for Panasonic. Fortunately, more manufacturers have entered the market and prices aren't so bad.

Rather than buying this, I'd hunt around for something similar with a real viewfinder.

Wish I'd bought a Canon.......2007-06-19

After 10 months I've decided to sell my Panasonic DMC-TZ1. There are too many things I don't like about this camera--the noisy (grainy) photos, the slow USB 1.0 interface, and the fact that I can't hold onto the camera without my thumb changing settings. I had no problem dealing with the lens cap, and the larger size and weight were tolerable. I'm just not happy with the quality of the photos, and I'm going back to my old flame Canon.

I bought this camera for the 10X zoom, anti-shaking features. It takes great clear pictures in the dark and light.

I couldn't be happier and amazed with this camera........2007-06-10

First off I ordered from 'my_cybershops' and received it with 48 hours (from internet order to my front door), thank you for that. I am amazed at the ease of use and brillance/clarity of these photos. Straight out of the box its been a brease. I read all 128 customer comments (before purchasing) and the same 2 comments kept popping up: noise and lens cap. The past 3 nights I've been playing around with it from the inside, to out, well lit areas to dark. I haven't experienced any noises louder then the standard motorized camera. The lens cap truely isn't a problem. You take it off, you put it on. Your order comes along with a string to attach the lens and camera so it won't get lost. I could see there being a problem if your trying to catch a rushed spur of the moment photo and forget its on. In the break down they mention several preset modes for ease of use. There are 19 modes in all. The lithium battery so far has been great. The indicator charge has barely moved and like a cell phone it take very little time to charge. Best feature is definately the zoom! With this zoom you would expect the camera to easily be 4 times the size. I would definately refer this camera to every one I know.

A very fantastic camera. .......2007-06-02

I love this little thing. It travels with me wherever I go, and I use it often. At 5 mgp, you get crystal clear and sharp pictures. There's a bit of a learning curve when it comes to focusing in and out, but it isn't too bad and once you adjust to the camera, taking quick shots with this thing is easy.
My only complaint is that the camera is very easy to scratch - It's outer casing is very soft, and I scratched the paint on the first day.
5 out of 5, though. I love this sleek little thing.
