Amazon.com Product Description

This powerhouse GPS unit just keeps gaining in popularity. Recently bestowed the honor of being named one of "Oprah's Favorite Things for Holiday 2004" it's just getting better and better every year. With the previous version of the RoadMate 700 lacking in included accessories this years RoadMate 700 hits a home run as Magellan has wisely included in the package a windshield suction cup mount, a 12V DC vehicle power adapter, 110V AC power supply, USB data cable, universal cradle and of course a user's manual.

The Magellan RoadMate 700 offers a powerful dash-mounted navigation tool with turn-by-turn voice prompts, making it easy to get to new and unfamiliar locales anywhere in the lower 48 U.S. states and Canada (For a fee it can be loaded European maps using the Magallen web site and the included USB connection cable). It also features a bright color TFT LCD screen (2.25 by 3 inches), touchscreen input, WAAS reception (for 3-meter accuracy), and multiple ways to select your route and then view it on screen.

True View 3D navigation shows you the actual road layout.

The RoadMate 700 is one of the few GPS devices that's ready to go as soon as it's unpacked. Its whoppingly huge 20 GB internal hard drive comes preloaded with detailed road maps for all of the U.S. and the southern (most populated) section of Canada, so you won't have to fiddle with selecting map regions from a CD-ROM and having to transfer the data from a PC. If you keep your addresses on a PDA with IrDA capabilities then you'll enjoy the RoadMate's ability to upload the addresses wirelessly and point you right to your destination. In fact each of the 3 profiles that the unit keeps track of is allotted space for 100 addresses, making a total of 300 addresses available. Of course the most important address, home, can always be accessed with just a few clicks and from any menu and the RoadMate 700 will guide you back with ease.

You can also choose a map view, or the maneuver list.
If you are planning on using the RoadMate 700 with an older car--make sure it has a cigarette lighter power adapter, or leave enough time to charge it up in your hotel room or office with the supplied AC power cord. This also means that you won't be able to use the RoadMate 700 as a handheld device outside of your car. As for mounting, the included suction cup windshield mounting hardware is quite easy to use and allows you to mount the unit on any glass surface in your car. The RoadMate unit easily clips into the provided windshield bracket and can be tilted and turned with it's adjustable arm so you can see it easily and safely while you navigate.
Quickly locate points of interest and amenities along your route.
One of the benefits of the windshield mount is that because it's a suction cup mount you can move it in seconds from car to car with no problems at all. This newer suction cup based windshield mount is an improvement over the older three pronged mount that used to come with the RoadMate units. The older three-pronged mount was inserted into one of the middle air conditioning vents on your dash; the prongs are bendable to help you get the most secure fit, but never gave as secure of a fit as the windshield mount does.

But the RoadMate 700 shines as a virtual co-pilot. During our tests, it consistently acquired a satellite lock quickly (within a minute) and displayed our current position. From there, we searched through the vast library of POIs (points of interest) to find our destination (Seattle's baseball stadium). The RoadMate 700 has four different modes of getting you to your destination--shortest route, shortest distance, least use of freeways, and most freeways. Selecting shortest route got us to this venue using very practical directions that weren't far off from what we normally would choose.

If you're traveling to a destination that's not a widely known POI (such as a friend's home), no problem. You can enter the exact address into the RoadMate 700--using the touchscreen to tap letters and numbers into several search screens--to have it create a route. (You can also save 100 destinations in the address book.

QuickSpell minimizes typing.
The voice prompting was clear and audible (thanks to the two built-in speakers), and we were given ample warnings for upcoming turns. One of the RoadMate's nicest features is the Repeat button (which is smallish, but the only button found on the top of the device). If you miss a turn instruction, press it to repeat the previous voice prompt. Of the three view modes, True View was our favorite--it displays a 3D street-level view that helped us orient ourselves to our surroundings.

Overall, we were quite thrilled with the RoadMate 700's features: the color screen was bright and readable even in direct sunlight and the voice prompts were clear and not distracting to our driving. Best of all, the UI (user interface) screens are easy to navigate and--thanks to its large hard drive and map database--it's ready to go as soon as you open the box. While the price is not for the faint of heart, it will be a very valuable tool for many drivers (from business folk to parents) who need to get to unfamiliar locations quickly and smoothly. -- Agen G.N. 2 out of 5 stars When it works it's great........2007-05-28

I have been an owner of the Magellan 700 for two years. Most of the time I am thrilled with this unit. Unfortunatley the unit frequently losses th satalite and leaves me "Lost". I believe they have a problem with the swivel antenna because when I wiggle it it "usually" reaquires the satalite. Recently my unit started shutting off for no reason. I have ordered an replacement cradle, but it has been on backorder now for two weeks and they don't expect replacement parts until early July. This thing makes a great paperweight.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Cutomer Service Ever.......2007-02-21

