Amazon.com Review

The Uniden EXS9995 two-line cordless phone provides answering system organization for your busy family or home office. It combines everything you need, including a digital answering machine and compatibility with caller ID with call waiting services, into one easy-to-operate unit.

Before testing the Uniden EXS9995, we charged it for the recommended 15 to 20 hours. An additional handset battery (not included) can be charged in the base so there will always be a spare. A laminated quick guide is included for convenient reference for basic phone operations. The sturdy handset has an intuitive, backlit keypad and an LCD screen. Indicators let you know which line is in use. The conference and intercom buttons allow you to add a third and fourth party to conversations. Press the clock button and a digital voice announces the time and day.

Up to 30 numbers can be stored in memory and shared by both lines. We were easily able to store a number using the LCD and arrow keys on the handset. To dial a stored number, we simply pressed the memory button, found the number on the LCD and selected a line. If you subscribe to caller ID or call waiting, these functions are also performed using the handset and LCD. There is an 80-number caller ID memory. The handset can be positioned faceup on the base for quick caller identification.

The answering system operates independently for each phone line and the functions are located on the base. Two switches on the side of the base allow you to set the recording time for each line to one minute, four minutes, or announce only. Up to 30 minutes of messages and 10 minutes of a conversation can be recorded. You can access your messages remotely by setting up a PIN. Its convenient, large buttons help make the answering system easy to operate.

In our tests of the Uniden EXS9995, we were able to take the phone outside over 1,000 feet from the base and did not detect voice breakup at any point along the way. Although the range was impressive, we did notice a slight background hum even at close range, but it wasn't enough to be distracting.

With an included belt clip, headset compatibility, and extensive features, the Uniden EXS9995 covers your home answering system needs. --Emily Bakko

5 out of 5 stars Best Of All Worlds.......2005-02-04

Unfortunately, I'm afraid this phone represents a one-of-a-kind combination. Fortunately, I got mine while they're still available.

It is a 2-line phone that includes an all digital 30 minute answering system, 80 number Caller ID memory, a time/day stamp, 40 number memory dialing, and 3-line backlit display.

Additional features include a speakerphone, headset compatibility (headset included), a detachable belt clip, 4-way conferencing and a second battery (included) charging compartment in the base...this not only keeps the base unit powered in a power failure, but it also can be swapped out to the hand unit.

However, one of the most important features to me is the fact that it can be used as a wall phone. There are a number of phones available with similar features, but not one could be used as a wall phone. Since I wanted to use the phone in my kitchen, this Uniden model was the only one available from anyone, anywhere.

As far as performance...all features range from good to excellent!

I am very pleased with all aspects of this phone.

1 out of 5 stars Dead on Arrival.......2001-12-17

This is the second time I've had a Uniden phone. The first one lasted just a few months. I should have known better; this one was dead on arrival. After charging for 24 hours, the handset worked, but the speaker never worked. Given the nuisance of returning defective consumer electronics, I'll stick with Panasonic in the future.

3 out of 5 stars OK phone but answering machine needs work........2001-03-09

I like the lighted keypad, and the sound of the receiver seems good. One nice touch for me is that when you are done with a conversation and hang up, the time of the call remains on the receiver's display for a few seconds so that you can see how long the conversation was afterwards (as with long distance calls). Some phones I've used blank the display out as soon as you hang up, and I usually don't think of checking until it's too late. The answering machine is the weak link here. Its recording sound is not very good--too "digital" for my taste. It's recording volume also changes noticeably within a sentence, and words or numbers are sometimes distorted and hard to discern (at least for my ears). Also, though it has 30 minutes of recording time, it's only 15 minutes per phone line, even if one phone line gets more calls than the other. I would not recommend this phone if you're really picky about an answering machine's sound quality, though it may be acceptable to many.

