I got the piece as promised. I loved it's design and features. But just two week later the power supply broke down. Tech support got involve but not working. I couldn't install new power supply. Very difficult to remove & replace power supply in a tiny place. Until now I am still waiting for instruction to send the PC to HP for repair. Not really happy about this...

I like this product because of its size. It is not too big and easily handleable. It has all the features. Most attractive feature is it's built in wireless connection.

First, to the person who was ranting about the rebate, check it out. Amazon has updated the dates so everything should be cool.

I've had the computer for about 3 weeks now. Its fine. I have a powerhouse computer in my home office, but needed something small to stick in the built in desk in my kitchen. Mainly for my kids, but also for me when I don't feel like trotting all the way downstairs. Where else can you get a dual core with a gig of memory, wireless Lan, and all the other usual goodies, for under $500. I've had no problems.

To the person who complained about the computer being slow, just know what you are getting into. This computer does not have the fastest processor or fastest graphics card on the market today. Can you do extensive photo or video editing on this computer? No. Can you play the latest graphic intensive games on this comptuer? No, because the graphics card is puny. Can you do word processing and spreadsheets? Absolutely, with no problem. Can you watch videos or listen to CD's? Yes. Can you surf the internet? Yes. Does the wireless Lan work? No problem whatsoever. Picked up my home network the minute I turned the computer on.

So, don't spend less than $500 and expect to have the latest, fastest and best computer out there. For that, plan on spending around $2000. If you want a very capable, very functional, very stylish, very small, and very inexpensive computer for your kids (or to stick in another room), then this is perfect.

First off, I give the PC unit 5 stars, and I give the Vista software 3 stars. This makes an average of 4 stars.

I purchased this unit from CompUSA about 10 days ago and have nothing bad to say about the unit itself. I purchased a 22" LG LCD monitor for it, and the picture is outstanding! I also purchased the HP Pocket media drive that slips right into its own little slot. The unit recognized it instantly and voila, another 80 Gbytes of drive space. The PC unit is compact, fast, and pulls up my programs immediately. If I take 2 15" laptops and place them on top of each other, that is the size of this unit.

The unit has never locked up on me. I've played CD's and DVD's and they play perfectly. The fan is very quiet, and the unit does not build up much heat at all. It took some fumbling around before I could place my CD's and DVD's in the vertical slot, but after a couple of times, no problem.

I do think the Vista OS needs some tweaking here and there, but, mainly minor stuff. But that's a Microsoft issue, not HP. I've had to upgrade some of my favorite software packages to make them Vista compatible, but they were due for an upgrade anyway. I still have Win XP on my 2 laptops and my older desktop. Other things like MS Office 2002 loads and runs perfectly w/o upgrading to Vista. Vista is not very user friendly when trying to hook it into my wireless home network, and I spent a weekend trying to make it see my other units and the printers via wireless. It's all in how you tweak the firewall. But again that is Microsoft, not HP.

Everything is running smoothly now, and I would not hesitate to recommend this product to anyone.

1 out of 5 stars A True Test of Patience.......2007-06-01

I made the mistake of buying this system (not through Amazon though). From power up to login screen is the best I've experienced, but after that the system runs slower than molassis in the arctic. Programs take between 20 seconds and 8 minutes to launch. And that's just solitaire, hardly a memory hog. I don't expect instant gratification, but when all tasks take minutes to accomplish, it's hardly productive. I'm not a power user or an avid gamer.

It's not unusual to have to power off the system by pulling the power cord. It freezes solid and refuses to respond.

Plus, don't do anything while running virus or anti-spam scanners. It's even slower than normal.

I also own an HP laptop. I will never buy another HP computer again, they are (to keep it clean) worthless. I think their target audience is the elderly who have the patience to wait hours for something to get done.

Wow, this is nice. Right out of the box it works great. Easy to set up. This computer is expandable and HP gives great support. Buy the PMD, this is an extra drive for your computer that is removable. I boutht the 300gb. Enjoy!!!!

