The GPSMap 60CS adds two premium features to the basic design of the less expensive 60C model: an electronic compass and a barometric altimeter, both crucial for highland adventures. These sensors, when combined with GPS technology, provide enhanced bearing and elevation readings. A barometric sensor with automatic pressure readings allows you to view changes in pressure for a set period of time. With the elevation computer, you can find current elevation, ascent/descent rate, minimum and maximum elevation, total ascent and descent, and average and maximum ascent and descent rate. The trip computer provides odometer, stopped time, moving average, overall average, total time, max speed, and more.

The WAAS GPS receiver has an accuracy of 10 feet in North America. With the 50 reversible routes, 10,000 track points, and 1,000 waypoints, you're sure to have enough tools to find your way. A fast processor allows the 60CS to provide quick auto-routing, turn-by-turn directions, and audio alerts when the unit uses optional MapSource software, which can be stored on the 56 MB of internal memory. Downloading information is quick with the USB or serial port interfaces. By using the dedicated serial port, the GPSMap 60CS can share navigation instructions with repeaters, plotters, and autopilots. The four-position rocker pad and dedicated high-use buttons make navigating through the unit's features easy, even when your fingers are cold or wet.

The GPSMap 60CS is also packed with some extra fun features. An integrated outdoor calendar provides ideal hunting and fishing times, plus moon rise/set/location information. There is a dedicated geocaching mode for those of you into the popular, GPS community treasure hunt game. You can use the 60CSx's memory card slot with preprogrammed microSD cards from Garmin (sold separately) that provide topographic maps, city streets, and nautical charts. In fact, the unit is compatible with most Garmin MapSource products including BlueChart, City Navigator, U.S. Topo 24K, and U.S. Topo and Recreational Lakes with Fishing Hot Spots. The unit comes preloaded with an Americas autoroute basemap that provides automatic routing capabilities including highways, exits, and tide data. There's also a preloaded marine point database. The 60CSx's 2.6-inch, 256-color TFT color display is designed to present mapping and trip information clearly and accurately in any lighting conditions. Plus, the case is lightweight, rugged, and water resistant to IEC 60529 IPX7 standards (can be submerged in one meter of water for 30 minutes). When using two AA alkaline batteries, you'll get up to 20 hours of battery life from the unit. The unit's barometric altimeter system features automatic pressure trend recording while providing current elevation, ascent/descent rate, minimum/maximum elevation, total ascent and descent, and average and maximum ascent and descent rate. Meanwhile, the electronic compass allows you to get accurate headings while standing still.

Not As Good As It Seems.......2007-07-09

I recently purchased this item under the impression that it is a top notch product. While it is impressive in the number of features, the signal strength is often weaker than many other reviewers have noted. Perhaps this is driven by the fact I live in Germany, however, I cannot imagine that is the case. Additionally, the software (City Navigator v.9) has given me nothing but problems (will not load properly), thus I have been unable to fully utilise this product. Customer service is nothing short of horrible with extended wait times and people who don't really seem to understand the problem. If you intend to buy this unit, I would be tempted to order the SD card already loaded with the software, despite the fact it is rumored to be a slightly scaled down version of the DVD. If you really want a GPS unit for basic use, consider a cheaper scaled down model.

We were not sure if we would like this one and thought it looked rather strange. Boy were we off! If you are a geocacher and want the 'perfect' GPS for the hobby this is it. We love the ergonomics, the features, and the speed and sensitivity. Be sure and put this one on your short list of candidates.

Good product. Updates now available for Mac users also online. I like this one, better battery life than some of the newer ones. No SD card slot.

The Best GPS Unit.......2007-04-18

This GPS is great. A color screen is a must and we have need no problems viewing the screening in direct sunlight. This unit is very durable too with a sporty look. The best part you can take it everywhere (hiking, biking,walking, running, even on trips). Money Well Spent!!!

Nice enough for the trail when you're on foot and not depending on it to tell you how to get somewhere. But it has turned me the wrong way on the road more times than not, one time it told me to turn right when the route it was displaying turned right.

Also its plug locations are just plain stupid. You may want to pop for a bracket if you do use it in the car.

Otherwise the software is quirky and the maps quite expensive.

I purchased my first GPS unit and I am very satisfied. I read many reviews, and researched about a half a dozen candidates before I settled in on the GPSMAP CS. When I bought it, I knew that it was being replaced with a more expensive unit that had a removable SD chip, but I did not need that feature, as the unit had 56 MB on internal memory, plenty for my needs. I bought the unit basically for Geocaching, and it has performed as expected and I would recommend it, or it's new, more expensive upgrade, to anyone who wants a unit that is relatively easy to use. The car mount is a little tricky, but it also performs well, once mastered. You have to attach the external power cord, if you are conserving batteries, before you put the unit in the car mount. Sort of clunky, but not so much as to be a problem.
