5 out of 5 stars This Printer Rocks!!!.......2007-07-01

I have owned this printer for over two weeks and am I impressed with it every day. The printer prints amazing pictures and if you just want to print text documents or pages off the web it does a great job of that also. I have owned other printers from different companies including past Canon printers but I have to say I will be keeping this one until it breaks down on me. It is that good!!!

    1 out of 5 stars Defective.......2007-07-01

I was impressed by the features and many positivie reviews for this printer. I ordered it and eagerly set it up. Unfortunately, I didn't even get to load any paper, because I got an error during running set up. The error message was not in the direction book, so I called customer service. Long story short, the technician could not help. He suggested I send it back to Canon at my cost and then Canon would send a refurbished one. I returned it to Amazon and, thinking I had just got unlucky, ordered the same printer again. Well, I couldn't believe it, but the second one wouldn't work either. I didn't get the same error message, but the paper would not feed through the machine. this time when I returned it, I ordered the epson r380 instead. It installed easily and works great so far.

Perhaps I was just unlucky twice, but there seem to be quality control problems. Buyer beware.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-06-27

Except for the fact that a scanned text document output in PDF takes
a very large space, everything else was fine, and Iam very happy with my
    purchase

    5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-06-27

High quality at a low price. I really never needed a machine at home that printed more than black and white drafts of manuscripts. When I work on a paper at home or want to print from the web, I don't care whether I have color. However, once I got this machine, I was amazed at the quality of printing and copying. The menu on the machine allows you to choose black and white vs. color printing and copying. I never knew how convenient it was to have a copy machine at home until now. (I don't need a fax, and I haven't yet tried the scan feature on the machine.) I have only a few quibbles with the clarity of set-up directions, and a USB cable was NOT included. Be ready with your own cable if you're in a hurry to set it up. Other than that, so far (I bought it about a month ago) I love it.

    5 out of 5 stars A non-profit director's dream of a printer.......2007-06-15

As executive director of a developing statewide non-profit that recently received its first small grant, I had significant demands in a printer. I needed a printer versatile enough to provide high quality scanning, quick and professional grade high volume printing, and ease of use. This printer has delivered far beyond my high expectations.

The easy scroll wheel makes this printer a dream to use. Replacing ink cartridges is intuitive and the entire design is user-friendly. The separate ink cartridges and light display when changing cartridges are very helpful. In addition, it is easy to see ink volumes on the easy scroll wheel and on my computer screen. The printer informs you when one of the ink cartridges is running low well in advance. I was able to print about 15 full colour brochures after receiving the low ink warning before I changed the Black 5 Pigment cartridge.

I was impressed that I was able to print 200+ double-sided, full colour (yes, Brit spelling) brochures on thick, high gloss paper without any smudging or bleeding. The ink cartridge lasted until the end of my printing, after I had already printed over a hundred full colour brochures on plain paper. Ink may be more expensive than with other printers, but I've never had ink cartridges provide as much use as these.
A print job that would have cost $2 per brochure for a total of $400 ended up costing me under $100 including high quality, double-sided gloss paper and the replacement ink cartridges for the Black 5 pigment ink. After only one print run, this printer has now paid for itself in the money that I saved. The images and text appear sharp and high resolution. I received multiple compliments on the brochures at a conference yesterday.

I asked the customer service employee at Staples why this printer had two different Black ink cartridges. He told me that the printer usually defaults to using the Black 8 ink for plain paper printing, but that it automatically defaulted to using Black 5 pigment ink for this print job because the Black 5 pigment ink dries more quickly and is more suitable for brochures. I didn't select anything different than if I were printing a letter, the computer just decided (correctly) for me. Again, painless and simple. On another printer, this print job would have required me to play around with different settings. Ideally, you should check print setup to select the correct paper type, paper feed location, and page setup before you print. However, even without doing that, this printer still managed to get it right.

I did not get a single paper jam, except for when I overloaded the paper feed tray with 50+ extra thick brochures, which was definitely my fault. I was impressed that, unlike on the HP I have at my other office, this printer stopped running immediately as soon as the paper began to jam and put a message on my computer screen about the paper jam. Because the printer stopped so quickly, even the jammed sheet was not fully damaged and none of the other pages were affected. Yet another mark of superior quality. For once, the images on my screen actually looked BETTER in print than in print preview. The photos I printed appeared to have been professionally developed upon close glance, though I am admittedly not a professional photographer.

Installation was easy, without the bugs I experience constantly with my HP. My colleague has an Epson, which is better quality than my HP, but is incredibly slow and loud. He has started to use mine because printing on the Canon MP600 is so much quicker, quieter, and higher in visual quality.

There are only three potential drawbacks to this machine that I can envision:

1 Size- It does take up a larger space than many other printers, though this appears to be because it has solid, sturdy construction. It does not appear flimsy at all. I am rough on my equipment and it has held up to over a month of hard, continuous use. I realise that is not a long time, but I've printed the same volume for my non-profit in a month as a personal user might in an entire year. Also, this printer IS smaller than some of the expensive laser printers that many businesses use. It's mainly large when compared with most printers designed for home use.

2 No fax- I generally prefer not to send sensitive documents by fax and use Skype instead of a ground phone line. This printer does not have a fax, so you may want to get e-fax or use Skax if you use Skype (which I highly recommend because you can make domestic and foreign calls from your own number with voicemail for less than $100 a year).

