Good, but..............2007-07-03

The system is as advertised, and works very well. It has good reception at reasonable distance from the main unit. I found the setup and instructions to be a bit confusing, but got through them. We've been using it a few weeks now, but still have to reference the instructions from time to time due to the lack of understandable markings for the buttons to get or delete messages, etc. In addition, the screen is a bit difficult to see from an angle, which tends to be annoying.
Overall we like the units, and we'll finally get used to which buttons do what. In the meantime, the directions are kept close by.

When doing intercom, it would be nice if the handsets could auto answer, instead of having to answer by pushing the button. Also can only intercom one handset at a time. Apparently, when doing the off-network, handset-direct-to-handset communication feature, you can only talk to one handset at a time, unlike regular FRS radios. When would you use this feature, anyway??? The range must be minimal. I've never tried it, though. Hey, it seems like a nice phone but have only had it a month.

Uniden TRU9485 is TERRIFIC.......2007-06-17

I replaced 3 hard wired AT&T, Panasonic and Uniden phones (The Uniden had an answering machine which failed after 6+ years). The wireless Uniden TRU9485 is WONDERFUL. The base unit is very user friendly, easy to program and has excellent quality voice. The address book feature is the best I've seen or used. You quickly go to the section of the book based upon the first letter in your look-up and quickly page to the correct entry. I liked it so well, I replaced a Panasonic wireless phone system in my vacation home with a second Uniden TRU9485.

this phone is really smart. Each unit allows you to control the console. I can check my VM and program the base unit from any phone.



Not only that, I can scale this unit so that it can do multiple units. Very nice.



It does conflict with my wireless computer network however I altered my channel on my router and that took care of the conflict.



The quality is nice too. Fit and finish have held up...Listen to this, my 3 year old (at the time) tossed a unit into the toilet, flushed and left it to die...*sigh* After removing the battery and letting it dry, it worked like a charm again. I doubt that would happen in your house so this phone is good for you....Go for it!

Lousy range.......2007-06-14

This is my third set of wireless phones, the other sets died of natural and un-natural causes - I thought the higher gig range would make for better long range reception, but these are by far the worst of the lot. They don't work in a two story house, and if outside, forget it. Even though I have invested in two bases and five handsets, now that I don't need multi-line, I will be replacing these phones. Panasonic or Seimens were the better units.

Great phones until 6.5 months, when handset #1's buttons all failed to work, as did handset #2's did two weeks later. Could not reset. Uniden is asking for my credit card to pay for shipping? Hmmm.

I do not recommend this phone. I purchased this set and an additional extension. All three periodically lose incoming sound volume. If you rap it on a hard surface, the volume returns to normal. I tried the factory recommended fix, and it did not work.

Worst phone since my first cordless in 1992........2007-06-03

I have been a happy Uniden customer for years -- and then I bought this phone. I read the customer reviews here on Amazon before buying the phone and discounted the feedback from folks who said they couldn't call from the Caller ID screen and had volume problems. Well... believe it. You can't call from the Caller ID screen (I've contacted Uniden directly about this and they've yet to give me an answer - which probably means you can't) and in response to the volume problem they suggested I "knock" on the top of the phone when the volume goes down. (Yeah, that will go over real well with my clients.) This is a horrible phone. Look elsewhere.

This Uniden Cordless Expeandable system is great, it has all the features that was described on Amazon's page, sound quality is awesome and I can move from room to room without it breaking up the signal, it even works near other electronics that are said to of caused interference to this phone, don't have any problems with the phone and plan on adding one more handset to this phone in the future, it is made very well to some phones which seem flimsy and has a easy to read LCD face, some of the features I have not used as of yet so I can not give my honest opinion on those yet, I have used the speaker phone on the base, it works nice, no problems with clarity of voice, so far I can tell you that this phone is worth every penny you spend, I have had many other brands of cordless phones and this one is by far the best one so far.Uniden TRU9465-2 Expandable Cordless System with Dual Keypad and Call Waiting/Caller ID and Exta Handset and Charger

good price for a well made, solid phone system. its got all of the bells and whistles I wanted and then some, so its kinda overly complicated, but that seems to be the only drawback so far.

