The CXAI5198 from Uniden is a combination corded/cordless phone system that comes loaded with features. The cordless handset comes with its own charging cradle and utilizes the 5.8 GHz frequency to deliver greater range and clearer reception than many traditional 900 MHz or 2.4 GHz phones.

With the page button, you can easily find the misplaced handset, while headset compatibility gives you the option of hands-free communication. You can access features via an LCD screen found on the cordless handset and corded base unit, and you can choose between one of three menu languages (English, Spanish, or French). The CXAI5198 is compatible with caller ID and call waiting services, and has a 50-number caller ID memory. A 10-number speed dial is also provided for frequently called numbers. Display-and-dial lets you call any number from the caller ID or speed dial display simply by pressing the talk button.

The corded base unit functions as a complete message center, with a built-in digital answering machine and hands-free speakerphone. The answering machine has a 13-minute maximum recording time and a selectable 1 or 4-minute maximum message length. Features such as call screening, memo recording, and call recording are provided; and you can access your messages while away from home with remote message check.

With the intercom function, you can communicate from the base unit to the cordless handset, while three-way conference calling lets both locations talk to an outside call at the same time. You can place a call on hold or temporarily mute your side of the conversation. The base unit is wall-mountable, providing you with extra placement options, and both tone and pulse dialing modes are available depending upon your needs. Uniden also provides a one-year limited warranty.

I like this phone system a lot. I had been on a cell-phone only kick until I moved into a place that had no cell service at all. The old portable phone that I pulled out of my closet to use had horrible reception. I really needed a great phone to talk to my boyfriend who is out of town on jobs long stints at a time (thus, we need to talk on the phone all the time). He actually found this one on Amazon and suggested it to me. We're both very happy with the results.
I do live in an apartment complex, so the reception seems slightly muddled at times, possibly due to phone signals from nearby neighbors? However, if I'm in a room adjacent to where the base is, I seem to be ok. The answering machine and main part of the phone are very user friendly and work just great.

A little Disappointed.......2007-07-01

Before I purchased this product I researched Consumer Reports. This phone rating well with CR. I also read some of the reviews on Amazon's site. Well the cordless handset had a little static and the call was not clear. Also, people kept complaining of not being able to hear me on the speaker phone on the base.

Needless to say my Uniden 5198 is headed back.

This is the first Uniden telephone that we have bought. We were a little hesitant on buying this as we had never tried any product of this brand till now. After getting the phone I can surely say it is a quality product.

It is a really good phone with lot of features for its price. We were looking for a phone which has the following features: Corded + Cordless, answering machine, speaker phone, sturdy build, nice look and usability in case of power failure. This phone has all of them to our full satisfaction.

The communication between the base unit and cordless handset is crystal clear. We were worried on this because some of the earlier reviews reported the problem of static. May be those people had lot of electronic devices near the base phone that may be causing interference. Volume and sound quality are more than enough for a person with a normal hearing. Access and operating the features is very easy. This phone gives full value for your money.

Not worth the money.......2007-05-03

I bought this telephone because I needed a combination phone system with an answering machine. I had my phone for less than a month when my battery in my cordless wouldn't hold a charge for very long. Not too long after that, the cord phone base wouldn't ring!!! I have had 2 Uniden brand phones so far and both of them turned out to be junk....don't buy!!!

If only the speakerphone worked, I'd love it.......2006-12-31

We really wanted a corded / cordless combination 'phone with an answering machine and this one works fine. My only gripe is that the speakerphone (at least on mine) barely works. You basically have to have your mouth at the bottom of the 'phone (where the microphone is) for it to work enough for the other party to hear you. Unless you want to scream. The reception on the cordless phone is very clear. You can get fairly far away from the base but of course, multiple walls may make the line scratchy or unusable. All in all, I'm happy with this telephone.
