Product Description
Hewlett-Packard has given the concept of value a whole new look with the HP Pavilion PC. Combining a dependable, high-speed processor with a stylish, compact, all-new chassis design, it delivers a price/performance balance that is ideal for first-time PC buyers and those who want an inexpensive computer. Beneath the sleek, translucent design, however, is plenty of room to grow, because this design allows you to add features, as your computing needs change, boosting performance and expanding your multimedia possibilities in the process. The HP Pavilion PC - it is quality and value.
Amazon.com Product Description
As the mid-priced entry in Hewlett-Packard's mid-level 700 series of desktop computers, the HP Pavilion 754n Desktop PC should offer a good balance between cost and performance. And it does. Yet it's also an impressively powerful machine, loaded with a fast Pentium processor and a bevy of high-end features you won't always find at this price point.

At the heart of the system lies a data-crunching 2.53 MHz Intel Pentium 4 CPU and 512 MB of PC2100 DDR SDRAM memory (expandable to one full GB). The only potentially weak processing link is the graphics accelerator; an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics chipset with up to 64 MB shared video memory. Though the CPU and memory are ready to blaze through virtually any desktop task, the graphics chipset is not ideal for 3-D animation and drawing packages or the latest 3-D games.

HP has clearly constructed the Pavilion 754n to meet the growing demands of those who need alternative methods of data storage and movement. Apart from its massive 80 GB Ultra DMA hard disk, the system sports a 3.5-inch diskette drive, a 48X CD-ROM drive and a DVD+RW/+R drive--the latter of which allows you to burn home movies to disc, create mixed music CDs and backup copious quantities of information. HP has also installed a full half-dozen ultra-fast USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals and two IEEE 1394 ports for high-speed links with external devices such as digital camcorders, scanners and drives.

The Pavilion 754n features a broad range of useful amenities, including a two-button PS/2 scrolling mouse, an HP Internet Command Center one-touch keyboard, a 10/100 Base-T networking interface for high-speed LAN and e-communication access, an internal 56K modem for low-speed connectivity, and a pair of self-enclosed Polk Audio speakers. It should be noted that the system does not include a monitor, thus allowing users to choose a custom model from the many brands and styles available today.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Computer.......2004-01-17

I purchased this HP about a year ago and I have had zero problems with it. I broke the CD ROM by bumping into it with my chair, HP came to my house and promptly replaced it for free, no questions asked. If I cannot afford an Alienware CPU in the future I will defenitly purchase a HP again.

3 out of 5 stars lemons or not?.......2003-09-09

I bought my first HP Pavilion in 1995 had really no problems except operator error, it lasted about 3 yrs before opsolete. I did ok with it, so bought another in 1998 again no problems lasted about 31/2 yrs, so ok new computer every 3 yrs or so, not bad. Was pretty happy with HP, so did it again in 2002, got a 752n brought it home didn't work, so I returned it (maybe dropped or something) got another lasted about 2 months, returned to HP, got another, 2 months later returned again, got another this one lasted 3 weeks. Finally HP upgraded me(in their words)to a 754n bigger hard drive, dvd writer, more ram, sounded good right? Well the computer is pretty good, haven't had any problems so far, but did upgrade to agp graphics card. Only thing I really don't like is the software that came with it, I went from the MS Word package(on the 752n)to the Corel Wordperfect package(on the 754n)all banking on Money, new software was Quicken which really made me mad, as you can go from quicken to money, but not money to quicken, I had to enter everything manually, luckly only 3 months worth. Today(5 months later)still don't like the software, so in process of getting MS Works suite 2003. After all the problems with the HP 752n, I really don't think I'll be getting another, I lost too much when the 752N crashed(Pictures, banking, letters, etc.), but so far the 754N has been working pretty good(knock on wood)we'll see if it goes over 3 yrs, then I might change my mind? of coarse that would also depend on, if HP ever gets good tech support, HP is really lacking in that department.

3 out of 5 stars I got a lemon at first ..........2003-08-24

At the time I bought the HP 754n it had just been released and seemed like a good package at a good price. This was November 2002. I bought it and it ran fine, no problems, for about 2 months, but then it went haywire and had all sorts of problems. I had purchased the 3 year on-site service plan at one of the major appliance retailers. I called HP and asked about my in-home service and they laughed at me, I got nowhere. I returned to the store where I bought the pc and said I had got a lemon, and had purchased the service plan. The store manager admitted that there may have been some lemons in the first batch, and switched the pc with a new one of the same model. Since then, no problems, but I'm not sure if I would purchase another HP pc. I have just got a new Sony VAIO and so far I am pleased with it. The HP still works but I do not trust it, specifically its CD-RW drive. It sometimes makes bad copies.

5 out of 5 stars Stable PC- HP Pavilion 754n.......2003-08-13

This PC is great for stability and performance. What I liked was that it had a Pentium 4 2.53GHz cpu with a fast front side bus of 533MHz. This helps out with programs like video editing.

Althought I got mine refurbished, the price was great for the product. I built 2 other PCs before and had trouble with various reasons like an overheating cpu. All I can say is that this quiet PC should last you for years. The DVD writer is a great tool for modern PCs these days because you can store home videos and back up large quantities of data.

The only slight downside is that the video is integrated so it is OK for gaming. I would recommend buying an AGP video card. The good news is that the hard drive space is 80GB and you can hold a lot of data. I kind of disliked the idea of having a partition of the hard drive. HP should have included recovery discs or something. Other than that this PC is great!

4 out of 5 stars Good buy.......2003-03-18

I just bought this PC. On comparison shopping, it came out cheaper than an equivalent (almost) Dell system, and much cheaper than all others. No bundle, just the PC and tiny speakers. Packs a lot of computing power, memory etc for the money.
Nice Soft keyboard & a sensitive optical mouse (cool). XP Home boots up really quick (~ 1 min), but the interface would take some getting used to, for windows veterans. Things have been moved around and hidden from plain sight.

Jukebox(preinstalled) is a pain in the you-know-where, and does not run without registering, but is setup as the default player of all music files.

More, as I discover...
