Small, powerful, and great for getting shots on the go. Learn more about the 8100c Pearl (requires Flash)
|
Design
Like the BlackBerry 7105, the BlackBerry 8100c Pearl is a departure from the form factor of previous BlackBerry devices. This BlackBerry handset is far more phone-like, and RIM's engineers have managed to fit a QWERTY keyboard onto the handset's slim frame. Each button on the keyboard shares two letters and the unit automatically determines which letter is the intended one based on what it predicts you are trying to spell. This unique predictive text technology, known as SureType, makes the BlackBerry 8100c Pearl's handset's diminutive size possible. SureType also learns the words you use most often, further enhancing your typing speed.
The BlackBerry 8100c Pearl sports a large 240 x 260 screen that supports over 65,000 colors--plenty of real estate to view your e-mails, Web browser content, messaging sessions, and attachments. The venerable BlackBerry trackwheel has been replaced on this model with an innovative four-way trackball placed below the screen. On the rear of the handheld, you'll find a 1.3-megapixel camera and a self portrait mirror. The handheld's microSD memory card slot is located inside the device, behind the battery. There's also a standard 2.5mm headset jack that can be used with the included headset, as well as a mini-USB port for data connectivity.
Calling Features
All the calling capabilities folks have come to expect in a wireless phone are present in the BlackBerry 8100c Pearl. The handset's speakerphone makes it easy to use the device hands-free, or if you prefer, you can use a wireless headset via the BlackBerry 8100c handheld's built-in Bluetooth capability. A vibrating alert, speed dial, and a contacts list/address book (limited only by the unit's 64 MB of internal memory) are also included. Any of the phone's 32 included polyphonic ringtones can be used to create caller-specific ringers, so you can know who's calling without having to look at the handset. The unit comes with built-in ringtones, and more ringtones are available from Cingular's MEdia Net mobile Web service.
See the 8100c Pearl in detail. |
A new feature, speaker independent voice dialing, allows you to call contacts with the sound of your voice. No prior voice training is required; you can just say a contact's name to call them.
Messaging, Internet, and Tools
While the BlackBerry 8100c Pearl is a different kind of BlackBerry device, it still delivers the legendary BlackBerry e-mail experience. With BlackBerry service plans from Cingular, you can receive e-mails instantaneously from up to 10 e-mail accounts (personal and enterprise). With BlackBerry push technology, you don't need to retrieve your e-mail. BlackBerry devices are designed to remain on and continuously connected to the wireless network, allowing you to be discreetly notified as new e-mail arrives. Support is also built-in for viewing e-mail attachments (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, WordPerfect, and PDF formats).
If your company has a BlackBerry Enterprise Server installed, you can take advantage of the power of wireless calendar synchronization. Your calendar events are exchanged wirelessly and automatically so that your desktop calendar and BlackBerry handheld calendar are synchronized. All your Outlook meeting requests, changes, and updates are instantaneously synchronized instantaneously with your desktop. Make meeting requests, invite new attendees, and more, all on your BlackBerry 8100c Pearl. Users without BlackBerry Enterprise Server support can manually sync with their desktop calendars and contacts via Bluetooth or USB using the included BlackBerry Desktop Software.
Use the BlackBerry 8100c handset's Web browser to access the Internet from the palm of your hand. Browse Web sites, get up-to-date stock quotes, read the latest news, check weather reports, and more--all at fast speeds, thanks to support for Cingular's EDGE high speed data network. Instant messaging and wireless messaging are also built into the BlackBerry 8100c Pearl. MMS messages can be received and forwarded (Cingular messaging charges apply).
The BlackBerry 8100c Pearl ships with a number of tools, including a calculator, a calendar, an alarm, and a to-do list.
Imaging and Entertainment
The BlackBerry 8100c Pearl really kicks the fun up a notch with the inclusion of a 1.3-megapixel camera that features an LED flash and white balance controls. How about some music? The handheld's music player supports playback of your tunes in MP3, AAC, AAC+, and eAAC+ formats. The handheld is also compatible with Java application and game downloads (available via the MEdia Net service).
Vital Statistics
The BlackBerry 8100c Pearl weighs 3.16 ounces and measures 4.2 by 2.00 by 0.57 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 3.5 hours of digital talk time and up to 360 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the 850/900/1800/1900 GSM/GPRS/EDGE frequencies. The phone comes with a one-year limited warranty.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Device.......2007-06-19
So I decided a few weeks ago that it was time to get a new gadget (the weather, maybe..?). I love my Palm z22, but I've always wished I could just carry a single device. In addition, the display left quite a bit to be desired, and there was no bluetooth or way of attaching an external keyboard (yes, that's right-- I seriously want to be able to type up essays and such on my PDA... I'm not going to spend $700 on a laptop just so I can type in a reclined position) My initial plan was to upgrade my PDA to a Palm Tungsten E2 and my phone to the microscopic Pantech C3 flip phone with bluetooth. I still had some reservations, however. PDA's are practically dead in the market, and the E2 was quite a bit larger than the z22 (Why doesn't Palm just go ahead and make a smaller, super-slim Palm OS PDA with everything except for a phone built-in already? The technology is certainly there, and it could have the potential to bring back the PDA market for those who prefer not having their PDA tethered to a cell phone carrier).
So one day I headed over to the local mall and happened to walk into a Cingular store. I had never considered a Blackberry because they didn't have touch screens and always seemed bulky and ugly. What I stumbled upon in there was the Blackberry 8800. Playing around with the device, I was very impressed. Where the Windows Mobile Smartphones like the Samsung Blackjack and Motorola Q failed (mostly in the Personal Information Manager (PIM) functions... and absolutely miserably, at that), the Blackberry excelled. It wasn't quite as easy to navigate and enter information as my Palm because of the lack of a touch screen, but the device was fitted with a cool little trackball that allowed for multi-directional navigation, making getting used to the lack of a touch screen seem bearable, and maybe even a positive attribute (as it allows for one-handed operation.)
