Customer Reviews:
Dell 4600 is Great and Still Running.......2007-04-06
I purchased two Dell 4600's in Fall of 2003. Have upgraded both from original specs to 450 Watt PSU's, Intel 3.4 ghz Northwood's, Seagate 160 GB IDE Hard Drives and MSI 5900 and MSI 6800GT AGP Video cards. No problems with any of them and running dual boot Win98SE (that was a trick! but can be done with the Intel 865P chipset in it) and XP. Very quiet machines even with high power video cards. In fact, I see these lasting a long time. I did pick up a Dell 4700 which is esssentially the same as the 4600 but with the Intel 915 chipset (no can do Win98SE on this!) and PCI-e graphics with MSI 7900GTX card. Bottom line....very reliable machines and they dont take up much space. In fact, these Dimensions comes close to the late, great Compaq DeskPro lines of the 286E, 486/50L, 486/66M, XL, 6000 and EN desktops.
Awesome computer, works great.......2007-03-06
I've had my Dell Dimension 4600 since November 2003 and I haven't had any problems with it whatsoever. None at all. It works great, and is the best computer I've owned. I would definitely buy from Dell again
Long time use with excellent results.......2007-01-24
I'm really surprised by the negative reviews posted here. First of all, I'm also surprised this machine is still available since Dell discontinued it over 2 years ago, but even so, it has been an absolutely great machine for me.
I purchased it directly from Dell in Nov 2003 and have had no problems with it. I've had trouble with windows XP, but as with all MS operating systems, if you really "use" your machine you have to completely reload them once a year or so. That's a simple fact that almost every IT person knows and will admit it has to be done. Windows gets "dirty" and no amount of tweaking will fix it. It's important to remember - don't blame Dell for the inferior junk that comes out of Redmond.
Hardware will fail; hard drives stick, memory gets corrupted, cables come loose, PCs overheat and lead to processor errors, etc. Some of these issues are from the user/pilot (ex: gamers over clocking their PCs) but again, when you have multiple parts from many different manufacturers, each has its own failure rate/probability. Anyone owning a PC today should know this (yes, it happens to macs too) and plan accordingly by backing up their data.
Perhaps I've been lucky where others have been unlucky. I own two Dell PCs (4600 and 6000 laptop) and would absolutely buy another (in the next 2-3 months most likely). If you don't want to worry about any potential problems, do yourself a favor and buy an extended warranty. Expect to use it and who knows, you may be pleasantly surprised when you don't.
best desktop ever.......2006-09-05
I have had this computor for three years it has run perfectly throught it's lifetime and is still running fine I have four other computors in my house all of which costed more and are newer, from gateway and other companys so I know what I am saying when I say that this is one of the best buys out there good buy.
Buyer Beware, and Read all these complaints.......2006-08-30
Mine is the same as the others. It worked fine up untill the warranty ran out.
Then, it would no longer do stand-by but shut off.
Three times it wouldn't turn on, but when I wiggled the cord or left it for a day it would work again.
Then one day, it wouldn't turn on. nothing worked, nothing at all.
It is currently with the geek squad, they mentioned that the power supply seems low for the computer, and that it might be the dreaded M word - motherboard.
Reading all the boards I've come to realize these are two HUGE defects with this machine. When the warranty runs out, so too does the mother board and/or power supply.
Here's hoping it's just the powersupply, I can't afford to buy a new computer after only 2 years.
I know i will never by Dell again.
oh yeah, and the Geek Squad warned by that the biggest problem with bying dell is their 'specialized' parts so you can only buy from them, considereing their customer service is ATROCIOUS (they kept referring me to someone else and then hung up) you don't want to do that.
