Second Hand News.......2003-02-06

My wife works as an administrator for a local church. She had problems with her first HP Lazer Jet 1100 and the HP company replaced it immediately under warranty for which she was very pleased. The replacement unit started jamming as paper would run low. It would pull 4 to 6 sheets in at a time. She thought purhaps the paper was damp and changed to another brand, but the machine still jammed while using fresh, top of the line paper products. In all fairness, when the unit did not jam, it printed beautifully and has printed to date, 38,959 copies. But in doing so, it has been very frustrating. Enough to make the Preacher cuss! My wife has retired this model and the church has purchased a new HP Office Jet D145 printer,copier, scanner and fax combination that works great. Although, the new printer is not a Laser Jet and it appears to use ink cartridges like a luxury SUV goes through gas, it is a "Blessing" that HP has discontinued the problematic 1100 model. It is our opinion that HP offers the best products and service. Thank you.

Great For Home/Small Office Use.......2002-08-28

HP's LaserJet 1100a offers the convenience of being a multipurpose printer/copier/scanner. Unlike many of "All-In-One's" the 1100a actually is a LaserJet (meaning it's fast and uses toner) instead of being a glorified multi-function InkJet (meaning slow as heck).

Home/small office users should enjoy the convenience of the 1100a's copying ability. If you need to make large volume copies this product may be a pain as the speed is not there (after it's not a REAL copy machine) so you may still want to visit Kinko's but if your copying requirements are small, this machine can put out copies fast enough. Another good plus on this product is that it can make copies even while the computer is off. It is independent of the computer.

As far as scanning goes, this product is ideal if you are scanning pages. It does not have a flatbed, so I personally would not trust this product with pictures but for OCR functions this is perfectly fine.

In all, if your home/office printing requirements are strictly for black-white documents this product is a fine solution for your needs. It's fast, it prints in good quality, plus it doubles as both a copier and a printer. It's done the job for me very well!!!

I have seen two or three of this model jam on almost every document larger than 10 pages. Mine finally jammed itself into the repair shop.

Great Little Printer/Scanner/Copier.......2000-11-25

I have one of these at work in a small office and it is a real workhorse! It seems to go forever on an ink cartridge. I especially like the copier capability - many times they turn out looking better than the original. It very rarely jams for me. I can run up to 99 copies of an original which makes it great if you can't afford a "real copier". The scanner is a little limited. Since it has to feed through it really isn't good for pictures or paper other than regular 8x11 sheets, but the printer and copier capabilities make it a great product even with this limitation. I would highly recommend it.

Problem with jams, but the "A (all-in-1)" features score.......2000-06-12

This is a very solid basic laser printer. It understands all document formats that I've ever sent it and has provided sharp quality output now for 5,500 pages (or so my printer test page tells me). Though it does seem to jam more often then my NEC Superscript 870 or my old HP 6L. Jams happen when paper is running low - if there are 5-10 sheets left in the paper tray/slot, it will often try to feed them all. The instruction manual says to always remove all paper when reloading with more - this definitely helps, but doesn't address when the printer is running low... which is often because the paper tray/slot only holds about 100 pages. So I end up having to constantly glance over before I print to see if it is running low on paper - if so, take all the remaining sheets out, stack nicely with new sheets, and stick back in. A little bit of a pain.

Note: if you do get a jam, you can just grabbing and pulling the offending sheets out. Occasionally this won't work (I had the mother of all jams two weeks ago, when the 1100 feed 15 sheets at once). In these situations, open the front cover, take out the toner cartridge, and locate the binder/roller pressure bar - it is secured by two large silver head screws on the left and right inside the front cover. Slightly loosen both screws to give yourself more slack, pull out jammed sheets, tighten screws.

Even with all the jams, I still think this is a great product because of the additional functionality offered by the scanner/copier under the "all-in-1" package, which the "A" in the product name designates. On top of the regular 1100, HP piggy backs a scanner attachment (it hangs on two tabs, and the electronic connector bayonette mounts on the underside). With this HP bundles a basic image and optical character recognition (OCR) application. The OCR application is passable, but if you plan on doing any serious OCR (more than a few pages a month), get a dedicated scanner with Omnipage. Also before getting a digital camera, I used the scanner to share photos with friends - scan then email (though the scanner is only gray-scale).

The real winner is the "copier" function. To copy, the scanner reads the original and the laser printer pumps out the copy. It's fantastic having the ability to copy at home. Friend wants a copy of that receipe? Want a copy before mailing something? No problem. The 1100Ase will copy all sizes of documents, as long as it will feed through the scanning slot - if the original is longer than 11 inches, the 1100Ase will just run it off on more than one sheet. It all takes just 15 seconds or less, since the printer warms up quickly, and your computer does not need to be on. Beautiful!
