Panasonic KXTC1871 900 MHz DSS Cordless Phone with Answering System, Dual Keypads, and Caller ID (Black)

Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description
The Panasonic KXTC1871B spread spectrum cordless phone features digital spread spectrum (DSS) technology. The DSS uses the entire 900 MHz frequency band, providing greater output power and boosting range, and making it very difficult for others to eavesdrop on your calls.

The digital duplex speakerphone reduces echo and dropout, permitting a more natural-sounding conversation. Instead of using tapes, the all-digital answering machine records messages on an advanced microchip with a total recording time of 15 minutes. Messages are held in flash memory and are unaffected by power failure or interruptions. You can also change the greeting message, check messages, erase messages, and more from any touch-tone phone.

The KXTC1871B supports caller ID with call waiting. The caller ID display is located on the back of the handset for easy viewing. The three-line LCD lets you see all caller ID information for each call without scrolling. You can store up to 50 telephone numbers in the KXTC1871B's directory and can access each using the navigation key.

For recharging, place the handset in the base with the keypad facing up or down. Unlike other phones that require an overnight charging period, the KXTC1871B battery charges in just six hours, thanks to the Ultra Charge battery charge system. The handset has a three-level volume control, a belt clip, and a headset jack. The lighted handset keypad makes it easier to dial numbers in darkened rooms.

The Panasonic KXTC1871B spread spectrum cordless phone comes with a one-year limited warranty on parts and labor.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars One of the few that will page you.......2003-10-31

I've had mine for probably a couple of years now and the LCD display has sections that are unreadable. I'm trying to find a replacement, but for some reason, no one has a key feature that I depend on with this answering machine: Pager Call. When someone leaves a message, it can call a pager (which I have programmed to call my cell phone). I'm about to go buy a couple used ones to keep that feature without having to buy something expensive.

It has good quality recording, and the phone handset has louder volume than the vtech 2.4ghz cordless phones I use (for the 2-line capability), but being analog, there is occasional static.

The display problem is really the only downside to it...

3 out of 5 stars It's an "OK" phone........2003-09-09

This phone was pretty expensive when I bought it several years ago at Best Buy. I had to laugh when I saw it being offered for under $20 here. (A wry laugh, that is). Overall, the phone has worked well for me. All of its features work and they have come in handy for me. On the downside, its weak points are the receiver volume is weak and the battery/recharging system has problems. I just go into a quieter room if I can't hear the caller well enough. It isn't really a problem. I use a headset with the receiver for hands-free operation without a problem. I am still using the original battery. I think the key to good battery use is to NOT keep the battery on the charger all the time. Charge the battery when the display indicates, otherwise keep it off the charger. Occasionally, let the battery totally run itself down, then charge it back up. (My cellphone battery charger has a Discharge button on it for just this purpose). For the last 6 months or so, my Panasonic cordless phone battery has been acting erratically. Sometimes, it will run for days just fine or a day, then cut the phone off with no warning at all. I used to get a warning beep. Fortunately, if I can get to my corded phone the other party is still connected. It's probably time to replace my cordless phone battery. That's how I got here. I read the other reviews and thought I would express mine. In my opinion, if I could get this phone for $20 NEW, it would be a steal.

1 out of 5 stars Lousy Phone from a lousy company.......2003-03-07

Panasonic products seem to be engineered to start failing exactly after the 1 year warranty. First, this phone started losing battery power after about 30 minutes of talking. Changing batteries didn't help. A couple of months later, the charging has completely stopped.

Incidentally, my Panasonic DVD player failed exactly 1 year 3 months after I bought it.

1 out of 5 stars Panacrapic.......2002-06-06

This phone was a disaster from purchase. Problem No.1: The voice of the incoming caller frequently cannot attain suitable volume for even minimal intelligibility. The first week of purchase I spent approximately 6 frustrating hours (on a neighbor's phone) with Panasonic's "customer service" dept., trying to discern & alleviate the problem. Finally (this is about 10 days after purchase), I said I wanted to return the phone in exchange for a new one. The rep du jour refused, telling me my only option was to send the phone back to the company and wait 6 to 8 weeks for repairs to be completed.
Problem No. 2: Panasonic [is bad]. I sent a letter to the president of Panasonic complaining about the company's customer-hostile return policy: Obviously, I would have to buy a new phone while I waited the six weeks for Panasonic to squeeze, prod, and send back its lemon. No one ever responded in any form.
Problem No. 3: Constant, ongoing, battery failures. From the start, the battery could only tolerate 10 to 20 minutes of conversation, and the whole phone goes dead after 30 minutes. I ALWAYS keep the headset nestled in the station, so it is not being drained when not in use. I bought a brand new battery and charged it up: Same exact problem. I'm going back to a rotary, if I can find one...

2 out of 5 stars I bought it because it was a Panasonic, but returned it........2001-07-02

My old Panasonic 900MHz phone is the best cordless phone that I've ever used. However, I wanted to upgrade in order to get the caller ID, a headset jack, and phone directory features.

I didn't see any reason to get a 2.4 GHz phone, since clearly my 900 Mhz (analog) phone worked perfectly for my application, so I chose the 900 MHz DSS KXTC1871. Feature wise, it had everything that I could want in a phone.

However...:

1) The phone directory was uncomfortably slow... moving from entry to entry took way longer than it does in my cell phone.

2) People on the other end of the phone could immediately notice that I was on a new phone. The voice quality on my end seemed fine, but they complained.

3) The phone would sometimes cut out and beep at me, but I had no idea why and was always within 15 feet of the base station.

To it's credit, I was impressed with the follow features:

1) The speakerphone was good, meaning voice quality was very acceptable.

2) The answering machine was great. No complaints whatsoever.

I don't think it's impossible to make a perfect home phone. There's nothing special about cordless phone technology these days, and they should be at least as useful as my trusty Nokia cell phone and sound as good as my *old* Panasonic 900 MHz phone.
