As with the best GPS navigators, the device is highly accurate, with precision 12-parallel-channel GPS and WAAS mapping that gets you within a few meters of your destination whether you're on a Great Lakes fishing expedition or a cross-country road trip. Each trip is completely customizable, with the ability to chart new paths, waypoints, trails, and more. You can also easily recalculate your trip route should you get distracted and lose your way, and thanks to the dual MMC/SD card slots -- which are protected by a waterproof door -- the device can save and retrace up to 100 of your favorite plot trails, with up to 10,000 points in each path.

Users can also perform more advanced GPS functions on the GlobalMap 5500C, including determining the distance between two separate locations, creating and editing brand-new routes, and navigating trails and paths backwards. To give users a good mapping foundation, Lowrance included a built-in continental U.S. and Hawaii background map that's enhanced to take advantage of the color display. The detailed map offers such marine features as more than 60,000 nav aids and 10,000 wrecks/obstructions in coastal and Great Lakes areas, along with landlocked extras like interstate exit services, standard major streets, and highways. The GlobalMap is also compatible with Lowrance's optional MapCreate 6 custom mapping software, which offers a full set of searchable land features and more than two million points of interest, including restaurants, lodging, gas stations, emergency services, airports, shopping destinations, and more. In addition, the GlobalMap is compatible with several plug-and-play map choices, such as FreedomMaps, Fishing Hot Spots Elite, LakeMaster Pro Maps, NauticPath USA, and Navionics electronic charts. Each item loads through one of the MMC/SD memory card slots, which support up to one GB of mapping memory each.

The maps are easier to read than ever thanks to the vivid 256-color display, which sports a solid 240 x 320 pixel resolution, wide viewing angles, and multiple lighting levels. Users can even read the screen on bright, sunny days -- a serious advantage for mid-day boat trips. Meanwhile, users with a zest for detail will appreciate the 39 map zoom ranges (from 0.02 to 4,000 miles) and the 42 graphic icons used to mark special spots. Additional features include 1,000 waypoints and 1,000 event markers, 10 user-selectable background languages, and a built-in backup memory for storing your GPS data and settings. Technology-minded users can make the GlobalMap even more versatile by adding such navigational extras as NMEA2000 sensors, fuel-monitoring equipment, or a radar dome.

The sealed, waterproof GlobalMap 5500C, which is suitable for saltwater use, measures 9.6 by 7.3 by 3.7 inches (W x H x D) and is typically powered by a 12-volt boat or vehicle battery. It comes with a gimbal bracket for dash installation, along with all the necessary cables for battery connection and a face cover that protects the device when idle. As with all Lowrance GPS receivers, the item is backed by a one-year warranty.