The 8800 screen was hi-res and absolutely beautiful, the whole unit was very thin and sleek, and it didn't run that god-awful, useless-for-anything-but-consumer-multimedia Windows Mobile Smartphone Edition! Still, it was a bit large for my taste and too expensive at $300. Looking around a bit more, I met my future device: the Blackberry Pearl. As it turns out, the Pearl was the first Blackberry to feature the new trackball, brilliant (self-adjusting for brightness) hi-res screen, sleek casing, and a camera and multimedia functions-- all in a bar-style unit just as thin and only moderately taller than a closed Motorola RAZR. Essentially, this was the 8800 packed into a smaller case with a camera for only a $150 upgrade. You name it, this phone can do it (and most of it quite well).
The form factor couldn't be more perfect. Everything about the phone is very customizable. There are 20 keys on the keypad, and the alpha characters are arranged in a QWERTY fashion with at most 2 letters on a key. Even with this, there is still a dedicated delete key, enter key, alt key, symbol key, space key, and caps key, all arranged similarly to a standard keyboard and easily accessible. If you want, you can even sync up a full sized bluetooth keyboard (and buy yourself a mini version of MS Word!). The center 12 keys are highlighted and arranged like a normal cell phone. This makes the unit excellent for use as a regular phone (I'm very pleased with the call quality), but a huge step up from trying to type on one. The "SureType" system does a brilliant job of figuring out what you're typing, and it learns the words that you use most often over time. If you want, you can shut off the SureType and use multi-tap, which is still pretty decent since you never have to tap a key more than once.
I almost think that SureType is faster in many uses than a full QWERTY keyboard, since it requires less finger movement and allows for larger buttons. After a short while, it becomes very intuitive. A few of the small details that I love about the Pearl include the ability to put it on standby, mute the ringer in a hurry, and shut off the network if you don't want to receive any calls (and don't want it blipping and feeding back through a pair of nearby speakers) but still want to use the device as a PDA. On top of all this, the Blackberry software allowed me to transfer all of the data from my Palm z22 (all 300 tasks and tons of calendar and contacts) directly to the Blackberry-- categories, priority levels, and all! To top it all off, the battery life is excellent.
Of course, there are a few downsides to the Pearl. For one, the 1.3 MP digital camera doesn't record video, and while the pictures are better than many camera phones, they're not exactly jaw-dropping (It's still nice to have a camera with you at all times, however), and let's just say the music and video player functions are no iPod replacement. Still, all in all, this is the coolest little portable computer or gadget... ever. If you're looking for a small phone and PDA combo (especially for the PIM functions), the Pearl is the best thing out there. I don't have a data plan, but I tried out the web, maps, and e-mail at the store, all of which worked great. I'd love to be able to use them, but I don't really have the need and the data plans are astronomically priced.
As soon as the Pearl (newly AT&T branded) arrived on my doorstep I wrapped it in a ShieldZone InvisibleSHIELD, which I had ordered online a few days earlier. If you haven't heard of ShieldZone and BestSkinsEver.com, basically they make nearly indestructible, clear screen and full-body skins to protect most portable devices on the market. They're a bit of a chore to put on, but they last the life of the product and prevent any and all scratching for pathetically OCD people like me. I will never buy another portable without buying one of these skins first.
Shipping time is terrible.......2007-05-18
Phone quality - unknown
Shipping quality - terrible
If you order this phone from AT&T, you should know that the shipping time is 4 - 6 weeks! The product is not in stock. If you want to use your new Pearl tomorrow, your only option with Amazon is to get a T-Mobile plan.
NEW: Firmware probems in recent models cause a lot of headache........2007-05-17
There is a major problem with the firmware for those who want to transfer ringtones and applications to the phone... this is the reason for my one star rating, I did this because a lot of people will sort by lowest ratings and I wanted to let the problem be known. Just make sure and download the Blackberry Manager Software from Cingular's website and do not use the software that comes on the CD-ROM with the phone and you'll be ok, otherwise you'll likely be returning you handset for a replacement.
Now on to my review (in bullet points)
PROS (you'll notice most of these features make you more productive):
* It's fast (coming from a Windows Mobile platform it's like lightning)
* In Blackberry fashion it can sync with just about anything
* It's the only small form phone to provide a full QWERTY keyboard layout, although each key is shared by two letters, although it takes some getting use to it works much better than anything else available on small form phones.
* Voice Dial system does not have to be trained and works well.
* Screen is large, bright and sharp
* Battery life is excellent
* Speaker phone can be enabled/disabled in a single touch and works well.
* PTT (Push-To-Talk) capable
* Programmable buttons on the left and right side of the phone can be set to whatever function you want to engage (e.g. By default button on left side is set to PTT, but I changed it engage Voice Dial)
* Camera has a Flash
* Can play many audio and video media formats.
* Natively can display PDF and Microsoft Office docs (in browser)
* Unlike most Blackberry's the Pearl can load "normal" JAR Java games/apps as well as those designed specifically for Blackberry.
* Supports J2ME MIDP 2.0 as well as Sun's Multimedia extensions and extensions for Bluetooth. This just means that mobile application developers will not have to work very hard to unlock all the power of the Pearl to build great applications. In the future some potential very powerful third-party applications could be made available.
* Runs Googles Maps, Opera Mini and all other popular Java applications for mobile phones.
* Comes with a good bit of memory built it, but is also MicroSD expandable
* It's a Blackberry and can do all Blackberry things (it runs RIM's Blackberry OS)
CONNS:
* No WiFi support
* No 3G support
* No support for Flash Lite
* When CSS and scripting options are enabled, the browser still seems to struggle, layout is of full HTML pages is generally bad.
* No built in GPS
* Bluetooth profiles are limited
* No file system explorer
* No "hard reset" feature to restore device to its "virgin" state.
* No case included and you can't seem to stop polishing it.
Pearl is the bomb!.......2007-05-14
I've had my Pearl for over 4 weeks now. It was tricky to active on a Blackberry Enterprise Server, but now it works great! Love the size and good looks. This is my first BlackBerry and it's been really nice to have and the web browser is really fast. It's a little difficult (small) to read, but if you need something on the web, you got it! Also, the voice activated dialing works really well, especially with my motorola headset. This is TRULY handsfree! Highly recommend the Pearl!
Great Phone!.......2007-05-12
After using a Nextel 7520 for 2 years, I was ready for an upgraded phone with a camera. The Pearl is so much smaller that I was skeptical it could really do everything I needed. It CAN! The display is larger and much sharper and better than the Palm Treo 750 I thought I wanted.
