Lucent AT&T 140 Corded Desk Telephone

Product Description

Amazon.com Review
If you find yourself intimidated by too many functions on the latest high-tech telephones, or you just need something basic, check out the Lucent AT&T 140. It offers a straightforward design, sturdy construction, and an easy-to-read keypad.

Setting up the AT&T 140 was as easy as using the phone itself. We simply plugged the line cord into the wall jack and the phone was ready to go. Two cords are included so you can easily convert from desktop to wall mounting. The handset is sleek and sturdy. The base contains only 14 buttons, including 10 numbers, star, pound, flash, and redial.

The redial memory can accept numbers up to 16 digits long. The number stored in redial can be erased by lifting the handset and pressing any digit. If you subscribe to call waiting, the flash button provides a convenient way to access your incoming call. The large white figures on the buttons are easy to read against the black background.

Despite its simplicity, there are a few useful adjustments you can make on the 140. Receiver and ringer switches are located on the side of the phone and can be set to low or high. The receiver switch lets you select the volume of the caller's voice. The ringer emits a pleasant digital sound at either setting. A switch on the bottom of the phone allows you to choose between tone and pulse. Other features include hearing aid compatibility.

In our tests of the 140, we found the voice quality to be clear, and we did not detect any background interference. The large buttons were comfortable to the touch. Overall, we appreciated the simplicity of the Lucent AT&T 140 and recommend it to anyone looking for a good-quality basic phone. --Emily Bakko

5 out of 5 stars Extension phone.......2007-07-04

Attractive, modern phone. Received promptly. Multiple items from this seller do not show up on the tracking list. Only the first shipped one does. Otherwise a good transaction.

1 out of 5 stars No one ever notified me.......2007-06-13

This item never arrived. I emailed the supplier, Polsteins Home and Beyond, they never got back to me. It was to arrive a month ago. I finally looked them up and got their phone number. They said the item was discontinued. They also said they wrote an email on the 9th telling me that it was discontinued. I didn't get one.

The phone was for my mother who is elderly and in desperate need of a phone like this. Days mattered.

I order a lot of stuff through Amazon. This is an experience that will make me question whether they are good for things like this.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Telephone.......2007-06-01

My phone arrived immediately. I connected it and am pleased with its clarity of sound. I would recommend this phone to anyone who wants a basic, inexpensive telephone. I purchased it for my middle schoolers who need to call home from time to time for lunch money, etc. I would not hesitate to order it again should I need another one.

5 out of 5 stars Great bang for the buck........2007-04-13

i bought this phone almost 2 years ago, and it's still as good as new. Great phone. Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Keypad on Phone doesn't work........2007-04-11

This phone doesn't work. When I need to dial an extension or account number, the recording I dialed just keeps on talking and keypad doesn't work. It is a cheap phone and I regret I bought it. I don't want to pay the postage or go to the post office just to get another piece of junk. I wish the company would replace it on their own by mail, no charge.

AT&T's 1855 Speakerphone with Digital Answering System and Caller ID is designed for the customer who needs a basic corded phone with enhanced features. The three-line LCD allows you to view the name, number, time and date of incoming calls at a glance, even those on Call Waiting. Caller ID stores the name, number, time and date of up to 50 incoming calls, whether or not the phone is answered. Numbers stored in Caller ID history can be dialed directly. The speakerphone frees your hands for more important tasks, and the one-touch redial button provides you with a convenient way to quickly call someone back after you've hung up.

A digital answering system is built into the telephone, reducing clutter on your desktop. Because operation is fully digital, messages are stored without the use of tapes or other moving parts that can wear out. Access your messages when you are away from home with the remote functions at your disposal from any touch-tone phone.

The Volume control lets you customize the proper audio levels, and the Mute button gives you instant privacy when someone's on the line. The phone is wall mountable to help save space.

4 out of 5 stars Desk phone.......2007-06-11

Does the job well. Had I thought about it a little more, I would have purchased a phone with Caller ID exhibited.

