Amazon.com Product Description

Featuring cutting-edge flash memory, the black Sony VAIO VGN-UX390N Micro PC is an ultra-portable, full-functioning PC small enough to fit in your pocket. Taking the PC to the next level, the UX390N stores data on 32 GB of solid state flash memory, instead of a traditional spinning disc drive. Weighing just over a pound and measuring 5.9 by 3.75 inches, it easily fits in the palm of your hand. The UX390N features a 4.5-inch widescreen SVGA screen that ingeniously slides up to expose an integrated keyboard. The pocket-sized UX390N comes equipped with a stylus and Sony's VAIO touch launcher for quick access to functions frequently used such as Internet access, e-mail, various computer applications, games and music. Just push the launcher button located on the side of the unit.

It's powered by Windows Vista Business and Intel's groundbreaking Core Solo processor with ultra-low voltage for extended battery life. Advanced wireless capabilities are built right in--including tri-mode Wi-Fi, WWAN, WLAN, and Bluetooth--and expansion is a breeze with the included port replicator. It even includes two built-in cameras--one on the front (0.3 megapixels) for VoIP tele/videoconferencing and the other (1.3 megapixels) on the back for taking snapshots. Other technical features include a 1 GB of RAM, a Memory Stick slot, and a full complement of pre-installed software (from Internet security to Microsoft Works). For added convenience, a docking station with three 2.0 USB ports, Ethernet, VGA, iLink (FireWire/IEEE-1394) interface and an AV output comes with the unit, making it easy to connect to peripherals like a full-sized keyboard, display and speakers when back in the office or at home.

Advanced Wireless Mobility
The UX390N features Sony's SmartWi technology, which seamlessly integrates wireless Wide Area Network (WAN), 802.11a/b/g wireless LAN and Bluetooth technologies, enabling you to toggle among your wireless connectivity options depending on your surroundings. The tri-mode wireless LAN is compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and wi-fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). The integrated wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) technology lets you access the Cingular Wireless EDGE network to extend your wireless coverage beyond LAN access networks and hotspots (a Cingular SIM card is included; see more about WWANs below). And with the Bluetooth wireless connectivity, you can synchronize and transfer files between the PC and peripherals such as cell phones and PDAs.

Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN)
If you're the ultimate road warrior, you need to access the Internet and check e-mail without having to plug in your Sony Vaio notebook PC, and without cables to boot. Welcome to the world of WWANs (wireless wide area networks). With WWANs, you can access critical network resources and home office files from the front seat of your car, the airport, the local coffee shop, or your recliner at home. Sony Vaio computers use SmartWi technology to access the Cingular Wireless national EDGE (Enhanced Data for Global Evolution) network.

A WWAN uses long-range wireless connections -- the same networks as cellular phones -- to provide access across a large geographic area. In comparison, a WLAN (wireless LAN) covers only one or more buildings located close together. The use of wireless connectivity on a WLAN is simply an alternative to the PSTN (public switched telephone network), which you may have used -- or still use -- to dial into your ISP (Internet service provider) or reach your company's network. On a WWAN, however, you use wireless connectivity to reach your carrier's data network instead of plugging into a phone jack and dialing into your ISP. Each mobile device communicates with the public carrier's base station, providing coverage across entire states, regions, and countries via cell phone towers.

Security & Safety Features
Sony's line of Vaio UX micro-PCs take security seriously, employing a biometric fingerprint sensor and proprietary hard disk drive protection software to ensure your data is protected from unauthorized use as well as accidental damage. Fingerprint biometrics is a convenient and secure way to protect your computer and the information on it with a simple swipe of your finger. It also stores passwords to secure web sites you visit, so authentication and access are quick and easy--you only need your fingerprint.

