If you're looking for a two-line multifunction telephone for your home or home office, the GE 2-Line digital messaging system is an ideal candidate. It provides conference calling and digital answering for each line, all in one elegantly designed desktop unit.
After plugging in the phone line and AC power adapter, a synthesized voice let us know the system had been activated. We found the unit sturdy and attractive with an organized layout. The digital answering functions are grouped together at the top of the unit, individual programming functions on either side of the numeric keypad, and line and speaker buttons at the bottom. Memory buttons are conveniently located next to a directory for at- a-glance reference. Basic functions, such as ringer volume and clock settings, can be found on either side of the unit.
Although programming the phone was not completely intuitive, we had no problem following the owner's manual. For example, to set the date, we held the time check/set button until the correct day appeared. We set the time by selecting the current hour and minute, pressed the star button to select AM or PM, and then pressed the time button once again to save.
We found the digital answering functions easy to use without the manual. The large buttons are clearly marked and straightforward. A voice mailbox is provided for each line. The synthesized voice guided us through much of the setup, such as recording a greeting and playing back messages. You can record different outgoing announcements for each line and can set them to play during specific hours, or you can activate a particular greeting remotely.
You can store up to 24 numbers for memory dialing and easily access them at the touch of a button. To store a number, you press the store/in button, enter the number to be stored, press the store/in button again, and select a memory location button. To clear a stored number, just skip the second step of the storing procedure.
For a three-way conversation, simply place the party on the first line on hold, call the second party on the other line and press the conference button. Other features include speakerphone, conversation record, and a distinctive ring for each line. --Emily Bakko
Pros:
- Digital answering system with timed outgoing announcements
- Convenient memory dialing
- Sturdy, attractive unit; can be wall mounted
Cons:
- Some programming tasks require owner's manual
Amazon.com Product Description
The GE two-line digital message system with speakerphone is perfect for the small home office. Its call conferencing permits three parties to be linked together, and the chain-dialing capability saves dialing time for making credit card calls. The do-not-disturb function turns off the speaker and takes a message on the second ring. You can also work both lines at once with the electronic hold button. The GE two-line phone accepts an optional battery for limited operation during power failures. This function saves recorded messages as well. A full-featured speakerphone option provides hands-free dialing, speaker volume control, microphone mute, and auto switching to the handset.
The digital answering system eliminates the need for cumbersome tapes that sometimes result in static or garbled messages. The outgoing announcement stops and resets automatically when any phone in your house is answered. Each line can have a separate outgoing announcement plus one default message. These outgoing messages are programmable to be active at different hours of the day. If you need to check messages away from home, the 10-touch remote function is easy to use with a programmable three-digit code.