3 out of 5 stars When will they make a perfect phone..........2001-03-05

1. Each memory location can only store up to 20 digits, not good for calling card type numbers which require about 28 or more digits. 2. Both lines can't answer incoming calls... if you get calls on both lines at the same time, answering service will only answer the first call while just ringing for the second line. 3. Spread spectrum security but only 2 digits for remote code access to the answering machine even though there is a 4 digit display... This is only from 4 days of usage. It's an OK phone.

4 out of 5 stars Great product, but with minor annoyances.......2001-02-18

After weeks of searching, this phone was the only one that came close to my requirements.

The range and areas you can take the phone are unbelievable. It works happily and without break up in my building, made of brick and concrete, and works in areas that I thought would not be possible inluding part way into the basement! The physical design is also great, the handset is about the perfect size for holding, and the base is also well designed. Functionality of the phone is also great, with one exception (covered later). The design of the keypad on the handset, although making some selections a little slow, does a lot to help stop you from making mistakes.

Being able to choose between allowing callers to record one or four minutes of message, and a remote message collection function that lets you know if there are no new messages by not picking up after the second ring is excellent. Having different greetings on each line is also pleasing.

The second battery in the base is exellent because it serves as a back up battery if the one in the handset dies, and as a backup power supply on the base if the mains go off. Battery life of both is also excellent, the handset going happily for up to two weeks without being put in the base to charge. Being able to have a two hour conversation when the mains were off really impressed me.

The possibility to have a headset connected with the handset makes conversations on the phone much easier, and allows you to have both hands free while you talk. The base and handset being able to each handle separate calls on the two lines is also excellent. Individually turning on and off answering for each line is another excellent feature.

One thing I have not noticed is the hum that other reviews have spoken about, although I live in Europe and our different mains supply and different power supply I use almost certainly explains that. There is 230volts here and I have the phone operating at 1 volt above its rated level (this is no problem) on the different to provided power supply. (shhh though, these phones are illegal to use in Europe because they operate in a section of the frequency spectrum where mobile phones in Euope operate, and its transmission power exceeds what is permitted in Europe. I got it through a friend because the corldless phones availabe in Europe are three times the price with less than half the functionality, and therefore pure crap next to this phone)

Now for the disappointments. Setting a name into the memory is horrible, and why I don't give this phone 5 stars. The keypad is not used like a mobile phone, you have only the up and down keys to scroll through all capital, small, and special characters to select the character each time. It would have been little extra effort from the programmers to use the keypad properly for this. The sound quality of both the handset and base are slightly disappointing, and you do have to speak up a little more on the handset than usual for the other person to hear you properly. The base can also handle a call as hands free, but the other person can't hear you unless you are almost shouting or hold the base right at your mouth. I expected better from Uniden on these. The other thing I don't like is that although you are able to record a conversation, that recording is only available in the phone digitally, and the phone puts in a beep every 15 seconds, so the other person knows you are recording the conversation. The solution to this is to make up your own cable that can go to the headset and a recorder, so recording a conversation is much more discrete.

Despite the minor disappointments, this phone is still the best overall I have found anywhere and at the price, you wont get better. I can fully recomend this phone to someone who is interested in it, and feel people can expect and get a great phone.

Amazon.com Review

The Uniden EXS9966 two-line cordless phone helps organize your busy family or home office. It supports two lines, three- and four-way conference calling, and caller ID with call waiting--all in an easy-to-operate unit.

Before testing the Uniden EXS9966, we charged it for the recommended 15 to 20 hours, which is longer than most rechargeable batteries require. A spare handset battery (not included) can be charged in the base. A laminated quick guide is included for convenient reference to basic phone operations.

In our tests of the Uniden EXS9966, we were able to take the phone outside over 700 feet from the base before detecting any voice breakup. Although the range was impressive, we did notice a slight background humming even at close range, but it wasn't excessively distracting. We were able to take the phone behind walls and near electronic equipment without losing signal strength.

