  HP has the WORST customer service of any company of any kind that I have ever dealt with. I have never called without having spent at least one hour on the phone with them before the various extensions in India, none of whom are helpful. And once the service is complete the computer is usually returned with more problems than they were originally sent with. I would never buy another HP again

  The other review for this item might scare you into not buying it, but we installed one of these firewalls to protect my employers network and it has performed flawlessly. We liked it's gigabit capability, and that it can be connected to 2 internet sources for redundancy or to increase capacity. We also like it's construction, which is a solid metal cabinet which seems to shed heat nicely and has enough heft to say put if it's simply set of a shelf.

  While I have been very pleased with the performance of this product, configuration and setup was very easy, and even updates to the device are easy to do, it's not reliable.
  
  It seems that every 3 or 4 days I lose connection to the Internet. This is a 7 PC network, couple of servers. There really isn't huge bandwidth being used. But it is like it gets frozen - you can't ping it, you can't get to anything on the outside like the gateway or DNS servers, and a simple power reset gets it working again.
  
  Nothing is in the log, I have to believe this is some sort of firmware problem. I have checked all the ideas on Netgear's site without help. I know at least some of the time it freezes during the middle of the night, when no one is using it. Could it be getting zapped from the outside somehow? But it sure is not reliable, I can't recommend it.

  Not worth the money.......2007-03-07

  I purchased this laptop new for over $2k in the summer of 2005. It had two repairs within the warranty period. The electrical plug in the machine broke. It later began making noises and performing very poorly, CPU usage would spike to 100% for no reason. This was after a complete recovery. I decided to purchase the warranty after the breakdowns that occured within the manufacturer warranty period. My wireless has never worked properly, despite it working just fine with my other computers. The wired network card stopped working three weeks ago. I finally decided enough was enough, and my problems were not software based. I spent two hours on the phone bouncing between Sony and their extended service plan company, Service Net last week. I was told to run the recovery media disks again, so I did, and it wouldn't work. I ended up with an error that stated to replace my hard disk drive and failure may be imminent. Thankfully, I already had backed it up on a flash drive. I am not sure if I will ever buy a Sony computer ever again. I have an HP desktop from 2001 that has only had minor problems. I also have a new HP desktop and it has been doing okay so far. I also have two laptops sitting in the closet that don't work an HP Pavillion (it has a broken electrical component) and an old ibm thinkpad (broken electrical component). My advice is if you don't asbolutely need a laptop, buy an HP desktop.

  i bought this laptop from a retailer outside of amazon for $2000+, thinking i was getting a top-of-the-line system, perfect for college! i was wrong. i've had to bring it to my tech services on campus 4 times to help me with these problems:
  
  - wifi connection problems
  - windows registry problems (with the HOME edition it came with. i actually had to buy xp pro and perform a clean install, losing all my saved data)
  - my battery life, 2 years later, lasts about 20 minutes
  
  bottom line, don't buy it. it's almost like a 50/50 with sony products; it's either great or terrible.

  I am remarkably disappointed with the speed of this laptop, it's slow. Sony doesn't give you recovery disks. For the money it should really have come with Xp Pro. A lot of the software it comes with asks you to upgrade for a price, which gets annoying after a while. I now also get a dwwin error on shut down, which is something to do with Dr. Watson being corrupted. Which is kind of hard to fix without aformentioned recovery disks. The error can be somewhat fixed by turning off Microsoft Error reporting in My Computer. Other users have the same problem.

  STAY AWAY FROM VAIOS.......2006-08-26

  My laptop has completely broken down TWICE in the 1.5 years since purchase ($2100 new !!!!) Motherboard and hard disk replaced 6 months ago, and now motherboard needs to be replaced again. STAY AWAY FROM THESE GARBAGE-TOPS. There is already a class-action lawsuit against Sony VAIO laptops filed in California, and will be one filed in New York soon.

  The dv40404us was my first notebook and I totally love it! I have it since may, 2005 and it never had a problem. I use it for everything, I work with it, I watch movies, play games... Now we bought other notebook because my husband needed one and we chose other HP.