I got this phone for my hard-of-hearing dad. At first, he loved the phone, saying that the sound was so much clearer than with his old phone that he didn't even need to use the audio boost. But after a couple of weeks of use, he now wants to return it. He hears other conversations in the background, and has verified that it's only on this new phone by picking up one of the old phones in another room. This is so disappointing.... has anyone found a workaround for this interference?

Great basic phone and those hearing impaired.......2007-06-16

I'm not hearing or visually impaired but when my 2.4 Ghz phone was interfering with my wireless router I went looking for a 900 Mhz to replace it. I don't like all the useless extras that are on most other phones and I like a phone where I can turn off the ringer if I want to. This phone is great because I can turn the ringer off yet still know when I'm getting a call as it has an indication on the base and the handset. The keypad is not over large and the caller ID is on the handset and not the base. I've had it over a year and I'm getting to the point where I need to get another battery but I see me keeping this phone until I can't get a battery for it anymore. I've had other models of Uniden phones in the past and have always been very satisfied with their products.

I purchased this item for a replacement for my 85 year old mother. Being sight and hearing impaired, this phone has great features with few extras that only confuse the elderly. Easy set up and programming made this item a hit with her, now she can visibly see when a call is coming in and the hearing boost makes it easier for her to hear whle using. Price was fantastic for a Uniden, which I believe is a quality phone.

The CXAI5198 from Uniden is a combination corded/cordless phone system that comes loaded with features. The cordless handset comes with its own charging cradle and utilizes the 5.8 GHz frequency to deliver greater range and clearer reception than many traditional 900 MHz or 2.4 GHz phones.

I like this phone system a lot. I had been on a cell-phone only kick until I moved into a place that had no cell service at all. The old portable phone that I pulled out of my closet to use had horrible reception. I really needed a great phone to talk to my boyfriend who is out of town on jobs long stints at a time (thus, we need to talk on the phone all the time). He actually found this one on Amazon and suggested it to me. We're both very happy with the results.
I do live in an apartment complex, so the reception seems slightly muddled at times, possibly due to phone signals from nearby neighbors? However, if I'm in a room adjacent to where the base is, I seem to be ok. The answering machine and main part of the phone are very user friendly and work just great.

A little Disappointed.......2007-07-01

Before I purchased this product I researched Consumer Reports. This phone rating well with CR. I also read some of the reviews on Amazon's site. Well the cordless handset had a little static and the call was not clear. Also, people kept complaining of not being able to hear me on the speaker phone on the base.

Needless to say my Uniden 5198 is headed back.

This is the first Uniden telephone that we have bought. We were a little hesitant on buying this as we had never tried any product of this brand till now. After getting the phone I can surely say it is a quality product.

It is a really good phone with lot of features for its price. We were looking for a phone which has the following features: Corded + Cordless, answering machine, speaker phone, sturdy build, nice look and usability in case of power failure. This phone has all of them to our full satisfaction.

The communication between the base unit and cordless handset is crystal clear. We were worried on this because some of the earlier reviews reported the problem of static. May be those people had lot of electronic devices near the base phone that may be causing interference. Volume and sound quality are more than enough for a person with a normal hearing. Access and operating the features is very easy. This phone gives full value for your money.

The Uniden TWX977 is an accessory handset for Uniden T9, ELP and UIP series expandable phone systems. Operating on a 5.8 GHz frequency and built with digital spread spectrum call transmission, you can expect a consistently clear signal that does not interfere with Wi-Fi networks.

As an expandable handset, it is designed to function without a phone jack--the charging cradle simply requires a nearby electrical outlet for its AC adapter.

With subscription to local service, the handset is Call Waiting Caller ID compatible, and includes a 100-station memory. It truly is WATERPROOF!.......2007-07-08

Purchased this handset at the same time as base unit TRU9496 (see review). So far it has passed all tests with flying colors. I didn't believe it was waterproof so I floated it in the pool, still worked great. Then I bravely (or stupidly) held it UNDER water in the hot tub (yes, with the spa jets running) for at least a minute. STILL WORKED, however, when I immediately tried the intercom with a regular handset in the house, the speaker was fine but my sound was muffled on the other handset. Made a phone call and the speaker and sound was muffled (both ways), but at least it still worked. However, I waited a few days while deciding to send it back and tried it again and it was working normally. No problems since, speaker and mic seem to be working fine.

