The most frustrating printer I've ever purchased.......2007-05-06

Sure, the quality of the prints are great and the ability to print onto CDs/DVDs is awesome - *IF* you can get the printer to feed the CD/DVD tray or good quality paper. I purchased this printer about 8 months ago and it started acting up after the first few months... now it's a giant, frustrating paperweight - Sitting on my desk, mocking me.

It's not like I don't feed it plenty (and I mean PLENTY) of ink whenever it's hungry.

Ungrateful little printer...

Decent photo printer!.......2007-05-04

I have this printer for 5 months now and printed quite some photos as well as normal text prints. Overall I'm very satisfied with the print quality, especially photos. I've been printing on 8x10 inch premium glossy photo papers and the photos come out very nicely (even not with the highest quality setting). I prepare to frame some of them and hang on my walls.

Epson is a better printer maker than any other brands. During the 5 months I have printing problem for only once, when the photos came out with faint lines. The problem is easily identified after I read the manual, and fixed after I spent 5 minutes to clean the printhead.

One con is that sometimes the photos come out with slightly different colors than on the computer screen. But after I check the "auto color correction" in the printing option, this issue became minimum.

Another con, though I know it is probably the same with all printer brands, is that the ink (esp. black) runs out quickly with large photo prints. Never printed CD though.

This printer sucks.......2007-04-30

I had the R220 and it was better then the 340. With the 340 the CD/DVD tray sticks. If I don't push it in myself it will get stuck and give me an error. Don't buy this printer.

Flawed, but now fixed..........2007-03-17

In general, this is a GREAT printer. The picture printing is very impressive when using the right paper, and the text printing is laser quality.

Now, on to the best, yet most frustrating feature of this line of printers, direct CD/DVD printing.

I too have had my share of feed issues with the Epson CD tray on several different printers (R200, R220, R340), but I have just discovered and solved the most frustrating of them, the one T.J. Vondrell is evidently having. The tray was being drawn in too far at the beginning of a CD print job, causing the subsequent ejection cycle to push the tray out UNDER the drop-down tray platform. I found that the sideways-mounted roller on the right side of the platform was sticking. The associated microswitch at that roller is what stops the initial insertion, at which point indexing using an optical reader commences as the reader looks at the white marks on the tray. When the roller springs back out as the tray clears it on the initial insertion, the tray is stopped, and the indexing begins. If it sticks, the tray just keeps on going out the back of the printer, and the printer generates all those frustrating error messages, not to mention the grinding sound of the tray coming back out of place under the tray platform. A VERY brief shot of WD40 using the provided spray straw to the roller fixed ALL tray issues with my 2nd brand new R340. I will now apply the same lube job to my other Epson printers. I hope this tidbit relieves a lot of frustration from you other Epson users. This is an easy fix, and one that Tech Support at Epson should be well aware of, but apparently isn't, as I now have a new R340 sent as a replacement for my 1st one that was doing the same thing. I have emailed them, and I hope they post it on their FAQ page. This fix should apply to all Epson printers that have a similar drop-down CD tray platform.

P.S. As a rule now, I try to remember to give the tray a slight nudge as the CD print job begins. This should help extend the life of the somewhat weak roller system that pulls the tray in. I have a couple of well-used R-series printers that now require this assist, or the tray will not be drawn in.

Is a tad bit inaccurate.......2007-01-10

Well, I go this printer because I do event videography and I needed a printer to print directly to DVDs and also print the DVD labels. I used to use my past roommate's printer, and it worked perfectly fine, besides the occasional DVD tray jams. So I went and bought my own printer. I took it out the box and followed the prep instructions, but since I have a mac, it took me longer than expected for the computer to recognize the printer.

After I got the drivers and programs installed, the printer worked just fine. But there are a couple issues I have with this printer. One is that it NEVER prints exactly the same way for 2 or more consecutive images...even when the images are the same, and have the same dimensions. For one print, it will start higer in the page, for another it will start lover, but the one that frustrates me the most is when it grabs the paper unevenly and prints DIAGONALLY. Sometimes it will print 8x10s at a 1-3 degree diagonal to the parallel of the page, which makes me mad because that in addition to not printing at the same startpoint makes it impossible for me to print double sided labels without something messing up.

After 2 months, I have to agree with the naysayers.......2007-07-02

At first this bugger printed great. I was happy. I bought six new cartridges for it around May 5th, 2007. I printed 6 CD/DVD's and maybe 10-15 pages (usually on economy or draft settings to save ink) and then it sat from about May 10th until about June 12th. When I tried to use it, The status monitor reported all cartridges approximately 2/3 full. When I tried to print, I got tons of drop outs in the printing so I tried cleaning the cartridges. The first cleaning helped a tiny bit, so I cleaned them again. Well, after about 6 cleanings it was beginning to look much better and I thought I was ready to go...but wait...it then reported that I was completely out of ink on ALL cartridges ???!! What the ???? That's right, I went from 2/3 full to empty after 6 head cleanings. Kinda expensive wouldn't ya say Epson? I'm taking the cartridges back to see if I can exchange them...this seems like a scam to me.

Great when it works..........2007-05-01

It is great when the heads are not clogged, but heads clog all the time and to clean them takes 2 sets of ink cartridges, even with an aftermarket solvent. It used ink so fast, it is cheaper to just buy a new one. I wish I had instead of all the money on ink.

There are MUCH better choices.......2007-01-20

This printer was a gift(and I am grateful for the thoughtfulness), but darn it, if you're looking for a great deal, this one isn't it.
1. every time it prints, it cleans the printer heads, wasting ink.
2. it goes through ink quickly and you can't just keep on printing if one it out. Nope, it has to be replaced.
3. You can't op NOT to print in color on the printers menu.
4. Replacing 6 cartridges costs more that the printer did.

I wasn't very impressed with the quality of the images it produced. I still love my Deskjet, and we've been using that instead.

The one thing I do like about it, is that it feeds small items better.

and there is no epson dealer here if you think this review is about bad luck with the priner check epson site and it is there as one of the printers to be replace by warranty now if it is good why is it on the list of replacement printers no good epson need to get this right amazon is world wide for shoppers and if they keep doing this customers will shy away from their product another thing is the dvd tray keeps comming out of the back of the printer will not buy this product again and don't recomend it to any one oops i droped it from my balcony.

Quality Printer - Good Prints, Fast, Not as Pricy As Expected.......2006-06-11

I've owned epsons before and they all used ink fast and it was expensive. The overall experience i have with epsons has been fantastic though so I am willing to pay extra. This printer has been great so far. The photos are excellent and the disk printing is neat but i've really only played with it. People say they have problems with ink clogging but i do not use generics and i have not had problems. I have been told to keep it off when not in use and maybe that has helped. And at about $8 a color cartdridge shipped from amazon in a multipack, i am happy to buy the genuine epson ink. Again, another quality printer from epson.