3 Ink costs- The ink costs seem high. However, I got twice as much colour printing per ink cartridge as I did with the HP. So, while ink may appear to cost twice as much, the reality is that it probably costs about the same amount when actual volume per dollar is calculated. Buying in bulk or searching online for the lowest price will save money. The multipack containing all of the 8 ink cartridges seems to offer the most cost-effective solution, just remember that you will also need to purchase Black 5 pigment.

This is a 10 star printer out of a possible 5 stars. If it had a built-in fax, slightly smaller size, and less expensive ink, even my perfectionist self would be unable to find a single fault with this printer.

Aside from these three minor drawbacks, this printer is flawless.
For a printer in the $100-$200 price range, I would recommend this printer above all others I have encountered. Bravo, Canon.

    5 out of 5 stars Holy Cow!.......2007-06-26

I was so sick and tired of the consistently-poor performance that I had gotten out of my long line of HPs, that I had nearly given up on the idea of printing photos from home.

Then I found the Canon Pixma IP 4300. With its 9600 X 2400 resolution and its 3584 nozzles, I am getting near-photo lab prints every time.

I love Canon! I love this printer!

4 out of 5 stars So far, so good.......2007-06-23

My only complaint so far is that it seems to use too much ink on plain paper. I set the print quality to 'fast' and that helped a lot.

I realize I am using cheap paper, but I have plain paper selected in the setup and would think that the printer would be able to compensate for that.

I paid $60 after MIR from that 'S' office supply store, which I thought was a great deal!

    5 out of 5 stars An artist's delight!.......2007-06-22

This printer is BIG but very light in weight and it rolls out your prints quickly and velvety.

Like all Canon printers that I have had, the iP4300 needs to be programmed manually. This is easy to do, but if you run on automatic your printed images will be badly over-exposed. With adjustments the printer will produce excellent quality images on just plain paper.

Here are the settings I use for just plain paper. The printed page is rich in color, and is in sharp focus. If you use glossy papers you will probably have to change the settings from mine, but my settings will give you a ball park. The plain paper proofs are so good I'll probably not even use glossy papers. I prefer a matte look to glossy anyway. With these settings, I suggest using a matte paper. There are upscale matte papers.

    Open the properties page
    1. plain paper

    a. ICM (Windows color management)

    c. intensity 50 (dark)

    e. brightness dark

Good luck and Godspeed, and I hope you enjoy your iP4300 as much as I do!

    4 out of 5 stars Title for a review.......2007-06-20

HEAD's UP: You can't just use the printer out of the box. You have to buy a USB cable to connect to the PC because the cable is NOT supplied with the printer. Adds $10 to the price of this printer.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply superb!.......2007-06-09

I have always gone with Epson printers in the past because I felt the printouts were superior. This time I decided to go with Canon because I love my Canon cameras and the ip4300 got very high ratings. When I compared ink costs the decision was made. I have read that the Canon also uses less ink than the competing Epson but I'm not in a position to judge that.

I brought my printer home yesterday and I couldn't be happier. The set up directions were easy to follow and the prints are all "keepers". I really appreciate that when I printed a photo of my daughter I got exactly what I saw on the screen. The Epson had always printed a little dark and I'd learned to compensate when I processed the images but now I can have the same result online and on paper.

An unexpected bonus is that this printer is also very speedy and quiet. The only downside I can think of is that this printer takes up a bit more desk room than my old printer. I have plenty of room but the acreage challenged should measure their available space.

    10 out of 10! 4 thumbs up!

    Fast Printing and Copying
Thanks to the productive 30-page Automatic Document Feeder, this sleek system gives you results at remarkable speeds. Print up to 29 pages per minute (ppm) in black-and-white, and 19 ppm in color. An advanced duplex unit lets you print on both sides of the paper while the two practical paper trays make it a snap to print DVD and CD labels. There's no need to spend time and money taking your photos to a developing lab, either; thanks to the MP530 you can print a 4 x 6 inch borderless photo in approximately 51 seconds in Standard mode. Copying speeds are equally rapid and add to overall productivity -- the MP530 offers 28 copies per minute (cpm) in mono and 19 cpm in color.

Super G3 Faxing and High-Quality Scanning
The MP530 comes equipped with a Super G3 modem that transmits faxes at up to three seconds per page. Dialing is quick and easy as 40 coded speed dials store your regular numbers. For added security, the 150-page fax memory safely stores all incoming faxes if paper or ink runs out. This way, your important documents are ready to print later.

The built-in scanner makes it easy to scan photos and documents. With a 1200 by 2400 dpi optical resolution, the MP530 delivers crisp and clear color scans. There's also a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed interface that speeds up image transfer to your PC so you can share your scans in minutes. This feature is ideal for small offices or anyone who wishes to share their photos or other documents with friends and family.

The MP530 utilizes Canon's FINE technology with tiny, one picoliter ink droplets that deliver a stunning 9600 by 2400 dots per inch (dpi) print resolution. And because the MP530 is PictBridge ready, you can print photos directly from all PictBridge compatible digital cameras and camcorders. You don't even need a PC! Now you won't have to wait to see your images; instead, enjoy professional results just moments after your photos are taken. In addition, the MP530 features Canon's ChromaLife100 system of print heads and ink, both of which, when used with Canon genuine photo paper, can preserve your memories by producing long-lasting beautiful photos that keep their color for up to 100 years when stored in a photo album.