The Basics

Screen, Video & Audio
The UX390N's wide, touchscreen 4.5-inch XBRITE LCD has a 1024 x 600-pixel resolution (SVGA) and includes control buttons for zooming, scrolling, and a stick pointer, as well as the ability to view in either landscape or portrait orientations. The high brightness level of an XBRITE display means that black tones appear richer and deeper while white tones remain brighter. Graphics and text display clearly and colors appear more lifelike. This Micro PC includes a built-in monaural speaker and is compatible with the Windows sound system. Video and graphics are powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, which uses Intel Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT) and provides up to 224 MB of shared video memory.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
The UX390N has a single USB 2.0 port, headphone and microphone jacks, Memory Stick slot (compatible with Memory Stick DUO and MagicGate functionality), and a port replicator connection. The included port replicator offers three USB 2.0, FireWire, VGA out, composite A/V out, and Ethernet (10Base-T/100Base-TX) connections.

Operating System
The Windows Vista Business operating system is designed to meet the needs of business organizations of all sizes. For small businesses, Windows Vista Business will help keep PCs running smoothly and more securely so you will be less reliant on dedicated IT support. For larger organizations, Windows Vista Business provides dramatic new infrastructure improvements, enabling your IT staff to spend less time focused on the day-to-day maintenance of PCs. An array of sophisticated new backup technologies helps protect your information even in the event of a catastrophic hardware failure. And Windows Vista Business has a new user interface, named Windows Aero, which is designed to deliver new levels of efficiency for any business user. This new interface makes it easy to navigate through the operating system and from application to application. For instance, Windows Aero helps you juggle multiple tasks at once by providing a three-dimensional, real-time, animated view of all your open applications and documents.

Every edition of Windows Vista provides the essential tools and technologies to help protect you whether you are browsing the Internet, connecting to a wireless network, or just reading e-mail. All editions of Windows Vista include new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures long before you have lost any important personal data. And, all Windows Vista editions include parental control features that allow you to manage and monitor your family's use of games, the Internet, instant messaging, and other activities.

Preloaded Software
Includes Microsoft Works, Microsoft Office 2007 Student and Teacher Edition (60-day trial), Symantec Norton Internet Security 2007 (with 60 days of Live Update).

Dimensions and Weight
Amazingly small, the UX390N measures 5.9 x 3.75 x 1.5 inches (WxHxD) and weighs just 1.2 pounds with the included standard battery.

Power
It comes with the standard VGP-BPS6 standard capacity lithium ion battery, which provides between 2.5 and 4.5 hours of power (depending on usage). The optional large capacity VGP-BPL6 battery can power the UX390N for up to 9 hours.

What's in the Box
This package contains the VGN-UX390N, detachable stand, stylus, lithium-ion rechargeable battery, AC adapter and power cord, port replicator, Cingular SIM card, soft carrying case, and VGA/LAN adapter. It's backed by a 1-year limited warranty with 1 year of toll-free technical telephone assistance.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The Appeal Dims With Use.......2007-06-28

I always wanted the smallest possible computer. I owned an HP95LX and similar models, then graduated to the Toshiba Libretto that I absolutely loved, but in recent years there was nothing on the market small enough to attract me. I bought the Sony UX380 because it looked like the answer to my dreams. The unit I bought was mounted in a display that did not permit you to type on it or to do much more than just touch it. That was not an accident.
When I got this baby home, I was horrified to see all the unnecessary software that filled the harddrive. It took a long time to get that stuff off and then to install Office and One Note from Microsoft. I then took the UX380 on a business trip as my only computer. After the trip, I sold it.
I am an old guy. The screen resolution is fabulous, but it was just too darned small to work with. The zoom view is not helpful. If you zoom, you frequently can't enter data, so you have to keep going back and forth. Very irritating. The tiny keyboard is very hard to use. It is no where near as good as a Blackberry. You have no tactile response, so sometimes the letter does not appear, other times you get two or three. Two finger typing is the best you can hope for.
I love the idea of this machine, but I need a bigger screen. If you haven't looked at the Samsung Q1 tablet PC, you should. The screen is lower resolution but much easier for aging eyes to read. There is only a virtual keyboard, so you'll need to pick up an external one. It makes a definitely bigger package, but still quite friendly for travel. The Stowaway blue tooth or Samsung USB keyboards are both great.
I'll be using the Samsung until Sony or Toshiba come up with a tiny machine that I can really use.

