Over the years, I have used no other but only HPs to do all my printings and relied heavily on their "layered technology" printers. The 990CSE is my latest printer and I must admit that the print results are still as good as what an HP printer should be however, the biggest drawback about this particular model was indeed as we all know by now is the design mechanism. I do encounter a few paper jam now and then and can relate to the previous reviewers about envelopes jamming up when it is printed and ready to feed out...indeed this is the most frustrating part. This unit will not get 5 stars because of its design mechanics.

I've used an HP DeskJet 990CSE as my main home office printer for over a year now. Print quality has been consistently good and I have no complaints. It doesn't print color transparencies particularly well, but I've never really expected it to, preferring, instead, to use a color laser for that stuff. I don't use the much-maligned duplexer. However, the single envelope feeder is extremely temperamental and jams frequently. I'd estimate that for every ten envelopes that I print, 3-4 jam, and some jams necessitate my opening the lid and prying the mangled envelope out. Other than the envelope path, I'm generally pleased with this printer.

After reading all of the bad reviews on here about this printer, I felt it necessary to voice my opinion, although I am not one to write reviews. I have had this printer since Dec. 2000 when it was top of the line from Dell. I have loved it and wouldn't trade it for the world. It does print slower, but I can always be guaranteed a perfect print everytime. I have printed many different size envelopes, papers and labels and all have come out perfect. I have not had to change the ink cartridges very often (I change about every 6 months) and I do alot of b/w copying. This printer is very easy to setup, use, calibrate, clean, monitor ink levels, etc. I have never had a problem.

The driver software gives you two options to deal with this - print everything at about 90% scale to squeeze the content into the printable space, or re-sort the pages allowing the SW to move the page breaks. Neither is appealing, so I found that I reverted to manual duplex mode - taking the paper out and reversing itself myself.
The biggest problem I have with the printer is frequent paper jams. Even when using HP brand multipurpose paper, I find that the printer jams about 25% of the time. In the quest for speed, the paper load mechanism is just too fast, pulling in many sheets of paper instead of just one.

This cartridge is ok as long as nothing you print with it ever comes into contact with water or moisture. I have a 385 Photo printer and even after the photos are long dried, the slightest moisture or water ruins the picture instantly. Not good HP. Time to re-engineer this cartridge with smudge/water-proof ink like others have done.

I have an HP Photo Deskjet which uses this cartridge. It is fast, prints nice photos as well as cards, banners, etc., and lasts longer than other cartridges I have used with other printers.
* No clogging problems.
* I haven't had any smearing.
* Easy to install.
* Refill kits are available.

It is a good cartridge...and the best price I have found is on Amazon.

It can print black text at up to 17 ppm and blazes through color documents at 13 ppm, with up to 2,400 x 1,200 dpi resolution on photo paper. The 990c features infrared printing from PDAs, notebook computers, and other mobile devices. Plus, using the 990c with a mobile device couldn't be easier--just point and print.

      As an advanced amateur photograper I use the 990cse to print out my scanned photos. The results are top quality. I purchased the 990cse in early January and have used it nearly everyday running mostly HP High Quality Gloss Photopaper. I have also used the 2 sided copy and have printed out a 200 page document with ease. My OS is MS Windows XP Home and the interface is flawless. I have to admit I have not put other brand named printers through their paces to compare and some fellow Nikon photographers like the Epson printers equally well. But for me, unless the 99cse disappoints me down the road, I am sold on its quality.

      The print quality of this unit is great. However, the duplex unit (two-sided printing module) on this printer has caused me nothing but problems. It worked a few times but now it jams almost every time I try to use it. Followed HP support advice for several frustrating hours to no avail. Not recommended.

      I purchased this printer Dec 29, 2000. It has been used virtually every day since then. I absolutly love the quality and speed. The automatic 2-sided printing saves me tons of paper. The photos that I print on photo paper are second to none. I have several of them framed and hanging in my home. For general use, like printing from the internet or making trip maps, even a lot of work stuff, (I'm in the military) I print using draft mode. It is still pretty darn't good quality and amazingly fast. If the quality really needs to be good, just bump up the print quality setting. The speed will decrease of course, but that makes sense. A tip to try though, if you use the same kind of paper most of the time (I use H.P. bright white) is you can select that paper setting in the setup menu. That way the automatic paper sensor is disabled. Time is saved because the printer doesn't have to anaylize what type of paper it is going to be printing on, it just starts printing. Of course I set it back to automatic when I'm done. I never know what the wife is going to be printing. She just loads whatever she's working on and lets the printer figure it out! All in all, I couldn't be happier. I would definantly buy it again. The main complaints that I have read on this site are 1. use with Mac and 2. use with heavy stock. 1. I really don't know what to tell you Mac users. Ask another Mac user and see if they have the same problems. 2. The heavy stock users, read the specs before you buy this or any printer. This one plainly states not to use anything heavier than 24lb. Don't blame the printer because you can't read.

      I am a professional, concerned with technological R&D, my focus being photorealistic imagery...I subcontract to publication companies to establish / maintain / upgrade their system environments.
      I have found that whle the HP 990cse is somewhat realiable in successfully outputting a high quality print - our track record shows 76% of all attempted prints hit their highest posible mark, there are also many failures and trials and service prints which use up alot of expensive consumables, but when you get the successful print in your hand, it satisfies the most seasoned of photojournalists for photorealism.
      The problem with this expense is that it is multiplied in the MAC world with no foreseeable solution in place: I personally have printed over 250 trials, documented, using the same images, running the same software (adobe photoshop 6.+, quark, as well as a few smaller less known image and printing packages). HP offers no solutions by only providing wild good chase type suggestions to the 'known to them' problem of grainy and pixellated prints...I must admit I like the version of proprietary software for the Mac better that comes bundled with the HP 990 cse, but MAC users will never match the quality of a PC print using the same image and exact same printer, unless HP is keeping a secret from us on how to print a quality print in the MAC environment - luckily I have a solution of my own, run both operating systems with a network between them and some expensive communication software so i can work on a MAC and print from a PC, but that might not be reachable by your average user....HP if you are listening:do not claim a product is professional if it is not useful to professionals in known standard environments to professionals, especially if you cannot support or resolve known issues - I do not think that Adobe or Quark or MacIntosh are responsible to provide fixes for your printers, I think it should be the other way around.       This was our third HP DeskJet printer for home use in 10 years. The first two lasted a total of 9.5 years but the 990cse has only lasted 5 months. The 990cse worked flawlessly for a couple of months then it began having problems with the first sheet in every print job. After sensing the paper, there would be a loud grinding/clunk and the print head would jamb to one side. Once the initial sheet was cleared, all subsequent sheets would be fine. After trying new ink cartridges, new paper, new drivers the problem persisted. I was about ready to take it back for repairs when the printer died altogether. When the 990cse was working, the print quality and speed were fantastic. The duplex unit, which I thought would be problematic, worked great. It could have been a great printer. I will return it for replacement and hopefully my next 990cse is not built on a Monday.
