If you thought that linux was not for everyone, think again. Microtel has delivered a great system, at an amazing price. Together with Sun's operating system and office suite, it allows everyone to start using Linux without even realizing they're not running Windows.

First, I will talk about the SOFTWARE that comes pre-installed on this system and gives the users (even those without much experience) the look and feel of Windows XP but with linux and open source software.

The operating system: Sun JDS Linux

Sun took the stability of SUSE Enterprise Desktop, removed the KDE bloat, and configured a desktop to please the everyday WinXP users.

Unlike SUSE, the defaults are the BEST-OF-BREED applications: Mozilla as the web browser, Evolution as the e-mail client (that looks and feels very much like Outlook), and all plug-ins pre-configured (including Flash and the latest Java), Acrobat Reader, etc.

In short: you click on a PDF file, acrobat reader 5 for linux opens. You click on a .mp3 file, the file plays. You click on a .DOC (Microsoft Word) document, and StarOffice 7 opens.

Did I mention that for the low price, the full StarOffice 7 is included? It includes a database, thesaurus, clipart and extra fonts, that are not included in the "free" OpenOffice.org program on top of which StarOffice 7 is based.

The desktop has a clean look, only the best of breed apps are included (instead of the confusing dozens in SUSE linux), the fonts are BIG and very readable, even in tiny LCDs present in cheap notebooks.

In short: Sun Java Desktop System is what SUSE linux should have been if configured with the right defaults. The desktop environment is GNOME 2.2, with a polished, clean and attractive look (it is also much faster than KDE).

The hardware: If you buy a "brand name PC" from IBM, Dell, etc or "build your own" from mail-rder parts, in both cases you're likely to find hurdles and problems (for instance, having to configure drivers).

Microtel solves this with a PC with Sun's user-friendly JDS linux pre-installed, with everything working from day one: video, audio, modem, etc. Plus, all needed software is not only installed but pre-configured: web browser, browser plug-ins (including Flash and Java), e-mail software, Sun's StarOffice 7 office suite is included (which can read and write Microsoft Word documents, Excel files, and Powerpoint presentations).

What else can I say... if you were looking for a linux system to give to your son, brother, father, or acquaintance (or why not yourself) and you just want to plug it to the power outlet and never be bothered again, this would be the best option. Note: the amount of memory (RAM) on this configuration is a bit low (256MB is OK, but 512MB or more is better). Other than that, you can't beat the price.