1 out of 5 stars useless device.......2007-06-05

I read the reviews of this device and was excited to purchase. i got the computer from amazon and immediately i was disappointed. the screen is very bright but totally useless and difficult to read. The keyboard is COMPLETELY useless. has absolutely no tactile feel. Forget it if you have big fingers as i do. i have a blackberry for work and i can type a thousand times faster with that. if you are not looking at the key board the entire time you simply dont know if you hit the right keys or not. typing in passwords is incredibly painful because of this issue. Some of the reviewers have said that the computer is reasonably fast. im not really sure what they are used to, but this computer is incredibly slow. Part of that is due to the norton antivirus because it sped up a little when i disabled some of the functions but it didnt fix the problem completely. Im not really sure who can use this thing and what purpose it would serve.

5 out of 5 stars Great little device, but too much junk installed! (Still a great cutting edge PC).......2007-05-21

I really like the Sony UX-3x0N line of Ultra-Micro PC's.

Sony definitely improved on all the other ultra-micro PC's out there. Most followed the Microsoft "Origami" spec, which didn't include a keyboard (why?). Sony included a keyboard, but they didn't stop there. They added a fingerprint reader, two cameras, wireless WAN (via Cingular), an *extremely* bright display (the brightest I've ever seen - even in sunlight), Intel's latest ultra low voltage processor...

But wait, let's roll back the calendar to when Sony really annoyed its VAIO UX customers...

About a year+ ago, they released the UX180 line, which had a maximum of 512MB, and couldn't be upgraded. Still, a lot of people jumped on it. Within about four months, they released the UX280, which went up to 1GB, had a faster processor, faster video, and (I believe) had the same price. Many people were furious - that is, the people who bought the UX180. Wouldn't you be?

Anyway... So here we are in 2007. Althought the UX3X0 line still has a maximum 1GB ram limit, it does the job *really* well. The fingerprint sensor is fantastic. Once you use it, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it. If you use a Blackberry, you'll find that the Blackberry is actually easier than the Sony's keyboard - it's smaller, requiring less thumb travel. However, over time, it will become easier to use. Be sure to grab a Bluetooth mouse, though. Depending on your usage, a small bluetooth keyboard may be a wise choice. Perhaps Bluetooth stereo headphones? All are supported.

Now - on to the Crapware that Sony installs. Here's the big question - On a sub 1 pound PC, do you REALLY need Microsoft SQL Server 2005? Something tells me the answer is.. er... NO. Sony installs a TON of junk, including its media server, which uses SQL Server to store MP3 files and video. But that's the tip of the iceberg. Quickbooks lite (at a not too "lite" 900MB), multiple Cd burning apps, Napster software, and a bevy of rather large neutered applications - happily waiting for a credit card.

A "ultra-micro" system with a 32GB drive ends up with about 10GB free. This is because of the above software (the list above is only a subset), along with the 5GB "Management partition", which is also hidden. Here's another annoyance - the bluetooth stack. Instead of using the native Vista stack (which is *excellent*), they use the awful Toshiba stack, which installs about five services - and still can't pair with standard Bluetooth devices!! You can actually safely uninstall the Toshiba Bluetooth stack, and install ONLY the drivers. Vista will handle the rest. As for the 5GB partition, you can delete it, and extend your C: drive via the disk management console. If you aren't comfortable with this stuff, please backup your data and call Sony to have them walk you through the process. Or... have a qualified PC service technician handle the job.

To deal with all the garbage-ware, I recommend this application:
[...]

It's safe, clean, free for personal use, and does not include spyware, adware, trojans, etc. I am in *no* way related to this software, web site, programmer, etc. It's just a great tool that is updated (like antivirus software) with a signature database of commonly known garbage-ware. With this database, it cleanly removes the garbage.