3 out of 5 stars at&t 1855.......2007-05-30

I was disappointed when phone arrived and I found that it meeded to be plugged in to elec. outlet to operate, i.e. no provision for battery operation. This greatly reduces it's usefulness as a wall phone. Perhaps I should have read details more carefully ! Phone works fine if you can tolerate the inconvenience of it having to be plugged into wall outlet.

5 out of 5 stars Great Phone.......2007-05-20

We really like this phone. Way better than the last one we had. Sound quality is great. The folks I have talked to on speaker phone even say the sound was good on their end too. So I would most certainly recommend this phone to anyone. It is Great.

3 out of 5 stars answer phone.......2007-05-15

Bought this for a small professional office. The voice quality on playback from remote is poor. It is relatively okay but not nearly up to old AT&T standards. It is also difficult to get the machine to respond remotely to the touch tone signal code both on land line and cell phones. Disappointing.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Well designed, a few problems.......2007-06-30

I've probably purchased about 10 2-line phones over the years. The category is always pretty severely hampered in terms of features and usability, and I'm guessing that's because it's in between home use and office use. Nonetheless, two lines can't be that uncommon can it?

Anyway, let me start with the good.

* This is the first 2-line answering machine phone that I could set up completely without a manual. The base station has lots of dedicated buttons that are big, and obvious.

* The corded base combined with a cordless handset is a great idea. It means I don't have to hunt down the handset to use it.

* Decent sound and tone quality when talking to folks, although some describe the sound as a bit "hollow". However, I found that older folks who are hard of hearing can hear my voice very well with this phone.

* There is an option for the answering machine to "chirp" when it has a saved message. Very handy when you walk in the door, you know you have a message without looking at the machine.

* You can charge a 2nd battery in the base unit, this doubles as a battery backup if power goes out. Unfortunately, the 2nd battery is not included.

* A mute button for speaker phone. How many phones don't have this?

* The wireless handsets can be speaker phones as well.

* Overall, the thing feels "natural" to use.

Now the not-so-good:

* The Answering machine works well enough, but sound quality is really marginal. I haven't tried the outgoing message, since I prefer the anonymous outgoing message. But the saved messages have fairly poor quality, like the sampling rate is way too low.

* Entries in the phone book cannot be selected once the phone is off the hook. That means you have to select an entry from the phone book, hit either line1 or line2 speakerphone and then pick up the handset. It's not horrible, just awkward.

* Why will no machine maker include a "save as new" option for messages? This should be a no-brainer, since it's value is immense. Maybe it's too costly to implement.

* Phone book entries put in the base are not pushed out to the handsets and vice-versa. The manual tries to turn this into feature, but it's not.

* speaking of which, why will nobody offer an ability to transfer phone book entries to/from a PC? Or do people like entering phone numbers and names repeatedly?

Overall, you realize you pay huge premium for that 2nd line, and there are tradeoffs, but this appears to be a decent choice given the alternatives. Phones are sort of personal in terms of what you do and don't like, so pay attention to the negative reviews as much as the positive.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this phone!.......2007-06-27

Don't buy this phone. It's the worst piece of garbage that I have bought on line. It has the worst sound, cord and cordless, that I have ever heard on a phone. The cordless has no range, it is constantly losing a signal. It seems to sound ok on the other end of a call.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing message quality.......2007-06-07

As other reviewers have commented, the OGM quality is awful and message playback is only slightly better. I would say a majority of messages are hard to understand if not unintelligible. The other functions of the phone are good and well thought out.

The electronics and performance seem identical to my VTech 20-2381 and 20-2341 phones as well as the AT&T 2462 (except that these operate 2.4 GHz.)

4 out of 5 stars While not feature rich, it's well designed and solid........2007-06-06

It is so hard these days to shop for electronics, with models that come and go, with lots of attention paid to "looks", and little to functionality. This is phone that seems to break that mold. The model has been out for while, and it seems to get the basics right. The design is uncluttered, the phone sound is clear, and it has useful and easy to understand buttons and functions.

I bought one for home, then went and purchased another for a small business. Both are working great. I particularly like that most functions work perfectly from the wireless handset. I don't like how the clock works, or the fact that each handset has a separate address book.