    Economical Single Ink System
The MP530 is an economic, cost-efficient unit, thanks to its single-ink system. This system minimizes wasted ink, saving you money over the long run. For efficient ink use, a large pigment black ink tank is dedicated to text-based document printing, copying and faxing, whereas four dye ink tanks take care of photo printing.

The MP530 comes with a one year warranty.

    What's in the Box
PIXMA MP530 office all-in-one printer, power cord, telephone line cable, print heads, ink tanks (PGI-5BK black, CLI-8 black, cyan, magenta, and yellow), easy setup instructions, software, registration card, cross sell sheet, and canon photo paper sample pack.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Would recommend this printer highly..........2007-07-01

This printer is our second all-in-one made by canon. Our first all-in-one was the canon F80. It served us well for 5 years.

We recently purchased the MP530 and are extremely happy with it. This machine does a great job printing, copying, faxing and scanning. A great all-in-one. This printer also does an excellent job printing photos on photo paper. We do have a designated photo printer...Canon Pixma iP6600D...on which I print our photos. But, the MP 530 does nearly as nice of a job!

I have called Canon tech support because I had a slight problem with scanning. Tech support was VERY helpful and we resolved my problem. The problem wasn't with the scanner, it was that I had 2 USB cords connected together to reach the MP530, therefore the scanner wasn't getting enough power to scan with. While on the phone with tech support, I reconnected with only one cord and the problem was fixed. So, it was my problem, not the printers.

More good news...in the 11 years that I have owned Canon printers, I only had to call tech support once!!!

I've always loved Canon printers. My first printer was a canon back about 11 years ago and it is still working for my mom.

In summary....GREAT JOB, CANON FOR ANOTHER FINE PRODUCT!

    5 out of 5 stars excellent machine!.......2007-07-01

I have always liked Canon's pruducts and this one is even better yet!
I haven't had it long but I have tested each function and they all work beautifully! I print a lot of photo's and they look fabulous!
I haven't had it long enough to judge ink usage but so far so good!

    3 out of 5 stars Great Machine......BUT with a HUGE Con.......2007-06-27

You read it all over this machine is great in what it does. I sort of had beetr expectations on photo quality but still very acceptable especially if you use good photo paper. What really-really turns me off with this machine is that it does not allow use of generic ink cartridges. Even if you install a generic one it will not be able to print anything, not even by using colors from the ink tanks that are full. Each ink cartridge costs $15.00. I would not recommend this printer if you want to save money on the ink. Thus the 3 stars. I am going to sell it and try to find a most cost effective machine.

2 out of 5 stars Horrible design for black text printing with duplexing - same issue as MP830.......2007-06-26

This printer is getting rave reviews from both PC Magazine and PC World. That said, there's a big problem with this printer that neither review mentions: namely, duplex black text printing from ALL applications produces inferior results than when duplexing is off--and uses colour ink to produce black text when printing in duplex mode. Consequently, until this issue is addressed, the MP530 is difficult for me to recommend.

Why? According to Canon technical support, the design flaw is by choice. But more on that later.

If I don't duplex print on fast mode, the text looks very good (the problem is duplex text printing). The print quality when duplex text printing looks dotty and washed out. If you turn duplexing off, the text print quality is vastly superior. The difference on fast mode when not duplex printing is quite astounding. Simply using duplex printing makes the text quality significantly worse on fast mode.

One might be inclined to believe bad quality from fast mode text printing isn't a big deal (except that the MP530 is quite capable of producing very good text quality even at fast mode--except when duplexing), but this problem also extends to standard printing when duplexing is enabled. That said, in standard mode the problem isn't as pronounced.

Basically the MP530 is using the colour inks to produce black text instead of the pigment black ink when printing text in duplex mode. I find this to be extremely bothersome. The problem exists when duplexing text in other printing quality modes, but it's most apparent or obvious when duplexing text on fast mode.

You won't find this issue listed in professional reviews from PCMagazine or PC World, simply because the reviewers probably didn't bother to check. For whatever reason, missing this issue is pretty sloppy.

If you want good text quality when duplex printing, it's best not to use this printer at all: you're using color ink instead of the black pigment ink--and the text looks vastly inferior as a result.

This is from Canon technical support:

"The unit was designed to print using "composite black" when duplexing. Composite black is created by using color inks. Unfortunately, we do not have answers as to why Canon USA made this decisions, these decisions are determined by the developers at Canon INC."

Absolutely brutal. Composite black text print is vastly inferior to the text print produced when using the black ink cartridge. Canon technical support is basically telling me that duplex black text printing on the MP830 is horrible by design. Oh, plus you have the added bonus of wasting color ink when printing inferior black text while duplexing.

    Inexcusable

Upon inquiring further, this is the reason Canon technical support gives for using color ink to produce black text while duplex printing:

"Composite black is least likely to show through the other side of the document, which may occur when using black ink and printing on both sides of the paper. "

Then why can I print text on one side, flip the page over manually, print text on the other side, and not experience any issue with ink showing through to the other side? The text quality looks vastly superior when I do this instead of duplexing (I do not experience any issues).

It shouldn't be that difficult to allow a printer driver option to use the pigmented black ink with a longer drying time (because I've also been told by Canon pigmented black ink may smear when duplex priting) if that's what the customer would prefer, instead of inflicting poor text quality produced by color inks when duplex black text printing.

This issue is very easily reproduced:

Print text in fast mode with duplexing on. Then print text in fast mode with duplexing off.

