The 4215 from HP helps you to save on valuable space by combining faxing, scanning, printing, and copying functions into one convenient unit. This full color multifunction is designed for home and small office use and features an inkjet printer with up to 1,200 x 1,200 dpi resolution (up to 4,800 x 1,200 dpi optimized color) and print speeds of up to 17 ppm for black and up to 12 ppm for color (at lower resolutions; actual speeds will vary).

An 8 MB memory is standard as well as a 20-page automatic document feeder. The paper input tray has an input capacity of up to 100 sheets, and supports a variety of paper types and sizes, including paper (plain, inkjet, photo), envelopes, transparencies, labels, cards, iron-on transfers, letter, legal, executive, and more.

The color scanner has a 36-bit color depth and a hardware resolution of up to 600 x 1,200 dpi, resulting in accurate, true-to-life scans perfect for a wide variety of applications. The included software bundle helps you to get the best prints and scans possible, and includes HP Director, HP Photo Gallery, HP Image Editor, and Readiris OCR.

Access features and common tasks through the easy-to-navigate HP Director software. The copier has print speeds of up to 17 ppm for black and up to 12 ppm for color, with resolutions as high as 2,400 x 1,200 dpi. You can make up to 100 copies at a time, saving you time and hassle, while a zoom function allows you to reduce or enlarge copies from 25% to 200%.

The fax machine is capable of full-color faxing and has a fast 3-second per page transmission time. A transmission memory of up to 100 pages lets submit large jobs, while a fax broadcast feature lets you send a single fax to 50 separate locations. The fax also features a junk fax barrier, remote retrieval, and auto-redial.

The 4215 conveniently connects via USB and has a small 16.4-by-8-inch footprint. It is compatible with PC and Mac operating platforms and also comes backed by a one-year limited warranty.

Okay for occasional use, but............2007-07-04

I purchased this all in one printer based on the positive reviews that I read on this site and others. I was looking for a small, inexpensive, yet effective all in one machine for mostly home office uses. I've used it for copying, scanning, faxing, and printing. I've found that the printer is extremely slow. EXTREMELY. I've used it to print from both a Mac and PC (running Vista) only to find that it took hours to print larger documents. It also seemed to use quite a bit of ink for a not so big text print job. So, be sure to have ink cartridges on the ready. It handled my copying and scanning jobs fairly well, so if you're primarily buying it for one of those uses it would probably be okay. I keep getting error message about a "cartridge" whenever I send faxes. I'm usually able to get them to go through, but it sometimes requires more babysitting than I would like when trying to send faxes. This unit is probably sufficient for occasional use, but anything close to moderate or more will stress both you and the machine.

I've had this for several months now and can't believe how great it is. The fax is awesome and soooo easy to use. I hooked it up in less than 5 minutes and haven't had one problem with it so far.

Vista users beware!!.......2007-06-20

I even called HP and specifically asked them before I ordered this item if it was compatible with Vista. They put me on hold to "check for sure" and came back to tell me it was. Guess what? Nope... won't work! So now I have to go through the hassle of returning, fighting to get shipping reimbursed, etc. Don't do it!

I'm very satisfied with the OfficeJet 4315. I bought it solely for the fax and copier features (and don't even have it connected to my computer). I liked the price and I'm happy with the fax and copier functions and quality. I found the menus easy to navigate and the features are exactly what I was looking for in this type of device. Consider me a satisfied owner!

So far, so good!.......2007-05-30

I've had this product for about a month now, and it out performs my old Lexmark printer by far! Right now I only copy and print, but the pages come out beautifully, and it's such a money saver you can use the cartridges for all four functions. Not to mention the cartridges are the most reasonably priced on the market. If you're thinking of buying this item, you will not go wrong!

Perfect scanner (not printer) for academics who use GNU/Linux.......2007-05-18

I've actually never used the printing function of this thing (gave the starter cartridge away). I only use the scanner to scan pages of research I write almost everyday. This puppy is AWESOME! HP made a mistake when they released an ADF scanner for just $100 (they could have easily charged a lot more). I scan pages to PGM format (with scanimage from xsane) and convert them to DJVU format (with c44), which saves a lot of space. I never have to worry about losing pages of work, and now they're a lot easier to find. Also, the two lids keep dust from accumulating inside, so my scanned pages still look clean after about 3 years of use.

Mostly Happy.......2007-03-29

Although I am happy with the 2 printers I bought for my kids (didn't really need the fax part, but the price was GREAT), I am less than happy with the scanning portion. You can only scan single pages - not portions of books, or larger paper - so it was a little tougher to do reports, or to scan anything larger than an 8x11 page..even if you only wanted a portion of that page.
So, it prints well, it copies well and scans well...just is limited by the 8x11 size restriction for the above. If you need to scan larger items, buy a "flatbed" model; if you need to copy larger items, use a professional model (work, library, Copy Shops, etc.).
And as always, the ink cartridges "could" be a bit cheaper. But I say that about most of them.

VERY EFFICENT MULTIPURPOSE PRINTER, QUALITY OF THIS PRINTER IS
VERY GOOD. THE SPEED IS ALSO GOOD. IT HAS BETTER INK CAPACITY
THAN ITS NEWER MODEL THE HP 4315 WHICH TAKES LESSER CAPACITY
INK. OVERALL ITS THE SAME PRINTER,BUT SINCE I USE MUCH MORE
COLOR AND BLACK INK EVERYDAY I SAY BUY A REFURBED 4215.

Not bad but..........2007-01-18

The all in one printer worked great at first, but then it started acting up more and more frequently. While the errors are fairly easy to take care of, it is still quite a bother.