I miss the built in GPS capability though. The keyboard works better than I expected for letters, but it's tedious sometimes to enter email addresses, names, web pages.
I love having any kind of ringtone I want now. The camera is nice to have, but the quality is a bit grainy. The size and weight are truly wonderful.

So-so phone........2007-07-01
First, the call quality is very good- much better than my Motorola SLVR v8. If you're looking for a good phone, with a few extra "smart phone" features, this is a good choice.
Some observations after owning this phone for 2 months:
1) SLOW. Everything about the phone is slow from the applications to the AT&T EDGE network. This is NOT a 3G phone, and it shows.
2) The size is great, small and lightweight
3) The software that syncs with your computer (I use a mac) is very good.
4) Scratches easily. The phone is plastic, and the color (including the fake metal) rubs or chips off.
5) It requires a blackberry data plan from AT&T. It is VERY expensive, and probably not worth it. If you complain enough to the AT&T reps, they will give you an unlimited smart phone plan for a quarter of the price.
6) You will want to install additional software like Google Maps.
7) The battery is not very good
8) The the media player is poor
9) The ringer is very quiet
10) The keyboard is very easy to use, after you get used to it.
Red is Beautiful.......2007-06-24
Awesome little phone, emailer, browser, etc. It's like having a tiny computer in the palm of your hand. In addition, it has a good camera and a very good media player device (although I wish it supported WMA music files). On top of all that it's a sexy little device. Also, the phone quality is excellent (with the handset, wired headset, Bluetooth or speaker phone). I'd recommend buying one. I did (through AT&T Wireless) and I couldn't be happier.
Great looking device, but not all I hoped for.......2007-06-09
I had been researching the Pearl for a month or so before I decided this was the phone/device I was going to buy to replace my regular cell phone. While the Pearl performs well, it has its quirks. The phone has frozen up on me a few times. Nothing major and never when it was urgent or important. Usually while browsing the web. I have figured out the reason for the freezing of the phone (at least in my situation) is because of the web page content that is trying to load onto the phone. There is either too much Java script for the phone to handle, or simply too many graphics. You can change the settings of the phone to avoid this, but I find that to be a pain for only a hand full of sites I've had issues with. And sometimes, they load correctly. Typing on the phone does take some time but after enough practice (and patience!), you will be comfortable with it in about a week or two. Navigating through the phones options/settings is a bit confusing. Pairing with other bluetooth phones has been a problem. I have not been successful at this. However, pairing with a bluetooth headset has been no problem. Overall, it's a great little device. Don't expect it to work like your home computer and if you have big fingers, the typing may be an issue. One odd problem was the AC Adapter/Charge for my phone began to melt one night. Not a pleasant experience. But after contacting Cingular, they shipped a replacement charger at no charge. Other than that, and the previous mentioned quirks, I would still recommend this phone.
Love the Phone - Be Cautious of Amazon.......2007-06-07
First, I really like the blackberry pearl. It is great phone that gets great reception and has a lot of useful features. However, the real reason I am writing a review is to alert you that that phones may be refurbished even though they say new. After I received my phone, I was having weird security issues (i.e. not allowing out-going calls, password protection, etc.). I worked with the blackberry administrator for my firm and he said it was due to the fact my phone was refurbished. I contacted amazon, and after a few rounds of emails, they finally admitted that due to a problem with the vendor the phone was refurbished. Amazon never made any effort to contact me before this to alert me that the phone they sold me was refurbished. I am currently in the process of trying to get a "new" phone.
a wonderful phone.......2007-06-01
Wow! Great price for such a nifty little phone! It's loaded with features, looks and feels slick and people love looking at it. The keyboard takes a little getting use to but once you've accomplished that it's a breeze. love it!

Amazon.com Product Description
The latest BlackBerry handheld is better than ever with a thinner profile, a huge screen, a more powerful processor, EDGE data support, and more. The BlackBerry 8700c, an integrated phone, e-mail client (with support for corporate email servers), organizer, and Web browser is the ultimate weapon for mobile professionals.
Take a closer look at the BlackBerry 8700c handheld's functions. |
Design
Design-wise, the BlackBerry 8700c is a nice upgrade from BlackBerry devices of the past. Yes, the same handy trackwheel is present on the right side, and yes, you'll still find a full QWERTY keyboard. This handheld is thinner and lighter, however, and the screen is bigger and brighter than ever; the high resolution 320 x 240 LCD display supports over 65,000 colors. Plus, intelligent light-sensing technology automatically optimizes screen lighting levels for indoor and outdoor viewing. The BlackBerry 8700c also features large, dedicated Send and End keys for easier call management.
The popular BlackBerry user interface is here, too, but it's been updated with a new look. Plus, a powerful Intel XScale processor, 64 MB flash memory, and 16 MB SDRAM combine to deliver a dynamic, highly responsive experience when viewing attachments and graphics, browsing the Web, and running applications. There's also a standard 2.5mm headset jack that can be used with the included headset, and a removable lithium-ion battery is housed in the rear of the handheld.
Calling Features
Many of the calling capabilities folks have come to expect in a wireless phone are present, but the BlackBerry 8700c ups the ante with MP3 ringtones. Plus, the built-in speakerphone offers hands-free calling and convenient conference calls. The handheld's Bluetooth capability (version 2.0) means you can use a wireless headset with the phone for hands-free calling. A vibrating alert, speed dial, and a contacts list/address book (limited only by the unit's 64 MB of internal memory) are also included. The BlackBerry 8700c is a quad-band phone designed for global roaming in 170 countries for voice and 90 countries for data.
Messaging, Internet, and Tools
The BlackBerry 8700c delivers the legendary BlackBerry e-mail experience.
Because the BlackBerry 8700c is fast, and because it supports EDGE high-speed data networks, users can take advantage enterprise applications that are wirelessly enabled by the BlackBerry platform, such as sales force automation, field service automation, network and systems management, and more.