    Night and day

It's not just fast mode that's affected either; it's all print quality modes when duplex printing is enabled. More importantly, all customers have the added bonus (in addition to poor black text quality while duplexing) of wasting color ink when printing black text with the duplex printing option enabled.

Canon's response to this is that pigmented black ink will smear, bleed, or show through to the other side when duplex printing. Contrary to Canon's claim, I am not experiencing any issues when printing black text in standard mode on one side of cheap Britex Premier Multiusage paper (20 lb 92 bright . . . I paid less than a dollar for 500 sheets on sale), flipping the page over manually, and printing the other side again on standard. Regardless of whether I've tested using tons of different papers (and I admit I haven't), again, it shouldn't be that difficult to allow a printer driver option to use the pigmented black ink with a longer drying time if that's what the customer would prefer, instead of inflicting poor text quality produced by composite black (created by using color inks) when duplexing black text.

5 out of 5 stars Super all around.......2007-06-19

My 9 year old HP was dying, and my office said that they'd pay for an all-in-one for me. I reserached a lot and it was between this one, an HP (I had always owned HPs) or a Dell. And I selected this one because it has more nozzles for better picture printing for a great price of $158.

I am VERY happy with the unit. Packing was great; undamaged in transit. Instructions are clear enough, albeit not super. Menu system is also easy enough to use, but the 2-line LCD screen reminds me of my first fax machine 10 years ago. (The Dell had a full 5 line color screen.)

This Canon looks SLICK; very stylish. The front door automatically opens when it starts printing -- like a kid I will never get over how cool that is. It takes up paper as its printing, so it literally prints a page and then goes right to the next one (vice my HP would take up one page, finish printing a page and spit it out, then take up the next sheet, etc.). It's very quick and the fax and copy functions work with one button.

It's pretty quiet (there's an option for Nighttime printing which I guess makes it even quieter) but shakes the desk when it's moving! Paper cassette holds plenty of paper and the auto feed handler works great for the fax.

The unit is BIG, though. Maybe not bigger than others, but much bigger than my old printer. If you're a work-at-home guy like me, you should measure your area before bying any of these units.

I've already recommended this unit to two friends. I'm very pleased.

Need a hard copy of directions to a friends house or information from a web page? The single function iP6700D gives you more choices, more features and a better value, no matter what your needs. It also works fast, offering print speeds of 47 seconds for 4 x 6 inch borderless photos and 76 seconds for 8 x 10 inch photos. And the built-in two sided printing feature and second paper tray drastically reduce wait times. In addition, the iP6700D utilizes Canon Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) technology and the ChromaLife100 ink system to produce high-quality, long-lasting photos. With smart LED equipped ink tanks and the Canon Advanced Paper Handling System, the iP6700D has the capabilities of a photo kiosk built right in.

    Easy Operation and Exceptional Resolution
The iP6700D features 3,072 precision nozzles that create exceptional resolution of up to 9600 by 2400 color dots per inch (dpi). You'll also enjoy amazing, eye-catching detail in every print, thanks to microscopic one-picoliter sized ink droplets. Two high-intensity photo inks plus four conventional inks equals precise, life-like color. You get all this with simple, convenient operation. First, the iP6700D gives you the option to preview before you print. This way, you can fine-tune your images before you commit to printing them out. When you're ready, just connect your PictBridge ready digital camera, DV camcorder, or compatible memory card and print. It's truly that simple. For added convenience, the iP6700 also lets you print wirelessly right from your infrared-enabled mobile camera phone, or a compatible Bluetooth device, (using the optional USB Bluetooth adapter). You can do all this quickly and easily thanks to the USB 2.0 interface, which enables the fastest possible image transfers.

Canon ChromaLife100 System For Image Permanence
The iP6700D uses Canon's ChromaLife100 system, including FINE print head technology for vivid photo printing. When using select genuine Canon photo papers and inks, prints can resist fading for up to 100 years when stored in an archival quality photo album. The 100-year-lifespan rivals that of many traditional film based photos, long considered by consumers to be the benchmark for image permanence. Prints produced on Canon Photo Paper Pro with ChromaLife100 inks have an up to 10-year gas fastness when exposed to open air. Additionally, ChromaLife100 prints, when created using Canon Photo Paper Pro or Photo Paper Plus Glossy, have up to 30-year lightfastness when displayed under glass.

    Canon FINE Engineering
Launched globally by Canon in 1999, the Canon Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) advanced print head technology is one of the keys to the impressive speed and high photo quality in PIXMA photo printers. FINE technology uses a ground-breaking high-performance, multi-nozzle print engine that ejects consistent and microscopic ink droplets. The results are high-resolution photos with great detail and clarity in less time.

5 out of 5 stars No more Epson.......2007-06-29

After a year of using Epson R800, which was suppose to be a pretty good photo printer, the heads got clogged, using Epson paper and Epson ink. My prints on the Epson started showing green tints all over the place. And of course, trying to clean the heads took up majority of my ink.

Read great reviews about this printer and the reviews are right. It's very easy to set up out of the box. From the 1st print, I noticed a huge difference to the Epson, when it was working properly. The prints definitely come out looking like what you see on the monitor.

I just picked up prints from the photo shop and compared them to the Canon prints. Canon prints come out look more brighter than the ones I just picked up, which is a huge plus. Other than that, can't really tell the difference. I'm sure someone who's a professional and looking for certain things can tell, but for me, I'm very happy with the results.

Having the LCD screen, memory card reader, paper tray and direct print capability with my Canon cameras is an added bonus.