PS: the phone is not actually made by AT&T, you know that right? It is made by a company in China that licenses the AT&T name, and calls themselves Advanced American Telephone.

2 out of 5 stars Unprofessional Outgoing Message Quatlity.......2007-04-11

Have to return this phone even though I love the features and look. The quality of the outgoing message on the answering system is horrible. I need a more professional sounding greeting. Speakerphone sound is also weak. All this may be ok for regular home use but not for a home office or business use where sound quality matters.

Amazon.com Product Description

Enjoy all the convenience of dial-in remote access and none of the hassles of hissy, imprecise analog answering machines thanks to AT&T's compact and affordable 1726 digital answering system. It offers three separate voice mailboxes and is compatible with paid services like caller ID (announce, not display) and call screening/intercept.

An extended record time of 40 minutes means you won't have to erase your messages just to have free storage space for new messages, and the device even lets you move messages between mailboxes for convenient file sharing with other household members. A two-digit message counter informs you of how many messages are currently in each mailbox.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This answering system ROCKS!.......2007-06-01

I had purchased this system many years ago, and then, after several years of heavy usage and trusty service, it putzed out on us. I searched high and low for something comparable and couldn't find anything. I decided to look on Amazon.com - and really lucked out!

This is why I love this answering system:
1) Audio Caller ID: the system verbally announces the number of incoming calls!
2)Separate mailboxes: we are a busy family, and so we each have our own mailboxes.
3) It's inexpensive (but NOT cheap!)
4) It's SUPER easy to use

Now that I think about it....I should have bought two....

4 out of 5 stars Recording Clarity.......2007-05-07

Your other ratings did reflect poor recording quality for the announcment. The directions state to record the announcment remotely, however most people don't and when you record directly into the unit it comes out very garbled. If you do record from another phone like the directions tell you to, the announcment is clear and works perfectly. The directions are not very clear, but once you do it, it works great.

2 out of 5 stars Works OK - controls are a pain..........2007-03-09

Does what it is supposed to do, but the control interface and 'button clicking' processes to get to the programming menus are a pain....

1 out of 5 stars Speaker didn't work - had to return it.......2006-08-21

I am another person who couldn't even set up the unit since the speaker didn't work when I opened the box. It might be an okay unit, but since I received a defective one, I will never know. I saw others had received defective units, but thought it wouldn't happen to me. I took a chance and lost. Seems like AT & T has a quality assurance problem if they are shipping lots of units with problems. Steer clear...

1 out of 5 stars DRIVES ONE TO DRINK -- THROW IT AGAINST THE WALL.......2006-08-16

First one total malfunction -- returned. Replacement -- can't get repeat of the messages -- instructions totally inadequate -- calling Customer Service a JOKE. If you have HOURS OF TIME to work at it -- you MIGHT get it figured out! It totally destroys "any" respect for the AT&T trademark. In My opinion -- TOTAL DISASTER. I would not even suggest looking at a picture of it! WORTHLESS -- "GREAT" WASTE OF TIME -- A DISGRACE TO AT&T.

3 out of 5 stars AT&T 146 DesignLine Telephone (Windchill White).......2006-08-10

Product was purchased to use in case of Hurricane failure of our portable phones. Product will only be used in case of emergency & not on a daily basis.

3 out of 5 stars Was OK for about 9mths.......2006-01-27

This phone HAD good sound quality even with my DSL(yes filters were on)...Just a barely audible little hiss on the line unless you turn up (well "slide up")the phone's volume too high). There is a thingie you slide to control the volume...no button. I guess for the price I should not expect anything GREAT. Well after around 9mths or so I am getting such a BAD crackling noise on the line (even when my I'm not using my PC and the DSL is not on)that I can no longer use this phone. What is sad I paid almost $15 for it @an office supplies store yet I am seeing it on various sites including this one for between $5-10 now. Oh well... LOL.

5 out of 5 stars Small package, big performance.......2005-02-07

I was pleasantly surprised by this phone. It feels solid, has a nice design, and has excellent sound quality on both ends of the line.