If your company has a BlackBerry Enterprise Server installed, you can also take advantage of the power of wireless calendar synchronization. Your calendar events are exchanged wirelessly and automatically so that your desktop calendar and BlackBerry handheld calendar are synchronized. All your Outlook meeting requests, changes, and updates are instantaneously synchronized instantaneously with your desktop. Make meeting requests, invite new attendees and more, all on your BlackBerry 8700c. Users without BlackBerry Enterprise Server support can manually sync with their desktop calendars and contacts via Bluetooth or USB using the included BlackBerry Desktop Software.
Use the BlackBerry 8700's Web browser to access the Internet from the palm of your hand. Browse Web sites, get up-to-date stock quotes, read the latest news, check weather reports, and more. Wireless text messaging and multimedia messaging (MMS) is also supported by the BlackBerry 8700c.
The BlackBerry 8700c ships with a number of tools, including a calculator with a unit converter and a to-do list. The handheld's software is based on the Java platform, meaning Java-compatible games and applications can be added to the handheld.
Vital Statistics
The BlackBerry 8700c weighs 4.7 ounces and measures 4.3 by 2.7 by 0.8 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 4 hours of digital talk time and up to 16 days of digital standby time. It runs on the 850/900/1800/1900 GSM/EDGE frequencies. The phone comes with a one-year limited warranty.
Customer Reviews:
Had it for more than a year without trouble.......2007-05-19
so far, the phonebook is what really win me over this phone, big screen, qwerty keyboard, side scroll buttons, etc.
very useful phone especially if you got multiple phone entries for contacts.
My First BlackBerry.......2007-05-15
Since it's my first "smart phone" of any kind I don't have much to compare it to. I'm a simple person and so I needed a simple phone that is good for text messaging. I purchased this phone for the full keyboard. That was the only reason. So far it has worked perfectly for me. Just remember that this phone is not an MP3 player, it doesn't have a camera and it doesn't have the ability to share data via bluetooth, but it works great for texting, email, and light surfing.
Poor Call Quality; Great for Email and Organization.......2007-02-21
Just got this phone thru Amazon with a Cingular contract. Its really amazing for checking email and for organization of calender and contacts. However, the call quality is very poor for two reasons. The first is that although the call does not drop, the quality of the call often blurs so that you can barely hear what they are saying. Although Cingular brags about calls not dropping, what good is it if you can barely understand the call itself? Kind of sounds like when a walkie talkie cuts on and off. This seems to happen in about half of the calls. The other problem is that the microphone seems to pick up too much extra noise and is horrible if you are walking in the wind or any semi-loud area like a party or bar.
I am now considering either returning this phone for another of the same (maybe it was just this phone...though if you read the previous reviews you will see many complaining of exactly the same problem), returning it and getting the new 8800 (hopefully will have better call quality), or simply keeping it and getting another phone with good quality and just using the blackberry for email purposes. So far from what I've experienced, do NOT get this phone if it will be your primary phone for calling, the quality is a serious problem. Definately DO get this phone if it is going to be a business/email tool. Its really great for that. Best might simply be to try out the new 8800 and see if it has the whole package.
The Ultimate TREO vs BLACKBERRY review!!!.......2006-12-26
I often hear debates over who has the better smartphone --- Palm or BlackBerry??
I have two lines with Sprint PCS, with my personal line having a Treo 700p and my business line connected to a BlackBerry 8703
First off - I love both phones! However, they are very different, particularly in their strengths and weaknesses --- my review is based upon how well each smartphone handles the following things -
- PHONE FUNCTIONS
- EMAIL
- INTERNET
- PHOTOGRAPHS
- MULTIMEDIA (Music & Movies)
- SPEAKERPHONE
- BLUETOOTH
- COMPUTER SYNCHRONIZATION
- MISC - (Text Messaging, System Stability, PDA Functions)
Okay..... here we go -
1. PHONE FUNCTIONS
For me, the Treo 700p has much better phone functions --- this is mostly because of their touch screen capabilities
When I wanna dial a number off of the Treo, I immediately start spelling the person's name on the keyboard, and I immediately go to my phone book, where I can touch the number I want to dial
The BlackBerry is a bit more complicated, as I cannot touch the screen --- therefore, I'm limited to dialing based upon scrolling to the right name and then pressing the number
Overall, the BlackBerry isn't bad ---- however, I know a lot of people like to use their phone while driving their car (with a bluetooth headset on) or like to use the phone in situations that require a quick reaction.... if you wanna use your phone in the car, then the Treo is the best choice, mainly because the touch screen allows one to go to any name and dial immediately --- as funny as this sounds, you can really only use a BlackBerry, for phone calls, in situations when you can give it total devotion
With that said.... if you are not dialing numbers while driving in the car, then the BlackBerry's phone functions are fine.... they take a bit longer to get going, due to scrolling.... but they get the job done just fine (and yes, you can use the keyboard to look up names in the address book, as well)
2. EMAIL
Okay - this is really the only category where the BlackBerry really beats up the Treo 700 and beats it up GOOD!!!
