5 out of 5 stars A step up.......2007-06-21

I had a Lorence H2O GPS prior to the purchase of the Garmin GPSMAP 60cs. I have nothing negative to say about that unit and will keep it as an additional or second unit. It is a fine unit for the money. The Garmin 60CX is a big step up if you care to spend the extra cash and you get a lot for that extra. Turn-by-turn, color, twice the battery life, and that sweet SurFer board (or however its called) that performs in areas where I used to have an error rate in the hundreds and now in the tens. My first unit needed to be by the car window to get a lock. This Garmin doesn't seem to care where it sits in the car. The City Navigator software is a bit pricy to get functional street detail, but given the turn-by-turn function of the unit, I also have no problems buying it so the unit reaches full potential. If you want a solid unit, there are others out there that do fine. If you want the best you can get in a hand held, check this one out.

4 out of 5 stars See Through Trees!.......2007-06-05

The SiRF chipset in this baby is amazing. I've been using it for a week now and here are some examples:

Oldgrowth Douglas-fir forest, trees 200 ft tall, 90% canopy closure - GPS gets 8 satellites and has my position to 10 m accuracy in about a minute.

Doghair western hemlock forest 100% canopy closure, need a flash to take pictures at noon on a cloudless day. GPS gets 7 satellites and has my position to 10 m accuracy in a little under two minutes.

Dense alder-maple forest at the bottom of a ravine with 70% sideslopes. 95% canopy closure. GPS gets 6 satellites and has my position to 10 m accuracy in about a minute. I put the GPS in the top pocket of my backpack and thrash through the ravine for 3 hours. Subsequent download indicates GPS never lost my position and has almost no random walk component to the trackpoint record.

In short, the SiRF set delivers performance that I could not achieve using a $14,000 Trimble setup three years ago. GPS is finally into the woods. I wonder how it would work in a cave???

By the way - in other respects it's pretty much what you expect of a Garmin GPS, which means great hardware and a pretty good user interface, coupled with crappy software that only runs on Windows. At least you can use Mapsource to save the tracks, routes and waypoints as GPX files which you can then view on Google Earth.

5 out of 5 stars Great GPS.......2007-05-11

I have been really happy with this GPS. I originally purchased the Etrex Legend Cx, but found that it lost signal too often under dense tree canopies that I find myself all too often under while hiking in Georgia. But I have not that that problem with the 60Cx. It has kept strong signal even under dense canopy. I now also have the Garmin map software, and use the GPS in my car to navigate around. With the windshield suction mount, I am able to easily use it to get around the city, and have found it pretty accurate.

4 out of 5 stars Garmin GPSMap 60Cx Handheld GPS Navigator.......2007-05-09

The Good
1) Found the GPS works well.
2) It is quick and has a nice and useful set of features.
3) The interface is easy to use and learn
4) Loading the software (MapSource) was easy and the GPS interfaced with my PC with no hitch
5) Transferring data between the GPS and PC was easy and effective.
6) I particularly like the large screen and the large fonts and this was why I bought this unit
7) On the whole I am pleased with my purchase

The Bad
1) MapSource, the software supplied with the GPS did have a glitch with upgrading from the internet. Each time I tried to upgrade the software, a fatal error occurred. Garmin could not assist unless I telephoned a Garmin technician. This remains a problem.
2) Purchasing road map data for South Africa has proved to be very expensive.

5 out of 5 stars GPSmap 60Cx : FANTASTIC.......2007-04-27

Firstly, I labored long and hard deciding between the GPSmap 60Cx and the GPSmap 60Csx... I mean WEEKS!!! The only difference between the two is minimal (just a GPS compass and barometric altimeter).

Just got my 60Cx yesterday. Spent today playing with it and doing a little geocaching. The display screen is beautiful and a good size, too. Accuracy? I almost tripped over one cache today, and the WAAS was OFF!!! I really can't see what the GPS compass in the GPSmap 60Csx would do for me that the Cx doesn't!!

Downloading waypoints is a snap with the various geocaching applications out there. It literally took me a whole 3 minutes to load 40-50 caches / waypoints (using the USB port).

I would absolutely buy another one of these. Thank you, AMAZON, for making the buying and package tracking as painless as it was. Great job and thanks! I'd definitely buy another Garmin and would buy from Amazon again!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Unclear instructions & unavailable service.......2007-03-17

I returned this product for a full refund due to unclear instructions and no repsonse from customer service. The instructions provided in the owner's manual on entering bearing and distance to find a new waypoint were unclear. I was unable to reach the Garmin customer service via email (maybe their server was down) or by phone. I tried to phone them 2 or 3 times during business hours and was unsuccessful in reaching a person. I wanted to enter coordinates, latitude and longitude, to find a new location and was disappointed that I never found out if this product could do this or not. Also, I was unable to enter a bearing and a distance to find a new location.