I think it will be great to have out at the pool or hot tub and will resist dripping wet hands, but I wouldn't try swimming underneath the water while using it LOL

A Rugged Phone for a Rugged Family.......2007-06-02

I bought two of these handsets 6 months ago to go with our Uniden phone system. One is kept on the bathroom counter and sent into the shower with the kids so we can use the intercom function to remind them to get out. The other is in our garage and gets carried around while gardening and doing other dirty or wet outdoor activities. Both handsets continue to work great. They feel solid and work well.

The only downside is that the speaker volume is a bit low. When I use it as a receiver for monitoring the baby's room I have to make a point of paying attention to the sounds because her shouts don't come through very loudly.

One of the most comfortable hand-held phones you will ever own (fits my big hands great). Sound quality is awesome, especially considering it is waterproof. Electronically registers itself with the base system with a few minor steps, easy enough for all skill levels. A great phone!!!!!

Not water "resistant", when they mean it can get exactly 4 drops of water on it. No, I had to be super annoying and have my wife watch me do a real world test of the phones durability. I ran in under the faucet, threw it in a pot of water and even gave it to the dishwasher for a few minutes and then the old, "can you hear me now?" test and all passed with flying colors. Bravo Uniden, next stop- Snorkeling in the bahamas...

This is a good phone in most respects, solid build, good feature set, however, this phone as well as the non-waterproof version have very poor muffled sound quality from the earpiece. If the sound quality was good, which I consider important, it would get a 5.

I had no problem with the phone - until it malfunctioned just after the 1 yr. warranty period had ended. The handset started beeping incessantly, and the only way to stop it was to remove the battery. When the battery is put back in, the phone starts beeping again.

Now it's time to buy another phone...from a different manufacturer.

I ordered the Tru9460 base handset and 3 accessory handsets (Tcx905).

I use Amazon Prime, and the handsets arrived in 2 days w/o difficulty, or delay. And let me tell you, they look great! sleek, crisp. I can't wait to see if they work.

I have to wait, b/c Amazon gives me no idea when the Base Handset will be shipped. There was no (zippo, nada) indication on any of the web pages that the Base wasn't in stock, and so when I ordered, I was under the impression that it would have arrived today with the accessory handsets.

Furthermore, Amazon is stating that I can't cancel or change my order, if I wanted to, so I could instead go out to a local store and buy the base, so I could get my phone system up and running. This would be good, but kind of defeats the whole purpose of buying online (to save time and the hassel of in-store shopping) and of paying for my yearly Amazon Prime fee (to save on delivery charges).

So, the reason for 1 star is really my beef with Amazon, not with the phone. I'll seek to leave an update on the phone when I finally do receive it and can give it a thorough evaluation.

The people I spoke to using this phone either didn't recognize my voice or said I sounded like I was talking down a drain pipe. Also I found the ringer not loud enough.

Feature Rich!!.......2007-07-06

I bought this set for two friends over the holidays and they love them! I've used theirs many times and was impressed so I bought a set for myself. I have recommended it to many other friends since then. The amount of features in this set go on and on. Besides being a cordless phone it can also be used as a Room/Baby monitor as well as two-way radios away from home. You can also use the handsets as an intercom system in your home or to transfer the phone call between handsets. Most options are programable from any handset and you can listen/clear your messages from any handset. You can also copy your phonebook between handsets. And a handy little feature when you want to be left alone... one touch "Do Not Disturb" that will prevent any handset from ringing with an incoming call. This is just a few of the things that impressed me. The only thing that I noticed that may be a problem is that sometimes the caller sounds a little muffled. I'm not sure if that is a problem with this phone system or not tho.

What Can I Say?!.......2007-05-31

Purchased the phones because I wanted a different look and more features than what my old Vtech offered. The feature I required was the "Do Not Disturb" (DND). I hate hearing phones ring all over the house! So having the ability to turn off the ringer is great, also. The feature that I enjoy the most is the selectable ringtones, which can be assigned to callers - nice!

