Uniden EXAI7980 900 MHz Analog Cordless Phone with Answering System and Caller ID

Product Description

Amazon.com Review
The Uniden EXAI 7980 combines 900 MHz cordless range and clarity with a full menu of functions and features, including a digital answering machine, caller ID, and a base speakerphone. All of these features combined make an easy-to-use, comprehensive, cordless call-management system for your busy home or office.

It's easy to avoid unwanted calls with the EXAI 7980; this phone shows callers' names and numbers, as well as the call's date and time, in the handset's three-line display window. The unit saves caller-ID information in a 30-record digital file that allows scrolling, deletion, and instant callback. And, with caller ID/call waiting, you can see a caller's name and number even when you're already on another call.

The handset display window, which offers backlighting when you answer or place a call, is the EXAI 7980's information center. In addition to displaying caller-ID and call-waiting information, it shows the number of new calls or messages and the elapsed time for the current call.

The versatile base speakerphone also offers plenty of timesaving features. You can screen incoming calls by activating the speakerphone with just the touch of a button. You can also use the speakerphone and handset as an intercom system or for three-way conversations among an outside caller, a person talking from the handset, and a person talking from the base.

With 15 minutes of recording time, the EXAI 7980's answering machine has plenty of room to take all your new messages and save your most important ones for future reference. You can set the maximum message length at one or four minutes, or announce-only. Digital technology allows message phone numbers to appear in the display window as you scroll through your message list; it also offers instant message-repeat or message-deletion and a voice date-and-time stamp for messages. (For a complete listing of the EXAI 7980's many other features, read our FAQ, which is linked from the upper left navigation bar.)

In our tests of the EXAI 7980, the cordless sound quality was excellent and the broadcast range extended up to 100 feet from the base before the signal faded. However, there was some intermittent interference relatively close to the base (at about 50 feet) that did not disappear with repeated tests or with manual channel changes. The battery pack tested favorably against Uniden's rating of seven hours of talk time or seven days of standby.

We think the Uniden EXAI 7980 is a smart choice for anyone who wants a complete cordless call-management system for home or office. However, it may not be suitable for those who frequently use the handset at extended distances from the base.

5 out of 5 stars Love my Uniden exai7980i.......2003-03-17

I absollutely love this phone. Love it so much, that I bought 4 of them just in case one of them dies and tehy have quit making it. Had another similar phone that I liked a little better (AT&T) but it died and it was more than twice as much. The feature it had that Uniden doesn't is that it actually spoke and told you who was calling in your own voice.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to use, nice features.......2003-01-25

I've had this phone/anwering system for quite a while now and it has not disappointed me at all.

In my opinion, the highlights are:
    - Toll saver (the answering machine answers on 3 rings when there are messages, in 4 or more when there are no messages)
    - You can listen to your messages remotely, using a password
    - Pager button to locate a misplaced handset using a loud beep
    - Digital message recording - No tapes or rewinds necessary
    - Enough message storage capacity - I have never ran out of space for messages
    - Caller ID
    - Loudness settings
    - Different ring types available
    - You can connect headphones to the handset
    - Speaker phone capabilities
    - Easy to configure date/time settings
    - Display the minutes used in most recent call
    - Easy to obtain replacement handset batteries in any Radio Shack Store (Cat No. 23-193, Ni-Cd 3.6V 700mAh)

    Quirks:
    - Sometimes the answering system doesn't stop recording after you pick up the handset. It records the whole conversation up to the time limit preset. There is no specific condition that triggers this (total mistery)
    - Sometimes the handset doesn't start recharging after placing it on the base. You need to jiggle the handset a bit to make it recharge

    Notes:
As with any electrical device, the phone stops working when there's a power outage. Always keep a standard phone available in another extension just in case, unless you connect the Uniden phone to a UPS (as I do)

There are currently more "technologically advanced" phones on the market, but this "old" guy compares favorably with many of them and it is more affordable.

    Best phone I ever had.

    100% Recommended.

    3 out of 5 stars Where can I get a battery?.......2002-10-17

Here is a problem. I have this phone. I cannot find a new battery for the darn thing! What am I supposed to do now?

2 out of 5 stars One year and several problems later..........2002-05-01

We purchased this phone last year when our cordless went to telephone heaven. It worked great for about 9 months, then it started acting funny. For one thing, the phone suddenly refused to charge if the keypad was facing in (toward the base). Just last week, the phone began to emit a strange buzzing noise at periodic intervals in the conversation; changing the channel on the phone, recharging it completely and moving to another room did not resolve the problem. Once every three or four months, the answering machine "resets" itself, losing the time and date and our greeting message.

One thing I found uncomfortable about the phone is the proximity of the "Talk" button to my jaw. When I cradle the phone between my shoulder and head while talking, I inevitably hang up on the caller. Sometimes it doesn't hang up - it just puts the person "on hold" and I can click back into them. This, of course, is quite random.

Another feature I don't care for is the fact that you have must delete the message while you're listening to it. If you have any old messages, you must hit PLAY, then delete it. Not a major incovenience, just a minor annoyance.

Occasionally, the answering machine will pick up on the second ring instead of the fourth as it normally does. Again, random.

The phone base fits well on our wall and the phone itself is easy to use. The ring tones and volume is adjustable and the channel features are useful.

    5 out of 5 stars Can't Beat It!.......2002-04-23

Before AT&T phones became shoddy, I would have said they were the best on the market, but now, after trying dozens of different models of cordless phones, I finally found one that is just as good as the old AT&T's. I did go through a battery after about 2 years, but that is the least thing that could happen. Has all the bells and whistles for a great price. Sound is excellent, and the volume of rings, voice, and answering machine can be adjusted. Recommend it highly.
