Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars I rate it " Very Good".......2007-05-01

Using this product with 2 handsets for about 3 years. This is not a "Mercedez-Benz" phone but certainly an acceptable, reliable product. One handset has developed a problematic dialing button, but you just press it a little harder (smile). Handsets work better if they have fairly fresh batteries. Range is good when battery is strong.

5 out of 5 stars Best cordless phone system I've owned.......2007-04-16

I owned this phone and 7 additional handsets for about 5 years. We recently had a flood and the base unit was destroyed. I'm replacing and noticed the negative reviews on-line and thought I should put in my two cents.

We have used the system for 2 lines at home without any problems. We have a wireless computer network and have never experienced any problems.

The reception is very clear -- even in the speaker phone mode which we find very useful. I'm not sure what the range is but we live on a two acre lot and get perfect reception in the backyard.

I have absolutely no complaints.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME PHONE-GREAT FOR BUSINESS.......2007-03-28

Have had the same model for 5 years and the push buttons for the numbers finally wore out! Looked for this model again and came across just the handheld portion of the phone by itself, but just that was selling for more then the whole package! Came across this bargain on Amazon and am very happy to have this quality phone with all the whistles and gadgets we've grown used to using! Really awesome, long-lasting phone..even after having been dropped a few times in that time period!

5 out of 5 stars Good phone, clear sound........2007-02-09

Overall this is a very good phone system. It's easy to set up and it works flawlessly, never drops a call and the calls are crystal clear. It's great to be able to locate a phone anywhere in the house without running a phone wire. Just plug in the charger and it's ready to go. The range is great, no static. My only minor issue is that the buttons are a little hard to push. That can also be a good thing because you will never accidently press a button while you are talking.

It's great to be able to listen to messages from any handset. Intercom feature is convenient. I have 4 teenagers in the house (that's why I need two phone lines) so the handset paging feature helps to locate the phone abandoned on the trampoline in the back yard. The handsets are also very durable with good battery life.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent system.......2007-01-30

I've used this for 3 years now. Just expanded to 4 handsets. This is the best phone I've ever had. At $60, I may buy another set for my other house.

5 out of 5 stars UNIDEN PHONE REVIEW........2007-01-14

THE UNIDEN EX1976 CORDLESS PHONE IS A GREAT PHONE. IT HAS A LOT OF FEATURES AND ALL OF THEM WORK JUST PERFECT. I OWN 3 OF THESE PHONES. A+ RATING FOR THIS PHONE.

5 out of 5 stars Solid phone.......2007-01-03

We've had several Uniden phones, and found them to be very robust and clear. This model is no exception - a good buy.

3 out of 5 stars Too loud.......2006-10-11

Over the past 6 years, I have only owned Uniden home phones. You would think I have learned my lesson, but apparently not. The first one lasted for 3 years and then randomly stopped charging. We bought a new battery and put that in, but then it just died about a month later.
So I bought the top of the line super fancy model, and that died within a month. I contacted the warentee department and since I lived in Bermuda at the time, they wanted no part in helping me.

Now that I am back in the US, I bought this phone that the review is on, and it has pros and cons - but I think there is one negative point that trumps all other points: it is TOO LOUD.
There is a volume control on it, and even turned all of the way down, it still sounds like someone is SCREAMING in your ear. You can actually set the phone down on the lowest setting and use it like a speakerphone it is so loud.
At first I was going to put up with it - but after a month of it and the splitting headaches that any usage of this phone casues... I'm going to have to toss it and get something else.

On the good side, it is inexpensive and other than the volume issue, seems to be a decent phone.

4 out of 5 stars Uniden EWCI-936, Weather Display, Cordless Phone.......2007-01-11

A Christmas Gift for our grown daughter. She loved it. She calls almost daily to compare readings. While we recognize the device is not so sophisticated that it will compete with the meteorologist on the evening news, it is certainly helpful when deciding what to wear for the day, and to know whether the pets should be sheltered for the evening.

Neat product. Well worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars A Lot of Phone for the Money.......2005-12-29

This Uniden phone is really a bargain for all the capabilites that you get. Temperature, humidity, weather forecasting, tide levels, alarm clock and an excellent cordless phone. I have several similar uniden cordless phones in my house (without the temperature, humidity feature) and they are without a doubt the best sounding cordless phones I have owned. The only downside is the phone's range is a little limited. It tends to get noisy at about 50 feet or so. It comes with a belt clip and my wife uses it with a headset/mike (not included) for walking around the house while she is on the phone.

