Amazon.com Product Description
The PowerMate eco Desktop is a PC with a difference. NEC has built the PowerMate eco with the environment in mind, designing a boxless, space-efficient unit that is most notable for what it doesn't contain. Unlike conventional PCs, the system features a lead-free motherboard and a boron-free display. It consumes less electrical current and produces less heat, and does not need or include a power-hungry cooling fan. Although the PowerMate eco isn't quite as powerful as other similarly priced desktops, it is nevertheless a capable and user-friendly machine that seems very right for our times.
Fittingly, the PowerMate eco utilizes one of the most efficient CPUs available today, a 900 MHz Transmeta Crusoe. Unlike most AMD and Intel processors, the Transmeta Crusoe generates almost no heat and therefore requires very little cooling. NEC has matched this processor with 256 MB of RAM (expandable to 640 MB), a 16 MB ATI Rage Mobility M6 graphics accelerator chip, and a 20 GB hard drive. Although ardent gamers and 3-D artists should quite probably look elsewhere, the system should prove quite satisfactory for most other business and home computing tasks.
Devoid of a traditional computer case, the system houses components either in the monitor or its dinner-plate-size base. NEC has fitted the tiny unit with a surprising number of amenities, including two PC Card slots, four USB ports, a parallel and serial port, a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet card, and a 24x CD-ROM drive. All connections are made at the rear of either the base or the monitor.
The system features a state-of-the-art, 15-inch, flat-panel LCD viewing screen, a USB keyboard, and a USB scroll-wheel mouse. NEC has bundled a number of software applications, including Microsoft's Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP Professional operating systems and Norton AntiVirus 2002.
