1 out of 5 stars What's worse than the printer is HP itself..........2007-05-18

I bought a Deskjet 9800 printer in February of this year. I had to return it the next day to the store I bought it from because it wanted to take multiple sheets of paper at a time. I exchanged it and got another one. The second one worked, until about the 89th day that I had it and then it stopped communicating with the computer. Apparently the USB port on the printer failed.

After wasting a ton of time with tech support (most of whom could not speak English clearly), their solution was to send me a parallel cable. Ha! Does anyone even use those anymore? I don't even have a card on my computer for one. So, I asked for a replacement. I still had the receipt, the box, everything. I was told that they do not replace anything with a new product, and that I would have to exchange it for a refurbished one. I bought a new printer, and they wanted to give me an old one that had already had problems with it. Their tech support was also rude to me and refused to let me speak to a supervisor. When I finally did get to speak to a supervisor after calling back a second time, they were no help either. Even when I called their corporate offices they wouldn't budge on giving me a new printer. "It's not their policy." They didn't care that I was an unhappy customer at all, or that I had wasted over two hours of my evening having their tech support in India treat me like I was not important.

Their customer service is terrible and they DO NOT stand behind their products. Save yourself a bunch of trouble and DO NOT buy this printer. It is a piece of junk. Judging from the reviews on here, it seems like it's an endemic problem.

I'm never buying another thing from HP. A company that doesn't stand behind their products, does not make good products. They used to be good, I have HP stuff from many years ago that still works. Obviously they're doing like every other great company does, relying on their name to sell their products and forgetting about the important things, like customer service and quality products.

The only thing that saved the day was that Office Depot was willing to take back the $300 piece of junk, despite the fact that it was way outside of their return policy, and give me store credit. A big thumbs up to Office Depot and a big thumbs down to HP.

5 out of 5 stars User-friendly HP Deskjet 9800.......2007-05-16

I just installed and started using my new HP Deskjet 9800, and set-up from open-box to first print was about 10 minutes. Pretty straight forward. I also rate this unit high because it is the best/least expensive option I found for having capability to print to 11" x 17" media. This is a size I use often for engineering figures and diagrams in my reports. Other options for this capability run in the $400-$700 range and are much larger/"bulky" footprints on a desk. Although this might not be the best answer for some folks, it meets my needs very well.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, not great.......2007-03-24

OK HP have maybe 25% lemon printers, but they have lots.

Dunno yet for the 9800. Quality OK. Page size kinda difficult. Price great.

Change-more soon.

2 out of 5 stars Not up to the Task--Miserable Tech Support.......2007-03-24

We had this printer less than 6 months before the cartridge slider began to jam. We would get an error message, and then would have to reset the printer and reboot the computer to get it to work for a short while. We finally ended up sending back the printer on their exchange program, after I had to ask to speak to a supervisor. (The tech support wanted us to install a free ink cartridge when I had already installed several before contacting them) We have had the replacement printer less than two months and are already experiencing problems again. The ink cartridge is pooling ink under the cartridge rest area in a very heavy amount, and the cartridge slider again has begun to jam. Tech support has had us clean the plastic tape that pulls the cartridge carrier back and forth, and for now the unit is working. We still haven't addressed the excessive ink leak which probably has something to do with the jamming problem. I hope HP reviews comments on this website occasionally. I would like them to know I have believed in their printers and used them successfully for years, but my latest experience has caused me to reexamine that position. Also, HP tech support is very difficult to deal with at best. I talked to several overseas tech support reps that spoke almost unintelligible English. I am one consumer willing to pay a little more for a product that is well supported. HP are you listening?

4 out of 5 stars Great for 11x17 Preliminary reviews.......2007-03-17

If you need something inexpensive like I did to show clients your preliminary sketches....then this is the printer to go with. It gives you clean black lines for your drawings..and for a Preliminary plan, that's all one needs. Instead of having to waste your 24x36 Plotter paper, this is the way to go.
Changing the paper sizes can be a little cumbersome...but hey for the price, it works...:-)

5 out of 5 stars wide format printing.......2007-03-26

I am still learning this machine, but so far so good. I have not done my mass mailing yet, and again, what I have printed so far is of excellent quality. Very easy to set up. For the cost conscious this is a good introduction to the wide format experience.
