The Toshiba FT8859 cordless phone provides organization for your busy family or home office. It combines caller ID and dual-keypad convenience in one easy-to-operate unit.
A quick guide is included for convenient reference to basic phone operations. With its dual keypad, a call can be made and answered from either the handset or the base. A speaker button allows a third person to join in a conversation between the handset and an outside party.
The handset features a three-line backlit LCD for caller ID services. To use the LCD, we pressed the function button to access the menu. We used the arrow keys to scroll through the options and then pressed Select to choose a function. We found the keypad intuitive and the LCD easy to read. The CID button allows you to see the total number of calls you have stored in caller ID. Up to 50 names and numbers can be saved.
Up to 20 speed-dial numbers, 10 on the handset and 10 on the base, can be stored in memory. To call a saved number, press the memory button and scroll through the LCD menu to find the number. Or, for two-touch dialing, just press Memory and the assigned speed-dial number. There is also a handy pullout directory for recording your saved numbers. Memory dialing is conveniently accessed from either the handset or base.
Before testing the Toshiba FT8859, we charged it for the recommended 12 hours. We were able to take the phone 250 feet from the base before detecting static interference. At 700 feet it became difficult to hear over the static. We did notice a slight background humming even at close range, but it wasn't enough to be distracting. We were able to take the phone behind walls and near other electronic equipment with minimal interference.
Overall, the FT8859 performed well for this class of telephone, and, despite a quiet hum even within the generous 250 feet from the base, it offers clear cordless performance. --Emily Bakko