1 out of 5 stars Piece of JUNK!.......2007-03-01

The maps that come with this unit are wortless. If you want good maps, be prepared to shell out $100. My biggest gripe is that my GPS WILL NOT talk to my computer! That makes it IMPOSSIBLE to load my $100 maps. I tried to connect to both of my PCs at home AND my PC at work. All came up with the same message - USB Device Not Recognized. My friend in Utah has the same problem - and a bad temper. He threw his Garmin against the wall and killed it. He bought a Magellan and is very happy with it.

I would have rated it ZERO stars if the option had been available. I will NEVER buy anything from Garmin again!

I've contacted Garmin NUMEROUS times and they are no help at all - and have completely ignored me for the past month or so.

4 out of 5 stars Garmin GPSmap 60...better than I'd hoped.......2006-02-28

Last year I did a motorcycle trip from Kennedy Space Center in Florida to Edwards Air Force Base in California. Along the way I planned stops at every NASA related site I could think of and in preparation for that trip I purchased a Garmin eTrex Legend. After a few days of playing around with it, it quickly became apparent that while the Legend is a nice little unit, it was woefully inadequate for my needs.

So I picked up a GPSmap 60 and never looked back. The ability to load custom maps of certain area's was a very nice perk, but even the base map was very good for what I was doing.

As other reviewers have noted, it gets a good solid lock in the worst conditions (heavy tree cover, clouds, rain, and indoors) though sometimes the accuracy does degrade beyond what it would lead you to believe. As an example, with this unit I can get a four or five satellite lock, with an listed accuracy of under twenty feet, the reality is that the accuracy is closer to fifty or sixty feet...but at least I have a lock when most others don't.

This is a very solid unit, it feels like it was made for use and abuse. And this is one area where I was slightly disappointed in the unit. It feels rugged, but it only handled about 2000 miles of vibration from being attached to the motorcycle handlebars before the contacts in the batter compartment had to be "adjusted" to remain in contact with the batteries.

Which brings up another point. I don't even bother with rechargeable batteries in this beast anymore. It drains them quickly when compared with non-rechargeable batteries.

Over all I highly recommend this system, even over the color versions that are out. At this price its hard to beat in terms of quality and features.

5 out of 5 stars Garmin GPSMap 60 more than I expected........2006-02-24

I am thourghly thrilled with my purchase. This little unit does way more than I hoped for. I am just looking for excuses to do some interesting treasure hunting and exploring with it on my side.

Although the map sourse products are quite expensive and I haven't yet purchased any I am anxious to eventually buy and use them. I am yet a novice with the unit I have, but it is easy to follow the instructions with it and if you don't know a thing about navagiting you will be adding way points and finding them in a couple quick practice sessions.

I am happy I bought the Garmin. I'm sure other units are just as good, but I liked everything I read about this one.

Happy hiking and hunting.

4 out of 5 stars GPSMap 60 - Worth my money.......2006-02-22

This is my first GPS unit and although I have no other experience with other devices, this is purely my personal opinion.

Although I have yet to put this unit through its paces with regards to trekking in rough weather, I have no doubt that it will live up to its expectations. Construction is rugged and fits well in my hand.

It gets the job done quite well with easy to use menus. This is not to say don't read the manual. Please do read the manual as it will help you understand the unit better but even without opening the manual, I was able to operate the unit and get it to work for me quite well.

Value for money? I would say yes. If you don't need the color or electronic compass and a few other features that makes little difference but cost an arm and a leg.

Interfacing to the PC is wery easy and I have been able to upload my waypoints and tracks to GoogleEarth as well (if i may sidetrack, this give a whole new perspective to cool!)

Other features include course and speed filtering; built-in celestial tables for best times to fish and hunt (plus sun and moon calculations); an alarm clock wake-up and stop watch; audible alarms for anchor drag, arrival, off-course, and proximity waypoint; and a geocaching navigation mode. Navigation instructions can be shared with repeaters, plotters, and autopilots using NMEA protocols through the serial port.

The GPS 60's rugged, fully gasketed case is waterproof to IEC 60529 IPX7 standards, meaning it's submersible in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes. The device derives up to 28 hours battery life using 2 AA batteries (not included).