First off, email on the Treo 700p is no totally useless.... the Treo comes with VersaMail, a program that handles all POP, IMAP, and other email accounts with ease..... there's also a program available called CHATTER EMAIL for the Treo, which makes the Treo's email functions even faster and more versatile
However, the big problem with Treo email is that one has to download the email --- in other words, you have to log onto ChatterMail or VersaMail and wait for a few mins as the program downloads all of the email you've received --- now you can configure a program like ChatterMail to be constantly downloading your email, so one receives it immediately, however this is a BAD choice because such a function basically keeps the Treo on a 'constant' phone call, as it downloads email --- in turn, your cell phone mins get eaten up, battery life goes down quickly, and phone calls are missed do to your phone being occupied on the 'other line'
THe BlackBerry, on the other hand, downloads all of your emails immediately, without draining the battery, without interrupting phone calls, and without eating up your cell phone mins --- my BlackBerry can download my emails more immediately than my own laptop
In addition, the BlackBerry 8703 keyboard is absolutely awesome --- so I much more prefer to write emails over my BlackBerry than I do over my Treo 700p
In summary on this one, the BlackBerry is clearly much better with email.... and if email is the most important thing to you, then go BlackBerry for sure! --- however, the Treo 700p holds its own with email, provided that you are willing to wait and download your emails over something like Chatter or Versamail
3. INTERNET
Both phones handle internet similarly, however, I would give the edge to the Treo 700p mostly because of the TOUCHSCREEN, as it allows one to navigate webpages with more freedom
That said, the BlackBerry is fien too, just a bit more limited
Both phones can connect your laptop to the internet, depending on your cell service --- I've been very pleased with the Treo's ability to connect my laptop to the internet, provided that I use its USB cable with the program USB MODEM ----- I don't have as much experience doing this with my BlackBerry, but I have heard that the results are favorable when doing so
EVDO speeds on both phones are very good
4. PHOTOGRAPHS
If pictures are important, then the Treo 700p is the CLEAR winner
The Treo 700p comes with a great multimedia program, fueld by an embedded Kinoma player, which can allow you to show off pictures with pretty good ease
I'm a Mac user, so I use MarkSpace to get my pics onto my Treo and I'm very pleased with the Treo's ability to show off pictures --- the resolution and quality are shown off very well
I have yet to get pictures onto my BlackBerry though --- I have seen other friends of mine show off pictures on their BlackBerry, but the program does not seem as sophisticated or as user friendly as Palm's
Clearly, the Treo 700p is made to handle pics, whereas the BlackBerry is lagging in this area
5. MULTIMEDIA (Movies/Music)
I am actually DEEPLY impressed with how well the Treo 700p can handle multimedia, both music and movies
I am a filmmaker myself --- with the use of the program, KINOMA PRODUCER, I have compressed many of my short films to small files, for the purposes of showing them off of my Treo to some friends --- the Treo 700p plays the files excellently, with sound coming out of the speakerphone and the resolutions of the films looking excellent!
Even better is that the Treo 700p can handle MP4's and MPEG4's, allowing me to encode the best resolution and best sounding files onto my Treo ---- sadly, the Treo 700p cannot play songs downloaded from the iTunes Music Store, as those are copyright protected, but it will play anything that one encodes with my own devices
The music/mp3 player on the Treo is also excellent, playing tunes through the speakerphone, or through the headphones that the Treo comes with
As far as I can tell, the BlackBerry 8703 does not have any multimedia functions, so good luck getting an MP4 or MPEG4 onto this thing ---- however, Blackberry is working on this, so future BlackBerry's will have this capability --- but if playing movies and music is important to you, then the Treo 700p is the only choice in this department
Lastly - important to include that the Treo 700p also has a built in camera and a built in camcorder --- and the camcorder movies taken on the Treo are actually pretty good quality! --- the BlackBerry 8703 has no camera and no camcorder
6. SPEAKERPHONE
The Speakerphone on both phones is excellent and easy to use, with both being loud and clear
If speakerphone is your main buying point, then you couldn't go wrong with either phone
7. BLUETOOTH
Bluetooth is very solid on both phones
I've been especially pleased with the Treo 700p, whose BlueTooth capabilities are much more solid and stable than the old Treo 650p
The BlackBerry seems to have few problems connecting with my bluetooth headset and other devices ---- I would say that both phones boast great bluetooth capabilities
8. COMPUTER SYNCHRO
It's important to note that I have a MAC and I sync all my phones off of my Mac
For the Treo 700p, I use MarkSpace's Missing Sync, as Palm's software is terrible
For the BlackBerry, BB has launched free Mac-Syncing software, that can be found on their website
Syncing any smartphone off of a Mac is never an easy thing and I've not been too happy with the process
With that said, I'm pleased with MarkSpace's Missing Sync as, for the most part, the program does a good job of syncing my Treo's contacts and calendars, as well as doing photos and music --- unfortunately, the syncing process seems to take forever (usually at least 35 mins) but syncing once a week isn't a big deal
I was pleased with how well the BlackBerry synced to my Mac, however, none of the email addresses for my contacts have transferred --- so there are some kinks to work out, and it could be that I'm just not syncing it right
Main point - both phones sync fine with the Mac, but expect some minor probs --- however, for what its worth, I'm pretty satisified overall
9. MISC - (Text Messaging, System Stability, PDA Functions)
It is important to note that the BlackBerry is MUCH MORE stable than the Treo 700p --- I have had my BlackBerry shut down on me once in the last few months, whereas the Treo 700p probably shuts down once a week
So if stability is important, than the BlackBerry is the way to go
The calendar and address book functions of both phones are excellent, but I would say that the Treo 700p's PDA functions are a 'bit' better
Both phones are fine with text messaging, as well
--- CONCLUSION ---
If I could only use ONE of these phones, then I would definitely pick the Treo 700p --- the reasons why are because the multimedia functions very much impress me, as I like to store some pics and movies on there
In addition, the phone functions are easier to navigate and the touchscreen is something that I couldn't live without on a daily basis --- text messaging, bluetooth, and PDA functions are all excellent, as well, with email being the only thing that lags (but even that's not so bad)
However, I love the BlackBerry's solid system and its excellent email performance
Having one as my personal cellphone and the other as my business setup is the perfect balance --- however, I would give the slight edge to the Treo 700p
With that said --- if you want multimedia and other phone functions, in addition to better phone functions, then the Treo 700p is your phone
If you are all business and clearly value EMAIL over multimedia, then the BlackBerry may be your best bet
Hope that helps
PEACE AND LOVE & HAPPY BUYING!!!!

Great phone for business purposes.......2006-12-25
If you want good phone capabilities and email, then this is the phone for you. I have had many smart phones which had a camera, MP3 player, ability to do excel, etc and found these phones to be slow and inferior to the Blackberry. While it takes a little while getting used to it, once you do, it is a much faster device than any other phone for emailing and texting.

Better than earlier Model.......2007-06-17
I ordered this MSN TV2 Internet and media player for my mother who refuses to use either of my two computers because of difficulty in seeing the screen. She had the earlier model which she sold when she moved in with me. I installed this model so that she'd be able to view the screen on my 34inch TV. I was impressed with the newer version which seems to move from screen to screen quicker than the earlier model. Mother doesn't like it because she can't make out the white lettering on the blue function keys. I still feel this is a superior model, so I give it a four. I have a feeling when I get it moved into her room, she'll be more impressed with it.