With the additional keypad on the base, the handset and the base can be used at the same time on separate lines. If the handset is already in use on one line, you can use the base station to make or receive calls on the other line. Indicators let you know which line is in use. The controls that operate these features are intuitive.

The sturdy handset has a lighted keypad and LCD. The conference and intercom buttons allow you to add a third or fourth party to a conversation. To add a party to line one, press the hold button, press the line two button, and dial the number of the person you want to include. To bring the first person back into the conversation, press the conference button. A fourth person, at either the handset or base, can also join your conversation.

You can store up to 40 speed-dial numbers in memory. We were easily able to store a number using the LCD and arrow keys on the handset. To dial a stored number, we pressed the memory button, found the number on the LCD, and selected a line. The handset's LCD also provides caller ID information, if you subscribe to caller ID or caller ID with call waiting. You can position the handset face up on the base for convenient caller identification on both lines. The EXS9966 also has a generous 80-number caller ID log. --Emily Bakko

1 out of 5 stars This phone stinks --.......2001-07-31

Difficult to program, terrible display and little small buttons that are hard to read.

Voice quality is good, and size is good. But I definitely wouldn't recommend this phone.

2 out of 5 stars Recharging is a problem.......2001-07-16

I've had this phone for about 2 years and have found many problems regarding charging. When I first got it, I found that it was wise to recharge the phone every night by keeping it in it's cradle, or it would not work the next day all day, but it didn't take very long to charge. The sound quality is excellent and it is comfortable to use and press the buttons. The charging problem got progressively worse and worse, so now I'm looking for another phone for my bedroom. I have this same model for our downstairs phone and haven't had any problems. That one is about 4 years old and I've had no problems with it at all. I think the Uniden quality on this went down.

1 out of 5 stars Can't use an answering machine with it!!!!!.......2001-06-26

So I bought this phone for my parents and they have an AT&T digital answering machine. With this phone hooked up near it, it caused a loud screeching and whining sound in the answering machine (recording and playing messages). After calling Uniden, their tech support said that this model phone was not compatible with an answering machine. What the problem is (after some testing) is that if the power pack (or the phone power pack combination) is plugged in near other devices, it causes interference with them. With the phone and answering machine plugged into different ends of the house (different electrical outlets and different phone jacks), everything worked fine. Even when taking a very long phone cord and having the phone line go through the answering machine, but plugged into different electrical outlets, it was fine. When plugged into close electrical outlets, there was interference. The closer the outlets, the more interference. There is no place that mentioned this and tech support at Uniden pointed out the section in the manual that said "Keep away from other electrical devices." They said that means that it can't be used with an answering machine. I was very disappointed. If you have no answering machine, and never plan on having one, it worked ok otherwise.

3 out of 5 stars Talk button, battery problems - otherwise good.......2001-06-20

I own this phone, and I know several other people who also own it. One thing I notice about our phones is that it's *really* easy to brush the Talk button with your cheek while you're talking and hang up on the person you're talking to. It's actually extremely common and annoying - to the point where I believe I've hung up on people accidentally 30-40 times so far this year, literally! I bought my mom this phone as well, and she has the same problem. The battery's somewhat limited, sometimes I notice that the phone does not recharge correctly when I put it in the base, and is dead when I try to use it. Overall though, it's otherwise a nice phone. Sound quality's good, range is terrific. But I wouldn't recommend it until Uniden recesses the Talk button.

4 out of 5 stars Uniden Review.......2001-03-20

I purchased this phone based on the reviews and from what I've heard about Uniden. Compared to some of the other brands, you do get a lot for the money in terms of features. Overall, the phone seems to be great but I've only had it for a few days. I do have two complaints/concerns ... I've noticed when I talk on the phone there seems to be a slight echoing of my voice which doesn't bother me all that much because I seem to forget about it after a few minutes have passed. The only other complaint I have is that there seems to be a slight buzzing in the background and doesn't disappear even if I change channels. I've moved the phone to different locations and it's the same.