2 out of 5 stars Weird Handset, too light........2004-11-25

The handset on this phone is way too weird to use comfortably and the phone is so light that the base gets dragged around by the handset when you are using it. I like the AT&T 210 Trimline phones (which are supposedly discontinued, but easy to find on Amazon.com) much better.

4 out of 5 stars Rare, innovative design, weird handset.......2004-02-06

I bought this phone free after rebate and it's one of those rare tiny phones with the keypad in the base. This makes it an ideal wall phone. I can't say it's useful as a desk phone as the base slides around despite it's heavy weight. The keypad in the base is a good plus for a phone this inexpensive--usually you need to get a much more expensive speaker phone just for buttons in the base. If you spend a lot of time with voice-response systems, as many of us do with voice mail and such, this telephone is the most convenient way to do it for the least money.

The handset is weird. The microphone is entirely too skinny and if you're a shoulder-holder you probably won't like the phone. The handset cord is long enough but it's the cheap dull-finished kind that gets dirty easily. Get a nice AT&T Tuff Cord to replace it.

4 out of 5 stars Replacement handsets for AT&T.......2007-05-13

I had to replace the handsets from my phone system after about three years' of use as the buttons started to stick and became difficult to push. Luckily, they were cheap to replace and I get another three years out of my same system.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC PHONE!!!!.......2005-11-15

READ THE MANUAL!

I have had this phone with 3 handsets and the only drawback is I don't have the 4th!

There is no caller ID bug. You just have to tap the REDIAL button until the number is displayed the way you want to dial it (7 digit, 8 digit, 10 digit, 11 digit) It cycles through all the possibilities of dialing the number for your local dialing rules.

Great sound, Great reception, Great Versatility!

I have 2 small boys and the speakerphone is great for them. Plus, they've dropped the phones many times and it holds up!

Great Value! Buy It!

1 out of 5 stars Take your money elsewhere!.......2005-02-23

I purchased this phone with an additional handset last week and it is of extremely poor quality so I have resumed use of my old 900 mhz VTech. This phone causes both an echo of my voice and a loss of fluid communication, which, is the reason for its use! In sum, take your money elsewhere!

5 out of 5 stars Great product - No caller I.D. bug either.......2004-11-26

I have four of these phones (a base and three additional phones) and four teenagers! I think they have held up well. I have also found the Caller I.D. feature to work fine as well. An earlier reviewer indicated it had a bug, but I think this will solve the problem for him. Page 42 of the manual explains that to change the Caller I.D. display, you press # until you see the number in the display change to the way you need it to be to dial it (i.e., push the # sign until the #1 appears before the phone number to dial a long-distance number).

1 out of 5 stars Very Poor Phone.......2004-07-05

Poor quality unit. That's why AT&T doesn't sell these themselves, but out-sources them instead. Half the time I have a echo in my ear of myself when I use the phone. Now it has developed a "Chripping" sound that you only hear once you have dialed the number. The person on the other end can't hear you when this happens. Solution is hang up, walk over to base unit, pick base unit up about 4 inches from desk, drop base unit on desk, re-dial the phone number. Of course these undocumented features (problems) began shortly after the warranty had expired.

1 out of 5 stars Bad audio, poor product.......2007-06-11

Neither the base unit nor the cordless phone were satisfactory in terms of sound quality. The answering machine was often unintelligible. I would take note of the fact that Amazon's current price is approximately 50% of the list. I like bargains, but in this case I suspect it is a matter of not being able to sell the stock on hand -- for a good reason.

5 out of 5 stars Stupendous phone..........2007-02-15

I purchased this phone and got a great deal. I'm very happy with my phone and its excellent quality.

3 out of 5 stars Cordless chaos.......2006-02-26

I found the directions for programming this machine to be almost incomprehensible. Using trial and error and blessed with a little luck , I made it happen. The machine is far too complex for my tastes. It tries to do all things for all users and not too well. Another complaint is that when you have the speaker -phone on , and you dial a number using the directoory, there is no way to lower the sound volume. I complained to Tech Services and they promised me an answer. That was several weeks ago. I think I hit a nerve here.

