An affordable monochrome laser printer, the ML-1740 from Samsung is designed for home and small business use and comes with some attractive features. With a 600 x 600 dpi print resolution, text is easy to read, while a 17 ppm print speed delivers jobs quickly, when you need them.

A 250-page paper input tray is accompanied by a single-sheet manual bypass feeder and a 50-page output tray. The printer accepts plain paper, envelopes, labels, and transparency media, as well as media weights ranging from 16 to 24 lbs bond via the tray and 16 to 43 lbs bond via the manual feeder. The starter toner cartridge has an average life of about 1,000 pages (3,000 pages for the replacement cartridge), while a toner-save mode can reduce toner consumption by up to 40%.

USB and parallel ports allow you to easily connect the ML-1740 to your host computer. The 66 MHz processor combines with 8 MB of memory to handle small to medium size print loads, and the 15,000-page maximum monthly duty cycle provides reliability for home and office applications. Compatible with PC and Linux operating platforms, the ML-1740 also comes backed with a one-year limited warranty on parts and labor.

Dirty little secret--manufacturers sell printers in order to make money on ink. Ever wonder why they give away free printers with computer packages?

I bought this printer for home business use. I print approximately 50 pages per day, but have printed several hundred a day using this printer. Use the toner save option. You can get close to 2000 copies with one cartridge. You can buy this printer for the price of a decent inkjet, and you will be able to print more for less, with better quality. For toner, if you are careful, you can get the refills, or just buy a remanufacturer one (they refill an old cartridge and resell it) online for about $35. Spill just a little toner, and you'll see the wisdom of this!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best "Bang for your Buck" Lasers Out There..........2006-12-19

I received this little guy as a gift two years ago. To my surprise, it's still chuggin! I use it strictly for home use, however, I'm in school - so I print a TON of papers (I'm talkin' 25-50 page papers - so it gets a LOT of use). It takes about 30 seconds to print its first page - that's true - but I did a test against my HP v40 inkjet printer and the first page STILL comes out quicker on the Sammy (I just tested with a B&W 1-page Word document). Of course, when you're printing 25-50 pages, that 30-second wait for the first page MORE than makes up for itself in the long run.

The best part about this printer (at least for me) is that the toner seems to last a REALLY long time. The whole time I've had the printer, I've only had to change the toner twice. Sure, its $80, but I'm getting a whole YEAR out of it! That's just amazing! Compared to shelling out at least $90/year to replace the cartridges out of the HP, I'd have to say the Samsung is a better value (especially considering the v40 doesn't get as much use - that's one downfall to inkjet printers - even if you don't use them, you still have to replace the cartridges because they dry up).

I think this guy was about $60-70 when I got it and its incredible that it hasn't given me a single problem (I print papers, labels, on envelopes, you name it, it does it - flawlessly). Set up was a breeze (I don't think I even used the included CD with Win XP SP2) and it seems to just work. I like it when things work out like that. I definitely recommend this printer for home use.

This is a great little printer, while it lasts. I've owned both the ML1740 and the earlier ML1710 and both failed shortly after the one year manufacturer warranty expired. If you want a printer for a year, this one is great - otherwise, I would put your dollars somewhere else.

The errors that each one had were different, incidentally.

This printer is perhaps the most unreliable printer I've used! It intermittently print error messages with no rhyme nor reason which costs my money. I really wanted to use this laser printer to print prepaid mailing labels so that they won't smear if they get wet. I only get 2 tries to print the label correctly and if the printer doesn't cooperate, which was quite often, I have to send a claim in, which is very inconvenient, not to mention wasting label material.