3 out of 5 stars Worked in the office that made the answering machine chip.......2003-06-25

OK, so this is true about the 9800. This model looks similar, but you would have to take it apart to see if there is also a Lucent DSP in the answering machine part of the 9980. I agree that our speech coder quality is sub par. I have owned a few Uniden phones that used our DSP, and I do not like the quality of the recording - you have to play it several times for some calls, and sometimes you still can't make everything out. I don't know if other companies made a better answering machine DSP, but I would rather use an old tape machine. The 900MHz part works very well - I have had no problem. I HAVE had the same experience as others here - this handset design has a Talk button that is very easy to hit with your ear while talking - others in my family were so frustrated with this feature that they stopped using the phone. Since I had a small part in the history of the phone, I continue to use it. The division I worked for disbanded a few years ago, so no more or our answering machine DSPs will be produced (thankfully).

5 out of 5 stars uniden cordless phone enthusiast from B'ham AL........2002-07-26

I own four uniden cordless phones, three of them are 900 mhz. and one is a 2.4 model. You can hardly own a better phone. I never hear any interference, I never have one problem with clarity in either the answering machine or the handset, it never drops calls, or loses volume during use. And I mean any of them. I have the EXS 9800, the EXT. 1965, the EXS 9980, and the TRU 2.4. As it is with all cordless phones you do have to push "talk" to use it, if it is off the base, but in answering it when it rings it does have an "auto-talk" feature which allows you to merely pick it up and begin talking and all of that is clearly explained in the manual, as are all the phone's other features. Not liking to push "talk" before using it is like not liking to start your car before driving it. Come on, we have to put some effort into it. I can recommend using the headset with it, it is a great feature that eliminates neck strain tremendously. I use all of these phones in my business and I spend anywhere from 4 to 6 hrs. a day on the phone. One thing you have to have is a decent phone service, we have Bellsouth in our area, and they provide great phone service, so don't blame an inferior service or bad home wiring on the phone if you hear either static or interference. I live in an area where there is so much radio activity until my son's remote car will just take off across the floor without anyone controlling it, yet this activity never causes problems with any of my Uniden phones, never!! I am construction contractor and I use my EXS 9800 on one of my construction sights without a hitch,--ever!! These phones have an intercom feature which is great for contacting others at the base location and again the sound and clarity is perfect. My sister has an EXS 9800 that she dropped in a sink full of water, but after drying it thoroughly it worked as good as ever! I say if you have a problem with a Uniden phone start checking everything else besides the phone, even yourself!

2 out of 5 stars poor sound quality.......2002-02-12

Nice features, but recorded messages are almost unintelligible, and the sound level of the handset is too low. You can increase the volume, but then it reverts to the low level volume for the next call. I'm now looking for a new phone because I'm tired of playing messages 5 times trying to understand them. A friend of mine has a Uniden and he has the same complaints.

4 out of 5 stars Better sound..........2001-12-03

We bought this phone after my wife insisted that our standard Uniden 900 Mhz sound quality wasn't good enough, so we opted for the digital spread spectrum model. It's definitely an upgrade. We have the 9980 model, which has an excellent digital answering machine and one line. The battery in the phone itself is a bit weak (If you forget to hang it up it dies). My favorite factor with all of the Uniden models is that they have a very tactile feel. When you push a button, you know it, no mush. It's the only brand on the market that seems to have that feel -- sort of the way nothing used to feel like an IBM keyboard, if you know what I mean. It's also a comfortable and lightweight phone, not too small like many phones nowadays (who wants a teensy phone that has a microphone two inches from your mouth?).
It would also be nice if you could just dial numbers and answer the phone without having to push talk first!

All in all, I like it plenty, and it's also the top-rated cordless brand in Consumer Reports.

Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Solid phone, some poorly designed features.......2001-11-25

This phone delivers good sound quality and reception in a solid package. I have two design gripes:

1) there isn't any obvious way to adjust the ringer volume

2) the dialing sequence seems to have a timing dependency. Sometimes, I dial a number and press "talk" and the phone dials (as I'd expect). Sometimes I dial the number and press talk, and the number disappears so I have to start over from scratch. Very frustrating. This makes the phone unusable for slow dialers.

You can position the handset faceup on the base for convenient caller identification on both lines. The EXS9966 also has a generous 80-number caller ID log. --Emily Bakko

Additional convenience features include call waiting, 40-number memory dialing, speakerphone, and a dual keypad that allows you to dial your call from either the handset or the base. 3 out of 5 stars Insight into battery problems with the unit.......2007-06-13

I have owned a Uniden EXS9966 since July 2001 and have gained some insight into the battery problems that can plague this phone. One issue I suspect is that the battery charging circuits on this phone (for both the handset and the spare battery compartment) are very simple and likely to overcharge the nicad battery pack if it is left to charge for long periods of time.

I made the mistake of leaving the spare battery pack in the base as a backup instead of taking it out after 24 hours of charging. I damaged several battery packs doing this until I realized that it is not safe to do this.

I have had better luck with the battery in the phone handset - probably because I take the handset off the base station at the start of each day and only put it back late in the evening. I suspect leaving the phone charging on the base unit when not using it for making phone calls is likely to damage the battery pack through overcharging.

In short Uniden uses simplistic battery charging strategies in this unit that can damage batteries depending on consumer usage patterns.

If you need spare battery packs I have found them on ebay at much better prices than at the uniden store.

5 out of 5 stars I love this phone so much I bought three! 8 stars out of 5!!!.......2005-07-29

I counsel people on the phone, and talk on the phone a lot for a long time. Even though this phone is now obsolete, I just purchased 2 to replace my aging one.

I made a mistake by not just buying another when the first uniden began to wear out. I have dropped the handset thousands of times, got it wet, got garden soil into the handset and otherwise abused it and it still works, but not as well as it used to.

But the battery still lasts forever, even when it's been off the hook for a couple of days.

To replace it unfortunately we bought the 'state of the art' panasonic KX TGA 270S with multiline, multihandset operation, but poor battery life and the poor signal even outside in my yard, made me fed up with them very quickly. I hate those phones. I WISH I HAD SENT THEM BACK.

The Uniden works even 3 or more BLOCKS from my house -- more if there's nothing in between the house and me. (I've driven around my neighborhood with this phone, using it like a short range cell phone)

The only reason I bought the panasonics was that at the time, uniden didn't make a multihandset, 2 phone line phone. This phone is such a solid thing, I just decided to go back to it. Eventually when new features I can't live without make me, I will buy another Uniden phone.

In addition to the above, the phone is just well thought out.

EG: The ability to have a battery in the base so that power outages don't put you out of action is nice, and that's the same battery that goes in the phone, so if I talk for 4 or 5 hours, then I get another call, I have a back up battery that charges in the base.

Other than my Palm organizer, my uniden is one of the best products I've EVER purchased.

The speaker phone is loud and clear... It's a great phone. I could go on, but I have a call... On my Uniden...

2 out of 5 stars If this were a car, it be a gas guzzl'n one.......2003-01-18

I really like the features of this phone.
However, because of the power drain on the battery
(I have 2), I'd replace it in a heartbeat.

5 out of 5 stars Solid, full featured phone.......2002-07-17

While it is a little clunky, it has all the features I needed in a phone. 2 line, Spread spectrum, Headset Jack, Caller ID/Waiting, Battery swappable. The speakerphone is decent for waiting on hold, and the only complaint I have is that the handset is not smaller. Sound quality is good enough to overcome that shortcoming. And it doesn't mess with my wireless network -- an added bonus!

