Amazon.com Product Description
With the addition of the Stylus Epic Zoom 170 QD camera to its popular Stylus line, Olympus has introduced several new features, including an extremely powerful 4.5x zoom lens, an extra-low dispersion (ED) glass lens element that reduces color aberration when the telephoto lens is fully extended, and a newly developed advanced combination autofocus system. The zoom also includes two aspherical lens elements for crisp, high-contrast images.

The advanced combination autofocus system has a focus range from 2.6 feet to infinity, and automatically switches between active and passive modes to give you the clearest image possible. With the focus lock feature, the camera will even remember your current focus setting for a few seconds so you can reframe your shot. Besides having a completely automatic focus system, the Epic Zoom 170 features autoexposure, as well as auto film loading and rewinding, making it extremely easy and convenient to use.

An intelligent, variable-power built-in flash provides exclusive auto color-balancing and red-eye reduction. In addition, you can set the flash to auto, off, fill-in, or night scene modes to better suit your shooting conditions. If you are shooting when the lens is in wide-angle format, and using ISO 100 color negative film, you get a flash range from 2.6 to 16.4 feet; in telephoto format, the range is 2.6 to 5.9 feet. With ISO 400 color negative film, you get a flash range from 2.6 to 32.8 feet in wide-angle and 2.6 to 11.8 feet in telephoto.

The Epic Zoom 170 QD comes with a date-imprinting option. You can chose from: no data, year-month-day, month-day-year, day-month-year, and day-hour-minute. This guarantees that you will never again forget when you shot each roll of film. It even has an automatic calendar system through the year 2035.

This camera boasts the same lightweight, ultracompact clamshell design as the rest of the sporty Stylus line-up. The sliding cover provides all-weather durability against rain, snow, or water splashed from any direction. Although it isn't waterproof, it gives you worry-free use while skiing, at the beach, or in most foul weather conditions. The real-image zoom viewfinder lets you see exactly how your shot is framed before you take the picture, while the diopter correction adjusts to your individual vision requirements.

5 out of 5 stars Olympus Stylus Epic Zoom 170 QD 35mm camera.......2006-08-25

I ordered this camera used a year ago through Amazon to try it out. However, the used camera always gave me trouble. The zoom would not work with the autofocus or the flash and when putting in a new roll of film it often went right to rewind and I lost a roll of film. But I did like the quality of pictures the camera produced and the ease of operation. I have been very pleased with this new camera. Everything works and I got my first roll of developed pictures back and was very pleased with the quality.

4 out of 5 stars Good camera for the price.......2005-10-26

I had an Olympus Accura for seven years and loved it so when it crashed I wanted another Olympus. I've only had this one for a few weeks, am still getting used to it. It's different than the other Olympus in that it doesn't take AA batteries and you have to hold it differently because of the flash and because it slides open whereas the other one opened when you pushed the button on top. That's the only problem I've had so far -- a couple of times I inadvertently shut it off by holding it wrong. I was pleased with the first roll of film I took with this camera -- only one blurred shot, and a nice close-up of a rose. Sometimes to get a close photo you need to use the zoom instead of just getting close. It always takes me awhile to get used to new stuff, but I think once I learn to use this camera I'll like it as much as the other. The zoom is cool and easy to use. Everyone says go digital, but with digital you lose the element of surprise and imperfection and that's what makes photography interesting. Plus all the girls see their picture and say, Ooh, I don't look good in that one, delete it! With this camera you can't delete so you don't end up tossing pictures that someone will like when they're old and gray and didn't recognize how good they looked at 23. I give this four stars -- I can't give it five stars because I haven't mastered it yet.

4 out of 5 stars Super.......2005-08-16

This little beauty is bringing back my love of photos. I still enjoy film cameras as much as digital. This one has a great zoom and autofocus; so getting just the right shot is easy.

3 out of 5 stars I have mixed feelings on this one........2005-08-07

Really, I wish I could give this 3.75 stars. At three stars, I feel like I'm low-balling it.

I didn't pay full price for this camera. If I had, I may not have been as happy with it. It has its flaws, that's true. When the zoom lens is extended out all the way, I have never been able to capture a non-blurry photo. I kind of expected that might be the case when I bought it and other reviewers have cautioned on this issue, so I don't really feel particularly let down by it. I always take hyper-zoomed pictures with the understanding that it might just not work out. Unfortunately, I've yet to be proven wrong.

The thing that actually bothers me is the flash. It has several flash settings for different times of day. There's even an option for no flash. Sometimes though, when that option is clearly not going to be useful, it would be nice if the flash wasn't so spot-like. It doesn't diffuse over the entire frame very well, I guess you could say. I have several pictures where I can clearly tell where the flash went off as it's brighter in that part of the picture; sometimes just a tad, sometimes considerably so. Its biggest downfall is at mid-dusk when the light is too dim for no flash but is just dark enough to expose its spot-like flash problem.

I offer all of that with the caveat that when it's not mid-dusk and not at the absolute end of the zoom length, it takes great pictures. Really, it does. It works peachy all day and nearly all night, save for mid-dusk. When you don't use the flash- perhaps for ambient, moody pictures- it gathers light very well and you'll get what you want.
