The Toshiba FT8959 cordless phone provides organization for your busy family or home office. It combines advanced digital messaging and dual-keypad convenience in one easy-to-operate unit.
With its dual keypad, you can make or answer a call from either the handset or the base. A speaker button allows a third person to join in a conversation between the handset and an outside party. To disable the speakerphone (to prevent someone from eavesdropping on your conversation), press the Memory button on the handset and then the Pause button. A long beep indicates that the privacy function is enabled.
You can store up to 19 numbers, nine on the handset and 10 on the base, in memory and up to three numbers in one-touch dialing. To save a number, press the Memory button, enter the number, press Memory again and assign it to a memory-dial number. There is even a handy pullout directory for recording your saved numbers. Memory dialing is conveniently accessed from either the handset or base.
To use the answering machine, set the clock by pressing the clock button and using up or down arrow keys to select the correct day and time. The answering buttons have an intuitive layout and a digital number window so you can easily see at a glance how many calls you have. You can access the answering machine's basic functions remotely. Several additional functions are also available on the base, such as setting the maximum recording time for incoming messages. You can limit the message to one or four minutes or set a switch to announce-only, for accepting no incoming messages at all. You can also record a conversation for up to 10 minutes by pressing the two-way record button. Before testing the Toshiba FT8959, we charged it for the recommended 12 hours. We also examined the quick guide for reference to basic phone operations. In our tests, we were able to take the phone 250 feet from the base before detecting static interference. At 700 feet it became difficult to hear over the static. We did notice a slight background humming even at close range, but it wasn't enough to be distracting.