I've stuck with Canon cameras. Don't know why I didn't stick with Canon printers. Dumb move and lesson learned.

5 out of 5 stars Canon does it again.......2007-06-27

Very good with photos and easy to use plus change only one cartidge at a time

    4 out of 5 stars Great pictures.......2007-06-22

For the money this is definitely one of the best printers for photo printing out there. I only print with Canon photo paper plus glossy and I couldn't tell the difference between the ones printed at home and the store developed prints I had taken at the same time. I would have given 5 stars except that I had some problems printing text. The paper feeder didn't seem to line up right and the pages came out crooked. It may have just been my mistake and I don't print for anything other than personal use so overall I am very happy.

5 out of 5 stars A Printer You Gotta Have.......2007-06-27

Unpack, assemble following the quick start guide, and print pictures that will blow you away. I had an HP photoprinter and was pretty happy, Then it started to give me a few problems. I could not resolve them and had started looking for a printer that would produce pictures that were worthy of my NIKON D-200. This printer MOOORRRREEEE than met my expectations. I think you would be very happy putting this in your office to print your favorite pictures. Make sure you have a LARGE space to put it. The footprint is VERY LARGE. You will need a 30" X 30" space to park it.

    5 out of 5 stars MissB46.......2007-06-27

This is just the printer I've been looking for. It is large enough to do my larger photo printing but versatile enough to keep up with my every day correspondence.

It you want beautiful photos and crisp professional looking documents then this is your printer. If you are impatient and want speed and don't care about the appearance of your photos and documents then this isn't the printer for you. For the price, it's a great deal.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Prints, 1 dissapointment.......2007-06-27

Because of the price of this printer, I was apprehensive about purchasing. When I received it (and it arrived in days which was beyond my expectation) I was very happy with the photo prints. I was however very dissapointed that I used it about 5 times and I had a paper jam. I tried all the recommended trouble shoots on Canons website as well as in the manual and I still could not get it to clear. After emailing Canon they were very helpful, responded within one day and offered two options. Option 1 was to take it to a Authorized service center or they would ship me another printer however it would be refurbished. Because I only had it for less than thirty days, I did not want a refurbished printer since I paid for a new one so I took it to the authorized service center. They were able to fix the problem and they did say it was not because of anything I did. They also commented that this was a really good printer, one of Canons best. All in all I am happy with the printer, I just hope that I don't run into any other problems. The photo prints are really good.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of space, but great results.......2007-06-27

The Pixma Pro9000 has one significant disadvantage- it takes an extraordinary amount of space, but that is inherent in a product that produces 13 by 19 images. The images are excellent, even when using Canon Photo Plus paper and not the art paper which can also be utilized.

4 out of 5 stars First owned printer, Great owned printer.......2007-06-28

Personally, I've only used the printer for color and black and white documents and scanning. My roommate has used the picture functions and we've found that all issue with off color and brightness had more to do with the software used than the printer itself. I do need to see if cleaning the tracks (dunno if that's the right terminology) will prevent some of the occasional streaks it leaves on pictures (Reason for only 4 stars). Get the software update for a Vista computer and it runs like a dream.

    4 out of 5 stars Canon PIXMA MP810 All-in-One Photo Printer (1453B002).......2007-06-09

I bought this all in one to replace my aging HP Desk Jet 970cse printer and HP Scanjet 6200C scanner, both of which were excellent, but both of which were beginning to be pretty iffy, functionally.

It looks nice, and while quite large, closes up into a nice looking package when not being used...

Scan quality is about 7 on a scale of 10 compared to the HP unit, but it's slide scanning capability is FAR better... So while it was a little disappointing for general scan quality and high resolution detail, its still quite a nice unit for the money...

Similar situation comparing it's printing capability to the HP model it replaced... It's plain paper prints look quite nice, whether they're of printed matter, or prints of high resolution images, either from a camera or from the scanner... But the color images, for whatever reason, when printed on glossy paper are MUCH darker... I think I need to do some more homework on this, regarding performance with different glossy papers, and the capability to calibrate the printer to my flat-panel LCD display (or vice-versa).

Still, overall, the Canon is an excellent printer/scanner for the money...

It is almost worth the price just for the far better slide scanning capability, compared to the HP, even though the HP delivers better overall results (though it had begun to develop problems, which led to my replacing it - same with the HP scanner; excellent high resolution scans, but intermittent functionality had set in).

5 out of 5 stars well rounded all-in-one photo printer.......2007-05-27

I'm very happy with my purchase of the canon pixma mp810 all in one photo printer. I haven't had much time to play with it yet. I did print a few photos and I need to play with the color scheme a bit. The skin color looked a bit yellow but I think once I get a hang of the menu options that it will be easy to correct. For the price, I think it does a very excellent job. The size of the printer is big but I like having a copier/scanner/printer all in one unit. The text printing also has very high quality out put. It doesn't look blurry. I had tried the mp950 which was replaced by the mp960 but I had an error right out of the box plus the mp950 was way more expensive. I've had no problems or menu errors with the mp810. I give the canon pixma mp810 all-in-one photo printer two thumbs up!

    5 out of 5 stars Canon All-in-One Photo Printer.......2007-05-17

I am sold on Canon printers and scanners. I will never buy anything but a Canon. I had a i960 printer and a LiDE 80 scanner that I really liked, so I was nervous about changing them to something else. I decided to try the Pixma MP810 and found that it works even better then the ones I had. I'm very happy with my MP810. Good work Canon.