I have been an HP fan for years. That said, this computer has given me gray hair in a very short period of time. The computer may be great, but the Vista operating system loaded on it is a piece of junk. Any software you already have won't work, some of your hardware may not work for lack of Vista supported drivers (including some of HP's own equipment, and all the things you were used to with XP now look and work differently. Trying to load the software that came with my HP printer caused my cd/dvd drive to stop working. Buy the computer, but convert it to XP.

I've been using this PC for a couple of weeks now and I enjoy it. It's got plenty of storage space and memory and it seems to start up pretty fast. I was a little frustrated with Vista because some of my software wouldn't work so I had to spend money on upgrades. My Palm software features are limited (a Vista version is do out this summer) and I had to replace my HP 5300C scanner because it was incompatable with Vista. Although these are operating system issues I include them here because this PC comes with Vista. One more complaint: I wish HP shipped this computer with a higher quality keyboard. It seems cheap compared to my 5 year old Compaq keyboard.

After only a month with the A6040n it seems to be performing very well for a sub-thousand dollar PC running a brand new operating system (Vista).

I was forced to buy now because my previous Pentium 4 running XP was either too overloaded with programs and memory-robbing routines, or just old and tired. I tried system fixing software and even reloading XP to no avail.

Since the A6040n isn't loaded down with anywhere near the programs my old PC had, I can't give it an unqualified recommendation, but given the features and the price, PLUS a $75 Amazon rebate on top of HP's $50 rebate, I'm happy and think it is well worth the money.

I am very satisfied with this product. You cannot get a better deal for the money. I am even happy with the Vista operating system. I think that most of the negative comments regarding the Vista operating system are an over-reaction from those unwilling or unable to take the time to learn the nuances of Vista. Although I do agree that the memory needs to be upgraded to take full advantage of Vista. However, that upgrade was not a big expense around $100 to add 2 MB of memory.

I have been using the HP a6000n for about one month and am completely satisfied with my purchase. I use my home system for routine office applications, Websurfing, e-mail, and the like, and this HP model more than fills the bill. My previous computer was a six-year-old Sony Vaio AMD Duron model with Windows ME, which had become antiquated by computing standards. I love Sony for the quality of their design and production, but they seem to have narrowed the focus of their desktop line to costly high-end multimedia systems and completely forsaken the value-priced user.



Back to HP, I was originally going to purchase the a6130n for the 2GB of memory and slightly faster processor, but when Amazon listed the a6000n at 500 bucks delivered (after rebates), I couldn't pass it up. (Kudos to Amazon for attractive pricing and their usual efficient order fulfillment.) After spending just 40 bucks for another 1GB of memory (Corsair VS1GBKIT533D2), I think I got the most bang for my buck. Note that 1GB is just barely adequate to run Vista, but the most memory that 32-bit Vista can use is a little over 3GB, so I would advise that you not overspend here. This computer has four memory slots and comes with two 512MB sticks; I recommend that you simply add a pair of value-line 512MB or 1GB sticks to the existing array and you shouldn't have to shell out over 100 bucks in the process.



I have never been a fan of Windows, but the resource-hogging Vista, in my opinion, with all its drawbacks is still lightyears ahead of ME in speed, efficiency and ease of use. Of course, there are the usual compatibility problems with pre-existing programs, but most of these issues seem to have work-arounds. Vista even has a feature that will attempt to adapt your older apps to the new OS; I used it to load my ancient Wordperfect 9 program, which appears to be running like a charm. (Yes, Virginia, WP9 runs on Vista!)



In sum, this model seems to offer great value. If you're in the market for a new home computer, I highly recommend that you compare the features of the HP a6000n and its brethren models, such as the a6110n and a6130n, before buying any other computer.

I got this PC about a month ago and it is the best I've ever had. I usually get low-end computers and this one is the king of them all. I paid a little over $500 for it and just connected it to my old monitor. This system is ready to use straight out of the box. Even with Windows Vista, it still moves pretty quickly. This PC comes pre-loaded with 1 GB of RAM (2 512 KB sticks) but has four slots. Just for kicks I ordered four 1 GB sticks even though the computer is already pretty quick without it. Also, the seven USB ports are a definite plus. The three USB ports in the front have a cover you can flip to protect the ports while they are not in use. Having the PCI and PCI-e ports in this system was beneficial to me becuase I had a PCI sound card and all of the good video cards these days are PCI-e so this comp allows for the use of both.

