The Epson Stylus Color 740 produces near laser-quality text and 1,440-dpi printed color images. Epson's PerfectPicture Imaging System, a blend of features that includes tiny ink jets, smooth AccuPhoto Halftoning, and quick-drying inks helps produce rich color.

Setting up the Epson 740 was straightforward for an ink-jet printer. We followed the short setup instructions and connected the printer cable (not included) to our PC. When Windows detected the new printer, we followed the Windows New Hardware wizard and specified that our new printer driver was in the CD-ROM drive. The driver automatically installed itself and additional software as well. (When setting up, be careful not to remove the blue section of the protective tape that covers the ink cartridges.)

We tested Epson's claim that its technology produces printing "noticeably richer, deeper, and finely detailed" by printing text in a variety of fonts and sizes. Although our samples were obviously from an ink-jet printer rather than a laser printer, they were still very sharp. We also printed color digital photographs on specialty ink-jet photo paper; the resulting printouts were bright and detailed.

Ink-jet technology is a low-cost way to get sharp text and beautiful colors, and the Epson 740 implements the technology in an easy-to-use package.

Good quality, economical to run.......2006-06-19

The Epson 740 (or 740i in bondi blue) is a printer first released in 2000, so it obviously lacks the bells and whistles of many current offerings. The paper tray is vulnerable to breakage with pressure, and some might find it loud and perhaps not as fast as they'd like. All these things considered, it provides remarkably decent printing quality with that thing few think about: economy.

While toner for other printers may set you cost $10 to $25 a shot, or addict you to expensive multiple-color cartridges, you can purchase 740 cartridges online for as little as $2-4 each. Surprisingly, you can save literally hundreds of dollors a year by purchasing a 740.

Conversely, this is an older printer, and if you purchase one used, you should beware of units with missing print trays. Nonetheless, the Epson 740 is can be a solid performer if treated well, and there are many still perforrming well many years after their initial release. But its main advantage is economy of operation, which combined with workmanlike performance makes for an attractive option.

Some onliine vendors are asking $125 or so for this printer, which seems a rather extreme price. Shop carefully and you can come up with an exceptional deal.

Cheap Junk.......2006-04-26

This printer is junk! Bzzzz, Brrp, zzzzzzeeeesz . . . noises like that nearly everytime you turn it on as it charges it's cartridges. I also have an HP printer, quiet, always working, never having to make those awful and annoying charging noises.

Good Printer but Noisy.......2006-02-26

I've been using the Epson 740 since 2001. I bought it to replace the old Apple Stylewriter on a Power Mac but actually used it on my Dell computer. This printer really does a good job with text and photos but it's somewhat noisy and it seems to take a good while to "warm up" once it's turned on. Cartridges are expensive but I've experienced no mechanical problems whatsoever. The utilities that align the print heads, clean nozzles, etc. are outstanding.

Long lasting printer.......2004-12-30

I have had the Epson Stylus Color 740 printer since 2000. It prints plane text documents quickly. Color photos on the highest setting (1440 X 740) take a little long to print, but the images come out very well, especially on photo paper.

The only things I dont like about this printer are:

1.It is a noisy printer. Most of the newer printers out now are much quieter.

2. Even though the printer seems to be popular the price for an individual ink cart. is a little high at around $35.00 for Epison brand ink.

I use the cartridge in my Epson 860 for printing basically photos. So far I have not had any of my pictures fade or turn different colors since I have been using the ink and printer for about a year. If you don't use photo glossy paper however, the ink will run dry sooner. And don't forget Epson fans, always turn on your printer at least once a week (you don't have to print anything) in order to keep the ink jets from clogging.

Good ink for up to 1440 DPI. Provides very nice color photo results at a fairly economical cost. Could be slightly better in the instructions (only remove the yellow tape on the top before installing). All in all, good ink for the money that works quite well on a wide variety of papers.

Through the years of owning printers,I've had the pleasure of using Top Brand name printers,HP,LEXMARK,EPSON. Because I run alot of graphic software,and print from my camcorder to make stills of my Family.Nothing is close to the photo print quality you get from Epson and their ink.When I take a scan and copy the picture with 1200 dpi,on photo paper(also Epson)you cannot tell them apart. I have given away my HP and Lexmark printers and Hands down I'm sticking with EPSON. Thanks for a perfect product.