4 out of 5 stars Not a bad phone.......2005-12-17

I bought this phone from Staples for $15 after rebate. The sound quality is good from the 900MHz phone. The ear piece could be a little bit bigger for my ears but it's not too uncomforable. The weather feature is nice. The forcasting is sometime a hit or miss thing. It's supposed to forcast what the weather is like for the next 12-24 hours, but most of the time it tells you what the weather is like now (which isn't all that helpful). However, having the outdoor temp and the humidity are realtively acurate. I do wish the base kept track of the caller-id numbers instead of just showing the caller-id number when the call is coming in. The headset does keep track of your recent calls.

2 out of 5 stars Buyers beware!.......2005-09-06

This is a decent phone and answering system for about the first year, then two major problems start. If you have cell phones, charging them anywhere close to this phone will cause these problems to appear sooner than normal.

Buttons stick making it very hard to dial a number.

A clear conversation might be interrupted by "electronic noise."

4 out of 5 stars GE 26998ge1 900 MHz Analog Cordless .......2005-08-12

This phone works well with good quality and reception.

5 out of 5 stars Satisfactory Service.......2005-06-17

My parents have always tried to buy high quality but not overly expensive telephones with the expectation that they wont last over two years. It has been about a year and a half and the phone is still doing great. They love the phone, the machine works great, and the phone serves its purpose.

3 out of 5 stars Button Problems.......2005-05-08

Phone itself (reception, sound, answering machine, etc) works great, but the buttons stick and then fall off. I see from the reviews I am not the only one with this problem. I am in this site now to look for phones as I am now missing my #1, #3, and talk buttons. E-mailed GE to see the price of a new handset and got a useless response telling me to call some long distance number?! Off to buy a phone!

4 out of 5 stars The phone is fine, whine somewhere else.......2004-12-13

My folks who are in their late sixies have had this phone for over a year. It works just fine. My father suffers mild hearing lost, corrected with hearing aids. They have no problem hearing the messages, or with reception. In fact they like so much they want another one without the answering machine for another room. Just wanted to add a postive review to keep things balanced.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Finally found all I wanted in a phone when I bought this...........2003-05-06

I was realy looking for some specific features in a phone and was frustrated until I found this beauty. Either they had some but not all the features I wanted or added features I didn't want or need. I wanted a corded phone because I found that reception with a cordless was so bad in my basement apartment and hated the cordless batteries that always seemed to need to be charged too much. Then again I wanted a cordless for the convienence but I also wanted a speaker phone for those long "on hold" calls. I especially wanted a phone that had a back-lit caller ID display and I did not want an answering machine as I had voicemail through my local phone company. All this seemed like a tall order and of course I didn't want to spend $100's of dollars. This phone met all these requirements and more at a great price and the cordless part is static free with a long battery life. This is my only review I've ever written but I felt I just needed to. This phone is awesome!!

3 out of 5 stars Good Deal.......2002-12-05

I purchased this phone because we have a limited # of phone jacks in our home and I needed more phones than I have jacks. So far, I have been satisfied. The only 2 things I have found that I don't especially like are regarding the cordless phone. The volume is extremely loud and find myself constantly trying to turn it down although it is on the lowest setting. Also, it takes much longer than any other cordless phone I've owned to charge. However, it has sat off the charger for 2 days and was still able to be used. Over all, a good deal.

4 out of 5 stars A very decent phone.......2002-04-04

Basically, this is a very good phone with a lot of features. The only thing that I found annoying is that when you use the cordless, the sound is not very crisp. Also, the battery doesn't last as long as I thought it should. You have to recharge it for about 12 hrs; meanwhile, my Panasonic only has to recharge for 4 hrs. The reason I bought this phone is you get speakerphone, corded base and a cordless all for the price for one. As far as my experience with cordless phones (I have a Sony, Panasonic and a GE), Panasonic is the best.
After using the phone for about a month, the delete function for the caller id on the base didn't work. I sent the whole thing back to Thomson electronics. They told me it would take 4 to 8 weeks to fix. But then, two weeks later, I received a brand new phone in the mail. That was definitely a surprise. I guess it's cheaper for them to send me a new one than to fix my old one. I have to say my experience with them is not bad at all.

4 out of 5 stars Two Phones -- One Jack.......2002-01-21

Replaced 3 phones and a speaker (total of 4) with a GE 26955GE1 and a GE 26958GE1 (total of 4 phones). Both GEs consist of corded phone (which does require a wall-jack) and a cordless handset (which only requires power). After reviewing dozens of other models of 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz phones, I opted for these.

