Good until they improved it.......2007-06-15
I'm surprised to see people are still choosing this in 2007; although I suppose it might be a good choice to replace a built-in.
I bought mine about two years ago. It arrived with a mis-wired external speaker which I never bothered to return. I handwired in an fm modulator.
The unit seemed to do fair job with navigation until I upgraded the software a few times. After that, it started flipping through map perspectives like crazy (periodically). In fact, the latter version of the software never seemed as intuitive as it was when I first bought it.
Mine finally quit working a few weeks ago and I didn't have the heart to send it back. I can't justify the repair price when Garmin and TomTom are are making smaller units than can also be carried with you. This can help prevent theft or allow you to use them for hiking purposes.
The ideal model should have built in fm modulator, but those are regretably still quite expensive.
It's my first and last Lowrance, I will remember the name.
U LIKE IT. U BUY IT........2007-05-20
Run away from this junk!!!.......2007-04-07
iWay 500C perfect for my daughter (just left the nest).......2007-04-04
We figured a GPS system would help her a) Find her way to school, b) find her way home, and c) Navigate all her driving points in between.
I researched the most popular brands and the iWay 500 was one of the final 3 on my list for consideration. I sat down with my daughter and she indicated she would like the large display offered by the iWay 500 (it's huge! and heavy). We discussed the weight and decided she'd rather have the large display and she'd be leaving it in the car anyway.
So we bought the iWay 500. My wife and I test drove it for a couple weeks before my daughter came home to get her car to set it up and get the feel for the unit. My daughter hates to look at directions, and really doesn't care to 'explore' electronics (unless it's her phone!) so I wanted to see how difficult it was to use.
It was easy! My wife and I tried it out on trips in our area in Virginia (with some trips for 'avoid highways and toll roads' that took us through beautiful farms on our route) and we absolutely got hooked on it.
We have decided that everyone driving in the family is going to get a GPS for Xmas this year!
The size of the display is truly a plus - you just glance down and you can see that 3-D 'aerial' view of your route. It is just amazing with the gas stations, food stops, lakes, parks, etc all labeled and going past on the display.
The unit clips in and out in a second if you want to take it inside.
We didn't hook the 'audio gear' into the stereo system in the cars - the speaker connected to the cigarette power adaptor was plenty of sound to hear the directions the voice was giving us.
This was our first exposure to GPS and we found the amount of 'talking' just right. 'She' didn't talk too much, and she wasn't overly quiet.
Finally, we enjoyed 'ad-libbing' and ignoring 'her' (the iWay's) directions for our own amusement at times - in every case, the trip was re-calculated and the reassuring violet 'path' appeared with the route to our destination recalculated for the path we were now on.
My daughter safely drove hundreds of miles to her college, and is using the iWay to find her way to the parks and recreation areas near her school. Knowing our girl's sense of direction, it gives us a great feeling to have that violet path guiding her to and from her adventures.
We love this device.
Pray you don't get one that doesn't work!.......2007-03-27
