GE 26993GE1 900MHz Cordless Telephone with Caller ID & Digital Messaging

Product Description

Amazon.com Review
The GE 26993GE1 is a 900 MHz cordless phone, digital answering system, and caller ID with call waiting, all in one beautifully compact and sturdy unit.

You access the phone's functions from either the handset's backlit LCD or from the large, intuitive keypad on the base. We were able to use the phone's basic functions without consulting the owner's manual, thanks to a review button with voice prompts that aid in setup and basic operations. For the phone's more complex functions, the detailed manual was very helpful.

If you subscribe to caller ID, the LCD on the handset tells you the time, day, name, and number of an incoming call. It also keeps track of the number of calls stored in the caller ID log and indicates whether the call has already been reviewed. To access the log, press the CID review button to scroll through the list. To return a call, simply press the dial button. Editing and deleting caller ID calls require only the touch of a button. If you are on the phone when a new call comes in, press the flash button to put the current person on hold and to answer the incoming call.

The digital answering system's controls are conveniently located on both the base and the handset. Basic functions such as play, review, skip, and erase are included. A message indicator on the base displays at a glance how many messages you have. You can also check messages remotely.

The 26993GE1 stores up to 10 numbers in speed-dial memory in addition to the 40 caller ID records. Names and numbers are easily stored by using the memory button and LCD. To dial a stored number, press the memory button and the memory location (zero to nine).

In our tests of the 26993GE1, we were disappointed to hear background static with the handset held at a variety of positions and distances from the base, but especially near physical barriers, such as walls and other electronic equipment. With the handset within 200 feet of the base, we could hold a normal conversation, but beyond that distance, static became overwhelming. Pressing the channel button improved the signal only when the cause of the interference was another radio device on the same channel. --Emily Bakko

5 out of 5 stars It was good for me.......2003-08-09

I have had this phone for about 3 years. It's been great. Considering that last year I threw it against my wall and smashed it into three pieces, when I put it back together it still worked fine. Now, it is starting to give me problems with the battery life, but if you'd been broken in three pieces, would you charge properly? I don't live in a high voltage area, so it picks up just fine. I can say this, it's definately not fragile!

2 out of 5 stars Good for shorter duration of time.......2003-05-01

As stated by < >,I faced the "same problem" just after the 1 year Warranty period expired :(
The phone has decent functionality and one would think that a GE product would be reliable, but we've been frustrated by the buttons on the handset, which quickly became unreliable. One has to mash on the "3" button repeatedly to get it to register, and the "redial" button is useless. This is not a matter of wear and tear because we hardly ever used the redial button.

1 out of 5 stars Nice looking phone - too bad it doesn't work!.......2003-03-15

Three months after we bought this phone we started having troubles. The phone would ring and we'd pick it up and hit the "talk" button. However, the phone would just beep - unable to locate the right the channel to begin the call. So we reread the manual and learned to hit the channel button after using the talk button, but to no avail. By the time we pressed the different buttons, the caller would be leaving a message and we couldn't even talk to them! Happens two out of every three incoming calls! We're looking for a new phone.

2 out of 5 stars Also had trouble with keypad.......2003-02-28

Sturdy, pleasant-looking phone that functioned well for more than a year -- however, now, the "Talk" button no longer works, and some of the number keys are also difficult, sometimes registering a number twice, or not at all. If they would have fixed this flaw - seems to be widespread after reading other reviews - it would be a fine phone. Good timing on GE's behalf - phone goes downhill just as the warranty expires.

1 out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!.......2003-01-17

Yes, it may be cheap, but we have all heard the saying "You get what you pay for!" This phone worked well for a few months, but went downhill fast. Now, I never had an issue with clarity within the house, but once I steped outside it got fuzzy. (I cannot walk to my mailbox, which is not that far from my front door.) Anyway, the "3" button was the first to go. It got to the point that when you pressed the button it would not register at first, so you would press harder, which ultimately would make it register not only once, but three or four times! This became really frustrating, but I could deal with it until I found a better phone. Eventually though the "TALK" button started malfunctioning, which basically made my phone a giant paperweight. When you can't turn the phone on, it usually means you need to buy a new one! Anyway, I recently replaced the phone with a nice Panasonic 2.4 GHz/Fax combo, which works wonderfully. I also purchased a Uniden headset phone, which is also 2.4 GHz, and that was the best phone purchase of all and it was under $80.
