Uniden's EXAI-978i cordless phone provides 900 MHz analog signal operation, caller ID and call waiting capability, and an integrated digital answering system. All call features are accessed through the handset, including 10 programmable speed dial locations, last number redial, and volume control. Caller ID functions are displayed on the handset's three-line backlit LCD, capable of storing up to 30 names and numbers for future use.

The base unit houses a digital answering system. Answering system features include remote message retrieval, a visual message counter, and new message waiting indicator with optional audible alert tone. The Uniden EXAI978i is hearing aid and headset compatible (headset sold separately), and comes with a belt-clip for hands-free operation.

A 900 MHz analog cordless phone from Uniden, the EXAI 978 comes with a number of useful features, including caller ID with call waiting compatibility and an integrated digital answering system. An autoscan features automatically detects the channel with the least interference, while handset and ringer volume controls allow you to easily adjust the phone's settings to your liking.

The digital answering system provides up to 13 minutes of recording time and features full remote operation, allowing you to check messages while away from home or from the office. The maximum message length can be set either to one or four minutes, and you can choose from prerecorded or personal outgoing messages. Voice prompts in Spanish, French, or English help guide you through setup, while play/stop, skip, delete, and repeat keys help you navigate through your messages. A memo record feature is provided, and a similar conversation record feature lets you record important conversations.

Wall-mountable, the EXAI 978 is also headset compatible and comes with a belt clip for hands-free operation. A page button on the base makes finding a lost handset quick and painless, while the menu-driven handset LCD makes operation easy. Caller ID/ call waiting compatible, the EXAI 978 can store up to 30 numbers in the caller ID memory, and the display and dial feature lets you easily scroll through the list of calls and then dial with the touch of a button.

Up to 10 memory locations are available for the most frequently dialed numbers, and a RocketDial feature allows you to dial the most important number simply by pressing the RocketDial button. An auto-talk function lets you answer calls simply by removing the phone from its cradle, while the flash/talk button lets you switch to an incoming call (requires subscription to a fee-based service) and put the current conversation on hold. A redial button lets you easily call the last outgoing number.

The phone supports both tone and pulse dialing modes. It is backed with a one-year warranty on both parts and labor.

I wanted a 900 mhz phone instead of the very small 5.8 ghz phones. I have wireless network and it works just fine. If your looking for an above average 900 mhz phone this phone is just great.

unbelievably good value.......2006-08-24

I can't imagine what caused all the negative reviews on this site. After giving up on several other phones, including Uniden's own 5.8GHz phone whose signal won't penetrate even a single wall, I finally decided to return to el-cheapo 900MHz, nice-long-wavelength analog technology and I was so glad I did! I bought one for myself and tried it, then I bought another for my daughter in college, and now I'm going to buy a third one to replace another inferior 900MHz unit I own (another brand). This unit is crystal clear, it has incredible range, and neither of the two units I bought has ever failed in the year my family has owned them. Two of them work fine in the same house (they don't interfere). And the headphone jack, which is very important to both my wife and me, works great. Most units have speakers whose impedances are mismatches for most headsets, and so you get good volume in the handset but terribly low volume in the headset. Not so with this unit - it sounds great in both the handset AND the headset (headset is NOT included). And on top of all that, the answering machine works great and it is very clear and easy to use. I couldn't recommend this unit more! And it's so inexpensive!

The phone has too much static unless you're sitting right next to the console, in which case you might has well have a corded phone.

Worst battery I have ever seen.......2006-05-07

Battery discharges only in 30 minutes of talking. I personally never recommend this item. Answering machine is good but battery is worst.

Static and crappy battery.......2005-08-15

When I first bought this phone about six months ago, I thought I was getting a good deal, but I was wrong. The phone picked up a lot of static and the battery has a very short life, only a couple hours off the charger then it won't work.

You get what you pay for.......2005-04-27

This phone is overpriced at anything except free. I bought a Uniden product because of other wonderful experiences I have had with them. This product is a definite exception. The phone quality is alright, but I find myself frequently asking people to repeat themselves because the loudest volume still is not very clear. The worst "feature" though is remote answering machine access. I cannot check messages when calling from a cell phone and I can check messages about 2 out of 10 tries when calling from another land line. I wish I had bought another phone. See also reviews for this model number but without the dash between EXAI and 978.