Wanted corded units to ensure phones remained in the kitchen and computer room, and cordless handsets to roam the house. The cordless phones don't interfere with each other and are immune to the microwave in the kitchen (many 2.4 GHz models are reportedly effected by microwaves and fight with wireless LAN networks).

Having Caller-ID in both the corded base and the handset is essential -- we don't answer "Unknown caller"s. The cordless is ideal next to your bed, the handset sits upright in its charger and the Caller-ID display is backlit -- it's easy to see at night. The Caller-ID on the base is hard to see from an angle -- you've got to be over top of it, not have it pushed to the back of your desk/table.

Controls are easy to use, we use the Page/Intercom button to transfer calls between the house and the yard (we usually carry a cordless out to the spa or garage) -- and also to locate wayward handsets. Both corded and cordless handsets have volume controls and ringer-off switches.

We've been able to get 4 people on the 4 phones with virtually no problem. Range of cordless is fine ... can reach the front mailbox and spa out back. Quality is great too ... no static.

I'm a perfectionist though, here's where are the cons:
* Caused static on my corded Sony caller-ID phone (Model #IT-ID70) ... but not on any other phone
* Can't review caller-ID log while either handset is off-hook
* Can't store numbers directly from caller-ID to the dialing directory
* Unusually loud feedback circuit -- my own voice frequently overloads my earpiece (don't know what it sounds like on the remote end).
* The white color looks good now, but will probably show wear, dirt, and make-up easily.

During Christmas 2001, no literature was available on these models -- they are made by Thompson Consumer Products, part of the GE family now (Thompson CSF makes French Exocet anti-ship missiles).

2 out of 5 stars okay while it lasted.......2006-03-09

This phone was okay for a cheap cordless phone with caller ID, the reception was good, and the message waiting light worked well with vonage. All the other features sucked (like the phone book as it didn't store many names, and was kinda tricky to use). The phone lasted about 10 months, and now is dead.

1 out of 5 stars Defective.......2005-02-03

I wanted a cheap caller ID cordless phone. I thought this one would be great, since it was cheap and I don't need a whole lot of range. Unfortunately, once I got it home and charged it, I found that it was completely and utterly useless. I tried calling it several times from my cell phone -- the handset would display a "ringing" message, but the phone wouldn't ring, no matter what ringer setting I chose. The buttons would make noise only intermittently when pressed, and when I did receive a call, it wouldn't pick up. The most annoying thing I experienced in the twelve hours I used the phone was the fact that when I set the phone on its cradle, which was located next to my computer, the computer would *turn off*! This is despite the fact that the phone and computer were plugged into entirely different outlets and the computer is on a UPS! (No problems with the UPS, I checked). This happened several times. Other than those problems, the phone seemed OK, but when I return it I will definitely be getting a different brand or model. I don't expect much for $20, but I do expect the thing to work.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for the price.......2003-12-28

Although I am not a big fan of Vtech, preferring other brands instead, I may be a convert after using this phone for a few months. Reception is crystal clear and callers comment on the great sound quality. The flashing light on the base that alerts me to calls left on my phone company message minder service is a very nice feature, as is being able to dial a number and see it before turning the phone on and sending it for connection. I gave the phone 4 stars instead of 5 because the screen is impossible to read without lots of light (no backlight) and the battery is the older type that develops memory, rather than lithium ion, charging less and less each time. So the key to using this type of battery is to keep the phone off the charger once it is charged and leaving it off until it is totally depleated.

2 out of 5 stars Small and Convenient but Too Much Static.......2003-11-25

I purchased this phone because I was looking for a basic, cordless phone with caller-id. This phone is small and attractive with clear reading buttons. Unfortunately, when I used the phone, I had to turn the volume up loud to hear who I was talking to. And the louder I turned up the volume, the louder background noise and static became. I could hear static noise coming off the person's voice. It also made my voice sound louder on my end.

Also, it does not appear to have the feature of memory speed dialing. You can program numbers into a phone directory and then scroll through the phone to access a number, but I didn't see where you could program speed dialing.

I do have a corded V-Tech Phone, which is working fine.

1 out of 5 stars Poor User Interface, Poor Quality.......2007-06-23

Unfortunately, this phone was a complete waste. Mine worked as intended for just about two months, and the died completely.

Even when it was working, using it was frustrating. The user interface is the most counter intuitive one I've ever come across on a cordless phone. Even dialing can be frustrating. For example, every other phone I've seen allows you to dial the number _before OR after_ pressing the Talk button. This phone requires you to press the talk button before beginning to dial. Consequently, everyone who picks up this phone ends up confused.