5 out of 5 stars Good product for the price.......2007-05-24

This is my first GPS device, we started looking at different devices to track or mountainbiking rides.
At the begginig I tought buying a more specialized product, but this one is great for the price.
Getting the sattelites is not that fast but I'm not bothered on waiting 3 minutes, sometimes it loose reception if the woods are to dense but as soon as I can see the sky, reception comes back.
Anyway for my first GPS its a great buy!!
Im going out walking and riding my bike even more now that I can actually see wher I've been in Google earth.

4 out of 5 stars Garmin GPS.......2007-02-20

Nice unit but it's for field use only. No road maps. Works good for GeoCash, or hunting and fishing.

4 out of 5 stars Good BASIC GPS.......2007-01-22

This is a good, but higher level basic GPS. Picks up satelites reasonably well, except in heavier tree cover. Clear and readable display. The unit performs as advertised. What I don't like about it is the 1MB memory limitation. I'm interested in downloading National Park topo maps and the 1MB memory limits me to one quadrant in the typical western US MapSource Western National Parks. If your one day trail spans more than one map grid or if you plan a multiday hike you are out of luck. I'm not a geocacher, so I was looking for the basics -- altitude, direction, track some of my way points. The maps was a nice to have. But once I started playing with them, I liked them and wanted to use them more. That's when I ran into the head room issue. So I upgraded to the GPSMap 60CSx -- more money than I intended to spend, but....
4 Stars because of the memory limitations. If that is not an issue for you, then 4.5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Good upgrade over the eTrex.......2006-04-17

We had an eTrex, which my clumsiness sent to the bottom of a creek, never to be seen again. I like this unit a lot more than the eTrex:
- the screen is much sharper and easier to read
- the device's softwre is more sophisticated; you can store much more information about each waypoint
- the USB connection is really handy. Downloading waypoint information from the computer beats entering it by hand on the eTrex!
- this unit is easier to use
Don't expect much from its built-in basemap; it has dots for cities, and that's it (meaning it's basically useless, unless you have just arrived from another planet).

The biggest disadvantage to this unit is that Garmin has a proprietary interface, so it won't speak to mapping software which is expecting a standard NMEA serial-port interface. Fransom GpsGate handles the translation, though, and it's not particularly expensive.

Note: I am not affiliated with Fransom in any way.

4 out of 5 stars Good solid unit.......2006-04-16

Nice unit, locks on fast and keeps the signal, it even worked inside my house. The base map that is loaded isn't much and only has some cities. The Garmin web sites indicate a "Marine Data Base" is loaded but I can't find it and we have a number of buoys near our house. It does have larger cities loaded. The Trip and Waypoint Manager software is pretty weak and I had problems getting it to load on my XP machine. Good crisp display and many options for the displays. I upgraded from an old Garmin and I would recommend this unit for a non-mapping use.

The GPSMap 60CS packs GPS navigation into a compact, waterproof device. View larger.
The GPSMap 60CS adds two premium features to the basic design of the less expensive 60C model: an electronic compass and a barometric altimeter, both crucial for highland adventures. These sensors, when combined with GPS technology, provide enhanced bearing and elevation readings. A barometric sensor with automatic pressure readings allows you to view changes in pressure for a set period of time. With the elevation computer, you can find current elevation, ascent/descent rate, minimum and maximum elevation, total ascent and descent, and average and maximum ascent and descent rate. The trip computer provides odometer, stopped time, moving average, overall average, total time, max speed, and more.

The WAAS GPS receiver has an accuracy of 10 feet in North America. With the 50 reversible routes, 10,000 track points, and 500 waypoints, you're sure to have enough tools to find your way. A fast processor allows the 60CS to provide quick auto-routing, turn-by-turn directions, and audio alerts when the unit uses optional MapSource software, which can be stored on the 56 MB of internal memory. Downloading information is quick with the USB or serial port interfaces. By using the dedicated serial port, the GPSMap 60CS can share navigation instructions with repeaters, plotters, and autopilots. The four-position rocker pad and dedicated high-use buttons make navigating through the unit's features easy, even when your fingers are cold or wet.

The GPSMap 60CS is also packed with some extra fun features. An integrated outdoor calendar provides ideal hunting and fishing times, plus moon rise/set/location information. There is a dedicated geocaching mode for those of you into the popular, GPS community treasure hunt game. And finally, there are indoor/outdoor GPS games to help you and your friends enjoy the outdoors.

