Amazon.com Review
The Action Sampler takes a great idea and turns it into a fun little camera. This camera uses four lenses to capture four different photos on one frame of film. The Action Sampler takes the photos a fraction of a second apart, creating an "action sample" that shows the sequence of motion. (Click on the "More Pictures" link at the top of this page to see sample photos that were taken with the Action Sampler.)
Brought to you by the same folks who produce the famous Lomo camera, the Action Sampler shares the Lomo's wacky, creative image--as evidenced in the glossy, photo-filled little manual that comes with the camera and is a work of art in itself. The Action Sampler is also a study in styling with its colorful, plastic see-through case. It doesn't have a flash and sports only a flip-up square of pink plastic to frame your photos. Everything is manual, including film loading, winding, and rewinding, and there are no settings to fiddle with.
As the manual blithely states, "The Action Sampler is not a finely tuned piece of apparatus made only of the finest in hand-crafted modern materials. It's made of plastic." In short, this means you shouldn't expect sharp, detailed pictures. However, you can expect truly unique, fun, and often striking sequences of photos. The Action Sampler uses normal 35mm film but needs plenty of light (outdoor photos turn out the best), so if you want to use it indoors, we recommend using a higher-speed film (ISO 400 or higher).
The Action Sampler is a blast to use, and it makes a great gift. While it has its limitations, its distinctive way of seeing the world is fun and exciting. --Holly Blumenthal

Product Description
Enough of early bedtimes, your Actionsampling night fever is here. Using the same beloved 4-shot format of LOMO's classic Actionsampler, the Actionsampler Flash tosses in an additional 4-step sequential flash. With one push of the shutter button, all four lenses fire in perfect synchronicity with the rapid-fire flash. Flash at night to reveal critical action at parties, concerts, and nocturnal events. Flash in the day to fill in those highlights. Uses standard 35mm film and standard processing.

One trick pony.......2007-04-13
Okay, let's be clear about something. The Action Sampler is not a Lomo despite it's being sold and branded by Lomography.com. It IS a toy camera. What you get are 4 frames, each timed 1/200 of a second apart on one frame of 35mm film.
You do not get focus, ASA/ISO controls, shutter speed controls or anything other than a very basic light sensor that determines whether or not the flash fires and the flash itself which is supposedly synchronized to the shutter, although I'm not convinced that it actually is.
The four frames are cool but that's this camera's one trick. It's all it does. The optics are terrible quality. If you're old enough to remember the old Instamatic cameras with the 110 film cartridges and the terrible resolution they had, well, this will make you feel all dated and nostaligic.
That said, this camera is a blast. You can take pictures of movement but because the lenses all point in slightly different directions, it's you can shoot still images and get 4 very different photos to choose from. And if you like the lo-fi picture quality or the subtle Andy Warhol-esque look of your new 4 framed pictures and don't care too much about getting a really good picture, you'll have a wonderful time.
The lenses are focused at "infinity" meaning everything after a few feet is in in focus. Close-up/macro stuff is out of the question. As far as ASA/ISO, I use 1600 or 800 and have it pushed one stop in the lab (effectively making it 1600 with artifacts) or the pictures come out too dim in anything other than the brightest sunlight. That's right, indoor shooting or shooting in the shade is out unless you use really fast film, which also degrades the detail quality.
Like the Lomo LC-A and LC-A+, there is a little vignetting but this is not a Lomo and you shouldn't order one thinking that it is. The Lomo LC-A is it's own delightfully weird little camera and takes brilliant shots that put this little toy to shame. The action sampler is also about twice as big as a real Lomo.
Think of the Action Sampler as a great nearly disposable party/road trip camera. More fun to use with your friends than alone. If I lost mine, I am not certain if I would replace it but I have seriously considered buying a bunch and giving them out as stocking stuffers next holiday season.
This is a 2.5 star camera but I'm giving it a 3rd star because of how much fun it can be. Not a serious camera but a really fun toy.
it is a fun camera.......2007-01-24
yeah, it's cheap. you can't be rough with it, but you really shouldn't be rough with any camera. unique, fun pictures. no complaints.
great while it lasted.......2006-11-06
rewind knob snapped after a couple months of light use. otherwise, very fun camera.
lomographic junk.......2006-11-03
I purchased the camera on 8/2/06 and shot a roll of film over the course of about 2weeks, when I was finished I tried to rewind the camera and it would not rewind, the film was exposed and ruined. I thought I had done something wrong so I shot another roll of film with the same rusult, the rewind did not work. I reread camera instructions and looked up rewinding instructions on the internet. Like an idiot I shot a third roll of film, the camera is defective"; a piece of junk. I am out 3 rolls of film and irreplaceable photos.
Exciting Way to Take Pictures.......2006-05-20
If you are looking for a fun, exciting new way to take pictures,
definitely give the Lomography Action Sampler a try. What you get is a photo that is in quarters, so four little photos in one all taken rapidly (they say one second!) apart from each other in sequence. You can get really fun action shots - jumping or just moving the head, funny faces, swinging hair, waving - the possiblities are endless!
I'll agree with the other reviews that suggest using high speed film (400 works best for me), when I first got the camera, I put regular old 100 speed in and most of the shots were a little blurry. They still looked really cool, but with the higher speed film, you get much sharper images.
Another tip I learned is that when you drop the film off for processing, it's a good idea to tell them that you are printing film shot with a Lomo. My processing place told me that a lot of times they just try to make sure the center of the print is in focus while processing, but with this film the center is four corners of your pictures (hope that makes sense!) so it takes a little more effort on the technicians part to get good prints from your negatives.
All in all, I am absolutely in love with my Lomo Action Sampler. It travels in my purse daily and I get some great shots! I couldn't ask for anything more.