Anyway, this phone was a complete waste of money. Buy at your own risk.

Product Description

Sony offers an SPP - A946, a single-line cordless phone with digital answering machine. Analog 900MHz is used for extended range thanks to superior transmission technology and you can carry your cordless phone further-and still carry on a conversation. The base speakerphone feature lets you answer incoming calls at the base. The tapeless digital answering machine records up to 15 minutes of conversation, counting your messages and audibly indicating them. All messages are written in permanent flash memory so you will never suffer a loss of a single second of conversation. The LCD Display on base unit performs call screening. Intercom lets you talk between handset and base unit. Page signal initiates intercom contact in either direction.

Amazon.com Product Description

The Sony SPPA946 offers the combined conveniences of a 900 MHz cordless phone with a built-in digital answering system. The analog 900 MHz reception means that you can take the handset even farther away from that base than you normally would with an older phone operating on a lower band, and you will still get clear, reliable reception. The speakerphone capability means that you can converse without the handset, by speaking directly into the base. Use the two-way paging/intercom feature to send an audible signal from the base to the handset and vice versa, so you can summon a coworker or family member, locate the handset, or converse between handset and base. The SPPA946 also offers 20 preset speed-dials for easy two-button dialing. The built-in digital answering system manages three mailboxes, enabling family members or coworkers to access their own voice messages separately. The answering system also offers time/date stamping, memo recording, and remote message retrieval.

1 out of 5 stars SONY SPPA946 IS A TERRIBLE PHONE.......2002-10-31

I have had three of these phones brought to me for repair because the charging circuit goes bad and drains the battery.

4 out of 5 stars Decent buy for the price.......2002-05-18

Much cheaper than other Sony machine. Works fine -- then again, I wasn't looking for anything fancy. Don't have problems with the speakerphone or message recording as the others did. I like the dual keypads.

4 out of 5 stars Best Phone For Price.......2002-02-25

There is no other Phone with all these great features
for this Price. I paid only $... with a $5.00 Amazon Coupon!
I have seen this phone advertised for $70.00
at the WIZ the same day I purchased it from AMAZON.

The Sound Quality of the phone is loud and clear.
However, since this phone has 3 Mailboxes it's a little difficult learning how to retrieve your mesages from another phone. Other than that this phone is a great deal!

1 out of 5 stars simply horrible.......2002-01-04

everything about the phone is bad. the answering system, the voiceon the answering system, the ability to fast forward through messages...go waste your money on something better than this!

1 out of 5 stars Poor quality phone, poor quality answering.......2001-11-29

Features on this phone are great - that is until you try to use the (easy to implement) features. For the phone - unless you talk directly into the microphone, you won't be heard on the other end. Does not seem to be capable of picking up voice unless directly aimed at the mike. As for the answering machine - it works pretty well but if you want to record an outgoing message you might as well be talking into a tuna can. The voice quality is awful - reminds me of some of the first answering machines ten or fifteen years ago. My recommendation is that you pass on this turkey unless you want to send it back for exchange.

3 out of 5 stars It works ... but not worth the money.......2006-01-26

I bought this cordless phone after my first was dead out of the box ... and I wanted an answering machine with my cordless phone. It was inexpensive, but I have learned once again that you get what you pay for.

First, the instructions are kinda complicated. The manual doesn't come in a booklet form but in a large poster that you need to unfold completely to read. Can't tell you how frustrating it is in an office of limited space.

Second, the headset volume is extremely low--even on it's highest volume setting. You have to press it against your ear to hear the other person. However, when you talk you can hear yourself through the phone quite clearly.

Third, contrary to the above, the ringer is ear-splittingly loud--even on it's lowest setting. You can turn of the ringer ... but that is pretty pointless when you need to hear it to answer it.

So, I am looking elsewhere. If you don't mind dealing with the three aforementioned difficulties then by all means buy the phone ... it works and would be a great starter phone if you can't afford the more expensive ones.

2 out of 5 stars should've spent more.......2005-10-13

phone:
poor microphone design means phone must be held directly in front of your mouth. 1 inch off, and no one can hear you.
range is poor. I can move one room away and still hear ok, but not two. changing channels doesn't help.

answering machine:
"mmrgblgh wgaher mmgnhr" this is how about 25% of the messages get recorded, at a volume too quiet to hear anyway.

too bad, the last vtech phone I bought was great.
