As one of the most cost-effective models in HP's Pavilion lineup of personal computers, the Pavilion 515n Desktop PC delivers modern basics at a very affordable price point. Those who constantly strain their computer with processor-intensive applications and severe multitasking will want to look elsewhere, but the Pavilion 505n is a solid choice for everyday tasks such as word processing, spreadsheets and Internet surfing.
At the heart of the Pavilion 515n lies a 2.3 GHz Intel Celeron processor. HP has matched this budget-conscious CPU with a minimal 256 MB of DDR SDRAM memory (expandable to 1 GB), an integrated Intel Extreme graphics chipset with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) memory, and a surprisingly large 80 GB hard disk. Other data handling tools include a 3.5-inch diskette drive for older or smaller applications and backup needs, a CD-Writer drive for playing and burning audio CDs and archiving information, and a DVD-ROM drive for watching movies and installing and playing DVD games. Gamers should note, however, that they'll need to add a speedier video card in order to efficiently run the latest 3-D games.
The Pavilion 515n sports a number of amenities normally reserved for more upscale systems, including a full half-dozen ultra-fast USB 2.0 ports (two on the front) for speedy data streaming with plug and play peripherals, a two-button PS/2 scrolling mouse, a convenient HP Internet Command Center keyboard, and a pair of small but adequate Polk Audio desktop speakers. The unit does not provide an IEEE 1394 FireWire port for interaction with supporting peripherals such as digital camcorders, nor does it offer DVD burning.
E-communication options include a 56K modem for low-speed Internet and e-mail access and a 10/100Base-T networking interface for high-speed LAN interaction. Bundled software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition, the versatile WordPerfect Productivity Pack and Intuit Quicken Financial Center. HP has not included a monitor, thus allowing users to independently select a model based on their own preferences.
