Customer Reviews:
Lasted about 18 months for us........2007-05-27
I rather like this multifunction, and it prints, scans, and copies well. It does however chew up ink cartridges very quickly relative to our previous HP printer, and you cannot recycle/refill them. Ink costs will likely surprise you.
Another problem is poor software design. For example, when a color cartridge is low, you have to click a warning dialog even when printing a black and white document. Also, the default setting was to print documents in *reverse* order for some reason. It also won't let you print a document when one of the five ink tanks is deemed empty.
After about 16-18 months of average home use, it developed a problem where under the #5 cartridge a thick vertical black line came out, on the *reverse* side of the paper, bleeding through to the front. We tried replacing cartridges several times, then spent a couple of weeks fruitlessly interacting with their email support line (who seemed quite unable to perform support). We talked to a guy at Fry's Electronics about it, another Canon owner, who was fairly convinced it was a defective print head. We ordered one for $48.00, and of course it was not the problem. We've now got a gorgeous piece of junk on our hands, plus two print heads and, perhaps $200 of spare ink cartridges, too many of which were opened to try and solve the problem.
So in summary, I loved the mechanical design and functionality, tolerated the software quirks, and finally became disgusted with the reliability and customer support.
OK, but unnecessarily complex.......2007-05-24
This device performs ok, but it is unnecessarily complex to operate. When coping it inexplicably often reset itself to an odd paper size and type, and you must struggle through the menu to set it to the 8.5 by 11 plain paper size most of us usually use. It has two paper feeds and if you don't need to keep two types of paper stored in the machine, this is just another setting to get wrong when printing. I would look for a simpler user interface if I was buying again.
Works well.......2007-05-07
This products works as advertised. It scans and prints well. The software works, the interface is clear, you don't have to fool around trying to figure it out. Everything works just the way you would expect it to.
Great product!
Extremely reliable printer.......2007-04-24
This has been a very long lasting, reliable printer for me. I use it for my business and demand a lot of it, and it has kept up with my needs admirably. It is fast, the print quality is good, and the separate ink tanks save money. My only complaint is that when I want to copy something, it defaults to a smaller size than the 8 1/2 x 11 that I usually need. I've had other Canon printers that have had problems with the feed system after a while, but after a year of heavy use have not had any problems with this one.
CANNON CHARGES $100 FOR REPLACEMENT INKS.......2007-04-02
I would never buy this printer again... It is great until you run out of Ink then you can only use Cannon the replacing of the Chip only workls sometime to use other brand inks. It was not conservative on ink at all and now they want $100 for replacement inks. Probably will never buy another Cannon product again

Advanced All-In-One Performance (Refurbished)
A one stop Print-Copy-Scan center.
With the versatile PIXMA MP500 Photo All-In-One on your desktop, you'll ask yourself how you ever got along without it. This amazing machine delivers an impressive resolution of up to 9600 x 2400 color dpi, for remarkable detail and clarity. How does it do it? Canon Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) uses a next-generation 1,856-nozzle print head that ejects precise, consistent droplets as small as 1 picoliter. More nozzles + smaller droplets = smoother, virtually grain-free images. Further, our ContrastPLUS 5-color ink system - four dye-based inks and a pigment-based black ink - produces true-life photos with a wide color palette, along with laser-quality text. You won't have to wait long to see your results; a beautiful photo lab quality 4"x 6" borderless photo takes approximately 51 seconds.
Advanced performance doesn't stop there. AE (Auto Exposure) Copy feature automatically optimizes reproduction quality based on the type of original you're duplicating. When scanning photos or graphics, you'll see highquality 1200-dpi reproduction with vibrant 48-bit color depth. Plus, advanced paper handling provides you with several smart options. The dual paper path allows you to keep photo paper stored in one tray and plain paper in the other - so you can print photos or documents without having to switch paper. You can even print 2 sided reports, saving paper.
Long-lasting photos with smart individual ink tanks.
The Canon ChromaLife100 system combines the PIXMA MP500 Photo All-In-One's FINE print head technology and newly developed inks with select Canon photo papers, with results rivaling that of many conventional photos. And with the new smart LED ink tanks, your LED lamp flashes when ink is running low, and flashes even faster when nearing empty. This item is sold and comes as a refurbished product.

Customer Reviews:
Buy It!.......2007-02-04
I have owned many printers and scanners over the years and this one (for the price) beats all the others, hands down!
Some features to consider about this all-in-one:
- Four color printing with individual color ink cartriges (black, magenta, cyan, yellow)
- Two separate paper feed sources, so you can keep letter & legal in the printer at the same time and switch between them just by pressing a button
- Two-page printing automatically prints on both sides of paper
- VERY EASY to replace ink cartriges
- Scans to image or Acrobat file format
- Prints to paper edge for borderless photo printing
- Outstanding photo quality. This was one of the 'top picks' by several reviewing organizations for an all-in-one printer, regardless of price
This is the first printer that I have been absolutely happy with. You will not regret buying this printer.
wow!.......2006-08-21
I had decided to replace my Dell printer since it seemed to have more issues than not, as well as the fact that I went through ink (which wasn't cheap) like there was no tomorrow. I researched the web seeking a decent printer for a decent price that would be more economical in terms of ink.
Alas, this printer popped up time and again.
I'm happy it did! This printer has all the bells and whistles, is easy to use, affordable, does a great job whether printing documents or photos, and is much more efficient at its use of ink!
The best printer I have ever owned.......2006-08-03
I bought this printer from a local retail store. Due to the cheap price, I assumed that it would have average print quality, etc. You get what you pay for, right?
Wrong!
*The quality of printed photos is amazing, assuming that you are using good quality paper.
*It is easy to setup and operate
*It has a cool little lcd screen that allows you to navigate through the printer settings and even preview pics that you want to print.
*You can plug your camera's memory card directly into the printer for easy access.
*It comes with some cool editing software, etc.
*It just looks so sleek and stylish.
...the list goes on and on. It's a great buy, especially if you get a good price on it. I told my dad about this printer and he wanted to try one out for size. He bought one for himself and uses it at his office. He has not had any problems either.
The other user, who posted a comment, must have gotten a lemon. Either that, or it was some type of user error (no offense intended)
Made by the second little pig.......2006-08-02
I bought this printer in April after reading many positive reviews. It was easy to set up--even for a "technophobe" like me. I managed to get it to execute all its functions (text printing, photo printing, scanning and copying) without calling one of my children for help. Like any inkjet printer, it seems like I had to replenish the ink supply all too soon--but that goes with the territory.
Then, the other day, I tried to print something off the web and up comes this message on my computer screen, "Service error 6B10" I turned off the unit and disconnected the power cord as suggested by the manual but I kept getting that message. Then I called tech support (also suggested by the manual). After a mercifully short hold time of a minute or two, a pleasant technician had me verify that there was no paper jam and then told me that my unit would need servicing.
Since it was still under warranty, I could have Cannon ship me a refurbished model and I could ship them back my printer or I could take it to a computer repair shop and have them fix it at Cannon's expense. I chose the second option.
These printers have been out for less than a year and already Canon has a supply that have had to be "refurbished." This makes me think that this model has some real design flaws or, as I said to the tech support person, it's junk.
