I would buy it again........2007-06-26

I use the 600 for hiking and driving and it works very well. It is small, light and waterproof. I would change the power management feature to allow the user to completely turn off the backlight (instead of just reducing it) to save battery power. The electronic compass is a nice to have feature, but I find that it uses too much battery power, so I turn it off. I carry a spare battery, and for a long outings I also carry an AAA battery pack (sold by Cabela's). I have found that I only need the added MapSend TOPO map as it includes all the driving information I need. The only thing it won't do is compute and display turn-by-turn directions. I have a 1 or 2 GB SD card loaded with most of the US, including Hawaii (where I used it on 4 islands in rental cars and a cruise ship). New users probably should be prepared to read the manual and perhaps buy the instructional DVD, also sold by Cabela's. It has a very sensitive antenna that keeps sat coverage most of the time in canopy and mountains. I had an old Garmin, which did not work well, but I've not had any experience with the new models.

Good GPS/Poor Support.......2007-06-13

I had an Explorist 600 and am considering buying another. Helpful hint: They won't tolerate being run over by a car. I found it to be an excellent GPS but found the support from Magellan to be quite lacking. The lack of auto-rerouting is a bother too since I use it most on bicycle & motorcycle. Overall A good Product.

This is one of the best GPS's I have ever used. I had a problem with the electronic compass at first. Amazon gladly returned and gave me another one. This one is great for every need I come across. I have no complaints.

Magellan 600 Poor customer service.......2007-01-28

I recently purchased an explorist 600. I have called customer service for advice on upgrading, adding maps, etc on this unit. Their customer service is very unresponsive, to the point that they are almost rude. I have spent over two hours on hold for them, to finally get an agent that speaks limited English. I have emailed them, asking an english speaking representative to call me to no avail. They don't seem responsive, are almost scornful to the average person with limited GPS capability. I'm forced to return.