1 out of 5 stars Bad Hand Set.......2002-04-08

The 1,2, and 4 buttons on the unit failed after minimal usage. I also own the same model without the digital recorder. This unit experienced the same problem. Uniden service claims that they never heard of this problem before. Not likely if both of my units have the same problem. The only option is to buy a... replacement handset. I have a better idea. Buy a new system from a more better supplier.

Amazon.com Review

Uniden, the world's largest manufacturer of quality cordless telephones, presents a wealth of features in the EXS 9600. The Uniden EXS 9600 cordless telephone offers 900 MHz digital spread spectrum technology for greater range, clarity, and privacy; call waiting/caller ID; and other extras that make this phone an attractive package.

Setting up the phone for basic operation was easy--we just inserted the battery pack, plugged in the AC adapter/recharger, and connected the phone cable to the standard RJ-11 jack. We recommend that you allow the battery pack to charge for an uninterrupted 20 hours before using the phone.

You control the features through the base unit's front-mounted button and side-mounted switch; the handset has an LCD display and 11 buttons in addition to the usual 0-9, #, and *. You may need to consult the manual to learn how to use some features, such as storing and editing numbers for memory dialing or setting the caller ID options. Still, the procedures are consistent and explained well in the documentation.

In our tests, we placed the unit in a basement apartment in an urban environment. The handset functioned flawlessly to about 600 feet from the base (inside a car, no less), where it began to cut in and out. At about 1,400 feet, the handset beeped, indicating total loss of contact with the base. Long distance and local calls sounded as clear as any corded phone, and the battery lasted over four hours with continuous use.

With its full suite of features and its crystal-clear digital-spread-spectrum sound and security, this is an impressive cordless telephone. --Mike Brown, June 1999

4 out of 5 stars awesome!.......2003-08-05

we've had this phone for a long time, and its served us well. I go walking in a nearby neighborhood frequently, and the phone actually still can call etc. for a full 1/2 mile, which isn't terribly much to walk, but its close enough to run within that radius. My only complain is the battery power isn't that long. I'm a teenager, and it dies kinda frequently when I talk to my friends too long. Of course, I frequently talk over 4 hours, so that may not be an issue with alot of people.

Amazon.com Product Description

For clarity and convenience, consider the EXAI3985 with a digital answering system. Its 900 MHz operation with auto scanning helps ensure that you get the best channel, while digital spread spectrum technology provides clear sound and longer range. Dual keypads on handset and base permit convenient dialing no matter where the handset may be. (Paging helps to recover a misplaced handset, and the intercom lets you communicate from room to room.) The unit's memory is programmable to 40 speed-dial numbers, and a 70-number caller ID memory is readily accessible on a "holographic" LCD.

With both speakerphone and headset compatibility, you'll enjoy the widest range of hands-free opportunities. The microchip technology answering system offers 15 minutes of digital recording time, displays the name and number of the caller, the time and date, and the number of messages you have collected. Dial in to access your messages when you're away from home. The ringer is adjustable to assorted melodies and distinctive ring. The phone is also wall mountable for saving space.

1 out of 5 stars Flimsy and it died quickly.......2004-04-01

I got this phone directly from Uniden and it died after 5 months use. Like the previous post, nothing in the troubleshooting section worked, and it was out of warranty (90 days), so in the garbage can it went. Also, the casing on this phone is pretty cheap... it looked to be in worse condition than my 7 year old Sanyo phone.

1 out of 5 stars It died in less than 6 months........2002-11-30

It was a fine phone, while it lasted. After about 6 months, it worked only sporadically, then died altogether. I followed all the suggestions in the troubleshooting section of the manual, but nothing worked. I won't be buying another Uniden.

4 out of 5 stars Do something with caller ID information.......2002-04-01

There are very few phones that actually do something with the caller id information, other than just display it. This phone allows up to 30 names and numbers to the memory list. Each can have their own ring tone. Now when a call comes in with the standard tone - I know it isn't someone on my special list - I may not make the extra effort needed to get to the phone. The sound quality is good on both ends and over the speaker phone. The interface/set up is very easy.