1 out of 5 stars AT&T 1487 not so good.......2006-01-31

The answering system on the unit I purchased is acceptable. The audio quality of the cordless handset is disappointing: I hear a constant hiss when using it.

4 out of 5 stars Does what's asked of it.......2005-11-16

I purchased this unit last week and so far am satisfied with its performance. Getting the memories set up was a bit time consuming . I'm not particularly impressed with the styling of the base unit-would have preferred a more rectangular shape with larger buttons. The audio on the answering unit should be made a little louder and clearer. I ordered it thru J&R Music and was astonished to find it on my doorstep the very next day!I purchased this unit to take advantage of my new Caller ID service and to replace an older At&T Desk unit and Casio answering machine. To sum up, I would reccomend this unit for its overall good performance and reasonable price.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Voicemail/answering system poorly designed and often quirky.......2007-06-09

The answering system gets confused if you try to replay the previous message during playback. And once you listen to all new messages, you have to listen to old messages in reverse. So if I don't catch all message number 2 out of 69, then I have to listen to all 69 messages before I can go back (hitting the "Backward" button while it's playing just confuses it). But say I save 20 of those messages (don't delete them). I have to go backwards through those 20 messages just to listen to message number 2 again. Maybe my phone has a manufacturing defect or maybe it's just bad design, but either way I'm getting rid of it. Unforunately there aren't too many options for business phones with the same features. Gheeze, doesn't anyone sell a decent desk phone with a headset jack and a answering machine for around $100? Even for $150 I'm hard pressed to find one with an answering machine built in.

2 out of 5 stars Not happy with phone or seller.......2006-11-01

This phone has all the features that I want. It also has a feature that I DON'T want! Whenever there is a power interruption...you lose everything!
Almost all settings and directories! It has a battery back-up...but as far as I'm concerned, it don't work. It also must a chip..because very vew of the settings survive a power failure. (unimportant things like the area code survive). I now have to spend an extra $50.00 getting an AC battery back-up for it. I really give it a "1"
As far as the seller....I contacted Stratton products (seller) asking to send it back and they never responded, I give them a "-1"

2 out of 5 stars Intercom doesn't work on my wiring.......2006-01-10

One of the nice concepts of this phone was the idea of using it as an intercom. I have a huge house, and it's nice to be able to intercom someone in their room instead of going all the way over there each time.

When I plug two of these phones directly into each other, the intercom works as advertised. But over my house wiring the intercom functions don't seem to work. It just sits there beeping at me like I did something wrong.

Can't comment on the voice mail problems - I've never tried them.

1 out of 5 stars The Worst Phone on the Planet.......2005-12-23

Everything wrong cited in the earlier reviews is true. The poorest quality at the highest price--shame on you AT&T. Based on my experience with this product, I will never purchase an AT&T branded anything.

1 out of 5 stars Typical cheap Asian electronics.......2005-03-04

In other words, lots of claimed features, many of which are unnecessary, conflict with one another and are poorly documented. Additionally, we found that this unit (although not the 944 slave) is subject to RFI (static), which required us to relocate it to another room.

How much is your time worth? Figure on spending at least 5 hours getting this turkey up to a minimal operating level and never being able to get it to work fully.

Since the RFI appears to be generated by the answering system, consider buying a separate answering machine. The first one we bought, from AT&T, was defective. We ended up instead with the Panasonic KX-TM100B [ASIN: B00000J53X]. You'll save yourself a lot of grief by buying it instead.

Another reviewer recommends the Voice Logic Voice Pro 412 system. I don't have any experience with that one, but can't see how it could possibly be as bad as this.

If you do buy this one, or have already bought it, be sure to download and save the operating manual. Otherwise, once amazon stops selling it, you'll have trouble finding a manual. This is, obviously, good advice with any electronics product.

5 out of 5 stars Great phone, exactly as advertised........2007-04-10

Glad I got these phones!

After we discovered our son is sensitive to 2.4Ghz or higher frequencies (as most children are), and he was getting headaches from our wireless internet and 2.4Ghz phones we decided to go back to WIRED phones in the home.