    5 out of 5 stars Extremely happy.......2007-05-13

The print quality is awesome. Very fast to print and scan. Had a little issue with the Epson driver on my Mac conflicting with the new Canon driver. Canon customer support was very efficient and helpful and had the problem resolved in about 5 minutes.

3 out of 5 stars Another nice Canon portable printer.......2007-06-30

I've owned 3 Canon portable printers over a span of about 17 years, a BJ-10e, a BJC-85, and now the iP90. I've always found the Canon printers to produce better quality prints and to be easier to haul about than the models from the competition. The iP90 doesn't disappoint in these 2 criteria. The iP90 does continue, however, the trend of ever-decreasing ink tank size. The BJ-10e had a monstrous black tank. The BJC-85 had an OK sized black only tank and a ridiculously tiny black tank paired with a small color tank (2 print heads that you swapped). The iP90 has the black/color combo setup but does not seem to have a black-only option. I swear that the ink tanks on the iP90 are smaller than on the BJC-85. I do not understand why we cannot have portable printers with really useful sized ink tanks ... that you can find. I live in a large city and I have found only one chain office supply store where I can get the Canon 15 (black) and 16 (color) tanks. Regardless, the iP90 is a nice printer -- but carry spare ink tanks.

5 out of 5 stars Canon Pixma Printer.......2007-06-21

I was looking for something small, sleek, portable and high quality and this is the perfect printer for that. Its very light weight and very simple and easy to use. Fold up the top cover and just put the paper/photos in. The picture quality is excellent and the photos turn out beautiful. The only complaint is some pricey extras. Print anywhere with this one, cell phone, airplane, on the go. Its very easy to use and perfect for the person who wants a small portable printer to take on the road/travel. Highly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A sturdy, compact terrific little performer!.......2007-06-12

I spent nearly a year and a half traveling weekly in my last job and after many frustrations trying to use hotel business centers for printing, found and purchased this printer. I have been thrilled with its convenience, performance and quality output. Because it folds up into a compact package and is sturdy, it travels well. Now that I'm on to a different adventure, I'm purchasing another iP90 for my personal use. It was a bonus for me to discover how well it prints photos - a feature I had no use for in the business applications I was previously using. Word of advice: because the ink cartridges are so small I'd advise keeping spares on hand.

5 out of 5 stars Great portable printer.......2007-05-31

I love the size of this printer, it is very portable and it works great.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for my needs.......2007-05-25

Uses ink quicker than I'd prefer, but fits my needs to the T! Light weight, completely portable and quick printing.

The PIXMA MP460 All-In-One Photo Printer lets you print, copy and scan photos and documents quickly and easily. View larger.

This printer makes it easy to print and share digital photos at home.

With a sleek, slanted design featuring rounded corners and a space-saving low profile, the stylish MP460 livens up any home or small business office. As more and more consumers begin to familiarize themselves with the benefits of a multi-function unit for the home, their demands go beyond just having the best technology. Ease of use and reliability have come to the forefront. The MP460 is designed to be extremely user friendly while delivering optimum results time and time again.

    High-Resolution Printing and Versatility
The MP460, sporting a high-gloss, acrylic finish, enhances productivity, maximizes home office space and adds a dash of photo fun to the workflow. With ink droplets as small as two picoliters, and resolution as high as 4800 by 1200 color dots per inch (dpi), this photo printer can print 4 x 6 inch borderless photo-lab quality prints with dry-to-the-touch precision in just about 52 seconds. It also offers print speeds up to 22 pages per minute (ppm) and color speeds of 17 ppm. There's no need to worry about complicated operating instructions to achieve these excellent results because direct printing is a snap thanks to memory card slots and PictBridge capabilities for fast and easy PC-free printing. The MP460 also delivers fast copying speeds of 22 copies per minute (cpm) in black-and-white and 17 cpm in color. In addition, it can copy a 4 x 6 inch borderless photo in approximately 57 seconds. The convenient scanner delivers 1200 by 2400 dpi (optical) and 19,200 by 19,200 dpi (interpolated) resolution, as well as a 48-bit internal color depth for vivid images.

To improve copying and scanning performance, the MP460 is equipped with Canon's state-of-the-art Z-Lid technology, which allows users to lift the scan lid approximately one-inch over a three-dimensional object for easy scanning, even with bulkier items such as personal notebooks. For added convenience, the 1.9-inch color LCD display lets you enhance images before you print for better pictures. Plus, you can print from your computer, or direct from memory cards, cameras, Bluetooth devices, and even camera phones.

    Dual Color Gamut Processing
The MP460 employs advanced copy technology to help give you amazing reproductions of original images and documents. Dual Color Gamut Processing Technology improves color accuracy by independently controlling brightness, hue, and other elements to make sure that there are minimal differences between the original and the copy. In addition, with Text and Image Separation Technology, the system can actually differentiate text from an image, making black text and fine lines darker and sharp. Now when black text appears over an image, the text on the following generations of copies can be virtually as clear as the first. These technologies plus hardware improvements in scanning and printing can help make a copy almost indistinguishable from the original.

    ChromaLife100 System
The MP460 AIO uses the Canon ChromaLife100 system, including the FINE print head technology for great photo printing. When using select genuine Canon photo papers and inks, prints can resist fading for up to 100 years when stored in an archival quality photo album. The 100-year-lifespan rivals that of many traditional film based photos, long considered by consumers to be the benchmark for image permanence. Prints produced on Canon Photo Paper Pro with ChromaLife100-compatible inks have an up to 10-year gas fastness when exposed to open air. In addition, ChromaLife100 prints, when created using genuine Canon photo paper like Photo Paper Pro or Photo Paper Plus Glossy, have up to 30-year light fastness when displayed under glass.