On the minus side: when a call comes in and if the number is matched to someone in the phone memory list, the selected ring tone will sound - but the name displayed is from the Caller ID info - not the name programmed into memory. 50% of the calls I get are from numbers behind PBX exchanges (or equivelent) where the caller id name information is generic ("California Call", "Wireless Call", etc.).

I'd recommend this phone to my friends - but this isn't the "end all" phone for me ... I'll keep looking at new phones with more caller ID features.

4 out of 5 stars The programmable rings make the phone.......2001-11-30

It's a trip. You don't need to look at the caller ID. All you have to do is take a few minutes to program the memory dials and the ringers that go with it and your off and running. Now I know when twinkle twinkle little star is playing it's my mom.

ON the serious side. The features are nice/functional and it is a great product for the price you pay.

4 out of 5 stars I want more information.......2001-11-24

I like the features that are described.
I would like opinions on the sound quality of the answering machine outgoing and incoming messages.
I would like to know that is does not lose messages in power outages.
I would like to know it's resistance to electrical surges.
I would like to know if it's wall mount fits a standard old wall mount plate or is a new custom mount.

Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars best ever for sound and range - period.......2003-04-24

I have yet to find a another digital cordless (new or old) that is as clear and range receptive as this one. It's the only phone I can take with me across the street knowing I'll be able to take a call and make intelligible conversation. It's been dropped many times over the last 4 years and still it keeps "ticking" perfect. God how I wish Uniden could make a new phone with same sound quality and range as this one. They don't and it makes me sad. Long live the EXS9600.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent phone but lacks a mute button.......2001-07-31

Great phone, good reception, good range. Durable, easy to use, reliable.

Would be nicer still if it also had a mute button and a lighted key pad for use at night.

Still, this is the best cordless phone I've owned.

2 out of 5 stars Sound quality great but the rest was horrible........1999-08-12

I was very impressed with the sound quality and lack of interference, but the constant trouble with just turning the phone on caused me not only to have it replaced once but canned in the long run. The performance was fine through 2-3 weeks but after that both phones I recieved would not turn on when you hit the "TALK" button the first time. It usually took about three times before it would actually work. Needless to say this was very annoying. This is my second bad experience with a Uniden phone. Take my advice, pass this one up!

5 out of 5 stars Top-notch phone!.......1999-08-07

I highly recommend this phone. I've experienced no static and great range. I especially like the belt clip that can be attached to the phone. This phone has a lot of extras for the price. I had purchased a Sony cordless DSS phone earlier, with less features than the Uniden EXS9600, for more money. The Sony was terrible. It experienced static and kept cutting out. I couldn't even carry on a conversation on the Sony. The Uniden EXS9600 is easy to use and can be stored in the base unit either face up or down.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Old ones are better.......2003-09-22

When Uniden introduced this phone years ago, I purchased it and was very please with the unit. Uniden was one of the first companies to have a backup battery in the base so the cordless unit can continue to work even with power outages. This phone performed well until one day, my wife accidently left the phone on the roof of our car. It did not fall off of course until I reach 50 MPH on the highway. I saw the phone bounce and come apart in my rear view mirror. We U-turned and I picked up the pieces. Only the battery cover came off and the battery popped out. No one seemed to run over the phone, battery yes. When I put it back together it seemed to work because I hit talk and it displayed talk but, we were of course too far away.
I got home that night and it worked. Now that is a tuff phone. I ordered another battery from Uniden and got another year and a half out of it before it began to act up.
So I tried, real hard to replace the phone. I wanted one with a speaker phone in the handset. Only 2.4 and 5.8 were available and none of them got the distance the old 900 DSS got. None were as clear. When I contacted Uniden to maybe get a refurbished one, none were available. I tried V-tech, other Unidens, Panasonic, ATT, none worked more then 300 feet away. Even Consumer reports tells you that the 900 MHz DSS gets the best distance and clarity.
I finally saw my old model throught Amazon, ordered it, got it and we are back in business.
This phone goes easily up to 1/4 mile plus from my home. I took the new phone, put it on my old base, the system reset itself and it worked. I decided to use the new base with the new phone.
Now I am looking for the older models with the keypad on the base and the single unit 900 MHZ DSS units.
In short, the newer 2.4 GHZ and 5.8 GHZ is a step backwards to me. They claimed you get distance but, no way. Maybe someday, they will improve their technology so one can be more then 300 feet from the base.
Thanks for reading this.

