The Panasonic KX-TG2420B is a GigaRange Digital Cordless Phone System, based on 2.4 GHz Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum Technology. That's a mouthful, but what does it mean? This technology "hops" constantly through a range of available channels to reduce interference and to provide improved security against eavesdropping. And since it is all digital technology, you get long range and incredible clarity.Kids sleeping? The antenna will signal you silently! Panasonic found a way to shorten the handset antenna while still maintaining the long range that Panasonic customers have become accustomed to. But what's even cooler is that the base of the antenna - which lights up - will alert you to an incoming call (or a message waiting for you). The light-up indicator will flash quickly to show that you have an incoming call, and it will flash slowly to let you know you have a new message in your voice mailbox. So turn off the ringer, let the kids sleep, and never miss a call.Put the phone down while you talk. Having a handset speakerphone may not seem like such a big deal-until you have to call an automated phone system. By the time you press "2" and return the phone to your ear, you missed half the next option! And when they put you on hold for ten minutes, do you really need to hold the phone? Not with the handset speakerphone. Just listen along, and press a button or pick up when it's convenient. You'll think up other great uses, like letting Grandma and Grandpa listen to their new grandchild at the same time, painting your nails as you talk to your best friend, or just being able to set the phone down while you talk.See who's calling, even if you're already on the phone. That feature, however, isn't turned on by default. Neither are several others. Unlike other phones, cameras, MP3 players, and many other devices, you'll probably want to actually use the manual and consider each setting, as the menu defaults are in some instances odd.
The sound quality is initially what you would (and we did) expect from a Panasonic, but the battery drain is poor and the volume drops off in long calls (within ten minutes). And while we've had no problems with DSL, as reported by another reviewer, we do agree with the concerns raised about keypad lighting.
On balance, I'd recommend the KX-TG2216FV instead. This one isn't that much smaller, and the weaker features make it a weaker choice.

The former is bolstered by Panasonic's Voice Enhancer technology, which is better able to reproduce the full range of the human voice, thus improving the performance of each and every call--even those made at a distance from the base. The multichannel autoscanning, meanwhile, instinctively searches for the frequency with the least interference, so you don't have to suffer through a static-filled conversation.Thanks to the phone's call waiting/caller ID compatibility--which requires a subscription to a fee-based phone company service--and caller ID memory, you'll know the name and number of the last 50 callers, even if you're currently talking to someone else. The handset's three-line, multifunction LCD, meanwhile, lets you see all caller ID information without scrolling, while the backlighting aids visibility in low-light situations. Another nice bonus is the phone directory, which stores an additional 50 names and numbers of your favorite friends, family members, and pizza joints. Plus, thanks to the display-and-dial feature, you can scroll through either the phone directory or the caller ID list and dial the selected number simply by pressing talk.
Additional features include an adjustable handset volume, a redial function that remembers the last five numbers, a page locator that helps track down a misplaced handset, and an illuminated keypad for dialing in the dark. The wall-mountable phone, which comes with an integrated NiMH battery, measures 6.59 by 9.5 by 5 inches (W x H x D) in the box. It's also backed by a 90-day warranty.