those 2 items...are all you need for photos
Good for browsing.......2007-05-21
this works great. i haven't had problems like others clam to have. the only reason i don't need it anymore is i use aim more then msn. since this unit doesnt accept downloads aim and yahoo cant be added. i ended up getting windows xp full version since my ME crashed. its not a bad product. it gets 4 stars only cuz you cant download or update things like flash. if you dont want to spend a ton of money for a 2nd or 3rd computer for only $9.95/month (assuming you have high speed already) its a good alternative. thats what i used it for. 1 more important thing. there are a couple usb ports on the back. you can hook up a usb mouse to it if you like to click on things rather then use the remote.
whats all the fuss?.......2007-05-19
I have had the new msntv2 since it came out, yes it was frustrating a little at first and I hated losing the pip and the scrapbook, but I dont understand people saying the things it wont do. I write email everyday on it, I cut copy paste without a mouse, perhaps some of these people just need a little more patience, give up my msntv2 NO WAAAAY. The main reason I like it is that I do not speak "computereeze" and so I dont have anything to compare it to, I did start out in the 80's with a Commodore 64 but thats another story. I started on webtv in '98 with the original classic and have progressed from there to the msntv2, of which I am on my 2nd one in 4 years but the nice thing is whenever I do have to change units, I have everything saved and appearing on the new unit and I can buy these new units at discounted prices thru amazon or ebay. I AM VERY HAPPY WITH MY MSNTV2.
superior internet experience.......2007-05-16
i have had a webtv classic in my life for years and also a PC , so i have been on every level of the internet food chain from dial up to cable broadband. This item is not nearly as bad as people (usually disgruntled webtv old school diehards) say,
The main quality of this is that is is now in highspeed, dial up webtv was just no good anymore and the way the net is you need broadband. This msn tv 2 also needs no firewall (which is what slows down and protects pc's) so i find that it is faster on the net than a 2005 era loaded computer , computers need way to much pampering and security to use the net, this thing is basically just plug and play.
it does have some small shortcomings to nitpick about , but overall the speed and power and price point make this an excellent buy. no regrets at all in buying this to replace a webtv classic at all.

Customer Reviews:
I'm surprised by the problems.......2006-09-23
I've had my 4155 for almost 3 years and am shocked by the screen problems people have commented on here. I've never had any issue with the lcd and have dropped my unit multiple times (this is an understatement since I'm a clutz). It is carried with me and used often thoughout the day. I have no issues with the wifi and really have no complaints. I have not been cautious with the touchscreen and it is scratched in places (different from the lcd breaking) so I would advise anyone who is buying one to use a good screen protector from the beginning. Also, don't let the battery die because it will hard reset and you'll have to put all your programs back on. Best to back it up weekly or so using the backup utility it comes with and putting the backup on a storage card. Good luck with your purchase!
Great Balance of Size and Features.......2005-08-16
I have owned the iPAQ 4155 for 11 months now (after replacing a 3600 series) and have used it every day since. I can say that it has met or exceeded my expectations in nearly every way. The battery life exceeds 3 days of normal use for me (I haven't seen the battery below about 40 percent even after 3+ days of no charging). The wireless is fairly easy to setup to get on the internet, although I have not found this feature as useful as I thought. More complex wireless operations, like setting up a virtual desktop, are not as straight forward and the entire wireless configuration - asking weather a wireless connection is for "work" or "the internet" - could be simplified (what if it is both?) and have some bugs removed. That being said, I have rarely found the desire/need to get onto a wireless connection once the newness wore off. This may be different if you spend a lot of time at the airport, Starbucks, or other places w/wireless access. The LCD screen is bright and highly visible even in relatively bright light. I have not had a single problem with the LCD screen cracking (and I have owned at least 8 iPAQ's for employees) but I have been careful to protect mine with a metal case such as the one from Innopocket. (The included case does not go too far towards protecting the iPAQ.) Some sort of protective case is vital if you plan to take your iPAQ anywhere at all because the screen is fragile and leaning up against something with it in your pocket will surely crack it if it is not protected. (I have been surprised at the scratches, dings, and warping I have done to the metal case after walking around a jobsite for an hour with my iPAQ in my pocket - but NO damage to the device itself.) One final note: I have not had very much luck at all with "travel sync/chargers" I have purchased which intend to sync and charge the device simultaneously via USB. I have gone back to syncing via infrared (which is pretty straightforward) and charging with the supplied AC charger.
I give the iPAQ 4 stars only because the wireless is somewhat problematic (I have had to "reset" it a number of times), otherwise I would give it 5. -- It really deserves 4.5 but that is not an option.
lcd cracked.......2005-07-23
I advise you don't buy this model. I was given one by my company. I used it briefly, then carefully placed it in it's case in my desk drawer.
After a few months I decided to start using it again, but found that the LCD screen (under the glass) had multiple cracks all over it.
I could hardly believe my eyes since I had put it away specifically to prevent it getting broken, and somehow it broke on it's own!?
Screen cracked twice for no reason.......2005-07-18
I found it cracked one day. No drops, no nothing. Like a fool I got it repaired only to see it crack again in a different location a few months later.
The first time it was the outer glass layer craking from the upper corner. Second time it was a horizontal crack in the LCD layer. Now it's trash.
They made it small, but not sturdy enough. It flexes in your pocket even in a case. Stay totally away from this and live happier for it.
breaks easily/customer support is a joke.......2005-05-25
display screen cracks easily. to make matters worse, don't spend the extra money to buy the protective case because the closure magnets on it also cause the screen to crack. when you call customer service, they charge at least $175 to repair and are very rude.

Works with Xbox 360 too.......2007-05-12
This wireless adapter works great with the 360 as well.
nice product.......2007-01-25
Everything is my room is wireless so when i saw this product it was a must buy. It works just as well as a cable, just costs more ;)
Remove the wires!.......2007-01-18
Having the Microsoft Wireless-G Xbox Adapter has cleaned up the room. We no longer have the wire from the living room to the bed room, all 40 feet of it is gone. It was easy to hook up and after a month of use we have had no problems.
Microsoft Wireless-G Xbox Adapter.......2007-01-10
Expensive but it is easy to setup unlike the D-Link adapter that burned itself up in short order. Recommended.
Xbox heaven.......2007-01-08
It took us a while to get this hooked up (user error). We had the wrong encryption level set which was causing the error. But now that it is working we are very happy with the product. Signal strength is good even though the modem is upstairs. No dropping of connections.