2 out of 5 stars Uniden EXS 9800.......2001-11-12

Good reception, nice features, but poor digital recording playback quality. Microphone finally gave out after 1.5 yrs and decided not to buy another Uniden with this technology.

4 out of 5 stars Great price! Great feature set. Great value........2000-07-17

My minimium requirement was a Digital/900MHz SSP phone, with digital answerer. All similar equipped phones sell for $100+ (i.e. Sony, Siemens, Panasonic). I considered the 2.4GHz, but that wasn't a requirement (for me). I recommend you look into the security associated with a SSP phone, especially as a ham-radio buddy showed how easy it is to "listen-in" on cordless phone coversations!

The EXS9800 has worked great, as I've had it for one week now. The speakerphone was like a freebie, compared to other mfg phones. Frankly, the next best price for this phone was [more than the price on Amazon.com], which I could find on the internet, so kudos to Amazon for the GREAT price! The "beep" is fairly loud, but my phone is in my family room, so that's a "non-issue" for me.

Every phone review (here on Amazon) had their supporters and naysayers (including this very phone, which is pretty obvious if you're reading this). It really isn't clear which phone mfg is best, as they ALL seem to have had bad experiences with buyers, ymmv.

My 2nd choice would be the Siemens 2415 (2.4GHz SSP)...; be careful, though, as there appears to be a large number of "refurbished" units for-sale, which imho must be indicative of bad quality-control (or something like that, ymmv).

Good luck.

3 out of 5 stars Lot's of features, but a few issues as well..........2000-07-07

This is a good phone... could have been a great phone if it weren't for several annoying problems with the design. There are many great features to this phone, but you can get info. on all of them from the product description or from the Uniden web site. What they don't tell you I've written below.

I've had this phone for about 9 months and I've overcome most of it's issues. The range for this phone is nice (I've taken it down to the park which is a 1 1/2 blocks from my house). The issues I still struggle with are as follows:

First, the "talk" button is a problem. It's large and easy to depress. Anyone with a cheek is bound to cut off their colleague, family or friend mid-sentence when positioning the phone between your shoulder and your ear.

Second, the base has a speakerphone but no hold button. It's easy to answer the phone when you can't find the handset... just remember that you have to hang up the base after you have located the handset. As an added bonus, if you bring the handset too close to the speakerphone with them both on, you will get the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Third, there's no hold or mute button on the handset. The hot item on the other end of the line WILL hear that toilet flushing if you aren't careful.

Fourth, Call Waiting Caller-ID is nice, but saving the number is a pain because you have to add a 1 for long distance numbers. When editing the number, the additional digit can't be inserted, so you end up re-typing the whole number again. Like I said, nice.

Fifth, sound quality for the answering device is pathetic. Maybe Uniden was trying to make a nostalgia play by making the answering system sound like two tin cans and string.

Those are the big ones. I got a headset to deal with the hands-free issue and the other issues I just live with. Overall, I think there are better phones out there.

3 out of 5 stars GOOD SOUND QUALITY EXCEPT FOR ANSWERING MACHINE.......2000-01-28

THE BASE IS VERY AWKWARD AND BULKY. SOUND QUALITY IS GOOD BUT THE ANSWERING MACHINE SOUND QUALITY IS TERRIBLE FOR INCOMING AND OUTGOING MESSAGES. THAT'S THE BIGGEST COMPLAINT.