FINE Engineering and the Inkjet Nozzle
Launched globally by Canon in 1999, the Canon Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) advanced print head technology is one of the keys to the impressive speed and high photo quality in Canon PIXMA photo all-in-one printers. Canon FINE uses a groundbreaking high-performance multi-nozzle print engine that ejects consistent and microscopic ink droplets. The results are high-resolution photos with detail and clarity in less time.

The MP460 comes with a one-year limited warranty.

    5 out of 5 stars A Quality/Cost SUPERSTAR!!.......2007-07-03

After reading review after review of printers in my price range I finally decided on this printer. I am extremely impressed. Quality of ouput is amazing. Ease of use astonishing. It's only drawback is it is a "color ink eater", but what printer out there isn't?? I would highly recommend this printer!

4 out of 5 stars so far so good.......2007-06-11

larger printer than I thought it would be - - however smaller foot print (tapered-down) makes it fit nicely on our desk-shelf.

4 out of 5 stars Canon Pixma MP460.......2007-05-30

Good printer only complain is that it takes a few seconds to warm up before actually printing but the quality and speed is great once it gets going.

4 out of 5 stars Decent so far.......2007-05-30

I had to get a replace for my older Hewlett Packard printer. The only guidelines were it had to be an all-in-one printer (with scanner and copier), and it could not be a HP. A saw this model at an office supplies store and I'd thought I would give it a shot since I've never had problems with Canon products and the feature:price ratio of this machine was beyond most, if not all in its price range.

The printer is large. Not up to "so large I can't use it" standards, but it's definitely too big for an executive printer, or maybe one that would want it in a college dorm room, for example. For home use this printer is larger than most but not terrible. This Canon MP460 machine has a good amount of features. If you are looking for a more inexpensive and bare-bones machine, I'd suggest the Canon MP160 instead, as it is twenty dollars less but you'll have to remove the cool little screen, memory card readers, and the better print quality you get from the mid-level multifunction. The MP460 printer is simple to install, plug in the USB cord (NOT included) and the power cord and install the software from the CD. If you just want the drivers and don't want all of the software, I'd go for the "custom" install since you then get to choose what goes on your PC. For the features, you get a printer, scanner, and copier, along with the memory card reader and a little status screen. The printer is very user-friendly (now I remember why I picked Canon again) and it is easy to access all of the printer's features, although installing the printer cartridges took a bit of thinking. The print and copy quality is decent. Not lab or studio quality, but very good performance that was noticeably standout of other printers in this price range. I printed out a few images from my camera, and although I thought some of the images could have been brighter, they were above expected for a sub-$100. Copies were on the level of the photo prints, good quality prints all the time. You also get a decent scanner, although not of spectacular quality, proved better than the similar-priced HP machine. It's a little slow, and as another reviewer mentioned, it takes 20 seconds or so for start-up for the first print. You can adjust the print speed, but in sacrifice of print quality. (although in my opinion, very little) It's not too noisy, but there is a quiet mode you can put it on, in sacrifice of print speed. The paper-feed is the basic, and almost never has problems. (Unless it is the paper) Ink doesn't run out too fast, for the little ink cartridges that come with the printer lasted about 300-something pages, so I'd guess the normal ink cartridges would last about 400 to 500. The memory card reader is very useful if you have a camera. It takes a good amount of cards, like CompactFlash, Microdrive, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, SD, and SmartMedia, and many others. There is also a way to print wirelessly through Bluetooth technology, however this is an add-on and must be purchased beforehand.

All in all, if you don't mind a larger printer, and you are looking for a well-priced multifunction printer, this Canon is for you. 4 stars.

This printer makes it easy to print and share digital photos at home.

With a sleek, slanted design featuring rounded corners and a space-saving low profile, the stylish MP160 livens up any home or small business office. As more and more consumers begin to familiarize themselves with the benefits of a multi-function unit for the home, the demands go beyond just having the best technology. Ease of use and reliability have come to the forefront. The MP160 is designed to be extremely user friendly while delivering optimum results time and time again.

    Fast, Reliable Home Printing
The MP160 is a system that lets you get more done, right at home. It allows you to print beautiful, long-lasting photos, along with copies that are truer to your originals' images and text. The unique Z-Lid lets you produce clear, complete scans even of thick originals like personal notebooks. You can even print photos directly from a PictBridge compatible camera or DV camcorder -- no computer required! With home-office AIO printers becoming everyday household items and digital photography's popularity increasing by leaps and bounds, Canon has created a new generation of multi-function printers, like the MP160, that further link the photographic world to that of the home office. This multi-function unit harmonizes printing functionality and performance with imaging excellence and a sense of home decor/style, making it a great long term investment.

This four-color printer, with true-pigmented black and high intensity color inks, is ideal for printing text, web pages and photos. Affordable and cost-efficient, the MP160 offers resolution as high as 4800 by 1200 color dots per inch (dpi) and the ability to copy up to 22 pages per minute (ppm) in monochrome and 17 ppm in color. Borderless photo printing is equally fast: 4 x 6 inch photos print in less than a minute. For added convenience, the MP160 also allows for printing photos without a PC, thanks to the PictBridge port.