Depending on what you are trying to do, this is a quality computer. If you are just planning on using it for daily use then you will more than get your money worth. I will say that I tried to run City of Heroes with the integrated GeForce 6150 that comes with the system and it would not work. I couldn't even see the cursor on my game until I got more RAM. This is a good computer to build on if you are a gamer. The dual processors are more than adequate as long as you don't mind adding a few extra dollars for a new video card and RAM. I only play City of Heroes and City of Villains so I went and got the GeForce 7300 GT from XFX and a 350 watt power supply (the one that comes with the computer is only 300). Add that two the for sticks of RAM I got and a sound card that I took from my old computer. Getting this comp gamer ready cost me between $250 and $300 bucks. If you don't mind doing a little bit of work, you can have a pretty good gaming system for well under $1000.

I have been buying computers since 1982, including desktops, laptops, and more recently for my wife. Each one has worked out of the box. This was the sole exception. The CD/DVD player crashed the system with each CD I tried to play. So after futzing with tech support for hours they finally sent a new unit. It, too, crashed the system with each disk. In the meantime the system simply corrupted itself on a daily basis. The next to go was media files from my hard drive. They, too, would randomly crash the system. Other files I formerly could simply click on now demanded debugging. Then suddenly the mail system decided that certain messages would not be deletable. Ever. I tried MS Vista restore to no avail. Nothing left but "System Recovery," which supposedly backs up new files and programs while restoring all software to its original state. But once in motion it DID NOT allow any backups. The button that would do so stayed shaded. Yet for all that the bugs started to slowly creep back in! This piece of junk goes back to HP!

I actually own a younger version of this, and paid about the same price as this one. I couldn't be happier with Hp's excellent desktops, I use mine (3gz pentium) for everything from music production to film editing (im a film student) and It preforms extremely well. Heck, maby I should upgrade...its not like its all that expensive :)

Anybody thinks the PC is less expensive and a good bargain. For me the biggest investment is your time, not your money. I want to give this product rate 0 start, which is not available.

I could not agree more with the review by D.Alejandro. Same things happened to me. Seems it is not an isolated case. I first ordered A1610N, several days after I got it, screen became only dotted lines. Did several recoveries, no luck, had to return to HP. Thought it was only an isolated case, ordered an A1650. Arrived in Jan. It ran good for several days, then no boot. Had to do recovery three times, it always ran good for several days, then the PC just went on strike, no boot, blank screen nothing. Have to ship it to repair center. Not sure whether they can fix it or not. Just consider the hassel and long hours you spent on this junk. Called tech support, really could not help you in anyway, except thank you for holding the line. Don't know how HP claims it s customer service is one of the best.

Today's HP is no longer the old HP you used to know. I was a loyal customer, my old HP brio PC ran several years without a single problem. Today HP cuts corners to become price competitive. I don't care whether the PC is made in Mexico, or the support call center in india as long as it can provide quality services and products. Clearly HP can not do it. I should have given Dell a serious consideration. NO HP products any more!

I love this computer! My dad bought it to replace our old slow computer and it's awesome! The colors are vivid and the Media Center is excellent - I have used it to make horrible pictures look beautiful. It's super fast. This is, in my opinion, the best computer in our home. Please note that we own a Mac and this computer. I regularly use both and this computer is far superior. I can't wait for our free upgrade to Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium to come in the mail because once we install it our computer will be even better (currently I don't think that's possible).

Buy this computer! You will not regret it! ; )

Could not get any sound from computer after hours spend with tech support online chat (that is the only option since there is no phone number for support!). I sent it back to HP and they supposedly repaired it but the problem remained. Fortunately Amazon took this back. It was my first and last experience with an HP Computer.