Amazon.com Product Description
This update to the tried and true BlackBerry 7200 Series adds support for Bluetooth, a brighter display, quad-band GSM, and 32 MB of internal memory. This integrated phone, e-mail client (with support for corporate e-mail servers), organizer, and Web browser is the ultimate weapon for mobile professionals.
Take a closer look at the BlackBerry 7290 handheld's functions. You can also view an interactive demo. |
Design
The BlackBerry 7290 follows the standard BlackBerry form factor-- a large 240 x 160 color screen placed above a QWERTY keyboard. The screen offers plenty of real estate to view your e-mails, Web browser content, messaging sessions, and attachments. The popular BlackBerry user interface is here, too, which makes it easy to navigate the handheld's functions. A trackwheel is located on the right side of the unit for quick scrolling through menus and e-mails. There's also a standard 2.5mm headset jack that can be used with the included headset. A removable lithium-ion battery is housed in the rear of the handheld.
Calling Features
Many of the calling capabilities folks have come to expect in a wireless phone are present in the BlackBerry 7290. The unit's Bluetooth capability means you can use a wireless headset with the phone for hands-free calling. A vibrating alert, speed dial, and a contacts list/address book (limited only by the unit's 32 MB of internal memory) are also included.
Messaging, Internet, and Tools
The BlackBerry 7290 delivers the legendary BlackBerry e-mail experience. With BlackBerry service plans from Cingular, you can receive e-mails instantaneously from up to 10 e-mail accounts (personal and enterprise). With BlackBerry push technology, you don't need to retrieve your e-mail all at once. BlackBerry devices are designed to remain on and continuously connected to the wireless network, allowing you to be discreetly notified as new e-mail arrives. Support is also built in for viewing e-mail attachments (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, WordPerfect, and PDF formats).
If your company has a BlackBerry Enterprise Server installed, you can take advantage of the power of wireless calendar synchronization. Your calendar events are exchanged wirelessly and automatically so that your desktop calendar and BlackBerry handheld calendar are synchronized. All your Outlook meeting requests, changes, and updates are instantaneously synchronized with your desktop. Make meeting requests, invite new attendees, and more, all on your BlackBerry 7290. Users without BlackBerry Enterprise Server support can manually sync with their desktop calendars and contacts via Bluetooth or USB by using the included BlackBerry Desktop Software.
Use the BlackBerry 7290's Web browser to access the Internet from the palm of your hand. Browse Web sites, get up-to-date stock quotes, read the latest news, check weather reports, and do even more. Wireless text messaging is also supported by the BlackBerry 7290.
The BlackBerry 7290 ships with a number of tools, including a calculator with a unit converter and a to-do list. The handheld's software is based on the Java platform, meaning Java-compatible games and applications can be added to the handheld.
Vital Statistics
The BlackBerry 7290 weighs 4.9 ounces and measures 4.5 x 2.9 x 0.9 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 4 hours of digital talk time, and up to 9 days of digital standby time. It runs on the 800/900/1800/1900 GSM/GPRS frequencies. The handheld comes with a one year limited warranty.
What's in the Box
BlackBerry 7290 handheld, travel charger, two USB cables, battery, holster, hands-free headset, SIM card, BlackBerry Desktop Software.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect for a small business owner.......2007-05-17
I purchased the 7290 on e-Bay ($35) to replace a 7280. They look almost identical, but what a difference. I bought a Philips Bluetooth earpiece at Fry's to complement it ($15.00), and the reception is superb.
The Cingular coverage in L.A. is excellent and I never drop any calls. With backlight, the screen couldn't be any brighter (one big difference over the dimly-lit 7280). Syncing with either Outlook or ACT! is a child's play.
Best smart phone I've ever had, by far. True, no MP3 or camera, but, hey, this is a business machine.
terrible phone........2007-03-18
I hoped a phone combo would eliminate having to carry a phone and PDA looking like Batman's Bat Belt.
The phone sucks - breaks up and message notices arrive often a day after the call.
This is now a very old unit. I will see if an upgrade means better phone or do I hold out for the mac phone?
BES makes a huge difference.......2006-05-04
The 7290 is a great choice model if you need a Blackberry. I love having my blackberry synchronizing with our Blackberry Enterprise Server, that way i am fully in synch with my Outlook.
BES is a must really for any Blackberry user.
Customer Services is a pain with Cingular, but you shouldn't be dealing with them too much.
Awesome - exceeded expectations and won't be replacing with other models.......2006-04-18
I am an attorney and I purchased this a couple of months ago and it is excellent. I receive e-mails instantly, receive clear reception when placing and receiving phone calls. Plus, with blue tooth technology, I can just place the phone into my blackberry stand or leave it in my purse and still talk instead of holding the blackberry to my ear. I looked at some of the newer models but was not impressed. The 8700 series has a few more amenities; however, the keyboard is smaller and to me the 7290 is more asthetically pleasing. . . what can I say, I'm a woman. I needed the blackberry for phone service, e-mail, the internet and calendaring. I have a computer at home and at work so didn't need to do anything "major" with this device and it serves, if not exceeds its purpose.
I have service through t-mobile and actually refused to consider a blackberry that was not sold by either t-mobile or verizon because according to JD Power & Associates, they receive the least customer complaints. I also have had t-mobile for a year and have been very pleased with their service so thankfully, they also sold the 7290.
Best phone I've owned so far..........2006-04-07
I've own many phones in the past. So far, this one has topped them off! I didn't want a camara, mp3 player (or other "kid stuff"), but a phone that would do three things: 1.) Be a phone; 2.) eMail; 3.) Calendar and applications that would sync with my Mac in an easy and non-confusing way. I got it!

Customer Reviews:
Long live the Internet Keyboard Pro.......2005-02-07
It's a pity and a shame that Microsoft discontinued this keyboard. Their newer keyboards look nice, but they're a little too flashy for me, and I'm not a big fan of the new keyboard layout. If you're looking for the functionality of these newer MS keyboards but with less of the nonsense, this is definitely the way to go. It sports a not-likely-to-offend beige finish and the old-school 104 key layout. Even has a built-in two-port USB hub, the perfect place to plug your USB mouse and game pad. (It's not a powered hub, so don't try plugging in things like printers and hard drives.)
