The Basics

Hard Drive: The massive 160 GB Ultra DMA hard drive (7200 RPM) offers more than enough storage for all your documents, digital photos (approximately 160,000 2-megapixel images) and video (approximately 9 hours of .avi video), and MP3 collection (up to 2,000 CDs).
Processor: The 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading technology (which allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system--see more in Tech Talk section below) is suited for high-performance needs, including intense 3-D gaming, database development, and video editing. It also has a 1 MB L2 cache and 800 MHz front-side buss (FSB).
Memory: The m470n comes with a 512 MB built-in memory (1 x 512 MB PC-3200 DDR SDRAM)--a decent amount for starters, but you'll want to add more to take full advantage of the capabilities of Windows Media Center. The motherboard has two memory sockets for a maximum memory expansion of 2 GB.
CD/DVD Drive: The m470n has two optical drives: a 48x CD-ROM for playing music and games and a DVD+RW burner for writing data and video to disc. For DVDs, it has 8x write, 4x rewrite, 12x read speeds; for CDs, it writes at 24x, rewrites at 10x, and reads at 40x. It's compatible with the DVD+RW format, one of two formats for rewriteable DVDs.
Keyboard & Mouse: It comes with HP's Media Center keyboard with full multimedia control and scrolling optical mouse (both with PS/2 connections).

Sound and Graphics
The installed ATI Radeon 9200 AGP 8x video/graphics card is a relatively strong 3-D graphics renderer, and it has 128 MB of shared video memory and a TV-out connection. The integrated sound card uses the AC'97 (Audio Codec '97) standard (configurable to 6 channels of audio). The m470n comes with a three-piece set of Harman Kardon 2.1 speakers (1 subwoofer and 2 satellites).

Preloaded System and Software
The pre-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 is essentially Windows XP Professional Edition with a variety of tools to help you to create, organize, and enjoy digital media ranging from music to home movies to photo slide shows. Additionally, it enables you to control your television with the included remote and record and pause programs (much like a PVR such as Tivo or ReplayTV). You can even pause or rewind (up to 7 seconds) FM radio broadcasts.

Very good machine.......2004-09-17

I too was impressed with this machine. As the previous reviewer wrote it is not exactly set up for the novice but with patience and use of the literature provided set up was easy. The Media center is great. The key to reception is a good antenna or a cable connection. I do not have cable but the tuner in it is comparable to my regular TV set up. I do wish it came with the XP disc instead of the drive being preloaded and partitioned thus having to create recovery discs.

Great machine for the money........2004-05-31

For the experienced computer user this is a great machine. I can understand that it is not a tool for a novice but with a little study the programs are fairly easy to use. I had my m470n set up in less than an hour and had the media center humming in another hour. Everything works great and I'm genuinely impressed with what you get for the price.

An Expensive Paperweight.......2004-05-25

My wife and I bought one of these a few weeks back and it is by far the worst computer we have ever owned. Nothing works correctly. The quality of the TV signal varies wildly, e-mails are suddenly deleted for no apparent reason, the computer shut itself down if you tried to do more than one thing at once (ie, read email and listen to an MP3), the CD burner would claim CD-Rs were actually CD-ROMs and would refuse to write to it, it refuses to recognize devices plugged into USB ports and... well believe me I could go on and on but I seem to be limited to 1000 words. I will say that the warranty from HP has proven to be absolutely worthless. Our efforts to get either a working computer or (preferably!) our money back have proven to be useless. Our nearly $2,000 for this Hp system has bought us nothing but heartache, frustration and lost productivity. I urge you not to make the mistake we did. Do not buy this product.