It's a good deal. It would have been impossible to build a system with similar specs for the money. The wireless KB/Mouse works very well. The keyboard is excessively noisy though.

That said, there are a few other problems. The integrated Video is very, very weak. But that's OK. I realized that as I ordered it and ordered an PNY nVidia 7900 GS 256 MB PCI-E card at the same time. Once installed and decent speakers and monitor are attached it's a really good gaming rig.

Vista. Ughh. Not ready for prime time. Looking forward to Service Packs One and Two. Quite quickly Vista stopped autoplaying CD/DVD media and had to be restored. Microsoft has yet to release an Autoplay repair tool for Vista.

The usual OEM bloatware comes pre-installed. Get rid of it is my advice.

    This will be brief, as I'd like to limit the amount of time I've wasted as a result of buying this dog. I've had quite a few problems with mine, the latest of which is a DVD drive which falls out of DMA mode and thus can't playback DVDs properly. This is a cheap, consumerish machine, not something you should trust your media and data to. The included graphics processor is too weak to even handle high definition video playback.

    I bought the a1230n for about 875.00 (not incl. monitor) in Sept '05. I give it a hlaf notch above mediocre. Solid cabinet, separare DVD/CD drive bays, handy audio jacks in the front, 4 USB jacks. MD processor is suppose to be better for multi-media.. hmmm. Replaced the chinsey keyboard/mouse included in the package. I grew up in HP territory, the once thriving giant HP comlex is now a ghost town. Almost all design/assebly is outsourced now, this unit assembled in China. Whould I buy it again knowing what I know now ... naah.

    My friend bought this computer from BestBuy, a big electronics retailer. It had a good price for what it had and it came with a free monitor.

    The hard drive is 200 GB, this is a lot of power. Of course every manufacture rounds it, it probably has 190 GB. Still, this is not a small hard drive. You can store a lot of stuff on this thing, music, movies, games, documents, or anything with ease.

    The processor is an AMD Athlon 64 3700+ processor. Overall, AMD processors are a problem with Windows computers, I'm not sure why this is true, but it is so. I've had a few lock-ups, mainly on Windows Media Player 10, even though it's a memory stealing program, 1 GB and a 3700+ processor, I expected more. I think an Intel Inside Pentium 4 D would've worked fine.

    The CD drive with this thing is packed with features. You can pretty much do anything with CDs. It can write any CDs you can want. It also has a DVD/DVD-RW, which will play and burn DVDs. It also has HP's lightscribe, which is a pretty neat feature that will write on the top of your CDs.

    The keyboard is a basic one with internet features. It is not wireless but what CAN you expect. The mouse is a basic wired scroll mouse.

    The graphics are powered by the ATI Radeon XPress 200M IGP, a pretty average graphics set, usually Nvidia's are sharper. It should work for most movies and video games but if your looking for the best graphics chip around look elsewhere.

    It also has a memory card reader which will read any kind of memory card avaliable today.

    If your buying this for the Media Center, I'd pass. It's honestly not anything big and you can do most of it on Windows Media Player 10.

    One thing that sucks about it is that it freezes a LOT, especially on Windows Media Player 10. I've got a lot of errors and waiting while using it.

    Overall, it's OK for the money.

    HP has good reliable pcs which is saying a lot considering the amount of junk out there. Still with basic cpus selling under $400 I expect a lot more for the extra dough. The dvd drive can be testy, meaning it may or not work. I've had trouble w/ other drives and disk burning hardware is not as reliable as the old floppy drives. The speed seems fine and I didn't experience slow down on word processing. I like to edit video so the memory and processing have proved to be sufficient. It isn't a super computer but it does the job.

    [...]It came with a 17" flat panel monitor, printer, and everything else that normally comes in a bundle. I've had some issues with performance while running multiple programs, but after I installed a 256mb graphics card it freed up alot of main memory and took alot of stress off of the cpu. It eliminated almost all of the issues i've had with it and it runs all of the newest games with ease now. I recommend this computer to anyone looking for good performance at a low price.