These were the obvious choice, and I am happy with our choice! No complaints about this phone at all.

1 out of 5 stars Blah phone.......2007-03-28

I sent it back. The price was right but the caller ID didn't function. When I got in touch with AT&T, they told me, maybe this phone is not compatible with the other phones in my home. (Stupid Response!) I then asked, why would AT&T put a phone on the market that's not compatible with my other phones, I didn't get a reply!!! They wanted to send me a replacement. I told them there is no point in doing that, if, the replacement phone was not compatible with my other phones! I guess AMAZON will be sending it back to AT&T.

2 out of 5 stars Batteries Not Included.......2007-03-15

The description advertises no power cord required, and the box has large print stating "No AC Power Needed". Smaller print however notes that if you want the caller-id (which isn't back-lit) to function, that you need to provide 3 AA batteries.

The last thing I wanted was one more thing that required batteries.

5 out of 5 stars Great phones.......2007-02-03

Ordered 2 of these AT & T phone on 2/1/07. Received the phones in 1 day - today. Excellent service - Easy to hook up and I love the caller ID feature.

Great phones for great price!

5 out of 5 stars At Last!!! A New Style Phone That Has Some Weight To It!!!.......2007-01-31

I purchased two of this phone model, tried them out for a spell and like them. I am online RIGHT NOW to buy three more so as to get rid of all the other phones (except the 1960's wall phone still in mint condition).

New phones today are light weighted pieces of plastic that screech instead of ring, and fling around the table that they are set onto because they weigh less then an ounce (joking - I think they weight right at 1.25 ounces) Not this model...not at all...it's a fat pup with some meat on her.

In fact, besides feeling REALLY great in the hand from the stand point of ergonomics, they are smooth, rounded and curvy. Hey, they look sweet no matter what you put them on top of, and they stay put while walking around with my 50-feet cords (Self-purchased. The phone comes with a 6 or 9 foot cord - I am guessing). No sudden slipping to the floor by this phone and this is so because they are well built.

I'd venture to say that they are built to last. And, they are built heavy enough to hug that table top, arm-chair's arm or stack of magazines which is a MAJOR plus in my book. Of course any thing is going to hit the floor if you pull too hard. I miss those phones we used to get directly from the phone company when services were ordered. Man they were good phones.

Would I absolutely recommend this phone to you? As of this date I would have to say that I have found the phone to be the better, by a large margin, of the lot of flimsy, light-weighted, bird-chirping pieces of doo-doo owned as of this point. The caller ID uses three AA batteries and is very clear. It is located at the top of the phone's hand device, so, you may need to turn the phone a little to the side if you are lying down in bed. I really do not feel that having to do this makes the phone a no-go...as did a few others. Man, talk about having to have your cake, and eat-it-too!

The dial pad and Caller ID devices ARE NOT back-lit, which would have been an extra good touch as I hate trying to feel around in the dark for a ringing phone, but then again I have taught my family and friends what the difference is between what they call an emergency, and what I consider an emergency, and thereby good reason for waking me up. Violation of this rule, with those who know me, know is a very big OOPS! So, rarely is this an issue. So, there really isn't a need for a telephone night-light.

So, would I recommend this phone? Yes.

Amazon.com Product Description

A solidly crafted phone created with small businesses in mind, the AT&T 972 is an old-fashioned corded phone supplying a consistently reliable connection on up to two separate lines. The cord is the only old-fashioned feature about this model: it includes three-party conferencing, call waiting/caller ID compatibility (with subscription to local service) and external data ports that allow you to connect a fax or other office machine.

The 99-station caller ID log allows instant access for returning calls, and stamps every call with the date and time it was received. A built-in speakerphone and headset jack provide multiple options for hands-free operation, while the visual message indicator informs you about any waiting messages (with subscription to voicemail service). This model is wall or desktop mountable.