  Poor quality and service.......2006-11-14

  I have owned an HP Pavilion 4000 series notebook for about two years and have sent in for repair four times already. The issues varied from a defective battery, to a defective power supply, to defective system fans and overheating, to locking up unexpectedly. The only consistent factor was the poor customer service I received from HP and the incompetence of the customer support and service outfits for HP.
  
  One of the times, the notebook was returned to me with the HP technician's testing drive installed in it. Another time, the notebook was returned missing all the covers from the bottom (hard drive cover, memory cover, etc.)
  
  This time, the whole computer is missing and the customer support reps do not know the status nor where it is. I have not received assurances from HP that the issue will be resolved anytime soon and all I can get from them is that it is "scheduled" to be shipped to me a week ago.
  
  Extremely poor quality and lack of service make me recommend against purchasing this or any HP notebook.
  

  Anything but HP.......2006-10-31

  I bought a variant of this model (dv4000) 1.5 years ago and it's been causing problems ever since. The mouse, touchpad and keyboard all freeze on a frequent basis. I also had a recent surprise from HP regarding the warranty. I had purchased a one year warranty extension from HP just before my original warranty was about to expire. Now I'm told that the HP calculates warranty periods from the purchase date and although I had purchased the extension a couple of weeks before expiration, the second warranty was applied as an add-on to the original, for the remaining couple of weeks. Of course there was no information about this on the web-site which I did the purchase. So I had to purchase another year's warranty to get support on the never ending problems caused by the computer from the very beginning.

  HP has the WORST customer service of any company of any kind that I have ever dealt with. I have never called without having spent at least one hour on the phone with them before the various extensions in India, none of whom are helpful. And once the service is complete the computer is usually returned with more problems than they were origionally sent with. I would never buy another HP again.

  This laptop model crashed two times within a year. The first was the hard disk and now the motherboard. I have a friend bought a newer model and the battery life decreases big time with in 2 months of usage.
  
  Sony does not provide me with satisfactory service, even it is covered with a guarantee. They wont agree to do the service unless I call the support million times.
  
  Nice laptop but not reliable at all and bad maintenance support...

  Terrible: this laptop broke within 1 month of owning it........2005-12-07

  This laptop is stylish, lightweight, and the screen display is especially great. However, those are about the only good things I can say about it. I owned my laptop for about a month before it stopped working.
  
  The power would cut out after it was on for more than a few minutes. Sony phone support insisted that I reformat the drive before they would believe that it was a hardware problem. Their onsite service sounded like a great idea until the repair person showed up at my door. The first person had to replace my entire motherboard but broke the keyboard while putting the machine back together. The second repair person flaked on the appointment to fix the broken keyboard. More than 2 months since the problem started, I am still waiting for Sony to send a third repair person out to fix the hardware issue. Sony support has made it seem as though it is my fault that the laptop is not working; have been less than polite; have kept me on hold for hours; and have run me around in bureaucratic circles trying to get a brand new computer fixed.
  
  In summary, considering the faulty hardware and terrible service Sony has to offer, I would recommend that you buy an Apple PowerBook or an IBM ThinkPad for the same price.

    This is almost the exact model I bought 4 months ago. It is a good deal, functions very nicely and has a great set of features. Seriously, I don't know how they make money on this. The price is absolutely reasonable.
    
    However I had some concerns about the use and weathering of some of the materials used (at the time I bought it), that have proved to be legitimate. The keyboard half uses three materials; black matte plastic (so far so good), glossy black plastic (ugh), and perforated metal (ummmmm. no!). the glossy black surface around the keybard, (y'know the part you TOUCH!) picks up every fingerprint and oil that that occurs naturally on a human hand. Within one day of using it, this surface is disgusting. You're showing someone your work on the screen and all of a sudden you're both distracted by the revolting keyboard enclosure.
    
    Likewise for the perf metal. Anything softer than metal that gets accidently rubbed against it fills the holes with gunk; that and the paint is eaily scaped off it because the holes give such tactility to the surface.
    
    The HP series looks pretty shabby pretty quickly. Your computer shouldn't function great and take all it's his on style. Replace these materials. I know they're the signature look of HP, but how about choosing a look that isn't detrimental to the computer?