What can I say? I purchased the Roadmate 700 in Dec of 05. It is a nice unit, When it WORKS. That is the problems. My problems started simple. The unit kept loosing power. Call the customer service which is in India of course. They sent me a new DC power cord. Month later the problem is still there. Called again. This time they sent me a new power base to mount to. A month later, still the same problem. This time they informed me that there were software issues. Sold me an update for $99. They ensured me that it would make my unit 100% and would upgrade it to be just like a 760. I still have a little bit of faith in the company so I bought it. 2 to 3 months go by and the unit works great, then one day we go to turn it on and nothing. Not even a blink. Sent it in to the repair facility (had to pay to ship the unit to them even though it was under warranty). When I got it back it seemed to work fine but it kept loosing the Satellite Signal. They suggested that it was a weak antenna and that I needed to purchase an external antenna. Even with that the signal was going in and out. Last week the unit failed to receive a signal. When I called Tech support I was informed that they no longer make the unit and that they were no longer repairing the unit. 14 months old. Around $180 worth of upgrades. I was told that I might as well throw the unit in the trash. Then they offered to sell me a new unit as a trade in. After a long conversation I found out that they were offering to trade me in on a refurbished unit with only a 3 month warranty. I think not. I plan to never spend money with Magellan again in life. I also plan to steer as many people as I can from this company. Buyer Beware!!!

2 out of 5 stars Nice Features, but BIG downsides.......2007-02-19

PROS: Nice user interface, intuitive to use, and well designed. It takes a little getting used to - but very useful and functional. When it works - it works GREAT. Great color touchscreen!

CONS:
HORRIBLY unresponsive customer service. After MONTHS of phone calls and emails, I FINALLY got an RMA number to have a hardware problem fixed (where the unit simply froze - it completely stopped working)

After using it for a year, with a window mount, (1) the screws become very loose, and (2) the mount will 'unstick' and fall once in a while. (mine falls off once every few months, and is irritating)

When it falls, the detachable (!!) antenna pops off sometimes. After a couple times popping off, the antenna connection gets loose, and you have to push it back on to get a good connection (of course a good antenna connection is required to make the thing work). (happens once every 60 days, and is irritating)

It can take 5-10 minutes to acquire the GPS sattellites. If it turns on to acquire in the same place that it got turned off, then it acquires much more quickly. So, if you don't mind leaving it on ALL THE TIME, then you should acquire more quickly. However if you, like me, turn the unit on only when you need it, then you will likely have this problem too. (I HATE this problem.)

CONCLUSION:
Given the price I paid ($700), I expected a LOT better performance and fewer bugs. While I'm happy with the product when it works, I'm very unhappy with Magellan, mechanical design, customer service, and acquisition performance. I originally bought Magellan because I liked the Hertz Neverlost. After my experience, the next time I buy GPS (as gifts), I will buy Garmin.

5 out of 5 stars Works well for me.......2007-01-20

I bought one after Christmas. No problem with upgrades as others found in earlier purchases. The only downside is that the unit does take some time to get oriented (30 seconds or more). I bought this brand because of the similarity to the Hertz rental car system. Works well, seems accurate.

4 out of 5 stars magellan roadmate.......2007-01-19

The magellan roadmate has proved valuable when I am driving alone in unknown territory. The helpful prompts let me know in plenty of time when to change lanes or get ready for a turn. I don't use the windshield mount because it is big and ugly. One downside is that the plug-in for the 12v was very hard to get into the receptacle and impossible to get out again. I skinned up my hand trying to get it out of the center console.

5 out of 5 stars I can find................2007-07-04

At 70+ I no longer fear venturing to any road accessible no map address, particularly at night. This item (and I) have performed consistently as new at far below store prices. Bargain !

1 out of 5 stars Thales is NOT a good company........2007-02-25

Bought one of these a year ago. The speaker went out and I sent it in (with RMA) for`warranty repair. A few weeks later Thales sends me a Roadmate 2000 (with 90 day warranty) and says that they are sending that model because parts for the 700 are in short supply. Cute, they send me their bootom of the line model, mediocre-reviewed, with a smaller screen and fewer features because they can't fix the 700 that had no business failing in under a year.

Np more Magellan trash for me. Garmin all the way.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I thought........2007-02-20

The maps on this remanufactured GPS were so old, it was useless without an update.

1 out of 5 stars Only 2.5 yrs old and doesn't work!!!.......2007-02-05

We bought this GPS unit back in 2004 for cross country. It was great then. Then we did a software upgrade last year (2006) ,and this year the unit is basically non-functional now. The unit freezes upon processing data/destination route. This is really disappointing for a company that sells the unit (originally new for over $1K). We expected to get more life out of this unit. Additionally, we inquired about the unit repair--we would have to fork over another $200 to get the unit fixed after last year's upgrade, which cost us about $200 then--to find out the warranty for the upgrade is only for 3 months. What kind of warranty is that? What company would have so low confidence in their product to only offer a 3 month warranty? $200 is no small amount. Recommend buying a GARMIN. Magellan people have a lot of problems to fix!