While small in stature, the isn't a gawdy piece of furniture - it blends perfectly. The orange display is great - no squinting here. Lastly, being able to access the voicemail from any phone is wonderful. For me, this a great phone to have. Thank you.

Best residential phone I've ever had..........2007-05-13

My first cordless, right out of college, freshly married and walking the aisles at Best Buy...was an old Uniden 900-Mega hertz. It was the best and we used it for years. It lasted longer than my marriage! :-) I then tried a Sony and a V-tech, a blond and a red-head too... but, for a phone, I'm right back with Uniden. Superior clarity, long-range coverage and a very good price. Highly recommend. Will update this when I find a sweet girl as fine as this phone! =-)

Great phone... had to read and reread instructions to add it to my system. After I found the magic key, installation was very easy. Very good sound and no problems so far. It has been damp a couple of times around the pool, so I plan on another to go in the garage.

Gret phone with a minor setback.......2007-06-14

This phone is definately a step up form the previous model, but it still has its flaws. The new phone has many new features that i liked especially the 5.8 mhz band. A clear and bold LED display makes it easy to see at most angles and lighting conditions. The speaker phone is a nice addition to this phone. The 1 setback that they didnt or couldnt improve on both the older and newer models is, the moment the phone gets wet, water fills the mic and earpiece. This makes it virtually impossible to hear and talk on this phone. The only way to remedy that problem is with a big gust of air from your mouth or to bang it on your hand to knock the water out. Same thing goes for the speaker phone. Other than that, it makes a very convienient phone to use pool side or even in the shower.

I bought this phone in the hopes it would survive my daily beating of dropping it on the ground in the hot-tub, being left outside in the rain etc...etc..! So far this phone has taken everything I have dished out, I wish I would have bought this phone a long time ago I would have saved quite a bit of money.

The call clarity is excellent and the features work flawlessly as most Uniden phones I have owned.

The only thing I would add to the phone is a headphone jack..this might defeat the purpose for water proofing but that is the only thing I can see that is lacking here.

After five minutes of use, while wading in the pool, the phone failed due to an apparent leak. Ironically, the directions tell you what to do if water leaks into the unit. Would not recommend permitting the phone to be submersed.

A very good phone.......2007-06-29

The minimal discount reflects the fact that this is a sought after phone, and in fact it has many advantages. The sound is relatively clear on the cordless phone and answering machine and the buttons are highly visible and easy to dial. We are not challenged in terms of either hearing or vision, but the phone is nonetheless facilitative and convenient. Be sure to reprogram the emergency button immediately, as it is keyed to 911. An inadvertant push on the button will get the police to your door.

nice phone. great features. my grandmother loves it. it's very simple and easy to use. large lead screens on both the handset and base. adjustable ringer volume (on base only) lights flash when a call is comming in. audible alert, when you have a messege waiting is nice. the only drawback is the voice caller ID is difficult to make out sometimes.

My father-in-law wears hearing aids and can only hear on the phone by taking 1 hearing aid out and using a highly applified headset. He wanted a portable phone, so I got him this one based on the description.

I returned it. I doesn't get much louder than a regular adjustable portable phone, and not even close to as loud as his old corded phone.

Bad product description. Otherwise, the phone appeared to be okay, though I didn't play with it much.

This phone is great for my elderly, hearing impaired father. However, the package was missing the phone cords! I emailed Amazon for help to correct the problem. Amazon was prompt to reply, only to inform me I needed to communicate with Uniden directly for the parts. A convenient means to purchase has become quite a hassle! :(

Great phone!.......2007-04-12

This is a fabulous phone. Absolutely one of the best we've tried. It was a purchase for my 70-year-old mother which I made after reading the reviews here, and she just loves it! Dad was an old AT&T man so you can only imagine how picky they are about phones. And, after many, many attempts, this one fit the bill. The sound is fabulous, but it also contains the old fashioned push button type phone with an attached extension, with the clarity that resembles the old Bell Telephone system phones. (Too bad they're not free like they used to be in the good old days!) Mom set this up by herself without any difficulties whatsoever, so if you're thinking about a purchase for an older person, or even a young person just starting out, this is a great investment and one that will be around for quite awhile. Highly, highly recommend!