2 out of 5 stars I love AT&T products... but this one disappoints.......2006-04-18

The AT&T 972 has some nice features to talk about (nice button arrangement, easy to access incoming/outgoing calls list, programming speed dials, etc.). The big problem is that it falls seriously short in outgoing voice quality from the handset and/or the speakerphone. The incoming side seems to be fine on the handset and speakerphone, that is, you can hear them just fine. The problem is that people I call say that my voice sounds "tinny" or is "clipping" (cutting off the high frequencies) when I use the handset. Using the speakerphone, no one could understand me unless I spoke with my mouth right next to the speakerphone. Obviously, this will not work for anyone.

So, I would not recommend this phone to anyone that needs to conduct a conversation over a speakerphone. It will not work and you will have wasted your money.

2 out of 5 stars Nice "Human design" and features, BUT speakerphone problems.......2006-01-09

First let me say that the speakerphone produces plenty of volume, much better than most other phones I have tried. This was especially important since I often participate on nightly conference calls overseas where low receive level is often a problem.

However, there is one major problem that might be related to poor design or manufacturing variation. (I have 3 of these phones). If another person picks up an extension in another part of the house while using the 972 speakerphone, the 972 speaker will cut in and out often introducing an annoying clicking sound for all parties listening. The amount of muting and clicking is differs significantly between the 3 phones I own. In the worst case, the speakerphone is totally muted and I can't hear anything.

4 out of 5 stars Well Made Phone.......2005-10-11

October 12, 2005

When I purchased the AT&T 972, it had been on the market for about four years. I received and installed this phone in early October.

The features that caused me to select this phone in the order of importance are:
1. Two line phone
2. Speaker phone
3. One touch and two touch dialing

The two line phone works with one cable or two cables.

The speaker phone works well. The person you call knows you are on a speaker phone, however, it is very clear. Having two people communicating on my end is not a problem. The volume control could be better; see below.

The eighteen one touch and two touch dialing capability is excellent. These buttons will dial any number, overseas or domestic. This phone stores up to 24 digits for each number and you are able to put a pause in the sequence which is handy for some situations.

To make labels for the one touch dialing, Microsoft Arial 11 Bold worked out well. To make the upper and lower labels easy to distinguish, I inserted two spaces before the lower name. The plastic cover over the one touch buttons is easy to remove yet is secure when you install it.

Things that could be done better:

The display is not back lit.

The volume control is alll programmable from the same volume up, volume down keys.

Below is a description of how the volume control works in different functions. I so wish there was a little mechanical switch for each ringer volume control.

The ringer volume for each line is controlledd with the phone hung up. The volume control adjusts the ringer of line 1 or line 2 according to which line is selected. Each time you press volume up or volume down, the phone produces one ring at the new volume and beeps when you reduce the volume to ringer off.

While on the speaker phone, the volume up or down keys will adjust the speaker volume. Once set, it seems to be correct for all calls. The volume change is in a small range but very adequate even for people with a slight hearing loss. For a reason known only to AT&T, a beep, beep, beep occurs when you change the volume; thus it is my recommendation you take it to the highest volume before you make your first call.

Hand Set - the same volume control works with the hand set as described with the speaker phone.

Other features you may like:

The hand set has a good feel to it and operates properly.

The button sizes and shapes are ideal.

Flash button to actuate call waiting or three-way calling.

Display Dialing allows you to call a number in your Call History List. When returning calls, you can go through your call list until you reach their name and number. Then press Display Dial to call that number. If the hand set is on the hook, the speaker will be turned-on.

2 out of 5 stars Poor Sound Quality.......2005-06-26

I bought two of these phones for my home office. I thought the menu-driven interface was a nice touch, but it cannot overcome the poor sound quality of the handset. The microphone on the handset is hyper-sensitive. My S's hiss and my P's pop so loudly that it almost hurts, and it's distracting to hear myself breathing while listening to the other person. I'm returning this phone for something better.

2 out of 5 stars nice looking with poor speakerphone.......2005-05-25

This phone worked well, but, in less than 6 months, the speakerphone faded in and out, to the point where it was not possible to hear the incoming message at times. I obtained a replacement, but the replacement phone did the same thing. Other people have reported similar experiences in their reviews.