The lower-end Internet Keyboard has 10 additional keys; this thing sports 19. Use them as marked for one-touch access to web browser and media player functionality, or reprogram them to your heart's content. The pain-free driver install and configuration makes this a cinch. And key response is just about perfect; if you don't already know how to touch-type, learn it, and you'll appreciate this even more.
If you can find it, get it. It's more than worth the time and effort.
Great Keyboard... a little too large.......2003-11-02
I bought this keyboard a couple of years ago and have been very happy with it. The only problem is it's size, and I really didn't need all these extra buttons, but other than that, it's a great keyboard. The wrist rest is also quite nice, although I still prefer a gel wrist rest, however with the size of this keyboard, it's easier to use the hard plastic one provided, otherwise the gel one would just keep falling off my desk.
I'm a touch typist, so the position of keys is important and this uses the standard size and spacing which I like. Also, I use this keyboard with both Mac and PC, and the software provided allows me to set the keyboard up perfectly for each platform.
One problem is that it occasionally stops responding and I have to unplug it and plug it back in again, but this doesn't happen that often and is only a minor complaint really. Not as bad as the IntelliMouse Explorer which stops working for days on end.
After getting a thorough soaking with tea, the keyboard obviously stopped working, but after half an hour of cleaning it out and ensuring there was no tea left on the internal contacts, it worked fine, and was much easier to clean out than some keyboards I've tried to repair. So really, it's been pretty damn reliable, even after the tea.
Overall I like this keyboard, but in future, I wouldn't bother with all the additional buttons which never get used to be honest. Without then, I could save an additional inch or two on my desk and have a nice gel wrist rest. However if desk space is not a problem and you get use from them, I can see that they would be useful for some users.
Best ever for power keyboarders.......2003-08-06
I am very hard on keyboards and this is the only one that has lasted for more than a few months - first one lasted more than three years! I am a transcriptionist so spend 8-10 hours everyday using the keyboard for work then later for my own leisure. The spacing between the keys, the key cap size and the layout of the keyboard is a power-user's dream. The weight of the keyboard is heavier than most so it stays in place and really stands up to abuse.
The two USB ports are conveniently located to quickly attach or remove a digital camera or other equipment and when I tried another replacement board I really missed having the ports "right there".
Bottom line is that once I located this keyboard and learned it is no longer manufactured (shame on you MS) I bought two just to make sure I didn't have to buy a keyboard that would slow me down, because this one certainly doesn't.
Just like MS to make a great prod. and then yank it ..........2003-03-25
... from the shelf. This keyboard is now out of circulation. MS decided to discontinue making them, why I dunno. It is great if you have a laptop but like to use a regular Keyboard when space allows. With it's 2 USB ports on the back, you can plug into the USB on your laptop (I only have 1)and still have not 1 but two USB slots available (one for optical mouse and one for digital camera in my case). Great idea, at least I thought... guess MS didn't like the idea of a happy customer.
A Great Keyboard.......2002-09-27
I love this keyboard. I have one at home and I wish I had one at work. This keyboard predates MS's repurposing of function keys and rearrangement of cursor control keys. It's not nearly as pretty as the newer keyboards coming out, but it's a lot more functional if you're a power-keyboarder. The hotkeys are great and completely customizable if you don't like what they're doing. I've hardly reprogrammed any of them, though. My favorite hotkeys are the mute, volume and play controls. They work fine with media players other than Windows Media Player.

Customer Reviews:
Depends on expectations.......2003-05-20
I bought two of these little cameras, in part because they were cheap (I paid around $$ each) but mainly because they were so small and light I could send one in a bubble-pack envelope to a pen pal in India (smuggled, in other words) and we could exchange pictures via the Internet.
When reading reviews here and elsewhere, it almost sounds as if there are two cameras in question. The biggest problem seems to be battery life, but everyone is vague about this. I tested mine in the following manner: I put in a fresh alkaline AAA battery and took 24 shots in "high" resolution (640x480) at 8am. I then checked hourly until 11pm to see if the pictures were still in the camera. After 28 hours, I plugged the camera into my PC and saved the pictures to a file successfully.
While the software says "copy," it apparently means "move." The pictures were no longer in the camera following downloading to a file. So I immediately took 24 more. Same battery in the camera. After this, I no longer checked by turning on the camera. I hooked up at 75 hours and was able to view the pictures as a slide show, which didn't remove them from the camera. Same story at 110 hours. That satisfied my needs, so I checked no more.
This is in stark contrast to other people's experience, so I assume they either left the power on, or have defective cameras. Since current drain would be a design function, I suspect the former.
As for picture quality, it's okay for snapshots where you just want a record. Not unlike a very cheap film camera. I did notice some blurry areas that don't look like lens problems. Maybe the surface the image is focused on isn't flat. I was able to get decent pictures without much attention to holding the camera in a special way, but I know how to depress the shutter without jerking, which is the key. I was even able to take successful one-handed "palm shots" when I didn't want to be seen taking a picture.
So if you have the option of returning a defective camera, and don't expect salon quality (I could enlarge to almost 5x7 in my computer), it's a neat little cheapie camera.
Doesn't work.......2003-03-05
I agree with the previous reviewer's comments. The Stylecam Snap didn't retain the shots I took despite a brand new battery. I returned the product for a refund.
Barely a camera.......2003-02-18
This thing is so small and cool I had to order it.
Pros:small, cool, cheap, downloads to PC fast and easy.
Cons:
1)Twice I lost all the photos I'd taken, even though battery was good and even with this new improved model that has a capacitor to keep this from happening.
2)Uses quite a few batteries, but still acceptable.
3)You MUST hold the camera VERY still.
4)It always defaults to indoor photo setting. Each time you want to take an outdoor photo you must go thru the menu again to outdoor(6 steps).
5)This camera never really takes a 'good' indoor or outdoor shot. Always too bright or dark or grainy or white.....
6)I got it mostly for my kids but they just can't hold it still enough. Then I decided it would be for me. 1 in 10 photos would be OK. I didn't keep a single photo I took.
I returned it in the end. Too bad cuz it was so nice to carry the thing around in my pocket. It really is the size of a cracker.