    Sharp, Crisp Copying
The MP160 employs advanced copy technology to help give you vivid reproductions of original images and documents.

    Quick and Easy Scanning
Thanks to the MP160's multiple capabilities, there's no need to purchase a separate scanner that will take up extra space in your office. Instead, you can rely on this compact unit to scan with a high resolution of up to 600 by 1200 dpi (optical) and 19,200 by 19,200 dpi (interpolated). With a 48-bit internal color depth and the capability to deal with documents up to 8.5 x 11.7 inches, the MP160 will give you professional results in minutes.

    ChromaLife100 Technology For Image Permanence
The MP160 uses the Canon ChromaLife100 system, including the FINE print head technology for great photo printing. When using select genuine Canon photo papers and inks, prints can resist fading for up to 100 years when stored in an archival quality photo album. The up to 100-year-lifespan rivals that of many traditional film based photos, long considered by consumers to be the benchmark for image permanence.

The MP160 comes with a one-year limited warranty.

    What's in the Box

    1 out of 5 stars Horrible Printer!.......2007-06-27

The ONLY thing that this printer does well is print documents. Printing envelopes leaves each and every envelope smudged with ink. Printed photos are as bad as I have ever seen. No more Canon printers for me!

5 out of 5 stars Very Satisfied Customer!.......2007-05-19

I just love my new Canon All-in-One! I have used all it's features and am very happy with all of them. The colors are so vivid and you can barely tell you are printing pictures from a home printer. Excellent printing quality! It is the perfect size and I like the digital read out for the page numbers and the way it animates when it is "thinking" Overall, this is a great product and I got it at a great price [...]

    5 out of 5 stars Pleasant surprise.......2007-05-16

I bought this printer for basic home use (except photographic printing). I'm pleasantly surprised at the overall package and the cost of about $70. It seems like a very high value. Text and graphic printing are quite acceptable. It is a little noisier and slower than our last printer, but then again that one was a business printer. Delivery was quite fast.

5 out of 5 stars Cannon PIXMA MP 160.......2007-04-15

I made my decision to buy this all-in-one printer based on Consumer Reports testing and they were right on. It was inexpensive and does everything I ask of it very well.

2 out of 5 stars It is a Money Drainer!.......2007-04-06

    STRENGTHS:
Canon printing and scanning quality; reliable; prints photos directly from camera; can make copies as stand-alone copier without being connected to PC.

    WEAKNESSES:
Tiny ink cartridges run out quickly and are very expensive for small capacity!; Somewhat lower scanning resolution 600 dpi is ok for documents but for high quality photo scans 2400 dpi is preferred.

    OVERVIEW:
Overall, I thought it was a great all-in-one machine, printing high quality color photos and grayscale documents. It saves space and is packed with features. So far, I printed one page in color. Colors are OK but ink runs out quickly! Therefore I will be using it mostly for scanning, printing, and copying documents in grayscale mode. You may even copy your documents without connecting it to PC. One of the cons is a bit high noise of its paper loading mechanism. For ink replacement I recommend buying original Canon ink cartridges only! Because generic ink may clog printing nozzles. Canon MP160 appeals only by its 3-in-1 function, nothing much exciting beyond that.

    PRICE PER PAGE ANALYSIS:
If you use it mostly for grayscale printing, then I don't recommend it because it is VERY EXPENSIVE to run! I counted about over 200 pages printed in grayscale mode and now both ink tanks showing low ink indicator and asking for replacement. Capacity of PG-40 blank ink is 16ml and it cost $20. I have Canon IP3000 printer, it uses BCI-3eBK black with 27ml capacity, which cost $15. Which one is a cheaper to run?! I think it is evident from comparison of capacity and price. Now let's go into a deeper analysis. Although I don't print in color, this printer uses both ink tanks, PG-40 black and CL-41 for grayscale printing. Replacement of these two original inks will cost you $45 (PG-40 $20 and CL-41 $25 ) shipped free from Amazon as any orders over $25. Now do the fair calculation. You can print maximum 300 pages in grayscale using both inks though. Now,$45x100(cents)/300(pages)= 15 cents per page. I have to cry out loud to Canon - WHAT A RIP OFF! Although I don't like HP brand, now I'm planning on buying HP 1020 monochrome laser printer. Because it is better quality and better value for grayscale printing. Even though cartridge (HP Q2612A) of HP 1020 is more expensive ($59 shipped), it will last for about 2000 pages. Divide $59 to 2000 pages, it will be about 2.95 cents a page (59x100cents/2000pp=2.95 cents)! Nothing personal against Canon, I still love Canon cameras, scanners and other printers. It rather was just fair calculation of expenses. Bring on your counterarguments in comments, if you have any.

    FOLLOW-UP:
If you open "My Printer" from setting you may select use black ink only option. Here is how:

    Open "My Printer" and click on Printer Settings;
From there, click on "Maintenance" tab and then click on "INK CARTRIDGE SETTINGS", select Black Only. You may change this option any time if you decide to print in color later. However, if you print mostly in grayscale mode I'd highly recommend black-ink-only setting.

I'm not sure if it will help saving ink if you intend to use printer for grayscale prints exclusively, like I do. Because I still think that for cleaning purposes printer will be using color ink as well. And believe me, printer cleans itself more often as it needs too! I'm suspicious if it does cleaning almost or close to every time you turn it on.
Of course that's the only way to make even a thrifty user who uses printer occasionally to buy ink over and over again.
