Automatic e-mail printing, intelligent sleep mode, and secure job reprint are all standard features that can be operated from the intuitive three-button interface. Print clarity reaches an impressive 2,400 x 600 dpi, and the included toner cartridge has an expected lifetime of 6,500 pages. The lower paper tray can handle up to 250 sheets of letter or legal paper, while executive paper sizes, envelopes, transparencies, and labels can be printed from the upper tray. A third paper tray may be added, and the standard 24 MB of memory is expandable up to 136 MB.

Great machine with PC. Very limited functionality with Mac........2007-07-03

I bought this machine because I wanted a multifunction laser that worked with both PC and mac for my home office. With my XP machine, all of the bells and whistles work. I can scan directly to PDF in a couple of seconds. I love it.

For a Mac, however, the only functionality is laser printer. No scanner, no scan to pdf, no fax from computer. MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT. Otherwise this thing would get 5 stars.

Excellent little AIO device - compact and fast.......2007-07-01

I picked this up for the front desk at my wife's orthodontic practice, where space is severely restricted. The essential requirements were: a flatbed scanner (not sheet-fed), ADF, good laser printing speed and quality, and all in as small a package as possible. This unit delivers beautifully on all fronts, and delivers some very nice bonuses to boot, such as automatic duplexing (including printing from the computer and 2-1 copying, but not 2-2 copying). The only thing missing that would have been nice is an Ethernet interface, but this is readily solved with printer sharing (not for scanning over the network, but you can send faxes this way).

Plus:

* Very fast time to first page, even from sleep mode. The warm up time is virtually zero, unlike my Dell 1600n, which seems to take forever to get cranked up (the Dell does, however, have a slightly faster ADF and network attachment).

* Very compact - probably as small as you can get for a device with this specific feature set. NOTE: for legal paper output, the print tray winds up protruding significantly from the normal footprint; again, not something most people will use, and it's nice that you have the option without purchasing an extra paper tray.

* Nice quality for text and simple graphics printing. Not as good for complex greyscale, but that's not what it's used for.

* Scans to PDF via the standalone control application

* Flexible copy options

* Automatic duplexing printer (not scanner)

* Very competent fax

* Easy-to-understand front panel buttons (e.g., much more intuitive and functional that the Dell 1600n I have for comparison)

So-So:

* Paper handling is fine, but the manual feed entrance is placed directly on top of the paper tray cover, making it somewhat hard to access and adjust, and not well-suited for placement below desk level (we have ours under the desk, which makes manual feed setup a pain).

* Some of the less-used setup options, especially for the fax, can only be done at the front panel, not from the PC control panel, which would be much easier and faster to use.

* The ADF paper support sticks up at a 45-degree angle, making the overall height of the unit more than in needs to be, especially since it's so compact overall. An ADF design that feeds paper from closer to horizontal would have been nice.

* Somewhat small toner capacity, but not really a liability for use in an office that minimizes paper production. Usually, small toner capacity is associated with slow speed, which is not the case here.

Minus:

* Really nothing so far. Time will tell as to durability.

Almost perfect........2007-06-30

Unit does everything stated in the description without any problem. I do miss the fact that when sending and receiving faxes it does not tell you what it is doing in the display screen like, 'Dialing' 'connecting' or 'receiving' or 'successful'like my old Brother standalone fax did.
Not even with using the system monitor button. However, the processing light does flash and you can set it for a report to print out at the end that will tell you if it was sucessful at whatever it was doing.
Unit is about 3 weeks old.

Great Printer at a good price........2007-06-30

For a MFP at this cost Im surprised. Its very small to fit easily on your desk, its quite, and fires right up to print. Im a print focal at my job and we use commercial grade Lexmark devices. But as for this canon product they have done a great job at a good price. The duplexing feature is a very nice plus. To get the duplexing feature to work, since most people dont understand how, is simple. Right click on the printer (in printers and faxes) and go into preferences and change your profile option to 2 sided. Its just that easy. It saves on paper for my wife whose a realator and burns alot of it. Thanks canon.

Excellent Product.......2007-06-27

I bought this unit 2 month ago, and I have to admit, this is my great!!!
We have to use in our network at office, and as soon as you sent some document to print, it does very fast. The copy cuality is very good. The fax, just Excellent. More, the Saving mode is great because even if you send something to print, it stand in this mode and print the document!!
And as a gift, you can copy on duplex or just collate them.
Just, the best machine for low/medium use.
