Minolta's DiMAGE Scan Dual IV provides a high-quality 35mm film, slide, and APS film scanning solution. Scanning is achieved using the accompanying film and slide holders (APS film holder must be purchased separately), delivering up to 3,200 dpi resolution. Ideal for serious photo enthusiasts and professionals alike, the DiMAGE Scan Dual IV offers Pixel Polish, Auto Dust Brush, and Grain Dissolver to correct and enhance your photo images.
Pixel Polish restores film images that have faded over time as well as those that suffer from light-distortion (under-exposure, backlighting, and so on). Auto Dust Brush automatically cleans any dust or lint that may have been scanned with your film. It can also be used manually as a separate plug-in with certain Photoshop versions to give you more precise control of removal parameters and to let you preview results. Grain Dissolver removes excess grain that may be visible when scanning high-speed film or that may appear in images scanned at very high resolutions.
The DiMAGE Scan Dual IV offers fast USB 2.0 connectivity for both PC and Mac users. It can perform batch scanning (up to six filmstrip frames or four mounted slides) or multi-sampling (2x, 4x, 8x, 16x), and lets you control a large number of factors such as tone curve, histogram, sharpness, brightness, exposure, and color balance. The system comes with Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent for what it does, when it does it.......2007-05-31
I experimented with manual image correction, but in the end found the automated settings to work well. It was more important to me to be able to load the tray, pop it in, click "go", and walk away. I like the batch function, that is smart enough to assign filenames based on what already exists in a directory. Thus, I could designate my files by DATE-OCCASION-FILM_ROLL_#-NEGATIVE_#. This is really nice, because then I can go back and trace a specific scanned image to a specific negative frame.
This last bit is important because of dust and such, which inevitably make their way into some scans.
The only downside I must mention is that when the unit arrived, the power supply was defective. Because I have a background in electronics, I was able to quickly deduce the power supply was at fault and not the unit. Because I was very busy, I set the unit aside and didn't file a complaint with the manufacturer - and it sounds like were I to do so, I would have had trouble anyhow, considering their buyout by Sony. When I got around to desiring to use the unit, I found another 24VDC power supply in the garage and rewired it to work with the unit. It has worked fine ever since.
I have read enough reviews here to see there is a big problem with failed power supplies. So, if your unit does not at all power up, I'd suggest you mention this issue to tech support.
Oh yes, one more caveat: infrequently, the tray gets stuck and the motor makes a struggling sound. It is obvious. I have found if I nudge the tray inward slightly, it will help the motor pull past whatever slight obstruction it is encountering. It is a finesse move and not often encountered. My recommendation would be to err on being gentle with the unit, as it's a precision instrument.

Fantastic for converting your old negatives and slides.......2007-01-06
Works just like it should!!.......2006-09-29
The quality and speed are better than I expected.
If you are familiar with photo editing, you should have no problem using the utilities that come with the scanner. The batch scanning feature and pre-set jobs make scanning that much easier.
Quirky, inferior, and not very durable... but priced okay.......2006-06-28
When it's working properly, this is a decent scanner. Scans are relatively quick, even at full resolution, and colors seem to be accurate. The software is also very easy to use and is loaded with nifty features.
Now for some slightly worse news...
The most serious problem with this machine is that it's incredibly sensitive to dust. I clean my slides and negatives meticulously and the scans still appear covered with specks. The same negatives and slides are nearly spotless when scanned with another film scanner. I tried using the "auto dust brush" feature, but it does virtually nothing except soften the image. This makes it even more difficult to make sharp prints, given the already lower resolution of this machine vs. competing scanners.
The machine itself can also be a bit finicky, but once you understand how to use it that's not really a problem. For best results, wait for the software to prompt you, and then follow its instructions to the letter, or else you'll be in for a headache.
Now for the bad news...
Unfortunately, after a short while using this machine I started to notice the appearance of color banding on the scans. I would describe it as faint magenta-colored bars running horizontally across the image. It's not glaring, but it's bad enough that I would consider the scans unusable. The strange thing is that it doesn't always happen, but it's not much fun scanning the same negative four times to get a decent result.
At first, I assumed there was something wrong with the negatives; however, I could see no evidence of banding on the prints that came from the lab. I then started searching the web to see if anyone else had this banding issue, and it didn't take me long to find out that it's a known problem with this machine. At least three other reviewers here on Amazon write about banding. If you don't take my word for it, make sure you read all of the other reviews.
Based on my experience, I'm afraid I can't recommend this machine. However, if you manage to get one without the banding issue, and can live with the issues I've mentioned, then you'll probably be satisfied with it. Mind you, not as satisfied as you'd be with the pricey Nikon Coolscan V, or even the cheaper Microtek Artixscan and Polaroid Sprintscan.