Garmin produces some key accessories for the 60CS. If you'll be on the road, Garmin's U.S. topographical MapSource CD-ROM provides the most detailed maps available. Or, for a combination of detailed U.S. maps and a car kit for mounting and powering your GPS, there's an automotive accessory pack for North America.

5 out of 5 stars Does what it should do!.......2007-05-09

Good product. Updates now available for Mac users also online. I like this one, better battery life than some of the newer ones. No SD card slot.

5 out of 5 stars The Best GPS Unit.......2007-04-18

This GPS is great. A color screen is a must and we have need no problems viewing the screening in direct sunlight. This unit is very durable too with a sporty look. The best part you can take it everywhere (hiking, biking, walking, running, even on trips). Money Well Spent!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great for Geo Cashing.......2007-02-17

A very accurate GPS and works everywhere, also a great tool for Geo Cashing

3 out of 5 stars Just don't trust it on the road.......2006-11-13

Nice enough for the trail when you're on foot and not depending on it to tell you how to get somewhere. But it has turned me the wrong way on the road more times than not, one time it told me to turn right when the route it was displaying turned right.

Also its plug locations are just plain stupid. You may want to pop for a bracket if you do use it in the car.

Otherwise the software is quirky and the maps quite expensive.

5 out of 5 stars Delivered the goods.......2006-11-10

I purchased my first GPS unit and I am very satisfied. I read many reviews, and researched about a half a dozen candidates before I settled in on the GPSMAP CS. When I bought it, I knew that it was being replaced with a more expensive unit that had a removable SD chip, but I did not need that feature, as the unit had 56 MB on internal memory, plenty for my needs. I bought the unit basically for Geocaching, and it has performed as expected and I would recommend it, or it's new, more expensive upgrade, to anyone who wants a unit that is relatively easy to use. The car mount is a little tricky, but it also performs well, once mastered. You have to attach the external power cord, if you are conserving batteries, before you put the unit in the car mount. Sort of clunky, but not so much as to be a problem.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Unit.......2007-01-14

Garmin has always been #1 in the GPS market. The other guys, have one or
two models and pack them with features like "picture viewing", that's
right now how is that needed in a GPS? Are you going to the photomat or something?

This unit is excellent. I've used it hiking and riding my ATV. This unit
just has everything an amature hiker/explorer could want. It's easy to
use, just take a few minutes and go through the menus. It's great easy
icons with text describing each one, and the screen is nice and easy to
see. And having the feautre of backtracking where you tell the unit to
take you back the way you came and you can see it clearly on the map
displayed on the screen is fantastic.

Overall excellent purchase, and I enjoy it everytime I use it.

      4 out of 5 stars Garmin GPS.......2007-01-09

I have been using this item nearly everyday for the past two months. It is a nice unit but has a few flaws. When walking with it and having it set to "track up" (point the direction you are going instead of always pointing north on the map) it doesn't always have you tracked up. I have had the unit turn off on me a few time for no reason and just little hick-ups a few times. Other then all that I wish I had purchased an upgraded model with larger internal memory as I like to have all the geocaches in my area on there (i can put 1000 on there right now)

      3 out of 5 stars Incompatible with 64-bit XP.......2006-09-06

If your using a 64 bit OS you will not be able to download maps to unit until Garmin provides driver support. Other then this it's a great product!

4 out of 5 stars Garmin GPSMap 60cs.......2006-07-20

This GPS is a pretty good deal for the money. From an operational standpoint, it works well. It is apparent though, this is really all about being portable, the screen is too small for good marine or car use. For my use, mostly marine, I set a lot of waypoints and scrolling on this tiny of a screen is just lame. Not any fault of the unit I know, just something to think about.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it before I even got it.......2006-06-14

I had read quite a few of the online reviews for this GPSr and realized there wasn't much negative about it. I was right, and I think I made a good investment. Although this model has been updated with an expandable, this one I found new for under $300 and it does the trick for what I need.

The unit performs flawlessly. I even can get a fairly good position - in my office with no windows! The quadrifilar helix antenna really is the key to this GPSr's ability to get fast, accurate fixes even under dense coverage. I don't live in an extremely dense urban area with tall buildings, so I cannot attest to its use in that environment. I have noticed (and read somewhere, if I recall) that the GPS receives best in the vertical position. On its side or holding screen up, the signal degrades. The helicoil antenna must be polarized to be held vertically.

All in all, it's a great unit for the price, and still worth the purchase even though it is being outdated by newer models.
