The Z25 is one of those printers whose price is lower than those of its replacement ink cartridges, so it's a real bargain only for those who print infrequently. The driver is well-designed and offers useful information, such as ink level and automatic detection of cartridge replacement. It also speaks to you with progress and error messages.

In our tests, without a black cartridge, black text came out looking dark brown, rather than truly black, and because the printer must lay down all three colours, the print speed was low. A standard five-page text document took nearly 5 minutes to print, giving the Z25L a real-world print speed of just over 1 page per minute (ppm), far less than the rated 9 ppm black and 6 ppm color. It's best to invest in the second cartridge.

A 3-by-5-inch photo came out surprisingly well. Although we saw some dithering in areas of steady tone, the colors were bright, if not completely accurate. The 1,200 x 1,200 dpi resolution is high enough for most needs but is realized only on premium photo papers. The print time, at just over 3 minutes, is pretty good, particularly for a printer in this price range.

The Z25L comes with a one-year exchange warranty, during which time Lexmark will swap out any faulty device. It has a heavy duty cycle of up to 2,000 pages per month and is comparatively quiet in operation. Overall, the Lexmark Z25 represents very good value for money. --Simon Williams

I concur with the previous complaints with efficiency and cost of cartridges. However, my dislike for this printer is associated with the jamming that occurs when printing a larger print file. As a previous evaluation noted, the printer jams and you end up wasting lots of paper and ink re-printing. The printer worked fine for the first few months. As the usage increases the paper feed begins to have problems with feeding paper that is aligned properly, and jams when the paper is eskew because the feeder mechanism pulls paper faster on the right than on the left, leaving a printed page crooked, if not jammed before completion.

I would not recommend this printer unless you are into frustrating yourself. So long, Lexmark.

The printer itself for the price prints ok.My biggest beef with the z25 is Ink Cartridges.They run out in no time,and i mostly print out text based pages.Makes me miss my old hp deskjet 400,and that ani't sayin much.

Prints well for the first couple of runs. Cartridge runs out quickly. Cartridge build is nothing more than a foam sponge inside - very poor design.

I was sucked in by the low price of the printer but the ink cartridges will have you paying through the nose (the editorial review already mentioned this). The low productivity per ink cartridge will have you buying cartridges very often, for me it was every three or four months and with the total cost for two cartridges being around $90 without no generic cartridges available the printer was definitely not worth it.
Actually, the cartridges can be refilled but there are other problems with that.

The printing quality is okay but with the market for printers so large there is no reason to settle for this. Now I'm looking for a new printer and I am definitely not buying a Lexmark again.

I must say I'm not a stickler for print quality and print speed, so I didn't notice that the blacks came out dark brown, or that printing a full-page photograph took more time than it should. What I have noticed is that this printer will never feed more than one sheet of paper without jamming. That is to say, it might get the first page through alright, but when it goes for the second sheet, it feeds the right side of the sheet too quickly, starts printing at an angle, which crumples the paper, and jams the machine. In, fact, I wouldn't even reccommend leaving paper in the tray. Feed it manually, always.
I also have to say that the software (at least that which came with the Brazilian installation package) is irritating to the point of never wanting to print again. "Printing is starting" "Please feed paper" Blablabla, I'm not blind, you don't have to speak to me, just beep and that's enough. I take it back. No stars! This printer is going to printer hell when it dies, along with all its Z25 brethren. Avoid it like the plague.

I cannot BELIEVE that they didn't include a printer cable in the box with this "printer." The box and documentation were very misleading about this slap to the consumer's face. I am about to turn around and return it and pick up the HP I should have bought in the first place. Lexmark has ruined their reputation with me forever.

The price is good, but what they don't tell you when you buy this printer is that you will need 1 of the 2 ink cartridges in about a month with just casual use. Oh yea, uh, the 2 cartridges are 50 bucks.
Don't waste your time or money unless you're using it as a disposable printer.

This is my second Lexmark. I would never buy another. I only bought this second one because it was being sold at a fundraiser for my sister-in-law's chorus. It was brand new. First thing is that Consumer Reports wrote that the Lexmark ink is the most expensive of all the printer mfgrs.

I'm printing a Christmas newsletter on it. Gripe 1: The side with 6 pictures takes six minutes to print. Gripe 2: The black ink was half used after 40 pages! (This poor speed and ink performance is nowhere close to the specs Lexmark provides.) Gripe 3: The worse thing is that just like with my old Lexmark, the feed mechanism grabs unevenly, and the paper gets jammed. Or it doesn't grab at all. Gripe 4: After a major jam, it smeared ink on the backs of the next 10 pages, wasting lots of expensive paper and ink before I noticed it.

I have to babysit this thing. I hate it!

simple enough
I used a refill kit which comes with a small hand drill, rubber stopper hyperdermic and two bottles of ink.
Drill into the top (I did it between the raised part of the cartridge) once you break through inject into the foam with the hyperdermic needle put in the rubber stopper. then insert cartridge in printer lie to the software say it is a new cartridge and off you go. Colour is a little harder i believe because there are 3 ink wells to find. it is a great little printer and fairly economical once you know how to refill :-)

I bought this printer almost a year ago. I don't need to print anything heavy, just papers for college or maybe a picture for my son to color. I must say that I have had no problems. The paper feeds fine and has never jammed on me. My papers come out beautifully. Maybe I just got a good one but it's fine for me. No, it doesen't come with a black cartridge just color and to print in black you want a black one but ink is just expensive from what I have seen. I haven't had any problems finding ink. I bought it at Best Buy and they carry ink as well as Circuit City and many online stores. Not sure I would suggest this for heavy duty work but for light home use it seems to be fine. I am on a tight budget as a single mom who works and goes to school and it's great for my family. Hope this helps in your purchase.

    this ink is of really poor quality... my printer wont print without a line through the text and it wont print certain colors... green prints yellow, blue prints pink, etc etc... total waste of money... spend the extra money to get a real cartridge...

    The ink quality was low and failed to print without making a line through the print. Even when the printer was prompted to use the best quality printing you could still barely read the print. Very disappointed.
