See Through Trees!.......2007-06-05
Oldgrowth Douglas-fir forest, trees 200 ft tall, 90% canopy closure - GPS gets 8 satellites and has my position to 10 m accuracy in about a minute.
Doghair western hemlock forest 100% canopy closure, need a flash to take pictures at noon on a cloudless day. GPS gets 7 satellites and has my position to 10 m accuracy in a little under two minutes.
Dense alder-maple forest at the bottom of a ravine with 70% sideslopes. 95% canopy closure. GPS gets 6 satellites and has my position to 10 m accuracy in about a minute. I put the GPS in the top pocket of my backpack and thrash through the ravine for 3 hours. Subsequent download indicates GPS never lost my position and has almost no random walk component to the trackpoint record.
In short, the SiRF set delivers performance that I could not achieve using a $14,000 Trimble setup three years ago. GPS is finally into the woods. I wonder how it would work in a cave???
By the way - in other respects it's pretty much what you expect of a Garmin GPS, which means great hardware and a pretty good user interface, coupled with crappy software that only runs on Windows. At least you can use Mapsource to save the tracks, routes and waypoints as GPX files which you can then view on Google Earth.
Great GPS.......2007-05-11
Garmin GPSMap 60Cx Handheld GPS Navigator.......2007-05-09
1) Found the GPS works well.
2) It is quick and has a nice and useful set of features.
3) The interface is easy to use and learn
4) Loading the software (MapSource) was easy and the GPS interfaced with my PC with no hitch
5) Transferring data between the GPS and PC was easy and effective.
6) I particularly like the large screen and the large fonts and this was why I bought this unit
7) On the whole I am pleased with my purchase
The Bad
1) MapSource, the software supplied with the GPS did have a glitch with upgrading from the internet. Each time I tried to upgrade the software, a fatal error occurred. Garmin could not assist unless I telephoned a Garmin technician. This remains a problem.
2) Purchasing road map data for South Africa has proved to be very expensive.
GPSmap 60Cx : FANTASTIC.......2007-04-27
Just got my 60Cx yesterday. Spent today playing with it and doing a little geocaching. The display screen is beautiful and a good size, too. Accuracy? I almost tripped over one cache today, and the WAAS was OFF!!! I really can't see what the GPS compass in the GPSmap 60Csx would do for me that the Cx doesn't!!
Downloading waypoints is a snap with the various geocaching applications out there. It literally took me a whole 3 minutes to load 40-50 caches / waypoints (using the USB port).
I would absolutely buy another one of these. Thank you, AMAZON, for making the buying and package tracking as painless as it was. Great job and thanks! I'd definitely buy another Garmin and would buy from Amazon again!

Unclear instructions & unavailable service.......2007-03-17
Piece of JUNK!.......2007-03-01
I would have rated it ZERO stars if the option had been available. I will NEVER buy anything from Garmin again!
I've contacted Garmin NUMEROUS times and they are no help at all - and have completely ignored me for the past month or so.
Garmin GPSmap 60...better than I'd hoped.......2006-02-28
So I picked up a GPSmap 60 and never looked back. The ability to load custom maps of certain area's was a very nice perk, but even the base map was very good for what I was doing.
As other reviewers have noted, it gets a good solid lock in the worst conditions (heavy tree cover, clouds, rain, and indoors) though sometimes the accuracy does degrade beyond what it would lead you to believe. As an example, with this unit I can get a four or five satellite lock, with an listed accuracy of under twenty feet, the reality is that the accuracy is closer to fifty or sixty feet...but at least I have a lock when most others don't.
This is a very solid unit, it feels like it was made for use and abuse. And this is one area where I was slightly disappointed in the unit. It feels rugged, but it only handled about 2000 miles of vibration from being attached to the motorcycle handlebars before the contacts in the batter compartment had to be "adjusted" to remain in contact with the batteries.
Which brings up another point. I don't even bother with rechargeable batteries in this beast anymore. It drains them quickly when compared with non-rechargeable batteries.
Over all I highly recommend this system, even over the color versions that are out. At this price its hard to beat in terms of quality and features.
Garmin GPSMap 60 more than I expected........2006-02-24
Although the map sourse products are quite expensive and I haven't yet purchased any I am anxious to eventually buy and use them. I am yet a novice with the unit I have, but it is easy to follow the instructions with it and if you don't know a thing about navagiting you will be adding way points and finding them in a couple quick practice sessions.
I am happy I bought the Garmin. I'm sure other units are just as good, but I liked everything I read about this one.
Happy hiking and hunting.
GPSMap 60 - Worth my money.......2006-02-22
Although I have yet to put this unit through its paces with regards to trekking in rough weather, I have no doubt that it will live up to its expectations. Construction is rugged and fits well in my hand.
It gets the job done quite well with easy to use menus. This is not to say don't read the manual. Please do read the manual as it will help you understand the unit better but even without opening the manual, I was able to operate the unit and get it to work for me quite well.
Value for money? I would say yes. If you don't need the color or electronic compass and a few other features that makes little difference but cost an arm and a leg.
Interfacing to the PC is wery easy and I have been able to upload my waypoints and tracks to GoogleEarth as well (if i may sidetrack, this give a whole new perspective to cool!)

Good product for the price.......2007-05-24
At the begginig I tought buying a more specialized product, but this one is great for the price.
Getting the sattelites is not that fast but I'm not bothered on waiting 3 minutes, sometimes it loose reception if the woods are to dense but as soon as I can see the sky, reception comes back.
Anyway for my first GPS its a great buy!!
Im going out walking and riding my bike even more now that I can actually see wher I've been in Google earth.
Garmin GPS.......2007-02-20
Good BASIC GPS.......2007-01-22
4 Stars because of the memory limitations. If that is not an issue for you, then 4.5 stars.
Good upgrade over the eTrex.......2006-04-17
- the screen is much sharper and easier to read
- the device's softwre is more sophisticated; you can store much more information about each waypoint
- the USB connection is really handy. Downloading waypoint information from the computer beats entering it by hand on the eTrex!
- this unit is easier to use
Don't expect much from its built-in basemap; it has dots for cities, and that's it (meaning it's basically useless, unless you have just arrived from another planet).
The biggest disadvantage to this unit is that Garmin has a proprietary interface, so it won't speak to mapping software which is expecting a standard NMEA serial-port interface. Fransom GpsGate handles the translation, though, and it's not particularly expensive.
Note: I am not affiliated with Fransom in any way.
Good solid unit.......2006-04-16

Excellent Unit.......2007-01-14
two models and pack them with features like "picture viewing", that's
right now how is that needed in a GPS? Are you going to the photomat or something?
This unit is excellent. I've used it hiking and riding my ATV. This unit
just has everything an amature hiker/explorer could want. It's easy to
use, just take a few minutes and go through the menus. It's great easy
icons with text describing each one, and the screen is nice and easy to
see. And having the feautre of backtracking where you tell the unit to
take you back the way you came and you can see it clearly on the map
displayed on the screen is fantastic.
Overall excellent purchase, and I enjoy it everytime I use it.

Loved it before I even got it.......2006-06-14
The unit performs flawlessly. I even can get a fairly good position - in my office with no windows! The quadrifilar helix antenna really is the key to this GPSr's ability to get fast, accurate fixes even under dense coverage. I don't live in an extremely dense urban area with tall buildings, so I cannot attest to its use in that environment. I have noticed (and read somewhere, if I recall) that the GPS receives best in the vertical position. On its side or holding screen up, the signal degrades. The helicoil antenna must be polarized to be held vertically.
All in all, it's a great unit for the price, and still worth the purchase even though it is being outdated by newer models.