Not what I expected........2006-11-10
The camara supposed to take 4 different shots, that never happenned, a slight change you could see in pictures I took running while pressing the shot.
The frames are also cut by a bold marging that is really annoying.
So much fun!.......2005-06-23
This is the first Lomo Camera I had purchased, after I learned about Lomography. What a fun camera-this is what got me addicted! I take it with me everywhere now-you never know when you will need it!
Badly made rubbish.......2005-05-06
When I bought one of these I knew that it was a plastic toy type camera, but I was suprised at exactley how plasticy and cheap it was, especially for its not cheap price.
I tried one roll of film in it - the results were so bad, the lab didn't bother printing it and just gave me the negs and a contact print; the last lens in sequence jammed open and the film transport was so terrible that everything overlapped resulting in mostly nothing on the negatives. I took it back to where I got it for a full refund.
Yes I expected blur, I expected vignetting, I expected suprises. What I did not expect was such terrible build quality and results.
This camera is a nice idea, if they were actually made well, it would be great - but it is mass produced plastic junk. Buying one is a lottery - you may be lucky, you might not. I'm sad to say, don't waste your money.
don't think, just shoot.......2002-12-25
i love this camera. granted, when i first got it i had problems with it. but it's just so different that i had to adjust to it. it's not supposed to give you wonderfully clear and crisp photos. that's part of the fun. this camera allows you to capture your own little world in ways that perhaps you hadn't seen before. shooting from the hip, so to speak, is the best way to use this camera. the only downfall is getting used to loading film manually and then rewinding it when you're pretty sure it's done. it's more for fun and experimentation so if you're not into that then don't get this. but if you want every roll of film you develop to be a surprise, then get it! :)
the Horror!.......2002-03-21
...ignore the directions and get 800 speed film and only take pictures outdoors (on BRIGHT AND SUNNY days, and at HIGH NOON). Since its not very well made, you have to be very careful. And it hurts your thumbs to advance the film to the next frame. I like the supersampler better.

Fun to use but don't expect professional results........2004-08-31
My friend bought this and gave it to me before she moved so I was only going to be out $10 to shoot off a roll. I am impressed. I got some really good pics with it, but just as many came out god awful and totally useless. Then again most rolls of film you shoot come out that way.
The quality is usually junk, at least one frame is blurred, but that is artsy and underground like their marketing campaign states. I dig it. With time you will find out what subjects work the best. It is really good for people at a distance of 10 feet or less. Because of the cheap lenses and set shutter speed, real busy moving objects are a big blur (I tried taking a few shots of a moving merry-go-round), however when it is just a few objects (say a horse race) the results can be really cool.
In the end if you are looking for a fun camera at parties and for random snapshots, buy this (or try the one with the flash) instead of a crappy disposable thing.
Oh and as their marketing says, warn the person at the photolab. The girl that developed mine was completely confused.