Anyway, garbage-ware aside, I still give the Sony VGN-UX380N and UX390N systems a five star rating. The power management is excellent. They even provide a VAIO-specific extension to the standard Vista power management (which is already amazing). This supports components in the VAIO that don't exist in most systems (like the stylus reader). Also, there's an HD "3d" shock sensor, which can (supposedly) park the drive immediately before serious impact. Pretty slick.

In short, Sony has packed the latest cutting edge features into this VAIO - like 3d HD protection, power management that goes beyond Vista's extremely granular settings, solid state storage, etc. Many other manufacturers have done this with their laptops, but most laptops don't weigh under a pound.

5 out of 5 stars The UX-380 is the best computer on the market for portability........2007-05-13

My system came with Windows Vista.

Plus -
This computer is SMALL (smallest I have worked with)
Powerful, it keeps up great with the 1.3 processor
4 USB ports (3 in the included base)
Finger print scanner, I use this 40 times a day. I use it to log into the computer, to sign into web pages, for anything requiring a password. It works great.
The WLAN, and WWAN are awesome. They both work great and are dependable.
There are many included programs
I love having both cameras.
The docking station has everything! (that I have needed it for)
The Bluetooth connects with everything!
It comes with voice recognition that really works for once.
The case that it comes with is nice. It has a belt loop and is pretty nice. The extended battery fits with no problem.

Needs work
40G hard drive is about 6 or 8 gigs free when it arrives. Get the 80 or 100
Windows Vista slows this machine down. I suggest XP.
The battery that comes with it has gotten 2 hours max so far
Quality of the cameras are pretty poor inside but with a lot of light the photos come out great.
The speaker does not work very well. Buy headphones.

I bought the GPS, larger battery, and screen protectors

The Bluetooth GPS ROCKS
Totally cordless, Charge and it runs about 10 hours and works great. It locked on to me in Afghanistan

The large battery gets about 5 hours I suggest this to everyone, I don't even use the factory battery anymore

I also bought the screen protectors, these are great for protecting the screen but the stylus really tears them up.

Overall everyone that sees this thing wants one. It works well and does everything I need. The only thing I would change would be to stay with XP. It does not handle the graphics of Vista and dumbed down to look like XP helps but is still to much for this machine.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for super man eyes!.......2007-04-13

The G-Sensor shock protection feature makes your data even less vulnerable to loss or damage. When the built-in 3-D acceleration sensor detects a risky movement like being dropped, the HDD-head will lock up to secure its position and protect the disc from scratching. An intelligent algorithm, unique to VAIO PCs, judges whether or not a movement is risky, activating disk drive protection only when your hardware is at risk.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Too Soon to Tell.......2007-04-01

The text is sharp and clear even at the smallest size. And it has so many features built in. It seems like the perfect solution to having a PDA and a laptop. However, it will be a while before we can determine that for sure. After purchasing the VGN-UX380N my husband decided to upgrade the operating system to Vista Ultimate. After that things started going wrong and after a phone call to Sony we found out that the Ultimate operating system isn't supported because there aren't compatible drivers yet. There was nothing in the documentation to warn us about this. Since the PC doesn't come with a set of Recovery Disks and none were made before the upgrade, we purchased the set. (The upgrade destroyed the VAIO Recovery Center that was on the system initially.) Now we've found out that the only CD/DVD drive that the PC will boot from is the VGP-DDRW4 which we don't have and is rather expensive. We do have another CD/DVD drive that works great for everything else, but it will not boot to the Recovery CDs. We will get that resolved shortly and hopefully begin using the PC for it's intended purpose.

My review isn't to scare anyone away from this device. I think it's a great machine when you realize these initial shortcomings. I just want to warn others who might consider upgrading to Ultimate to hold off until Sony supports it. And, make a set of Recovery Disks as soon as you get the machine up and running.