In short, the scanner keeps interested parties in the information loop. Of course, scanning the 32,000 available frequencies can be time-consuming and frustrating, which is why Uniden added such functions as Close Call capture technology, which instantly tunes to signals from nearby transmitters to help you detect and identify local signals, and a comprehensive memory that holds up to 100 programmed channels (10 per bank).

The scanner also offers six preset service banks, with preset frequencies for police, fire/emergency, aircraft, ham, marine, and weather, making it easy to locate specific types of calls. And should you want to regularly monitor a few specific channels, you can designate them as "priority" channels. The BC72XLT will then check those channels every two seconds while it scans each bank, so you never miss an important transmission. Other scanning functions include 10 programmable search ranges for finding unlisted frequencies in your area and a two-second scan delay that lets you hear any replies to the original transmission before moving on.

A scanner is fairly useless if you can't decipher the transmission, which is why the BC72XLT is outfitted with triple-conversion circuitry. The technology virtually eliminates any interference from IF images and clarifies the selected frequency, so you needn't strain to pick up certain words or phrases. And thanks to the key lock, you won't accidentally change the programming while carrying the scanner in your pocket. Add in a memory backup that preserves stored frequencies even if the scanner loses power and an easy-to-read, backlit display and you're ready for virtually any scanning situation.

The scanner comes with a flexible antenna with a BNC connector, ensuring adequate reception in strong signal areas (a separately sold external antenna will further improve reception), along with an AC adapter. As an alternative, you can power the scanner using two AA alkaline or rechargeable batteries (the latter can even be recharged while in the scanner). The unit measures 2.75 by 4.5 by 1.25 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.

I bought this scanner without knwoing anything about it, and got a really nice surprise. It was all that I expected. The main use I give to it is monitoring aviation frequiencies and it does this job wonderfully. In case you want extra range, you can attach an external antenna to it, giving it a wide spectrum of use.

My #1 use for this scanner is for public safety scanning - I have family in law enforcement & we like to listen in.

I own a Uniden BC248CLT, & for years I owned a BC80XLT handheld. My BC80XLT was recently damaged & needed replaced. I ordered this BC72XLT, & am ready to return it also. It is not anywhere near the quality my prior Uniden handheld was. My 80 picked up as well or better than my 248 does here at home. This 72 picks up maybe 50% of the traffic of my others--whether in the house, outside, or even right in town. The buttons on this are awful, too. I have to go through multiple steps to do things that took only 1 button press on the 80. The reception, though, is my biggest concern AND complaint. I never had to purchase any extra antenna or such for my other Uniden handheld to get the better reception. Also, the volume, even at max output, is only "normal" listening level--so if I am in a noisy environment, I cannot turn it up to hear it better. My old BC80XLT had much better volume.

An additional warning - Uniden's Support has gone down the toilet. I thought Uniden was a company that would at least *acknowledge* my complaint, and maybe even have some suggestions of a better product - all I got was an auto reply that I should hear from Customer Service in 2-3 business days--and then I never heard a thing. I checked my support question on their site, and it was marked "closed." Good luck!

The Bearcat BC72XLT arrived promptly. It is easy to use and the reception is really great except my local police have moved to much higher UHF so I cant get those.

small size, big performance.......2007-01-24

As they say, "a little bit of knowledge goes a long way..." If you live in or near a big city, this scanner will do absolutely no good because large metropolitan police forces use a trunk communication system due to the large number of units at work at one time. These systems aren't actually scrambled, but due to high volume of calls, it would be hard of a single scanner unit to keep track of them so while you might be able to hear one end of the converstaion, you won't necessarily be able to hear the other.

This unit is perfect for smaller cities which use frequencies betweem 153.0000 and 169.0000 for their police communications. The unit is also good for tracking airport traffic and, as you know by now, NASCAR events. The best thing to do when scanning for new frequencies is to have access to a code book for your area so you'll know what you're listening to at the time.

If you're technologically-challenged in any way, you're better off letting someone who knows what they're doing program the basic channels for you. I like the fact that's it's a lot smaller and not as heavy as its predecesors. It's a conspicuous as a mobile phone and a lot easier to carry on your belt without it getting in the way.
